Perro Viejo, Trucos Nuevos (Parte 2/2)

character building questions! prime numbers for the last oc you thought about!
oh shit THANK you omg omg
im thinking about my dnd/terrave oc hecla hespenhide...
2. she is so so reserved to call anyone her friend. maybe the only two ppl would be the soul-enfused automaton she made, erebus, and her teacher and headmaster arriana zolne-dragomir. even then, one of them she *made* and the other shes studied under for 30 years
3. mostly everybody. shes autistic and doesnt really have any reservations about acting weird around folks. if anything, shes more out of tune with her own emotions than other ppl are
5. hecla has only ever cried a handful of times and cannot do it on command
7. she really would only notice if you called out her full name. those closest to her could maybe get her attention with a "hesp"
11. a dead giveaway is that the real hecla wouldnt even bother trying to convince you shes the real one shdjfkh
13. she fakes a smile for crowds, when she has to. for Important People arriana introduces her to, for people who are interrupting her
17. what she notices in a mirror is fraying edges, broken clasps, loose threads. what others notice is that she looks so intensely tired, even when shes happy
19. she shuts them out. she could go for days without saying a word to them
23. her best friend, erebus, has almost no memories from when its soul was alive and walked the planes. but i dont think *she* knows she feels guilty about it. she wouldnt let on
29. incredulousness! this woman studied for 30 years at an academy that only requires 5-10
31. given that shes been stranded in a frigid wasteland for 5 years? she just survives it
37. hmmm.... shes worried she doesnt actually feel anything serious for anyone. shes worried shes just using everyone around her, without meaning to
41. shes picked up so many mannerisms from arriana that if she wasnt dwarven (and arriana elven) more ppl would assume their connection is familial
43. she doesnt understand ppl who havent Accomplished something. she was absolutely raised to be a workaholic
47. 👀... the first automaton she made. hes sitting in a closet in her study
53. arriana.

Yiddish insults are the best
My personal favorite is “May all your teeth fall out except for one so you can get toothache” (Ale tseyn zoln bay im aroysfaln, not eyner zol im blaybn oyf tsonveytung.)
With a lovely “Gut zol oyf im onshikn fin di tsen makes di beste.” In second place, meaning “God should visit upon him the best of the Ten Plagues.”
Honorable mention to “God should bless him with three people: one should grab him, the second should stab him and the third should hide him.” (Got zol im bentshn mit dray mentshn: eyner zol im haltn, der tsveyter zol im shpaltn un der driter zol im ba’haltn.), which is amazing, though extremely violent
And let’s not forget the amazing Yiddish book “If You Can’t Say Anything Nice, Say it in Yiddish”, which includes guides for both cussing and long-winded insults, and I highly recommend

real estate guy rolled up as i was pacing back & forth on the sidewalk, gesticulatulating wildly & flapping my hands, listening to that daniel kahn kadya molodowsky track, talking to myself out loud about translation, like "oh! yamen - vartn az mir zoln in zey zinken is slavic syntax, that's моря - ждут, пока в них мы не утонем"...he got the Full Raya Experience & i truly don't know how to be not Like This in public anymore, which bodes poorly for our ever-expanding police state & its approach to attention-catching non-normative behavior

This was supposed to be posted since the past month but omg college has been really rough lately. Anyway, hi everyone! I drew my bf's OC and mine with a similar style of his favorite Pokemon because, in september 27th, we celebrated 3 years together! 💙✨💜 I drew this because I recreated the pixelarts on Minecraft and I printed them to put them on a picture frame that I made with tongue depressors. I wanted to surprise my bf with the gifts that I was able to make with the time and resources that I had < 3

English
A little bit of sun, a bit of rain A quiet place to put your head down, As long as you're well, you can be happy. A shoe, a sock, a dress with no patches, In your pocket three or four dollars, As long as you're well, you can be happy. The air is free for everyone equally, The sun shines for everyone, poor or rich, Some joy, some laughter, a drink with friends, As long as you're well, you can be happy. One person seeks riches, one seeks wealth, One - the whole world. Another thinks complete joy depends only on money. Let them all seek, let them all grovel. But I myself think - I don't need it because Happiness stands at my door.

