Priyanka Gandhi Joins Wrestlers Protest, Asks Cops To Show FIR Copy
The Delhi Police, which functions under Amit Shah's Home Ministry, filed the two first information reports (FIRs) hours after the Supreme Court ordered them to do so.
Tumblr media
New Delhi: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra met protesting wrestlers at Delhi's Jantar Mantar today to express solidarity with their demand for action against the alleged sexual harassment of women athletes by superiors. The wrestlers have been on a sit-in at Jantar Mantar demanding the arrest of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on complaints of sexual harassment.
At the protest venue, the Congress general secretary hit out at the Delhi Police for not providing a copy of the First Information Report, or FIR, filed against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
"I don't have any expectations from the PM (Narendra Modi), because if he is worried about these wrestlers, then why has he not talked to them or met them yet. Why the govt is trying to save him (Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh," she said.
The Delhi Police on Friday filed two cases against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief after the Supreme Court ordered them to do so. One of the FIRs is over a complaint of sexual harassment by a minor, filed under the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, which gives no scope for bail.
The Delhi Police will pursue the case actively, sources said.
But despite the assurance of police action, the wrestlers said they will continue their sit-in protest demanding the "immediate arrest" of the WFI chief.
"We respect Supreme Court's order, but we don't have faith in Delhi Police. This fight is not for an FIR. This fight is to punish people like him. He needs to be in jail and stripped of his portfolios," the wrestlers said.
Earlier this week, Priyanka Gandhi had slammed the government, saying that the pleas of the sportspersons, who enhance the country's honour, were being ignored. She had asserted that "when the arrogance of a party and its leaders" is sky high, then such voices are crushed.
Congress leaders such as Bhupinder Hooda, Deepender Hooda and Udit Raj had also joined the protesting wrestlers at Jantar Mantar earlier this week to express solidarity with them.
Mr Singh, who is also a BJP MP, welcomed the Supreme Court's order to file the police case into allegations of sexual harassment against him.
Mr Singh told reporters the wrestlers should have waited for the report of a committee that was tasked to look into the matter before they decided to sit on a protest in Delhi's Jantar Mantar.
"I am happy with the judiciary's decision. The Delhi Police will investigate the allegations and I am ready to cooperate with them in every possible way. No one is bigger than the judiciary in this country. The order has come to file an FIR (first information report). The government had also said it had no objection to filing an FIR. I am not larger than the Supreme Court. I welcome the order," Mr Singh told reporters.

what do you think of wrestlers protest in delhi?
I am vaguely aware of it but I will be honest, I haven't kept up with any news for a while now and I literally have no idea what the protest is about. So, I can't comment on it, sorry :/

WFI management to see clean up, Singh’s family and close associates are not allowed to be in the leadership
The Sports Minister Anurag Thakur and the protesting wrestlers had a 6-hour long meeting yesterday in which they talked about their issues at length. the major takeaway from the meeting was a complete clean-up and powershift in the Wrestling Federation of India.
The Wrestling Federation of India is been ruled by BJP MP Brij Bhushan Singh who is repeatedly accused of sexual harassment by athletes. his close associates as well as family members are also involved in the management of the federation. It now seems that there will be a complete change of power and the WFI will see a new leadership.
The government also assured that no member of Singh’s family will be allowed to be a part of the WFI or contest in the upcoming elections. It was also made clear that the “opinion” of the three protesting wrestlers – Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, and Vinesh Phogat must also be taken into account while deciding who would be the next leader of the prime federation of India. This includes posts like the president, general secretary, and treasurer.
Sports Minister Anurag Thakur made these changes clear after the meeting, during a press conference, and said, “The WFI elections should be conducted by June 30 and WFI’s Internal Complaints Committee be set up with a woman as head. After the elections, WFI should function as a good federation with good office-bearers. Players’ opinions should be taken in this regard.”
Singh has been leading the WFI for 12 years now and had to change the leadership because of the tenure cap outlined by the National Sports Code. However, as per the latest meeting outcomes, neither Singh’s family nor his close associates can take that seat now.

A reminder that the female Indian wrestlers are protesting not just for themselves - but for every Indian woman.
Very brave women, braver than any of these spineless role models - Sachin, Dhoni and Kholi - all 3 with daughters of their own. I pity their daughters.

