[ID: A black and white cartoony version of John Everett Millais' painting of Ophelia, but it's Garfield who is floating in the river. The majority of the image is rendered in thick black line with screentones that are quatrefoil patterns. Garfield is the only pop of colour, in his orange. Across part of the landscape above his floating body are the words "May 2024." End ID.]
Somehow I've gone through five months of playlists and not repeated any songs yet??? Spring has been weird and grey here, many days I can't see the mountains for the cloud. I love when I find a new band then whoops they've got several songs on one playlist - SPELLING names Minnie Riperton's Come to My Garden as an influence and last year's May playlist was crafted around a song of hers so it feels like a nice little circle there.
Related media to some of the songs:
'I Hope You Feel Terrible' is a single from Boy Jr.'s upcoming album and I'm sure it is going to influence the hell out of all following playlists.
Ween's 'Your Party' just absolutely (yacht)rocks, and in no small part to them bringing David Sanbourn in on it - from a statement from Dean Ween in 2007: "... here has always been one provision to this rule, and that was we would only use horns if we could get David Sanborn to play some sexy saxophone on a Ween tune."
I write these posts over drafts of the previous month and I am looking at the bullet point that says "The way things go I think songs from a playlist I picked up from a Fallout: New Vegas fan artist are in May" and I was right but also me listening to that playlist a bunch made the Spotify Daylist give me a playlist called "harmony 1930s friday late night" and I don't know why they're aying 1930s, that's--that's not correct. But it is a good chill vibes playlist so I saved it to listen to a bunch
Anyway here's a link to May's playlist on Spotify, with the track list below the cut.
And embedded, if you like that.

OASys Concept at Kona Kai Resort and Spa
Stephens Waring Design announces a new design concept called OASys (Ocean Architectural System) created specifically to reimagine shoreline hotels, resorts, and housing. The model falls under the brand of the award-winning boat designer called IMMERST, which will address some of the most pressing coastline development challenges including limited land, habitat preservation, and climate change.
“We’ve applied our 40 years of custom yacht design and engineering experience to create a design-planning model built around the cutting edge of sustainability, renewable materials, and advanced manufacturing. While our designs are built for long-term operational success in some of the most challenging environments including oceans, lakes, rivers, and beaches, we’ve also created something that’s exciting, fun, and luxurious,” said lead designer Paul Waring.
Up and down coastlines, there are many places that are perfect for floating infrastructure and marine development. These include locations with insufficient planning permissions or developable land. They also include areas where there are ecological sensitivities and delicate habitat.
Because OASys can be built into a variety of arrangements – dock and marina infrastructures – or be built as “free standing” units moored to the ocean floor, the design allows for development and expansion with a minimized shoreline footprint. Furthermore, because the designs can be affixed to permanent or nonpermanent marina infrastructure, OASys mitigates any potential impact on the marine environment.
For marina operators, IMMERST philosophy aims to re-imagine underutilized shoreline and general marina space, converting a site into highly desirable, revenue producing accommodations, attractions or water-based residences. The unique nature of IMMERST’s flexible design solutions allows developers and operators to integrate their installations with standard civic utilities–water, electrical, and sewer.
“When you walk onto an OASys floating community, life is less complicated. You immediately forget about the presuress and the distractions that we all face because you’re surrounded by the environment and connected to the water’s edge,” said Waring.
Unlike traditional hotel resort development, IMMERST works closely with developers and operators to create a specific range of flexible, customizable, and scalable solutions that fit each unique site. Floating modules are designed to be easily installed and operated. In the event that there is a need for removal, modules can be made transportable and can be relocated to meet the real-time economic needs of the operator.
All OASys designs are integrated into modular foundations, pre-fabricated through the firm’s network of builders/contractors or constructed onsite making fabrication and delivery viable for locations around the globe.

[OT, RF] Just some thoughts about life. Totally fictional
This past year I’ve seen more and done more than I could have ever imagined. I saw Barcelona. I saw Cypress. I explored a modern day occupied city. I sat and prayed in a Turkish mosque. I visited ten thousand year-old ruins, and read about biblical-age history on the very stones that those men and women walked. I smoked weed and skateboarded at the museum of modern art. I juggled in front of thousand year-old cathedrals. I witnessed the in-progress works of a wonder of the modern world: The Basilica de la Sagrada Familia. It’s not exactly like the pyramids, but it is like the pyramids, and I was enchanted by its beauty; I bathed in its light. Some people will go their entire lives without leaving the perimeter of Atlanta. A circular highway, a few miles outside city limits, encompasses all they might ever know. To be so simple. To be so ill-informed and content. To be so untraveled and well-grounded.
