The calm before the storm.

You get the call at the beginning of the next semester. The student center wants an interview with you! They want you in as soon as possible. They offer you an interview two days from now, and you say well, you can be there tomorrow if they need you to. The recruiter, Elizabeth, seems impressed. Good. Maybe if you’re lucky you won’t need to do a million interviews. You don’t have much that’s nice to wear. You’ve been to the student center, and everyone wears polos and button ups and stuff. You have a few, enough for an interview, and one pair of slacks. And if you get the job, it’s not like you’ll be working up a sweat, so you can febreeze them until your first paycheck when you can get a week’s worth. At least it doesn’t cost extra for the laundry machines, just soap and things. But you’re getting ahead of yourself. You don’t even know if they’re going to hire you. It’s just an interview. The next day you have to go straight there after your last class. People look at you like you’re a completely different person, even though they’ve only seen you once, yesterday. Clothes really do make a difference, don’t they? That’s fine. You like your patched up band shirts and safety pinned jeans. They’re comfortable. They come with good memories. They’re yours. Class gets let out a couple minutes late, so you have to run to the other side of the campus to make it in time. You pause outside the door to the student center to catch your breath so you can at least pretend to look professional, then you take off your jacket and stuff it into your bookbag so their first impression is ‘professional young man in a polo’ and not ‘scruffy punk kid in a worn out jacket.’
