Today In History
Rakim Allah was born on this date January 28, 1968 in Wyandanch, New York to a musically talented family. Under the tutelage of his soft spoken and artistic father William Griffin Sr. and his mother, who sang jazz and opera, Rakim’s innate musical abilities were cultivated at an early age.
He learned how to play the saxophone and drums and developed an appreciation for all genres of music with an emphasis on jazz and soul. He was inspired by greats from Thelonious Monk to John Coltrane and latched onto the syncopation and rhythmic sophistication that jazz derived from. In addition, he was also the nephew of R&B legend and actress Ruth Brown, whose professionalism and artistic genius would have a profound effect on who he would become as an artist.
Rakim has repeatedly been voted the greatest MC of all time in numerous critic and fan polls, the God MC.
In the late 80’s he added a complex flow and fluid delivery to the art of rhyming that was ahead of its time, and was a great source of inspiration.
Rakim Allah has been with Hip Hop since its humble beginnings and is as dedicated to it as his fans are to him. His sheer love and respect for the culture make him a musical legend that turned rhythm and poetry into a culture that transformed America and the world.
“Music orientated so when hip-hop was originated, fitted like pieces of puzzles, complicated.”

RAKIM
William Michael Griffin Jr., better known by his stage name Rakim (born January 28, 1968), is an American rapper. One half of golden age hip hop duo Eric B. & Rakim, he is widely regarded as one of the most influential and most skilled MCs of all time.
Rakim is the nephew of the late American R&B singer and actress Ruth Brown.  He grew up in Wyandanch, New York on Long Island, and became involved in the New York City hip hop scene when he was eighteen years old.
Rakim, then known as Kid Wizard in 1985, made his first recordings live at Wyandanch High School. Rakim was initially introduced to the Nation of Islam in 1986, and later joined The Nation of Gods and Earths (also known as the 5 Percent Nation), and adopted the name Rakim Allah.
ERIC B. & RAKIM
First meeting in 1985 after Rakim responded to Eric B.'s search for "New York's top MC", Eric B's friend and roommate Marley Marl allowed them to use his home studio. In 1986, Eric B. brought him to Marley Marl's house to record "Eric B. Is President".
Eric B. and Rakim went on to release four studio albums before their separation in 1992. The duo were described by journalist Tom Terrell of NPR as "the most influential DJ/MC combo in contemporary pop music period", while the editors of About.com ranked them as No. 4 on their list of the 10 Greatest Hip-Hop Duos of All-Time. They were nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011, although they did not make the final selection.
The first track they recorded—"Eric B. Is President"—was released as a single on the independent Zakia Records in 1986. After Def Jam Recordings founder Russell Simmons heard the single, the duo were signed to Island Records and began recording the album in Manhattan's Power Play Studios in early 1987.
Tumblr media
On July 7, 1987, the duo released their debut album, Paid in Full, on the Island-subsidiary label 4th & B'way Records. The album peaked at #58 on the Billboard 200 chart and produced five singles: "Eric B. Is President", "I Ain't No Joke", "I Know You Got Soul", "Move the Crowd", and "Paid in Full".[16]Eric B. & Rakim's album Paid in Full was named the greatest hip hop album of all time by MTV in 2006, while Rakim himself was ranked #4 on MTV's list of the Greatest MCs of All Time. Steve Huey of AllMusic stated that "Rakim is near-universally acknowledged as one of the greatest MCs – perhaps the greatest – of all time within the hip-hop community."
The editors of About.com ranked him #2 on their list of the 'Top 50 MCs of Our Time (1987–2007)'. Rakim began his career as the emcee of the rap duo Eric B. & Rakim, who in 2011 were nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2012, The Source ranked him #1 on their list of the "Top 50 Lyricists of All Time.
SOLO CAREER
After his breakup with Eric B. in early 1993, Rakim kept a low profile, only making one notable appearance on the soundtrack to the 1993 film Gunmen. A reshuffling in MCA caused Rakim to be dropped from the label in 1994. As Rakim continued to struggle with legal problems, he secured a deal with Universal Records and began recording his solo debut album The 18th Letter in 1996. In November 1997, the album The 18th Letter was released. Expectations were high for Rakim, as the album debuted at #4 on the Billboard 200 and went certified Gold by the RIAA.
In June 1999, Rakim appeared on three tracks of "The Seduction of Claude Debussy" by Art of Noise. AllMusic's Keith Farley notes that "the album charts the artistic use of sampled breakbeats -- pioneered by the Art of Noise themselves -- with nods to '80s hip-hop plus their '90s equivalent, drum'n'bass."
Tumblr media
Rakim performing in Hamburg, Germany, June 3, 1998
In November 1999, Rakim released The Master, which received good reviews but sold poorly.
Rakim was signed to Dr. Dre's Aftermath Entertainment record label in 2000, for work on an album tentatively titled Oh, My God. The album underwent numerous changes in artistic direction and personnel and was delayed several times. While working on the album, Rakim made guest appearances on numerous Aftermath projects, including the hit single "Addictive" by Truth Hurts, the Dr. Dre-produced "The Watcher Part 2" by Jay-Z, and Eminem's 8 Mile soundtrack.
However, Rakim left the label in 2003 and Oh, My God was indefinitely shelved. After Rakim eventually left Aftermath Entertainment, he stated that the reason he departed the label was because of creative differences with Dr. Dre. Rakim used a metaphorical example that Dr. Dre wanted Rakim to write about killing someone, while Rakim wanted to write about the resurrection of someone.

