romanticism asks - 18 for Yara 🥞☕
Hi!! Thank u so much for the ask!!
18) What is one thing that they only let those closest to them see?
I think for Yara, the main thing that isn’t seen by most people is how caring/sweet she is, and just how much she actually struggles with that. She tends to be a bit clumsy with her words, especially towards people she doesn’t know well, and is overall more comfortable being the tough and blasé person around. If someone is down, she would rather give advice or provide them with a distraction (a la “I’d like some help with this thing”) but in truth, she just tries her best to give them room to process whatever they are going through. In terms of things like affection… I think the best way to put it may be that she is touch/intimacy starved. In her culture, in her occupation, in the Circle, she was expected to refrain from excessive displays of closeness towards others and to her, being cast into a position of military leadership makes it even more so her duty to keep to herself. It doesn’t necessarily help that in the beginning Alistair relies on her and she ends up in a “stoic but supportive leader” role. So with that in mind, she is actually… very giddy and nervous when it comes to most kinds of intimacy, and it can only really be seen by someone with whom she is so comfortable that she doesn’t feel the need to hide it. It’s kind of funny, because in my mind she ends up gradually going from a quiet recluse to awful joke bursts, “this rock reminded me of you, …..just get it wet first”, to “would you like a hug” and all the way to borderline ridiculous proclamations of love and PDA, but only with Zevran. And *usually* in private, although it does kind of spill over with time.
For anyone stumbling onto this post, you can find the ask game here :D

Yara xD
Of course! XD I am never not down to talk about my bbygirl
From this!
She looooves chips/fries and will actually bite if you try to steal some from her, as some of her crewmates have learned the hard way.
She never really learned how to swim. At most, all she did was wade around in the tidal pools on Phestris Island where she grew up. Losing the ability to swim after eating a Devil Fruit didn't really affect her much at all.
She has a soft spot for animals. Her best friends growing up were the rat-killing cats that the nuns at the convent kept around. She would steal kitchen scraps for them to try to coax them into approaching her. Because of this, she finds Minks extremely cute.
Her first bounty poster was issued under only her first name. (It was likely reported to the Marine higher-ups that her full name was Dracule Yara, but dropping the 'Dracule' was a conscious decision from said higher-ups who didn't want her association with a Warlord to be made public). It wasn't until she officially joined the Whitebeard Pirates that the posters were re-issued under her chosen name 'Bravada Yara', aka 'Hellcat'.
Speaking of her nickname, the first Marine to brand her 'Hellcat Yara' did so because although she had been disarmed, she used her sharp nails to scratch him across the face so viciously that it left permanent scars.
There is a female Humandrill on Kuraigana Island who has copied her swordplay perfectly and carries around a reproduction of Yoake.
Mihawk and Yara have an identical taste in wine. If one of them likes or dislikes something, there's pretty much a 100-percent chance the other will agree.
After Wano, Yara gets the Shimotsuki crest tattooed on her back.
Following the events of Marineford (in the canon timeline), she can no longer stomach donuts. Just looking at them makes her ill.
Her engagement ring looks like this. She never bothered to ask Ace where he got it from-- and frankly, she doesn't want to know.
tysm for the ask! <3

Thanks for the reply. I sort of understand some of the defenses for the classic suit but I think there's the elephant in the room of her wearing a costume that might as well have "US military propaganda" painted on it. And given the criticisms her run by Tom King has gotten, I'm not sure if a return to the classic suit will do her image any good.
I don't think Wonder Woman's costume (regardless of iteration) is inherently "US military propaganda" any more than Superman's is. They both have the same color scheme: red, gold, and blue. She—like Superman, like Captain America, like any other character whose Golden Age era looks and gimmicks were in part conceptualized as acts of US wartime propaganda—has grown to encompass many themes and purposes beyond that original purpose. I think there are aspects of the costume's design that have historically been and generally continue to be explained through a very American lens, but they don't inherently have to be that way.
