Rest, Rainclouds, and a Splash of Colour

This morning started just like any other—bowl of cereal, sleepy eyes, and plans to head off to work. But after breakfast, I laid down for a quick rest since I couldn’t shower post-procedure. That "quick rest" turned into a deeper nap than expected… and when I woke 45 minutes later, my body made the decision for me.

I called in sick.

Not because I wanted a day off, but because I needed one. My body was still aching, and my heart needed a little extra cloud-cover to heal. Mum called, and without hesitation, said she thought I’d stay home anyway. It felt good to feel understood.

The rest gave me more than just a break—it gave me time. Time to breathe. Time to heal. Time to finish redesigning my fifth colouring book (yay!). And when I’m ready, I’ll start putting those finishing touches on the website rebrand and relaunch.

It’s been literally years since I’ve been sick - the kinda “knock you down, kick your butt, make you miss a week of work” kinda sick. Years. It caught up to me once again, after all of this time. The dreaded kick-ass cold that turns into bronchitis. You know the one - the one that makes you feel like, well - a Great Dane is sitting on your chest! Two boxes of tissues and counting, hot tea (Yogi brand throat comfort tea works well), cough medicine, and rest. Rest would be nice... But I have a 4 1/2 month old puppy. She doesn’t do rest on my terms, only on her own. Now don’t get me wrong, she is a great sleeper at night. She will sleep from about 8 pm until her internal 0645 alarm clock goes off each morning, if we don’t get her up earlier than that. Nighttime hasn’t been my best time to sleep with all of this funk. Nighttime tends to be the time that the coughing creeps in, accompanied by her best friend, nasal congestion. Yippee! I wake exhausted and Maggie wakes raring to go! I know, this too shall pass. 

So why is it that so many people go in to work when they are sick? Stigma? Lack of sick time off? They would rather use their sick time for things other than being sick? I don’t know... but what I do know is that when you share work spaces with others and you are sick, you inevitably spread your germs, no matter how “careful” you think you’re being. Think of the number of surfaces you touch on any given day - door knobs, computer keyboards, desks, pens, the water cooler spout. All of these things are likely “germy-er” than a toilet seat. So think about your co-workers, and their kids. No one wants to get sick, no one wants to take it home to their children so they’ll get sick, and no one wants to be on a round of antibiotics for a week. Stay home if you are sick, friends!
