In the country I’m from and have never left, speech and debate is not taught in schools, neither is policy. What Americans seem to be taught in Civics is barely touched on here. Instead, debate is an after school competitive “cultural” activity or club. You do it against other schools if your school can afford to travel to meets. You have a coach if your school can afford to pay one. A teacher might volunteer to coach or help you, but they have not been trained to teach or coach it. The money matters, as we’re one of the most unequal countries on Earth.
Apart from a few exceptions, debate is only accessible in English, which is the home language maybe of 1 of 4 people here. If you speak something else at home it’s TERRIFYING going up against kids from a school with native English speakers. It’s even more scary when your opponents have had regular practice and coaching because they can afford it.
Despite that, thousands of kids here do choose debate. They do it poor and scared and in their second or third language. They are so brave. Our system is underfunded and unfair and a bunch of coaches don’t get paid, it often costs them money to be able to volunteer. Too many kids don’t get the chance to debate but so many of those who do come back to volunteer in turn.
Anyway, this Saturday on Lovett Or Leave It, Jon Lovett ended his live NYC show by thanking his high school speech and debate teacher, who was in the audience. The man has worked for Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and Aaron Sorkin, but this was the longest thank you I’ve heard him give in in the 7 years I’ve been listening to him.
If like me, you got to speak because people took the time to nurture you, if you came back and helped more kids learn, also like I did… well, it was a lot to hear his thanks. I don’t know anything that builds confidence like debating does. I can’t even begin to describe what it feels like to see kids get that confidence when you know how much it’s altered your life for the better.
If you are thinking about teaching or coaching those skills, please, do it. Make sure new generations get the mic. If you’re a young person thinking about debating, do it, take the mic.

Beyond the Classroom: Exploring Enrichment Programs for Children
In today's fast-paced world, parents are increasingly seeking opportunities to provide their children with experiences that go beyond traditional classroom learning. Enrichment programs for children offer a wealth of benefits, from academic enrichment to creative exploration and social development. In this blog post, we'll delve into the world of enrichment programs, exploring the various types available, the benefits they offer, and how parents can choose the right programs for their children.
Understanding Enrichment Programs for Children
Enrichment programs for children are designed to complement and enhance traditional education by providing opportunities for additional learning, skill development, and personal growth. These programs come in various forms, catering to different interests, talents, and age groups.
Types of Enrichment Programs for Children
Academic Enrichment: Academic enrichment programs focus on enhancing children's academic skills and knowledge in specific subjects such as maths, science, language arts, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). These programs often incorporate hands-on activities, experiments, and projects to make learning engaging and interactive.
Skill-based Enrichment: Skill-based enrichment programs aim to develop children's practical skills and talents in areas such as music, art, sports, coding, robotics, and culinary arts. These programs provide opportunities for children to explore their interests, discover new passions, and develop valuable skills that can benefit them both academically and personally.
Creative Enrichment: Creative enrichment programs focus on nurturing children's creativity, imagination, and self-expression through activities such as drama, dance, theater, creative writing, and visual arts. These programs encourage children to explore their artistic abilities, experiment with different mediums, and express themselves in meaningful ways.
Benefits of Enrichment Programs for Children
Academic Enrichment and Cognitive Development: Academic enrichment programs provide children with opportunities to deepen their understanding of core subjects and develop essential academic skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical reasoning. By engaging in hands-on activities, experiments, and projects, children not only reinforce what they've learned in the classroom but also gain a deeper appreciation for the subject matter. Narrative: Emily, a sixth-grade student, struggled with maths in school. However, after enrolling in an after-school maths enrichment program, she discovered a newfound love for numbers. Through hands-on activities and games, she began to see maths in a different light, finding joy in solving problems and exploring mathematical concepts. As her confidence grew, so did her grades, and she soon became one of the top maths students in her class.
Skill-based Enrichment and Practical Learning: Skill-based enrichment programs offer children the opportunity to develop practical skills and talents that can benefit them in various aspects of their lives. Whether it's learning to play a musical instrument, mastering a new sport, or honing their coding skills, these programs provide a supportive environment for children to explore their interests, build confidence, and achieve their goals. Narrative: James, an aspiring young musician, dreamt of playing the guitar but didn't know where to start. With the support of his parents, he enrolled in a music enrichment program at a local community center. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, James learned the fundamentals of music theory, technique, and performance. With each lesson, he grew more confident and proficient, eventually showcasing his skills at a recital for family and friends. Today, James continues to pursue his passion for music, playing in a band and composing his own songs.