Wrestlers protest: Security tightened at Delhi borders ahead of protest called by farmers movement
Samyukt Kisan Morcha called for nationwide demonstrations on Thursday in support of wrestlers protesting against Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
Tumblr media
NEW DELHI: Security was tightened at Delhi's border points on Thursday in view of a call for nationwide demonstrations given by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) in support of wrestlers protesting against Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
Security personnel are maintaining strict vigil at the border points and extra pickets have been put up to prevent any untoward incident, Delhi Police officials said.
"Security has been tightened, extra police personnel have been deployed and we have also set up extra pickets at Delhi's borders. We want to ensure that law and order are maintained and no untoward incident takes place. This has been done as a precautionary measure," a senior police officer said.
Vehicles entering Delhi from neighbouring states are being checked at the borders, he said.
The SKM, an umbrella body of farmers' unions, had on Tuesday called for nationwide protests on June 1 in support of wrestlers who have been demanding the arrest of Singh for allegedly sexually harassing female grapplers, including a minor.
In a statement, the SKM had said its call for demonstrations was aimed at securing the democratic right to protest by the Indian wrestlers and all other sections of society, and to demand the arrest of Singh, who is also a BJP MP.
It said it would coordinate with platforms of trade unions, women, youth, students and all other sections, including intellectuals, to stage demonstrations.
The wrestlers, who had been protesting at Jantar Mantar since April 23 seeking the arrest of Singh, were removed from the site by the Delhi Police on Sunday after they tried to march to the new Parliament building that was inaugurated the same day. They were detained and later let off.

Increased Security at India Gate as Wrestlers Stage Hunger Strike
In an unprecedented turn of events, a group of wrestlers has announced a hunger strike at India Gate, one of the most iconic landmarks in New Delhi. As news of the protest spread, authorities immediately beefed up security measures to ensure the safety and well-being of the wrestlers and the general public. This latest news in India about the wrestlers has made everyone wonder about the country’s situation.
The wrestlers, numbering around 50, belong to various parts of the country and are demanding greater recognition and support for their sport. Their hunger strike aims to draw attention to the lack of infrastructure, training facilities, and financial assistance provided to wrestlers across India.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Harbhajan Singh, a renowned wrestler and an Olympic medalist, expressed their frustration. "Wrestling is one of the oldest sports in India, deeply rooted in our culture. Yet, it receives minimal attention and support from the government and sports authorities. Our wrestlers face numerous challenges in terms of training facilities, coaching, and financial assistance. We are here today to demand change."
News of the hunger strike has sparked widespread interest and concern among wrestling enthusiasts and the general public alike. The wrestlers have gained support from several sports organizations, including wrestling federations, as well as athletes from other disciplines who are rallying behind their cause.
In response to the announcement, authorities have implemented tight security measures around India Gate to ensure the safety of the protestors and the public. Police personnel have been deployed in large numbers, along with barricades and surveillance cameras to monitor the situation closely. The area surrounding India Gate has been cordoned off to allow for the peaceful expression of the wrestlers' demands.
The government, recognizing the significance of the wrestlers' concerns, has taken note of the hunger strike. Officials from the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs have stated that they are willing to engage in dialogue with the wrestlers to address their grievances. They have expressed a commitment to improving the infrastructure and support system for wrestling in the country.
"The government acknowledges the contribution of wrestlers to the sporting fabric of our nation," said Ramesh Sharma, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs. "We understand their concerns and are determined to work towards their resolution. We will be initiating discussions with the wrestlers and relevant stakeholders to find sustainable solutions."
As the hunger strike enters its second day, supporters have been pouring in to show solidarity with the wrestlers. Social media platforms are abuzz with messages of encouragement, urging the authorities to take swift action. Many are hopeful that this protest will bring about positive changes and lead to a better future for wrestling in India.
The wrestlers remain determined, resolute in their cause, as they continue their hunger strike at India Gate. Their struggle shines a spotlight on the challenges faced by wrestlers and athletes in marginalized sports across the nation. It is a reminder to the authorities of the need for greater support and recognition for all sports, fostering a culture of inclusivity and providing equal opportunities for athletes to excel.