Ignorance is bliss?
I’ve traveled all across North America. I’ve watched the fire dancers at the base of the mountain on a Sunday evening in Montreal. I’ve watched Canada Day fireworks far below from the CN Tower in Toronto. I’ve seen the Manhattan skyline, braved its public transport, and tasted its delicious cuisine. I’ve drunkenly stumbled through New Orleans; I saw breasts, and vomit, and many a bride-to-be. I stayed out too late and met with the buskers; we had a wonderful time by the river. I heard stories of horror and love. We sang songs, and the brave of us swam, but all the while, the heavy history hung in the air. I’ve been to the temple in Salt Lake City, high as a kite. I’ve seen Mt Baker from the Space Needle on a rare clear day. I’ve caught and cooked trout from a lake west of Denver, and watched the sun dip past the continental divide. I’ve watched it come up again across Lake Michigan from the Chicago shoreline. I watched the Cubs win a game at Wrigley, the season they broke the curse and won the World Series. I shot Malort, but also Chartreuse, on the house of course. I saw nothing in Phoenix and so much in Austin, when electric scooters were still in their prime. I worked too hard in Columbus to hang with the college locals; my coworker got held up in Dallas and was not on time the next day. Speaking of Dallas, last time I was there, I caught an Uber to the wrong hotel - in Fort Worth - at 2 in the morning. It’d be another hour until bed. I wound up at gay bars in Philly and Sacramento. I was hit on by sluts, but also some classy gentlemen. I sincerely appreciated the flattery. I had the best lamb of my life at a hotel in Raleigh, which is crazy, because the food in that town sucks. I heard the rapper Common soundcheck with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra next to billionaire yachts. You’ll find the best sausage roll ever at that marina. I swam with a shark in Fort Lauderdale; I did not swim again that day. I’ve rung in the New Year in downtown Nashville. I’ve jet skied on one of 10,000 lakes in Minnesota. I’ve wandered through Charleston. I lost my passport in Tepic, and saw the shot clock in Guadalajara the next day on the way to the embassy. I played golf in Cancun.
To know much is to live fully.
I’ve seen how depressing Atlantic City is in December. I got into an argument with a homeless man in Louisville. I was on a flight that caught fire one time, and we had to land halfway to switch planes. That is the most I’ve seen of Cincinnati: just the sky from the airport with a free chicken sandwich, and one of the last remaining in-terminal smoking lounges in the country. I’ve walked across the finish line of the Boston marathon. I’ve lost women to Nashville, and New York, and Charlotte, and Mantua, and a few more to friends. The morning after I drank with a couple 80’s-era Blackhawk players at the Fairmont in Chicago, I watched coverage of a massacre in Vegas. I knew of the Mandalay Bay; I’d been there only months before. I was at Tom’s Urban - well, it used to be; now it’s Tom’s Watch Bar, and the food is shitty - the night of Kobe’s service across the street in Downtown LA. I flew on a plane back home that almost certainly contributed to the initial Covid-19 spread in the US. I was sick as a dog when I got home, and I thought nothing of it. I was in Tampa at a conference of actuaries who were perhaps the most prepared and informed for the upcoming pandemic. They were gravely concerned; I wasn’t.
To live fully is to feel much pain.

FOTOCRIME PREMIERES SULTRY, SMOLDERING NEW SINGLE, “BLUE SMOKE”
Watch the curious music video, directed by Katie Lovecraft, now.
Tumblr media
South of Heaven is out March 13 on Profound Lore.
Buoyed by the crystalline backing vocals of Janet Morgan (Channels), Fotocrime’s latest single "Blue Smoke" is an instant dance-punk classic.  A taut and driving bassline permeates the track while frontman R.’s syncopated earworm guitar line pushes it over the edge; this new song offers a snapshot of what’s offered on South Of Heaven, the second full-length chapter in the narrative that is Fotocrime.
Watch (+ share) the music video for “Blue Smoke” here.