Creative Enrichment and Artistic Expression: Creative enrichment programs provide children with opportunities to explore their artistic abilities, unleash their imagination, and express themselves in meaningful ways. Whether it's painting, drawing, acting, or dancing, these programs foster creativity, self-confidence, and a sense of identity. Narrative: Sarah, a shy and reserved nine-year-old, struggled to express herself verbally. However, when she discovered a passion for painting in an art enrichment program, she found a new way to communicate and connect with others. Through her artwork, Sarah expressed her thoughts, feelings, and emotions in vibrant colors and bold strokes. With each painting, she gained confidence and a sense of empowerment, eventually sharing her work with the world at a local art exhibition. Today, Sarah continues to use art as a form of self-expression and advocacy, inspiring others with her creativity and courage.
Social and Emotional Development: Enrichment programs provide children with opportunities to interact with peers, collaborate on projects, and develop essential social and emotional skills such as communication, teamwork, empathy, and resilience. By participating in group activities, discussions, and games, children learn to navigate social dynamics, build meaningful relationships, and develop a sense of belonging and community. Narrative: Daniel, a ten-year-old with autism spectrum disorder, struggled to connect with his peers and engage in social interactions. However, when he joined a theater enrichment program for children with special needs, he found a supportive and inclusive environment where he could express himself freely and connect with others through the power of storytelling. Through drama games, improvisation exercises, and group performances, Daniel learned to communicate effectively, collaborate with his peers, and express his emotions in constructive ways. With each rehearsal, he grew more confident and self-assured, eventually starring in a school play and inspiring others with his talent and resilience.
Overcoming Common Barriers to Participation
Despite the numerous benefits of enrichment programs, many parents face common barriers when it comes to enrolling their children in these programs. However, with proactive planning and creative solutions, these barriers can be overcome.
Financial Constraints and AffordabilityMany parents hesitate to enroll their children in enrichment programs due to financial constraints. However, there are often affordable or free options available, such as community-based programs, scholarships, and sliding-scale fees. Additionally, some programs offer payment plans or discounts for families with limited financial means. By exploring different options and resources, parents can find enrichment programs that fit within their budget and offer excellent value for money.
Time Constraints and Scheduling ConflictsBalancing children's enrichment activities with other commitments such as school, extracurriculars, and family obligations can be challenging. However, by carefully managing schedules and prioritizing activities, parents can create time for enrichment programs. Consider enrolling children in programs that offer flexible scheduling options, such as weekend classes, evening sessions, or online courses, that fit into your family's routine.
Access and AvailabilityAccess to enrichment programs can vary depending on factors such as location, transportation, and resources. However, there are often local community centers, libraries, schools, and online platforms that offer a variety of enrichment programs for children. Additionally, some programs provide transportation services or virtual options for families who may face barriers to access. By exploring different resources and reaching out to community organizations, parents can find enrichment programs that are accessible and inclusive for their children.
Choosing the Right Enrichment Program for Your Child
With so many enrichment programs available, choosing the right one for your child can feel overwhelming. However, by considering your child's interests, strengths, and areas for growth, as well as logistical factors such as location, schedule, and cost, you can make an informed decision that aligns with your child's needs and preferences.
Assessing Your Child's Interests and Goals: Start by talking to your child about their interests, passions, and goals. What subjects or activities do they enjoy? What skills or talents would they like to develop? By understanding your child's interests and aspirations, you can narrow down your options and focus on programs that are meaningful and relevant to them.
Researching Available Programs and Resources: Once you have a sense of your child's interests, research available programs and resources in your community. Look for programs that align with your child's interests and offer a comprehensive curriculum, experienced instructors, and positive reviews from past participants. Consider exploring online platforms and virtual programs that provide flexibility and convenience for busy families.
Considering Logistical Factors: When choosing an enrichment program, consider logistical factors such as location, schedule, and cost. Choose a program that is conveniently located and fits into your family's routine. Look for programs with flexible scheduling options, such as evening or weekend classes, that accommodate your child's other commitments. Additionally, consider the cost of the program and whether financial assistance or scholarships are available for families in need.
Seeking Recommendations and Reviews: Finally, don't hesitate to seek recommendations and reviews from other parents, educators, and community members who have experience with enrichment programs. Talk to friends, neighbours, and colleagues who may have enrolled their children in similar programs and ask for their insights and recommendations. Additionally, read online reviews and testimonials to get a sense of the program's quality and reputation.
Tips for Maximising the Benefits
Once you've chosen an enrichment program for your child, there are several strategies you can use to maximize the benefits and support your child's growth and development.