While Diana's classic costumes have been explained in a variety of ways—including her creating her Wonder Woman suit out of an American flag in the Golden Age and as an Amazonian way of honoring Steve Trevor's mother (Diana Rockwell Trevor) in the post-Crisis universe—there have been plenty of other explanations for certain aspects of her look that aren't related to the American flag. For example, her stars (like Donna's suit, like Cassie's earrings, like Yara's tiara) have also canonically been explained as a symbol of the Amazons' connections to divinity and the overarching presence of Greek mythology in her lore.
I also don't think we should be prioritizing superhero looks based on who's writing them and potentially unfortunate messages that any given writer could send by writing a character who "looks like that." Diana existed 80 years before Tom King and she will last 80 years after him; her look should not be dependent on peoples' issues with a single writer who will likely be gone from the book within the next two years. Besides, any writer can screw up what a character stands for regardless of what costume they're wearing; just ask people who've read John Byrne's Superman and Wonder Woman runs.
Also frankly, her costume isn't going to have any real bearing on whether or not Tom King's run on the title comes off as American propaganda. He does a great job of that all on his own, and the costume isn't going to make any real difference on the scale there.

unorganized far cry 6 thoughts that have been plaguing me for days now:
out of all the regions, maximas matanzas' was sadly the weakest one. i really wish they'd shown more of just how cruel the true yaran academy and the abusive system maría marquessa was in charge of really were. you can find notes about it at different outposts and restricted areas, sure, but i wish there was more to it in general. propaganda is a lethal weapon, and i wish we got to see more on how that impacts yara and its culture.
especially when you consider the whole subplot and the lore with oluso, the oluwas, and the triada. the fact this indigenous yaran culture and religion is so hidden as the game's events take place... far cry has just always like. hit the nail on the head with the overarching theme of colonization done through brutalistic military (or psuedomilitary) force.
i wish we saw more of the oluwas and the triada...
that said, i really enjoyed how they showed how easy dani (as an individual) really had it in terms of escape in comparison to people like paolo. alejo was the one who'd made the deal with bembé to get him and dani out of there; dani just knew they had a free ticket. paolo is the mirror to alejo in that sense... he made the deal to try getting himself and talia out, it fell through, and now paolo is stuck paying that price.
speaking of maría marquessa... i want more castillo family drama. i so badly wish we could have seen more interactions between maría and diego and antón.
i wholeheartedly believe that behind the scenes, maría was there for diego. the bits we do see really give off the vibe that she cared for him and would die for her son (i mean, she died... not for him tho-) and i just... i wish we saw that. more. whether through small interactions in existing scenes, new scenes, or in notes, of how being a mother has impacted her/her work.
also idgaf what anybody says, the queer representation in this game is incredible. the subtler confirmations (re: clara garcia effectively being confirmed by her voice actress) and the outright demonstrations (re: paolo and rosa mel/gilberto, to name a few) are just so... good. and diverse in their own right. paolo's line about his revolution not ending when yara's does is so fucking good and he made many points.
once again spreading my agenda that juan cortez and willis huntley were enemies/allies/lovers with benefits like... the tension between them in the comics? the fact there's notes (iirc) about willis you can find. the fact the dog tag charm you can get for dani's gun(s) are willis'???
circling back, i can see why they did this system (both in terms of logistics and themes; i remember what lucky mama said about dani being like el lobo) but... i still lowkey wish we got human companions/amigos in addition to the animals. imagine if they kept the current amigos, introduced some of the recurring side characters as potential amigos. and either had it where you could only have one amigo at a time, or utilized a fallout-esque system of "one human; one non-human".
and there's more to this but i can't like formulate it. a lot of it just boils down to i wish we saw more sides to the central and side characters and saw them a bit more fleshed out...
that said far cry 6 is my favorite far cry. like. genuinely. i LOVE the others (esp 3 and 4.. my beloveds...), and i liked the stories of 2 and new dawn... but MAN i just. love. far cry 6 and i think it has so much good potential and an astonishing environment.
i'm just a whore for lore and i need to know everything and flesh it out and OUGHHH...