On South of Heaven, Fotocrime not only survives, but thrives in the shadows—beneath a heaviness that cannot be escaped, within melodies that defy light and dark. Produced and engineered by J. Robbins (Jawbox) and recorded by Steve Albini (Shellac) at Electrical Audio in Chicago, Simon Small in London, and Robbins in Baltimore, the stories comprising South of Heaven are winding and boundless, unfolding with unexpected paths and hairpin turns. South of Heaven carves a landscape that spans both earthly and astral planes.
“This is a record for late night drives, a soundtrack for headlights illuminating the horizon,” R. says of South of Heaven. “I’ll make music until the end of my days, with or without a listener, but I’m happy to have a passenger for the ride into the dark.”

Yacht Charter - Intro To Basics
Tumblr media
Yacht charter is a common way of spending quality vacations and is now increasingly more popular. This is a short intro to yacht charter fundamentals, detailing differences among types of vessels, their advantages and prices. you may also like San Diego yacht rental
There are several phrases applied in yacht charter terminology: vessels and yachts. The term vessel shows a more compact vessel, less lavish, cheaper consequently. These are typically for bareboat local rental, for they are quick and simple to navigate with. Nevertheless, it is possible to still choose the skippered local rental, despite the size of the motorboat.
All of the comfortable ones are the yachts. Their mighty name means the exclusive and elegant navigation, generally including skipper or higher personnel up to speed such as prepare, hostess, safeguard, etc.. Nevertheless, there are a few vessels designed for bareboat charter besides, only those are usually from the smaller - size ones of the type.
Moreover, the majority of the motorboats/yachts could be split into, luxurious yachts, sailing motorboats - monohull, catamarans sometimes known as multihull ( 2 or even more), gulets and, engine ships. Each one of the course includes a subgroup of their own. Therefore, the electric motor motorboats are usually split into those having an individual engine, with 2 or even more engines, travel bridge or open up. Sailing watercraft similarly have a lot of variants, cruising vessels, racers. Not forgetting high-class vessels and massive wooden gulets flawlessly ideal for larger groups.
The boat option varies according to several things. The quantity of travelers has become the significant ones, for this will surely impact further process. Take into account that the majority of the actual cabins will have a capacity for two different people. It's your decision either to choose matrimonial one, twin-bedded cabin or simply bunk mattresses. Certain cabins, twin-bedded often, supply another extra cabin too, when others could be convertible into matrimonial variations.
Among the key components in yacht charter is usually the cost range that one gets rid of. Sailing vessel costs are frequently much more affordable, whereas electric motor luxury yachts will demand more costs. Again then, these are very different charter styles definitely, the difference in rates hence.
The data, as well as the proficiency around navigation, could also determine your choice for yacht charter type. The more certified you will be, the simpler your choice is going to be. The yacht charter yacht equipment is extremely important, for this affects the price as well as the superiority of the assistance. Some things may be provided on demand

A Conversation on Conservation in 2018
A Conversation on Conservation in 2018
This year we have seen an incredible leap forward in the awareness of ocean conservation from the superyacht industry. We have seen inspiration from the alternative fuel research sector, innovative hybrid yacht designs and the impact of solar energy across the sector. Today, we take a look in retrospect at ocean conservation in 2018 and anticipate the future of conservation in the superyacht industry.
Marine Group Boat Works,(“MGBW”) a family-owned boatbuilding and repair company, is leading the charge for sustainable construction, off the water. After recently completing a 500-kW rooftop solar panel system for its shipyard in National City, CA, MGBW can safely be said to be one of the first boatbuilders to use solar energy to construct boats. The new solar panel system will greatly decrease MGBW’s footprint and is expected to reduce annual energy consumption by 81% based on past and projected consumption.
“Our initial decision to go solar was driven primarily by our desire to be a zero-emission, low impact boatbuilder,” said Todd Roberts, president of MGBW. “There’s no question that solar is an economic benefit, but there are many other advantages – everything from self-reliance and sustainability to doing the right thing. We chose to do the right thing.”
MGBW’s commitment to sustainability and low impact construction makes one of the evolving many pioneers in the industry, as recognized by the Port of San Diego who awarded MGBW with the 2016 Renewable Energy Sustainability Achievement Award. Another solar-powered project which has been inspired by the changing tide towards increased awareness of carbon footprints is the SolarImpact yacht.
Excitingly, this year at the Cannes Yachting Festival, the world’s first ocean-going solar-powered yacht was unveiled. After five years of research, Swiss company SolarImpact AG addressed the problems of rough seas and high noise levels with a new and ingenious 24-metre solar yacht which is almost silent without any swaying motion, even in strong swells.