Set Clear Goals and Expectations: Start by setting clear goals and expectations for your child's participation in the program. What do you hope they will gain from the experience? Whether it's improving academic skills, developing a new talent, or building social connections, articulate your goals and discuss them with your child to ensure alignment and motivation.
Encourage Active Engagement and Participation: Encourage your child to actively engage in the program by participating in class discussions, completing assignments, and seeking feedback from instructors. Encourage them to ask questions, share their ideas, and collaborate with their peers. By taking an active role in the learning process, your child will deepen their understanding and retention of the material and develop important skills such as critical thinking and communication.
Provide Support and Encouragement at Home: Support your child's participation in the enrichment program by providing encouragement and support at home. Help them with homework or practice assignments, attend performances or showcases, and celebrate their achievements and progress. Create a positive and nurturing environment where your child feels empowered to explore their interests and pursue their passions.
Recognise and Celebrate Achievements: Finally, recognise and celebrate your child's achievements and milestones throughout the program. Whether it's mastering a new skill, completing a project, or overcoming a challenge, acknowledge their efforts and celebrate their successes. By celebrating their achievements, you'll boost their confidence, motivation, and sense of accomplishment, encouraging them to continue exploring their interests and pursuing their goals.
Case Studies: Real-Life Examples of Successful Participation
To illustrate the transformative impact of enrichment programs, let's explore some real-life examples of children who have benefited from their participation.

With each lesson, her confidence grew, and she soon became one of the top maths students in her class. Today, Mia excels in maths and attributes her success to the support and encouragement she received in the enrichment program.
Skill-based Enrichment: Ethan's Quest for Musical Mastery: Ethan, a talented young musician, dreamt of mastering the piano but didn't know where to start. With the support of his parents, he enrolled in a music enrichment program at a local community center. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, Ethan learned the fundamentals of music theory, technique, and performance. With each lesson, he grew more confident and proficient, eventually showcasing his skills at a recital for family and friends. Today, Ethan continues to pursue his passion for music, playing in a band and composing his own songs, thanks to the foundation he built in the enrichment program.
Creative Enrichment: Ava's Journey of Self-Discovery through Art: Ava, a quiet and introspective eight-year-old, struggled to express herself verbally. However, when she joined an art enrichment program, she found a new way to communicate and connect with others through painting and drawing. Through her artwork, Ava expressed her thoughts, feelings, and emotions in vibrant colours and bold strokes. With each painting, she gained confidence and a sense of empowerment, eventually sharing her work with the world at a local art exhibition. Today, Ava continues to use art as a form of self-expression and advocacy, inspiring others with her creativity and courage.
Conclusion

By providing children with opportunities to explore their interests, develop new skills, and connect with others, these programs play a crucial role in supporting their growth and development. Whether it's mastering a new subject, discovering a passion, or building lifelong friendships, enrichment programs empower children to reach their full potential and thrive in all areas of their lives. Navigating My Way To Success As A Nonprofit Founder.
Tumblr media
Taking the leap and putting my ambitions at the top of my to do list came with a whirlwind of emotions; everyday for the last 3 years I have been on a roller-coaster of emotions, no other endeavor I have ventured into has ever given me such a ride of emotion. From the highs of contentment when I see progress in my impact, to the lows of loneliness and impostor syndrome when I question if I am really cut out for all of this.
While holding my breath in anticipation of my next emotion, it is safe to say that I have always felt that Oyisa has given me a huge sense of liberation. Each day I learn to trust my journey more and more meaning I am able to trust myself and my ambitions more.
It did take me a year and half to define my mission, about two years for a handful of people to understand (not really see it per say) my vision, and each day I make it a point to live and embody the values I want to be known for. And now I am ready to officially brand;
myself as a founder/director
and Oyisa as an organization supporting young women
We all have different versions of success and how to get to our set destinations, so I did a little self inventory and explored the conscious efforts I took to both feel and be more confident as legitimate Social Entrepreneur. Here are a few coordinates I followed in to get me this far in journey:
INVEST IN YOUR VALUABLE ASSETS - More often than not we are told to invest in ourselves. But seeing as I was going into a field of service, I found that investing in the people around me would be more beneficial and played a bigger role in my success. I invested my time in getting the people around me excited about helping me solve a problem by including them in my solution. I asked them to read through draft after draft of my constitution while taking their notes into consideration and showing their input in various concepts and designs. I basically trained the people that frequent my life and play a huge role in how think, feel, and act on a daily basis to provide me with the confidence that allowed me to operate even more effectively and efficiently. By including my support system during my foundational and the most fundamental stage of Oyisa, I wanted them to find value in Oyisa by including and showing them that they play an important role not only in the future success of the organization, but my showing them that their contributions play a huge role in the lives of the young people we serve. Now I am not saying neglect yourself and devalue your importance as individual, but you do need people besides yourself to believe in what your product/service is offering.
