A Certain Magical Index: Rebirth Testament II - Plotline Arc Master Post

I was going to put all of the ones from Series 2 and the others going forward, but I felt like it would make this list too long. So I decided to just do Series 2 for now and do the others later.

Master Post: Arcs & Storylines

This is going to be a post concerning all of the content that is planned for the future on this blog. A Certain Magical Index: Rebirth Testament is a series with the main theme of discovery, discovery of the unknown, discovery of new concepts and certain characters and what they represent. As such, some arcs will be focused on certain characters, (It could be your muse, another muse of mine or both) learning more about Kamijou Touma and who he is as a person,as he is someone who tries to save as many people as possible. Some will be focused on the Magic Side being discovered by some, the same for the Science Side, and especially the Meta Side (The side that introduces alien worlds, persons or other assorted phenomena).

With this said, most of these will be plotted out, especially the more darker and serious storylines that will be detailed here today, while there are some that are exclusive to certain mutuals of mine, as their characters, elements and/or setting will be one of the main focuses.

A Certain Magical Index: Rebirth Testament II

The Shadow King Arc (In progress)

In this arc, it's about two weeks since the Holy Grail War ended and peace has returned to Academy City, however, a multi-universal ethereal entity called the Shadow King has set its sights on Earth, specifically, Academy City and has already taken control of several Espers including, Shokuhou Misaki: the #5 Level 5 Esper and the strongest Telepath. Touma and co. must stop this entity from initiating its plans of taking over the planet.

Agnese Hunting Arc (In progress)

Agnese Sanctis, along with Sister Angeline and Sister Lucia are being pursued by a pair of twins who bear a striking resemblance to the 1st Ranked Level 5. They seek shelter from Touma who agrees to help them flee Academy City after they were sent to investigate a being known as the God Hunter. When Touma finds out what's actually going on, who the God Hunter is and what the Church plans to do, can he help them reach a compromise before the real enemy makes their move? Pertains to @xbloodsoakedx.

Element Kingdom Arc

Touma suddenly finds himself in the city of Los Santos to see that it is much, much colder than it should be in the west cost of the United States. Not only that, but the entire population of Los Santos is missing as well. Touma, Your Muse are attacked by strange creatures who are controlled by the magician who is the lord of this space. Meeting up with Index, the group sets out to correct this anomaly and restore Los Santos back to its original state.

School Garden Arc

Because of the events with Agnese, Kamijou is unable to return to his dorm until it is repaired. As a result the board of directors are able to arrange a deal for Touma to stay in School Garden of all places, specifically Tokiwadai. Dreading what awaits him, he is unaware of the plot that MINUS plans to undertake in School Garden, specifically for the #5 Level 5, Shokuhou Misaki.

Precure Hunter Arc

The Clock Tower of the Magic Association has put out sealing designations on the members of the Happiness Charge Precure, and has sent their enforcers to capture them. A competition between Freelancers and Enforcers are underway as the girls become targets for Magicians looking for payment or notoriety, and Touma finds himself caught in the middle of it. Pertains to @rosecoloredmuses

Shirai Assist Arc

Following the events of the Precure Hunter Arc, Shirai Kuroko on behalf of Judgement starts to investigate the clues left behind from the conflict. Board Chairman of Academy City, Aleister Crowley feels that Kuroko, and others will learn of the existence of the Magic Side, so to that end, Aleister employs MINUS to have her assassinated to prevent her from learning too much. This will lead to a confrontation with Shirai and MINUS in the now abandoned Misawa Cram School Building. Will result in Touma getting severely injured.

Hamazura Recruitment Arc

MINUS, despite what happened in December, still seeks to have Hamazura Shiage to their side. To that end, MINUS attempts to blackmail him into joining them by threatening the safety of ITEM, specifically Takitsubo Rikou and the young Fremea Seivlun. Hamazura gives into their demands, at least from what it seems, only in reality, he plans to face off against those MINUS members by himself. Touma and (your muse) goes to the location to help him overcome the threat that is MINUS.

SISTERS REBIRTH Arc

A man in a suit manages to abduct Last Order, prompting Accelerator to go on a Manhunt for the assalant. Both he and Last Order are quickly found by Accelerator and Misaka Mikoto and Last Order is saved. However, the two Level 5s learn of a plot to restart the SISTERS Project, prompting Accelerator and Mikoto to take immediate action by destroying the labratories behind the plot. Later Misaka Imouto is kidnapped by a Researcher who is behind the plot and was once part of the original Project, prompting Touma to get involved, to save the Sisters. Includes new technology and Touma fighting a Researcher in a fist fight. Pertains to xbloodsoakedx and tetsuwan-atom

Dragon Slayer Arc

A defected Knight from the Roman catholic Church travels to Academy City with the intent to kill Touma, believing that by slaying him as the "Dragon", he will become a Saint and gain power. To combat this, Nessicarius and the Magic Association sends Kanzaki Kaori to protect him from this deranged magician. Will include the Invisible Thing manifesting following Touma's arm getting severed at some point.