SolarImpact’s drive technology and energy supply were developed in collaboration with Austria‘s Kreisel Electric GmbH & Co.KG, a company known for developing highly efficient, ultra-light, rechargeable battery packs. SolarImpact also works closely with the American supplier SunPower, whose solar cells currently have the highest possible efficiency. Solbian, a specialist supplier of flexible solar modules, uses these cells to produce the flexible panels that are installed on the yacht.
Along with the rise of the eco-conscious owner, a yacht’s green credentials and fuel economy have become a big factor in securing a sale. A project to entice such an owner is the Hot Lab 67M explorer by Italian shipyard VSY. A company at the forefront of ecologically responsible construction, VSY’s creation has a staggering 5,000 nautical mile range, making it extremely fuel efficient.
The sustainable explorer is a growing class of yacht more tuned in with environmental efficiency, engineered with lowered pollution and emission techniques to provide a guilt-free cruising. Ingrained in the construction ethos is a respect for the far-flung habitats these yachts will visit.
Of course, no-one can argue that the most fuel-efficient yachts are those that exploit the power of the wind and, as Oceanco’s 106.7 metre Black Pearl proves, with the right sail plan - three 70-metre Dynarig carbon masts and 2,900 square metres of sails – fuel can be virtually left out of the equation entirely. When fuel is concerned though, VSY has this year taken further action to ensure that research has been conducted into alternative fuels.
Italian superyacht shipyard VSY has this year agreed to a partnership with Siemens and Lloyd’s Register to develop a project which will see the application of hydrogen fuel cells technology on one of their new yachts. The shipyard is not only encouraging the evolution of ecologically sound construction of larger yachts but also promoting relationships with international committees and companies to stimulate the increase of environmental stability and clean technologies.
One such international committee which was established this year and is looking to make a big impact on the sailing community is The World Sailing Trust, a unique governing body that has been described by World Sailing as a ‘catalyst for change’ in marine conservation.
Dee Caffari, Chair of the World Sailing Trust declared of the Trust's impact on the superyacht community: "Ultimately everyone will benefit from the work the trust will undertake and the efforts we put in now will have an impact on future generations. For those of us that spend a great deal of time at sea, the benefits are obvious. Superyacht owners will be well aware of the plastic pollution issue and no doubt want to join the growing movement to tackle this. The planet can do with all the help it can get so the more people we can encourage to take action, the better."
As Caffari so expertly phrased it, the changes that the industry is making towards yacht building, production, running and our attitudes towards sustainable sailing are changing as we become more aware of our environmental impact. These changes are incredibly positive as we look towards a hopefully greener and brighter future, one in which the superyacht industry can come together to make a truly tremendous and positive impact on ocean conservation.

The Restoration of the Wooden Minesweeper Liseron
The motor vessel (MV) LISERON was laid down at Tacoma Boatbuilding in Tacoma, Washington, in 1953 as part of a group of seven Adjutant-class motor minesweepers (MSC-type) built for the French Navy, under the auspices of the U.S. Navy's Military Defense Assistance Pact. She was completed June 23, 1954 as the U.S. AMS-98, which is an enlarged and modernized version of the YMS-type minesweeper made for the US Navy during World War II.
These minesweepers were constructed to withstand the hardships of tropical climates and navigate shallow waters of bays, coastlines and inlets with a total draft of just nine feet. They could reach up to 14 knots top speed, and boosted two 20mm mounted on the fore deck: versatile for both anti-aircraft defense and anti-ship offensive operations. Up to 40 personnel could be carried. Despite having brass and stainless-steel fittings and wooden hulls, the ship’s design fell short of its purpose as a minesweeper, as the hulls were later deemed too magnetic and thus susceptible to magnetic mines.
The minesweeper was transferred to the French Navy on November 1, 1955 and was given her official name, LISERON, and pendant number, M-683. Likely while still under French control however, in 1974 LISERON was converted to a diving tender and assigned the pendant number A-723.
Sometime after 1974, LISERON was returned to the US Navy and was struck from the Navy List on September 14, 1987. Information available from Puget Sound Maritime seems to indicate LISERON was not purchased directly from any French agency or company but rather from an intermediary in this country (acting on behalf of the Department of Defense or the Maritime Administration) between 1987 and 1988.