DON'T MIND THE BUDGET - I attend a lot of networking events with like minded people, my favorites being Social Enterprise Connect and #FundHer hosted by PAWA/Insyts, and one thing I picked up is more often than not; successful people do not wait for capital, they find capital along the way. when I started Oyisa, I don't think I even had a healthy personal bank account, instead I was unemployed and sleeping on my brothers couch. I understood that "NO ONE WANTS TO BE OFFERED A HYPERCRITICAL CAKE!" If I told you I have a slice of cake for you but I need you to bring a recipe, all the ingredients and we will be using your oven. I can bet you my middle finger that you will not be interested. So basically start with what you have your - intellect, time and public resources are a good place to start.
DON'T FOCUS ON THE BUZZ - Communication is an important aspects of growing a business, but media attention must be driven by real growth and traction in core areas. I knew I wasn't fully equipped to handle high levels of traffic on social media especially since I didnt really know what I was doing. My anxiety couldn't allow me to risk providing poor/inconsistent experience for my online audience let alone the young people I was planning on supporting. There is no point in achieving media success that outpaces progress in other areas, especially the quality of the product or service you are providing. Historically, publicity can be an important early signal of a business's progress, helping attract the customers, partners, employees and investors you might need. . When you focus on the buzz too early, you may not be able to deliver on your promises to your clients. Instead I focused on crafting a clear story about Oyisa, why it was founded and what my goals are, this laid the groundwork for attracting and motivating a team, developing a strategy and pitching to customers and investors.
BECOME THE NICHE - If I am being honest, I had been struggling with my marketing plan because as a non profit organization I have a wide variety of stakeholders I need to market to; donors, volunteers, beneficiaries, communities etc. It felt a little overwhelming when asked to create a niche because I have so many people I need to sell the organization to. So to make things easier for myself, I decided to create a comfortable and suitable position for myself and Oyisa that way I will be confident enough to do amazing work and the market will comes to me. There are thousand of people and organizations who have needs they want met, so why am I going out of your way trying to find people who are already looking for a solution I have to offer. The same way we are told there are no new ideas, I believe there are no new needs either. So find a place where your product or service fits in best and stand out there - your market will find you eventually as long as you position your service/product as a valuable compared to most.
BE CONSISTENT - I used to think this meant showing up everyday with anything to offer your client. But now I understand it means consistently adding value, and the only example that articulates this beautifully for me is Frank Ocean. Since 2011 Frank Ocean has released mixtape, 2 albums that are 4 years apart yet still maintains an average of 24.4 million listeners on Spotify. He constantly shows up with quality products that add value to the lives of his listeners - and that is what I want to do. Consistently creating quality programs that add value to our beneficiaries, stakeholders and the communities we serve in.

I still think emotional cheating is mostly kinda stupid, but I do at least consider its legitimacy after recognizing emotional incest. You could just delegate it to unhealthy emotional boundaries (you're briefly trained on this before you work with a licensed program that deals with children and teens), but have you seen how some parents will treat their children as potential partners 😭 it's to such a degree that it makes sense to give it a name

Expert Advice: Choosing the Right Projects to Support in an Indian Youth Empowerment NGO
Tumblr media
Navigating the landscape of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in India focused on youth empowerment can be a challenging yet rewarding endeavor. With so many organizations and projects vying for support, it's essential to make informed decisions to ensure your contributions have a meaningful impact.
The Importance of Youth Empowerment in India
India, a country with a significant young population, faces unique challenges and opportunities when it comes to youth empowerment. To truly understand the importance of supporting such initiatives, let's take a closer look at the statistical overview and social context.
Statistical Overview
In India, over 65% of the population is under the age of 35, making it one of the youngest countries in the world. This demographic presents both a demographic dividend and a potential challenge if not harnessed effectively.
Importance in Social Context
Youth empowerment is crucial in addressing issues like unemployment, education gaps, and social disparities. Empowering young Indians not only uplifts individuals but also contributes to the overall progress of the nation.
Why Selecting the Right Projects Matters
In a sector saturated with good intentions, it’s crucial to differentiate between projects that simply aim high and those that can genuinely make a measurable impact. Here are some factors to consider:
Efficiency and Effectiveness: Supporting projects with a track record of efficiency and effectiveness ensures that your contributions have a tangible impact. Look for projects that have clear goals, well-defined strategies, and a history of achieving results.
Long-term Impact: While short-term gains are valuable, focus on projects that also prioritize long-term impact. Sustainable change often takes time, and a project's ability to endure and thrive beyond initial funding is a key indicator of success.