Scratching this out
Phonologists differentiate between broad and narrow transcriptions of things. And then there’s like, the archiphonemic level.
For example, you can analyze Mandarin as having a three vowel system* /a ə ɨ/ if you want (although there’s at least a secret fourth high vowel given splits in erhua for ɨ). Taken with the historical origins of the retroflex series and palatal series, you can end up with a system like:
Initials: p t k pʰ tʰ kʰ f s x m n l t͡s t͡sʰ Ø Medials: w j r wj Ø Nuclei: a ə ɨ (and maybe Ø) Codas: w j n ŋ Ø Tones: 1 2 3 4 Ø (as phonemes, not contours) With that you can generate basically every Mandarin syllable, except er, which could just be tacked on at the end anyways; that’s basically how it’s analyzed as the erhua. So if permit me not to write Ø when it’s implied, Article 1 of the UDHR in Mandarin could be: rən2rən2  srəŋ1 ɚ2 t͡sɨ4jəw2, t͡saj4 t͡sun1jan2 xə2 kʰwjan2lɨj4 sraŋ4 jɨ1lu4 pʰɨŋ2təŋ3. tʰa1mən fu4jəw3 lɨ3xjɨŋ4 xə2 ljaŋ2xjɨn, pɨŋ4 jɨŋ1 jɨ3 xjɨŋ1tɨ4 tə kjɨŋ1srən2 xu4xjaŋ1 twəj4taj4 It’s... not far from a broad transcription, which might look like
ɻɛ̌nɻɛ̌n ʂʊ́ŋ ɚ̌ t͡sɨ̂jǒʊ, t͡sâɪ t͡súnjɛ̌n xɤ̌ c͡ɕʰɥɛ̌nlî ʂâŋ ílû pʰíŋtɤ᷅ŋ. tʰámən fûjo᷅ʊ li᷅ɕîŋ xɤ̌ ljǎŋɕín, pîŋ íŋ i᷅ ɕʊ́ŋtɨ̂ tɤ c͡ɕíŋʂɤ̌n xûɕáŋ1twěɪtâɪ
I probably made transcription errors, but if the archiphoneme analysis is right, you shouldn’t see different rhymes for the posited vowels and their assimilation rules, e.g. ja > jɛ / _n
The narrow transcription would be the same as the broad, taking into effects of the how the speaker actually reads the sentence, the main difference between a very standard speaker’s narrow and broad transcriptions being the indication of sandhi ɻɛ̌nɻɛ̌n ʂʊ́ŋ ɚ̌ t͡sɨ̂jǒʊ, t͡sâɪ t͡súnjɛ̌n xɤ̌ c͡ɕʰɥɛ̌nlî ʂâŋ ílû pʰíŋtɤ᷅ŋ. tʰámən fûjôʊ li᷅ɕîŋ xɤ̌ ljǎŋɕín, pîŋ íŋ i᷅ ɕʊ́ŋtɨ̂ tɤ c͡ɕíŋʂɤ̌n xûɕáŋ1twěɪtâɪ In pinyin, that would be Rénrén shēng ér zìyóu, zài zūnyán hé quánlì shàng yīlù píngděng. Tāmen fùyǒu lǐxìng hé liángxīn, bìng yīng yǐ xiōngdì guānxì de jīngshén hùxiāng duìdài.
which selects for ease of typing, has tone marks that make sense, but basically follows the archiphoneme analysis for spelling vowels, except some realizations are inconsistently spelled out (jɨŋ, pronounced jʊŋ, is yong, but yan, pronounced jɛn, is yan) I’m not really familiar enough with Mandarin to give a good example of when a narrow transcription is useful. But with German, it’s clear in some ways.
Alle Menschen sind frei und gleich an Würde und Rechten geboren. Sie sind mit Vernunft und Gewissen begabt und sollen einander im Geist der Brüderlichkeit begegnen. Broad transcription /alə mɛnʃn zɪnt fʀaɪ ʊnt glaɪç an vyɐdə ʊnt ʀɛçtn gɛboʀn zi zɪnt mɪt feɐnunft ʊnt gɛvɪsn bɛgapt ʊnt zoln aɪnandeɐ im gəɪst deɐ bʀydeɐliçkait bɛgegnən/
A Westphalian friend of mine might say exactly [a.lə mɛn.ʃn̩ zɪntʰ fʀaɪ ʊn glaɪç an ‘vyɐ.də ʊn ‘ʀɛç.tn̩ gə’bo.ʁn̩ zi zɪntʰ mɪtʰ fɐ’nunftʰ ʊn gɪ’vɪ.sn bə’gapt ʊn ‘zo.ln̩ aɪ’nan.dɛɐ im gəɪstʰ deɐ bʀy.dɛɐ.liç,kʰaɪtʰ bɪ’geg.nn̩]
An Austrian friend [a.lɛ mɛn.ɕɛn zɪntʰ fʀaɪ ʊn glaɪç an ‘vʏɐ.dɛ ʊn ‘ʀɛç.tɛn gɛ’bo.ʁ̞n̩ zi zɪntʰ mɪtʰ fɐ’nʊnftʰ ʊn gɛ’vɪ.sɛn bɛ’gaptʰ ʊn ‘zo.lɛn aɪ’nan.dɐ im gaɪstʰ deɐ ‘bʀy.dɐ.liç,kʰaɪtʰ bɛ’geg.nɛn] People at the hobby level seem to confuse and narrow broad transcriptions, which are more important to what the phonologist is doing, with that kind of archiphonemic analysis, which might be more useful for the information processing level of historical linguistics than, honestly, really anything else I can think of.

I love Yiddish curses
They’re either weirdly specific and convoluted:
e.g. “Ale tseyn zoln bay im aroysfaln, not eyner zol im blaybn oyf tsonveytung.” -- “All his teeth should fall out, except one to give him a toothache.” Or surreal as hell: e.g. “A hiltsener tsung zol er bakumn.” -- “He should grow a wooden tongue.” Or occasionally just really straightforward and visceral: e.g. “Fransn zol esn zayn layb.” -- “His body should be consumed by venereal disease.”