Captain Doug Cope recalled how he initially tracked the LISERON through US Government archives to its location overseas, but credits Mike McIntosh with re-envisioning the old minesweeper as an Eco-Cruiser. It was the second vessel the two men had collaborated on, with the first one being another refurbished boat: the conversion of the SEA WOLF in San Diego into the yacht OBSERVER. The refit design plans for the new LISERON were drawn on cocktail napkins, with refinements later made by naval designer Ben Auslund in Florida.
The Boat Company of Port Orchard, Washington, acquired LISERON in 1988 and began restoration with a view toward using her as a small cruising vessel in the Alaska trade. At his point LISERON was assigned her official number (ON) 971339. Doug spent the summer of 1988 getting the boat seaworthy for its crossing of the Atlantic. A SMIT tug out of Rotterdam provided the tow needed.
Unfortunately, during a layover in the English Channel, the towing completely wrenched out the bronze anchor windlass, sending it straight to the bottom. A new attachment on the foredeck was rigged in Vigo, Spain. The crossing took a month, not counting the delays.
Doug piloted the LISERON over from Brest, France, to Tarpon Springs, FL, where the refit was begun starting in fall, 1988. The vessel was gutted, down to the hull and deck beams made of oak and Purpleheart. Once in Florida, the work crew from The Boat Company (numbering 50 at one point) spent the next sixteen months refurbishing the vessel. The project also involved welders hired from the local Duckworth Boats to undertake the “hot work.”
During the refit, all of the ship’s brass fixtures and the two original (440 hp each) General Motors 8-268A diesel engines were retained. As the project manager, Doug also made trips back and forth to France to scour shipyards where other minesweeper parts could be salvaged. A standard for all authentic parts had been established, making the sourcing of these components – from electronics and deck fittings to a replacement windlass – all the more vital.
The refurbished vessel was finally completed in the spring of 1993.
As a remodeled passenger vessel, its compliment was effectively reduced by half its original number: now limited to just twenty passengers. Ten staterooms – six on the main deck and four on the upper skiff deck - offer plenty of comfort for those making the trip north today on the LISERON to Alaska waters.
In 2011, PacFish made some repairs to the stem, undertook routine caulking of the hull and added new bronze stem iron to the planking line, to protect against possible future collisions. More recent work completed in the winter of 2016 focused on the starboard side to repair a leaking seachest and removal of the ice sheeting four feet below the waterline. A total of twenty-four Fir planks were replaced, and portions of the nine frames repaired with Purpleheart, using original fasteners when possible and replacing many that were deteriorated brass. The fall of 2017 promises the same work being done on the starboard side of the vessel to finish the job.
Today, PacFish continues to service both the LISERON and its sister ship, MIST COVE, for the family of the original owners of The Boat Company, including assistance with annual inspections by the US Coast Guard. The LISERON has Juneau, Alaska, as its hailing port, but regularly returns here to the waters of the Pacific Northwest.
youtube
A Brief History of PacFish
Pacific Fishermen, Inc. can trace its 145-year history as a shipyard of Seattle to the original site of the T.W. Lake Shipyard, founded in 1871 by Norwegian immigrant T.W. Lake. The shipyard employed famous shipbuilders such as Thomas J. King, who later founded the King and Winge Shipbuilding Company in West Seattle. By 1900, there were 20 boat yards in operation from Shilshole Bay to the Freemont Bridge, with the PacFish yard counted among these.
The T.W. Lake Shipyard was later renamed Seattle Ship Yards and purchased in 1917 by the Ballard Marine Railway, Co. Inc. Business for the yard remained steady following the end of World War I. Seattle founding father Joshua Green, the “King of Steamboats,” had his sternwheelers built here for the Puget Sound Mosquito Fleet to the early 1920s.  In 1925 the world’s largest diesel tug MAHOE (120’) and in 1928, the first-in-class US Army tug MIKIMIKI (127’) were built here for Young Brothers’ Hawaiian Tug & Barge Company.
During World War II, a total of sixteen minesweepers, subchasers and patrol boats for the US Navy were built here between 1942 and 1945. Two of these vessels later became Jacques Cousteau’s research vessel CALYPSO and John Wayne’s yacht WILD GOOSE.  The latter vessel was purchased by Wayne in 1962, and appeared in the 1968 film Skidoo starring Groucho Marx.
The end of the war heralded a new chapter in the history of the shipyard. In 1946, Ballard Marine Railway sold the yard to a group of 400 Norwegian heritage fishermen and their wives as a co-op style shipyard, which officially incorporated in that same year as Pacific Fishermen, Inc.