The Tōka Tōka no Mi / Pass Pass Fruit
Tumblr media
At last, the meta post for my fan-made Devil Fruit! Tried to write it like a wiki entry (below the cut!). No spoilers for the anime as the events described below are purely my own lore.
The Tōka Tōka no Mi is a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allows for anything with a physical presence to pass through the user’s body and vice versa. It was eaten by Bravada Yara prior to her joining the Whitebeard Pirates.
Etymology
Tōka (透過) is Japanese for “transmission”, “transparency” or “permeation”
In English, it is known as the “Pass Pass Fruit”
Appearance
The fruit is round in shape with a blue spherical core. Attached to the core are smaller yellowish-green spheres which are partially submerged into the core, as if passing through it. A twisted green stem extends from the top of the fruit, part of which is curled around itself.
Strengths
The Tōka Tōka no Mi is primarily a defensive fruit, granting the user the ability to negate any regular physical attack by allowing that attack to pass straight through their body. Barring the application of seastone or strong haki, physical weapons of all types are rendered completely ineffective. This includes but is not limited to blades, projectiles, elemental attacks such as lightning or fire, and hand-to-hand combat. Even a simple unwanted touch will not affect the user, as the offender will not be able to make physical contact and will instead pass through the user’s body. While the immunity to physical attacks that this fruit grants shares some similarities with the effects of an elemental Logia fruit, the Tōka Tōka no Mi is unique in that it enables the user to in turn bypass any obstacles in their path simply by walking right through them, whether it be walls, barricades, or even other people.
The user may also choose to deactivate the fruit’s powers at their will, which becomes particularly effective when the user has embedded part of themselves within an object or even an enemy’s body, which will cause breakage around whatever the user has chosen to embed themselves within.
Like other Paramecia fruits, this fruit is capable of being awakened. In its awakened form, the Tōka Tōka no Mi allows its user to transmit the fruit’s powers to any person or object the user touches, which if used effectively can alter the physics of a battlefield itself. The effects last until the user’s haki runs out.
Weaknesses
Unlike the vast powers of a Logia fruit, the Tōka Tōka no Mi grants no combat boons other than possible deactivation at a key moment to do damage to the user’s surroundings or to an opponent’s body. The deactivation is in of itself risky, however, as it can leave the deactivated parts of the user’s own body vulnerable. Furthermore, haki which is sufficient to overpower that of the user’s will negate the fruit’s effects and allow the attacker to land a blow on the user’s physical body regardless.
The user is also not immune to non-physical secondary effects of physical attacks such as a toxic gas released from a poisonous substance or smoke inhalation from a fire. Although the user cannot be crushed by a falling object, they will still take damage if they themselves fall. Otherwise, the user is affected by the standard Devil Fruit weaknesses.
Usages
Since the Tōka Tōka no Mi grants very little in the way of attack powers, it is most effectively utilised in combination with martial arts or weaponry. As a swordswoman, Yara has adapted the fruit’s abilities into her combat style. Known for her vicious slashing attacks, she is able to withstand what would otherwise be reckless close-quarters combat since most opponents she confronts are unable to do her any damage. By effectively utilising the fruit’s immense defensive capabilities with strong, precise swordplay, Yara has become a fearsome fighter well worth her significant bounty.
The fruit is also useful for navigating battlefields since the user can ignore any regular obstacles in their path. At the battle of Marineford, Yara is seen charging directly through rows of Marine soldiers, only stopping when encountering the seastone-infused walls surrounding the bay. Yara also uses the fruit’s powers to essentially create shortcuts for herself. She can quickly pass through solid barriers, preventing opponents from reaching her with their weapon. This also prevents them from pursuing her, making them lose sight of her as soon as she is on the other side of the barrier. With these applications, Yara can use the battlefield’s terrain to her advantage.