With spring approaching, Mary Judge’s "American Season" (2018) at LIRR Wyandanch and Pinelawnstations offers a meditation on seasonal changes, living in harmony with nature and each other, and societal changes that come with the passing of time.
The rich colors of hand-painted and printed glass radiate and envelop viewers passing through the Wyandanch station overpass bridge and the Pinelawn station platform shelters. Bold lines recall the flare of approaching train headlights or the speeding up and slowing down of a train. The symbolic expansion and contraction is punctuated with stylized flower beacons that are rendered in the style of a homemade sewing sampler. The recurring motif expresses the marriage of place, nature, and the technology of train travel. Judge’s patterns and palette draw influence from various cultures and sources, including Long Island’s Native American communities, textiles from around the world, and the American Craftsman design style of the station house. The latter is especially apparent in the terrazzo floor Judge designed for the Wyandanch station house.

The Mystery, Myth and Reality of Plum Island
Plum Island, an 840-acre speck of land off New York's Long Island, has a rich and intriguing history¹.
The island was first purchased by Samuel Willis III from Wyandanch, the ruling local Indian Chieftain of Long Island, in 1659 for a coat, a barrel of biscuits, and one hundred fishhooks. It was named by the Dutch after the bounty of beach plums that grow along its shores.
In the late 1800s, its remoteness and isolation made Plum Island popular among the wealthy, who sought relaxation and escape from hectic city life at rustic fish camps there. However, the Spanish-American War sparked concern about U.S. coastal defenses, and as the century turned, Plum Island was transformed into Fort Terry, a heavily armed military installation.
In the 1950s, the U.S. Department of Agriculture established the Plum Island Animal Disease Center (PIADC) for research into animal pathogens¹. The facility was located on an island to reduce the danger of pathogens or infected animals escaping and spreading to farms¹. The center has been under the control of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security since 2003.
Despite the rumors and conspiracy theories about the development of biological warfare weapons and animal-human hybrids¹, the center's main focus is to stave off foreign animal diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease and African swine fever. These diseases have the potential to wreak havoc with the U.S. food supply if they ever spread across the nation's farms.
Today, Plum Island provides a rare glimpse of what Long Island and much of the Northeast was like centuries before. It bears the marks of the human history that has unfolded there: the lighthouse, the narrow roads, rusted railroad tracks, and overgrown artillery batteries once filled with soldiers who never saw combat, and the modern-day scientific facility.

New York Knicks Sign Donte DiVincenzo
Tumblr media
Based in Holbrook, New York, Greg Gerkens has several years of experience in education. He has worked as a special education teacher with Wyandanch UFSD and, most recently, as an assistant principal at Eastern Suffolk BOCES. Outside of his professional endeavors, Greg Gerkens enjoys following New York sports teams, including the Knicks of the National Basketball Association (NBA).
The Knicks made a few moves in the 2023 off-season, most notably declining Derrick Rose's $15.6 million team option and signing 6-foot-4 shooting guard Donte DiVincenzo to a four-year, $47 million contract. The Knicks used its mid-level exception to sign DiVincenzo, a former teammate of Josh Hart and Jalen Brunson at the University of Villanova.
Selected 17th overall by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2018 NBA Draft, DiVincenzo has averaged 9.1 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.8 assists through 273 career games with the Bucks, Sacramento Kings, and Golden State Warriors. He won the NBA Championship with Milwaukee in 2021.
DiVincenzo is a skilled three-point shooter with a career success rate of 36.2, including a career-best 39.7 percent last season with the Warriors. He's also an adept defender.