Pacific Fishermen continued building Ed Monk salmon seiners in wood (first designed in 1941) then a series of sixteen Ben Jensen designed steel king crabbers for the North Pacific and Bering Sea beginning in 1966.
Another notable vessel – KEEP CLAM – was the one and only clam dredge built at the shipyard for local chowder king Ivar Haglund. The name for the dredge also happened to be the longtime motto of the seafood company dynasty started by Haglund on the Seattle waterfront in 1938.
In 1986 PacFish purchased Rowe Machine Works with their 600-ton screw-lift drydock to complement the two marine railways. The company has concentrated on repairs of all types of fishing vessels, tugs, passenger vessels and yachts in wood, steel and fiberglass. Specialties range from maintaining old school shipwrights for caulking the wood planking with pine tar oakum on the historic steamer VIRGINIA V to the drydocking and repair of high speed aluminum waterjet passenger catamarans. Complementing this is an Underwriter’s Laboratory electrical panel shop that produces computerized industrial process controls for fish processing and industrial customers such as Theo’s Chocolates and Starbucks.
In the wake of the Great Recession of 2008, PacFish received a US Maritime Administration (MARAD) Small Shipyard grant in 2010, which enabled new growth for the yard with worker training, equipment and other assets. A key focus of these improvements was on the installation of environmentally-friendly and EPA-compliant equipment utilized for both sandblasting and painting operations.

The 2019 Chevrolet Blazer Is the Optimist’s Camaro
SAN DIEGO, California—Who needs a two-row midsize SUV? No one, really, because a one-segment-down, compact two-row like the Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape, or Chevrolet Equinox will carry nearly as much, very likely be priced lower, and probably get better fuel mileage. It’s that category that is rapidly replacing midsize sedans as the vehicular appliance of choice. If you something larger, it’s likely because you need that third row for kids and their friends, or even the extra cargo space with some or all of the seats dropped flat—things that two-row midsizers don’t offer.
But the people that buy such SUVs definitely want them; they’re a lifestyle choice. They’re generally sold in higher trim levels, with more optional equipment, compared with three-row family SUVs. They mostly offer V-6s or at least powerful turbocharged four-cylinders, and sometimes even V-8s. And they tend to be more expressive and more stylish than other SUVs, although that often isn’t saying much given the struggle companies face in distinguishing their tall, slab-sided, two-box models from everyone else’s.
In short, even if they have four doors, those without cynicism could call them the SUV age’s answer to the Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger. Indeed, GM wants you to see the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer, a late-ish entry into this hot segment, as a Camaro analog. Aesthetically, it has enough style to make Bill Mitchell proud, with a bit of Coke bottle to its shape and a pointy grille, and it is possessed of the same general look that made the reborn Camaro the bestseller in its segment for a while a few years ago. The parallel continues inside, with Camaro-style round HVAC vents punctuating the Blazer’s dashboard.
Lest I take this Camaro story too far, note that there is no hotted-up SS version, as Chevy’s latest crossover is available in L, Blazer, RS, and Premier spec. Both of the latter versions’ interiors are nicely finished with quality materials, punching above the Blazer’s price class inversely to the impression one gets from Cadillac’s SUVs. Outside, the RS has black trim instead of chrome, with a black grille and bowtie.
Both the RS and Premier come standard with a naturally aspirated 3.6-liter V-6 making 308 horsepower, just 27 shy of the Ford Edge ST’s 2.7-liter EcoBoost turbo V-6, though the Blazer’s 270 lb-ft can’t compete with the Edge’s EcoBoosted 380.
Even with this deficit, though, the new Blazer feels plenty powerful and offers a smooth, steady launch from a stop—though without the Edge ST’s kick in the backside. Our friends at Motor Trend recorded a zero-to-60-mph time of 6.1 seconds in the all-wheel-drive Ford, and Chevy estimates the Blazer V-6 can hit the same speed in about 6.5 seconds with front-wheel drive. Paradoxically, the all-wheel-drive version is estimated to be a couple of tenths slower; this won’t matter much to its consumers, but most vehicles are quicker with four driven wheels owing to more off-the-line grip.