Ethical Considerations: Consider the ethical aspects of the projects you support. Ensure that they uphold values such as inclusivity, fairness, and respect for human rights.
Criteria for Selecting Projects
Relevance to Local Needs: The first step in evaluating a project is understanding its relevance to the specific needs of the local youth population. A project that directly addresses local challenges is more likely to succeed.
Evidence-based Approach: Strong projects are built on a foundation of evidence, not just anecdotal stories or emotional appeal. Look for projects that use data and research to inform their strategies and measure their impact.
Sustainability: A project’s long-term viability often hinges on its sustainability, both financially and in terms of community engagement. Projects that involve and empower the local community are more likely to thrive.
Consider the Target Group: The demographics of the youth population being targeted by a project can significantly impact its efficacy. Consider factors such as age group, gender, and socioeconomic background when evaluating projects.
Types of Projects and their Impact: Not all youth empowerment projects are created equal; they range from educational initiatives to vocational training to mental health support. Understand the different types of projects and their potential impact on the youth population.
Case Studies or Examples: Look for case studies or examples of how the project has positively impacted the lives of young people. Real-world success stories can be strong indicators of a project's effectiveness.
Financial Aspects: Financial scrutiny goes beyond merely looking at a project's budget; it extends to understanding the cost-efficiency and funding sources. Ensure that your support is being used efficiently and transparently.
Involvement of Local Communities: The participation and buy-in from the local community are often overlooked but critical factors in the project’s success. Projects that involve the community in decision-making and implementation tend to have a more significant and lasting impact.
Red Flags to Watch Out For
It's equally important to recognize when a project, no matter how well-intentioned, may not be worth supporting. Watch out for these red flags:
Lack of Transparency
Unproven Methods
High Administrative Costs
Conclusion
Choosing the right projects to support in an Indian youth empowerment NGO is a nuanced process that demands thoughtful evaluation and a commitment to making a real impact. By considering factors such as relevance, evidence-based approaches, sustainability, and community involvement, you can ensure that your contributions are directed towards initiatives that truly empower India's youth and contribute to their brighter future. Remember, the choices you make can shape the destiny of a nation's young generation.

The Impact of NGOs on Local Communities
Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) play a pivotal role in shaping the lives of individuals and communities worldwide. With a mission to bring positive change and address social issues, NGOs often focus on improving education, healthcare, livelihoods, and environmental conservation. In this blog post, we will explore the profound impact of NGOs on local communities, shedding light on their transformative work and the lasting benefits they bring to people's lives.
Tumblr media
Empowering Education and Skill Development
One of the fundamental areas where NGOs leave a significant impact is education. NGOs often establish schools, educational centers, and vocational training institutes in underserved communities, providing access to quality education and skill development opportunities. Through these initiatives, they empower individuals with knowledge and skills, opening doors to better job prospects and breaking the cycle of poverty.
Improving Healthcare Access
NGOs also play a crucial role in improving healthcare access in remote and marginalized communities. They set up medical camps, clinics, and health awareness programs, ensuring that essential healthcare services reach those who most need them. NGOs reduce preventable diseases and improve overall community well-being by addressing health issues at the grassroots level.
Strengthening Livelihoods and Economic Growth
NGOs enable sustainable economic growth in local communities by initiating various livelihood programs. They offer training in agriculture, small-scale business management, and entrepreneurship, empowering individuals to generate income and support their families. Such efforts lead to a reduction in unemployment and contribute to the growth of local economies.
Fostering Women Empowerment and Gender Equality
NGOs actively promote women's rights and gender equality. They create safe spaces for women to participate in decision-making and advocate for gender-sensitive policies. NGOs empower women to become self-reliant through education, skill-building, and micro-financing programs, fostering gender equity and promoting social progress.
Environmental Conservation and Sustainability
In the face of environmental challenges, NGOs champion the cause of conservation and sustainability. From planting trees to promoting eco-friendly practices, they engage local communities in preserving their natural resources. This approach helps protect the environment and ensures communities can access resources for future generations.
Disaster Relief and Humanitarian Aid
NGOs are vital in disaster relief efforts, responding promptly to natural calamities and humanitarian crises. Their swift action immediately assists affected communities, including food, clean water, shelter, and medical aid. NGOs also participate in long-term rebuilding efforts, helping communities recover and become more resilient.
Advocacy and Policy Change
NGOs advocate for social and political change to address local communities' systemic issues. They influence policies, conduct research, and engage with policymakers to ensure that the concerns of the marginalized are heard and acted upon.
