Comparable to: Forver and Ever (cdrama) ; that Winter the Wind Blows (kdrama) ; Angel’s Last Mission: Love (kdrama)

Well this drama is a roller coaster drama. What I mean by that is it starts off pretty meh, then gets really good, turns into meh again, gets really really good, slides into meh, then finishes in a ho hum ending. Another words there's many great moments and a lot of questionable ones. I mean it drags in a lot of places in my opinion, but the main male lead in this is excellent, he really steals the whole drama while sometimes the female lead, especially in the beginning, her character was written in a sort of an annoying manner. Not the actress's fault. I think what really aggravated me was the supporting characters, the best 'friends' story-lines, oof was it was hard to get through. I just fast forward throughout their scenes I'm sorry to say. 🤷 Overall the whole drama to me was mediocre at best.

best cdramas I’ve watched since the last one of these posts in 2022 (and some I’m still looking forward to seeing)

Heroes (watch on WeTV VIP | watch on bilibili) Adapted from the novel "Shuo Ying Xiong Shei Shi Ying Xiong" (说英雄谁是英雄) by Wen Rui An (温瑞安) starring Zeng ShunXi, Yang ChaoYue, Liu YuNing, Baron Chen and Meng ZiYi. I would’ve watched this thing for the cast only. Everyone is queer vibes. Not a flashy drama, but will emotionally shred you. The character development is totally worth it. Throughly entertaining, even when it punched you in the gut. 8/10

The Wind Blows From LongXi (watch on iQIYI VIP | watch on Viki) Adapted from novel "The Wind Rises in Longxi" (风起陇西) by Ma Bo Yong (马伯庸) starring Chen Kun and Bai Yu. I’ve been waiting for this drama for two years and it was worth every second of the wait. The cinematography in this thing is bonkers. The use of light and shadows, the muted colors, the indoor shots opening up into well-lit courtyards, the gritty sound mixing, the whole thing just blew my ass away. Chen Kun and Bai Yu are masters of their art. Fckn masterpiece. 11/10

Who Rules The World (watch on WeTV VIP | watch on Netflix) Adapted from the novel "Qie Shi Tian Xia" (且试天下) by Qing Ling Yue (倾泠月) starring Yang Yang, Zhao LuSi, and Xuan Lu. One of the rare romance dramas that really appealed to me. A well-balanced mix of court intrigue and martial world heroics. Unlimited blorbo potential. It’s hard to outshine Yang Yang (who gives major Mei Changsu vibes through like the first third of the drama) but Zhao LuSi and Xuan Lu together? Magnificent. Breathtaking. Brilliant. 8/10

The Legend of Hao Lan (watch on iQIYI VIP | watch on Viki | watch on tubi) starring Wu Jinyan and Nie Yuan. So this was like, The Story of Yanxi Palace cast, remixed. Was it great? Not really. Did I watch every episode? Yeah. I honestly think that Wu Jinyan could just make faces for 50+ sixty minute episodes, and I’d still watch every minute of it. Still, a fascinating take on the Warring States Period, and actually based on a woman who helped her son become the King of Qin, then ultimately the First Emperor of China. I think 99% of the budget went to costumes, and tbh, it was totally worth every penny. 7/10

(yeah, after all this, I rewatched Nirvana In Fire again)

The Silent Criminal (watch on Apple TV | watch on Bilibili | watch on iQIYI VIP | watch on Viki) starring Li Jiaming and Wen Sheng. So incredibly gay. Hilarious, yes, but predominantly gay. Murder, intrigue, suspense, pining; this little drama literally has everything. Did it impact my life and leave a long-lasting impression? Not really. But I was most throughly entertained. 7/10

My Heroic Husband (watch on Amazon Prime | watch on iQIYI VIP | watch on Viki) Adapted from the novel "Zhui Xu" (赘婿) by Fen Nu de Xiang Jiao (愤怒的香蕉). Starring Song Yi and Guo Qilin. Actually, the majority of Joy of Life cast is in this drama, including a cameo by Zhang Ruoyun in the very beginning. Cast aside tho, I fckn love this drama to pieces. Song Yi and Guo Qilin have amazing chemistry, and they’re so goddamn adorable together I can’t even stand it. The plot is far from complex but immensely satisfying. Excellent drama on a mediocre budget, one I plan to regularly rewatch. 8/10

Love Like The Galaxy~  Tell me about Ling Bu Yi first. Your Third Uncle didn’t tell me anything about undressing him, treating his wound, and going through life-or-death situation with him.

I picked up A Journey to Love again, even though I wanted to wait a little longer so I wouldn't be tempted to go into the tags while people were still complaining about the ending. I've managed to dodge most details so far, after all. But every other show I started from my backlog, the main character is an idiot.

I start LORD Critical World over again, because I only watched the first episode or two before, and yeah I remembered the main character is a charlatan but apparently he is also a complete moron. It's like... if Naruto was in a C-drama and played by a handsome 20-something, but it's still season one Naruto on the experience and intellect and annoyingness level.

Then I decide to play Miss the Dragon during work, because it's better to play something I've already seen so I can pay attention to work and not the plot, right? But the main character in that is also an idiot, this time in the innocent maiden variety. Like, I remember the first lifetime was rough and the later ones were more interesting (this is one of those shows where the heroine endures multiple lifetimes of suffering for love), but I forgot it was this bad. Also the CG dragon is not as handsome as the ones in Love Between Fairy and Devil or Back From the Brink or even Eternal Love (the dragon angle was wasted on that show, absolutely wasted). I did redo the scoring on Miss the Dragon a little because I forgot how much I enjoyed the music, but the show itself and the main character are worse than I remembered.

AND THEN I start Stand By Me (2021- the Dream of Chang'an one), because of my newly enhanced appreciation of Cheng Yi. Xuan Lu is in it and she's fantastic so far. So I want to know what's up with the emperor and the Ziyi Court or whatever they're called but again, the main character is awful, just absolutely short-sighted and stupid and annoying. Also, this is like the fourth "young girl's family is killed in a plot and she grows up to get revenge but falls in love with the killer(?)" story I've started, the second one with amnesia as a major plot point, and it's the worst of the lot. I was praying for the "MC's friend gets killed and she stops being so willful because the Stakes are Now Real for her personally" arc, because it's sure to come, this show is trotting out the tropes like they're inbred colts on Derby Day, but I don't know, I'm already soured on this show. I don't know if Cheng Yi can save it for me.

So I don't know how much more of these main characters I can take, especially since I recently watched The Moon Brightens for You and I'm still in pain from that. And like, I can deal with some purposefully unwise characters- Back From the Brink, Love Between Fairy and Devil, Heroes, Mysterious Lotus Casebook (also a Zeng Shunxi character- the man is developing a Type)- and if your character is stupid or unwise, but not annoying, I can deal with it. But if they are stupid AND annoying, I get a headache and start writing bad reviews.

I could never do this for a job. How do drama reviewers keep their sanity?