The standard Blazer engine is a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder, which I did not get to sample. With this four available only on the lowest L trim level, the basic L ($31,190) and 2.5L ($34,690) seem likely to be relegated to rental lots. The four is rated for 193 horsepower and 188 lb-ft of torque and is available with front- or all-wheel drive. Since our spec chart refers only to the two versions I drove, the RS and the Premier, I’ll add that the mid-level Blazer V-6 with cloth seats starts at $35,690 and the Blazer V-6 Leather at $39,890.
That leaves the Premier and RS to start in the $40Ks and compete, both in price and in content, with the Cadillac XT5. This competition according to Chevy includes the Nissan Murano, the new Honda Passport, the aforementioned Edge, and—although it’s a bit of an outlier—the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
The Chevy Blazer’s 3.6-liter V-6 is more spirited than, say, the version of the engine found in the Traverse partly because of its elevated 11.5:1 compression ratio, says Larry Mihalko, the vehicle’s performance manager. Despite the higher ratio, which it shares with the GMC Acadia, it runs on regular unleaded gasoline. A non-defeatable stop-start system adds about 1 mpg in city driving, Chevrolet estimates.
Mihalko attributes the Blazer’s ride-handling acumen to its wide front and rear tracks, high-rate springs, and large-diameter anti-roll bars. The Blazer RS has its own damper tuning that is 40 percent stiffer up front and 15 percent beefier at the rear, and it can be fitted with optional 21-inch wheels. The RS also has direct-acting anti-roll bars that are said to increase roll stiffness in order to deliver a sportier, flatter cornering attitude. The multilink rear suspension is fully isolated from the body, and the rear dampers “are larger than necessary,” for whatever that’s worth. The cross-axis ball joints used here are four times stiffer than rubber bushings, Mihalko says, and “turn easily, but are stiff laterally.”
Mihalko is a gregarious, enthusiastic boffin who tends to geek out about engineering solutions he helps discover. It occurs to me during his outline of the Blazer’s chassis and drivetrain particulars that we have come full-circle since the 1980s, when interlopers like Honda and Toyota proved to GM and its domestic rivals that family sedans don’t have to handle like land yachts. Now automakers both foreign and domestic are trying to figure out how to overcome the laws of physics by making heavy, tall vehicles with 20- or 21-inch wheels handle and ride like cars.
I started in a loaded 2019 Chevrolet Blazer Premier AWD, and while San Diego traffic prevented me from pushing too hard, the suspension is tuned to allow for some body roll and a compliant ride without any wallowing. With 270 lb-ft of torque, the front wheels want to steer themselves a bit under throttle at mid-range rpm, though most aren’t likely to induce the behavior very often. If you’re wondering about torque steer in an all-wheel-drive vehicle, it happened while we were in FWD-only “Normal” mode—the AWD system never engages automatically. Instead, there’s a center-console dial in all-wheel-drive Blazers that is used to call up 4×4 or Sport modes and their attendant full-time AWD. The latter delivers less yaw control via the dual-clutch torque-vectoring rear-differential fitted to RS models (non-RS AWD Blazers have a single-clutch rear differential). There’s also an optional tow/haul feature that engages AWD.
I stuck with the Normal mode, thinking I’d wait to try the AWD system on the RS during the second day of the drive program. Darn the luck, I ended up with a FWD RS instead.
The RS comes with a quicker, 15.1:1 steering ratio versus other Blazers’ 16.1:1 setup. The electrically assisted power steering is a belt-driven rack-mounted system, and while it’s precise with surprisingly good feedback, it never felt particularly quick even in RS-spec. The RS feels more neutral and slightly stiffer while cornering, although its dynamic improvements are incremental and not monumental, mostly because the base suspension is very good. Neither suspension is the least bit harsh—with the caveat that we were on tabletop-smooth roads—and no Blazer is reluctant to turn-in. I did particularly like how the RS fervently holds a lower gear all the way through a corner when in Sport mode.
Is Blazer the new Camaro? Not for enthusiasts who drive cars like the Camaro the way they’re meant to be driven. But mainstream consumers who purchase such crossovers to break out of midsize-sedan or compact-SUV monotony will discover enough Camaro in the Blazer’s design—if not its handling—to find some equivalency. And I’ll admit it is more fun to drive than most utilities. There are a couple of issues surrounding Chevy’s new baby that can’t go unmentioned: Its name first and foremost, because it once belonged to a truck-based Bronco competitor, and that it is being assembled in Mexico, as GM plans to close up to five U.S. factories. These concerns aren’t likely to affect the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer’s success on the sales charts.