Outside of battle, Yara is frequently shown using her powers for trivial purposes. A running gag has her startling her crewmates by walking unannounced through the walls of the Moby Dick rather than using the door. In one scene, Ace finds himself unable to give her a hug when she employs her powers to keep him from touching her until he has taken a shower.
History
The fruit resided for an unknown amount of time at the Sisters of Heavenly Mercy Convent on Phestris Island in the Grand Line, where it was kept locked in a wooden box in the convent’s vault alongside other treasures thought to contain significant holy or unholy powers. It remained there untouched until the Phestris Island Incident, when a cell of Cipher Pol 5 agents led by Commander Thalamo Gustus ransacked the convent in order to locate an item thought to offer insight into the decryption of the Poneglyphs.
The Phestris Island Incident
Though the full details of this event were not made public, a record of it still exists in the classified Cipher Pol archives. It was triggered by intelligence received by a different Cipher Pol cell relating to a mysterious artifact known only as “the codex”, the existence of which has not been definitively proven. According to government theories, the codex is a partial record that survived the Void Century and could be used to potentially decipher some of the symbols displayed on the Poneglyphs. The intelligence suggested that this artifact was being kept at a vault of sacred objects in a small convent on Phestris Island, so a small cell of CP5 agents under the command of Thalamo Gustus were dispatched to quickly recover it.
At first, the relationship between the CP5 agents and the nuns at the convent were cordial, as the Mother Superior Margureta granted them permission to examine the artifacts in the large, sprawling vault to find what they were looking for. However, after three days of searching turned up no results, Gustus began to grow impatient. Suspecting that the nuns were hiding the codex’s true location, he ordered his agents to continue their search; this time much more forcefully. Walls were torn down and anything deemed ‘useless’ was trampled underfoot. When the nuns protested against the harsh treatment CP5 gave to their sacred artifacts, they were met with violence.
After an additional three days of searching turned up no results, Gustus ordered every single person in the convent, both the nuns and the orphaned girls they cared for, to be rounded up. They were held in the vault for twenty-four hours without food, water, or sleep. Guns were kept pointed at every person as CP5 interrogated each of the adults one at a time. A child who made any noise at all was immediately shot at. Gustus continued to demand that the nuns give up the codex, their pleas that they didn’t know what he was talking about falling on deaf ears.
When one of the older nuns passed out from the torture inflicted upon her, thirteen-year-old Yara, then one of the wards at the convent, took the opportunity presented by the ensuing confusion to try to escape. She successfully got through the door and ran down the labyrinthine corridors of the vault with the CP5 agents in hot pursuit, eventually making it to a small room that CP5 had already ransacked. She shut and locked the heavy door behind her and tried to formulate a plan, only then noticing a damaged wooden box. Opening it in hopes of finding a weapon, she instead discovered a strange-looking fruit. Recognizing what it was, and with CP5 about to break down the door, Yara made the split-second gamble to consume the Devil Fruit. Upon eating it, she learned it was called the Tōka Tōka no Mi, and barely had enough time to grasp the concept of its powers before CP5 broke down the door.
With her new abilities, Yara passed through the CP5 agents and headed back into the main room, where she discovered, much to her horror, that Gustus had begun his interrogation of the convent’s beloved old librarian, Sister Martha. Yara demanded that he stop, but Gustus, unaware that she had just consumed a Devil Fruit, merely laughed mockingly in response. He approached her, brandishing his baton, and took a swing at her, only for it to pass straight through her body. However, before Gustus had a chance to register that his attack had no effect, Yara drew back her fist and attempted to punch him. Unable to control her newly-acquired powers, her fist passed through his chest then suddenly deactivated, striking the man’s heart and crushing it instantly.
The CP5 agents who had left the room in pursuit of the girl came back just in time to see their commander slumped over, dead, in front of the escaped teenager, whose arm was now soaked in blood. There was nothing Yara could do except run. With only the clothes on her back, she made it out of the convent and sprinted towards the docks. Using her new powers, she hid in the walls of a departing cargo ship, holding her breath as CP5 searched the area. When they were unable to find her on board, they fanned out to search the rest of the island. The ship sailed away, and Yara was safe-- for now.
