Chapter 1.1

The door of the barracks was torn open as if the end of the world were standing in front of the captain's door. With a bang, it hit the corrugated iron of the building as the unwanted guest entered. "It’s him! Roy, I need you to come with me to the launch site. It really is him! The others are just recovering the plane.” Wilfred May was absolutely ecstatic. Quite the opposite of his counterpart.

Roy Brown just sat on his cot and stared at the shelves a few feet in front of him. He did not answer, but stood up and walked towards the young man. "Is everything alright? Are you hurt?” What a question. Of course not. He certainly hadn't just saved the young man’s life and his own, no. He had only just survived the toughest dogfight—by far—that an RAF pilot could have. "I'll tell you again, it's him!” May insisted. “I just got the report. I can't believe you shot him down—the plane is all smashed!"

But Brown wasn’t paying attention to May’s words. He seemed a little more composed than he usually was. All he did was pull a white carton out of his coat. Here, in the fresh air, it seemed more than ideal for a light. But as he got the cigarettes out, his tension was fully visible. His hands were still shaking from the last fight as he hurriedly tore open the package and put a cigarette in his mouth.

English cigarettes. Granted, cheap. How often had he heard that he should buy better ones? But still, the best for him. He always carried them with him and they were more than a rescue for him in these kinds of situations. "Roy? Are you even listening to me? Say something!" May grabbed Brown by the shoulder and turned the Canadian to face him. The older man had a bad habit of turning his back to anyone who spoke to him when he was in a mood.

Brown looked into the young man’s angry face. Moments before, he had thought he might never see it again. "I am listening to you, Wilfred. And I know who it is. I have already received the report. I…”

His eyes narrowed reproachfully at May for a moment. If looks could have killed, anyone would have died on the spot. "What was it you were thinking? Everything we learned…"

The first cigarette wasn't even finished before it was thrown on the ground and hastily stubbed out. He couldn't even light a second one. Brown's entire body was tense and shaking so badly that part of the contents of the box fell to the ground. In frustration, he threw the lighter andthe carton to the ground, allowing his anger to run wild.

"You flew like a complete idiot. Of course, the guy moves closer to your plane and almost shoots you down. I thought . . . damn it!” Brown's anger increased almost more when his friend didn't even try to defend himself. In his anger, but also in sheer helplessness and fear, he grabbed May by both arms. Perhaps he could shake an answer from him.

Or just to be sure he was still there. Here. In front of him. Standing on solid ground. Oh, god. He was really going to lose his mind. "I didn't bring you here to be shot down as a torch by those German bastards."