Cipher Pol chose to retreat from Phestris Island shortly after in order to lay their commander’s body to rest, leaving behind a partially-destroyed convent and a ton of broken artifacts. The codex was not recovered (it was later begrudgingly admitted that it had probably never been there in the first place and the initial intelligence received had been incorrect) and the mission was ultimately deemed a failure. Within only a few days of the incident, a bounty was issued for a teenage girl-- a ruthless killer who had viciously murdered a brave, innocent government agent in cold blood-- worth 48,000,000 Berry.

@supermarine-silvally's Bravada Yara is one of my favorite One Piece OCs. I'm a die hard shipper of Portada (Yara x Ace) and I love Yara's relationship with other characters, like Mihawk or Yamato. There's so much well thought out lore around this character, she almost feels like a character Oda himself created.

OC Name Meanings
Thank you so much for the tag @elveny! Your answers were so good and thoughtful that I feel like mine are going to be so dumb in comparison LMAO.
Rules: Search and post the meaning of your OC’s name (if you made their name up or they go by a nickname, post an explanation of how it came to you)! bonus if you can find something for their last name too.
*********
All right [cracks knuckles] I'll start from the top.
Mass Effect (original trilogy): Commander Adriana Shepard. I named her after my husband because he introduced me to the game. NOT VERY ORIGINAL, but named with love? 🤣
Mass Effect Andromeda: Mara Ryder. I honestly cannot remember why I chose this name for her. Vibes, probably? I often just pick a name that "feels" right...
Dragon Age Inquisition: okay, I made up sooo many fucking Lavellans, and when I first started writing, most of them were just named after Game of Thrones characters. This includes Elia, Arya, and Lyanna.
(By now, you may have noticed that all my OCs have names ending in "a". I do like names ending in "a." I am consistent that way. 😂)
Athera Lavellan is the DA:I OC whose name is the most thought-out. I borrowed it from FenxShiral's Elvhen book of names, and it means 'part of a dream', which thematically tied into her romance with Abelas.
But then there's Tamaris, which is another name that I chose because of vibes (it "felt right"). I will admit that I know someone named Tamaris and I love the name, but I was also surprised to find that this is coincidentally a name from FenxShiral's name dictionary - a fact that I used in my fic of her and Felassan.
Dragon Age 2: Rynne Hawke. Her name was also chosen for vibes; 'Rynne' struck me as a kind of fun, playful name. I think in-world, she is named after a great-aunt. (It's been a while since I revisited her, I think this is the lore. 🤣)
Dragon Age Origins: Yara Mahariel. BACK TO THE TRIED AND TRUE METHOD OF USING GAME OF THRONES NAMES. 🤣💀
Baldur's Gate 3: my main Tav is Eilaena Valderol, aka Brynn Bladetongue. THIS WAS THE NAME I THOUGHT ABOUT THE MOST. Her birth name, Eilaena, is a drow name broadly inspired by the goddess Eilistraee. Her last name is her mother's name, which I used a D&D name generator to come up with. Her criminal alias, Brynn , was borrowed from an adventurer she admired who was a regular at the theater-tavern where she grew up. 'Bladetongue' is a stagename-like surname that she came up with; in her words, it's masturbatory (flattering herself for her silver tongue), and she likes the alliteration. She's half-wood elf/half-drow, and she purposely gave herself a human-sounding alias to fuck with people LOL.
My other BG3 OC is Tavanah. I liked the idea of using the default "non-special" name of 'Tav', but making it special by having her romance, Rolan, be the only one who calls her by her full name.
Tagging forward: once again, to genuinely anyone who wants to play!!! But let's start with @seabirdsong @iamcayc @novarunestone @elinorbard @crackinglamb @johaerys-writes @alyssalenko @vorchagirl @hollyand-writes