Konori Justice Arc

Touma and Bowen are brought in by Yomikawa Aiho to help Judgement and Anti-Skill in a operation against some forces of MINUS in the tunnels of District 7. There is a lot of push back from this from Anti-Skill and Judgement, but circumstances force them to help, whether the peacekeeping forces want it or not. They end up working with Judgement member Konori Mii in order to help take down the MINUS forces in the tunnels after the three are separated from the rest of the force after a MINUS attack and cave in. Pertains to @tetsuwan-atom.

- God's One Throne Saga -

Unholy Inquisition Arc

The Fallen Roman Catholic Church finally decides to take action against the God Hunter and other enemies of God. Replacing God's Right Seat, a new organization called God's One Throne, led by Pope Mathias Benedictus decided to deploy the Neo-Inquisition to Academy City, with the sole purpose of eliminating Violet, Touma, and Bowen due to their respective natures. In response, Aleister once again plans to use Kazakiri Hyouka against the invading forces of the Church while the Magic Association plan to send enforcers to stop the Church. A new war between Magic and Science brews.

SS: Delta Force

A short story involving Touma and his friends Aogami Pierce and Tsuchimikado Motoharu getting into mischief involving swimsuits and changing room antics. Nothing serious here.

Book of Tyranus Arc

A grimoire called the Book of Tyranus was stolen from the British Museum by God's One Throne. The organization plans to use its contents in order to transform the Earth into a violent hellscape, thus destroying all of human civilization. The Magic Association requests the aid of Index, along with Touma as her manager and Bowen, as it is a grimore from the Meta Side and has the group with Miyuki, Othinus and Rosalia in tow head over to London. Chaos ensues moments after they land as the airport becomes a battle field between the forces of the Association, and the Church. Pertains to tetsuwan-atom.

Tower of London Arc

Gimelio The Understanding, after being defeated by the Association and Touma's group, is imprisoned within the Tower of London with the Church planning his rescue. Leivina Birdway is contacted by someone to prevent this from happening, and to that end she drags Touma and Co. along. Chaos ensues in the Tower of London as they not only have to deal with deranged prisoners, but Hei The Magnificent as well. Pertains to tetsuwan-atom.

The Flood Arc

With the first two days in London filled with nothing but chaos, Touma wants to enjoy his holiday to the fullest, but there is a complication: Lessar. Lessar from New Light mails herself to the Nessicarius women's dorm that Touma and crew are forced to stay (Since they are unable to return to japan because of the chaos from the Book of Tyranus arc) and tags along with them. However, the Fallen Roman Catholic Church declares the Magic Association to be enemies of God and another member of God's One Throne, VAVA The Gloriousmounts their attack on London. Chaos ensues when the water manipulating magician takes control of the Thames in the conflict.

Thor Challenge Arc

The Magician Thor wishes to fight Touma once more, to that end, he gets him involved in rescuing the 10% of missing child cases in England from the hands of God's One Throne, who continues to use them as disposable tools. Meanwhile, the Association and the Knights of England work together to find the hideout of the remaining members of God's One Throne in London and defeat them. More chaos ensues.

- MINUS Saga -

(Note: The MINUS saga runs concurrently along with the God's One Throne Saga after Delta Force SS and due to who it focuses on, it has more of s railgun feel and manga-like structure storywise. Meaning, they are longer in some cases)

Day 1.

After a phone conversation between Touma and the Railgang, Uiharu Kazari takes an interest in the boy, although is unable to properly remember his name and face because of how unremarkable it is. Meanwhile, Anti-Skill and Judgement conduct a joint operation against MINUS throughout the city. We learn that the Outsourcer for the Plan of Attack was a Pyschology expert by the name of Echidena Kihara Romefeller. The plan of attack results in tragety the side of Judgement and Uiharu seeks to uncover the identity of the Outsourcer, while at the same time conducting her own personal investigation into Kamijou Touma.

Day 2.

In her investigation into Touma, Uiharu asks her best friend Saten what he means to her. because of the timing of it, the question makes Saten very uncomfortable and is unable to anser due to having to go to school. Later, Uiharu continues her search for the escaped MINUS members, the identity of the Outsourcer, and more digging into Touma. Uiharu hacking into Touma's file results in her getting threatened by a sniper. She and Konori head over to Touma's school in order to gain information on a member of MINUS who used to go there. After this and more, Uiharu meets up with Saten again, the two argue for a bit regarding what happened earlier in the morning, but make up in the end. They meet up with Mikoto and Kuroko in order to question Touma in relation to his involvement in the Tower of LOndon Arc.

After this, the quartet head over to district 10 in order to face off against the remaining 232 members of MINUS who are hiding there. Anti-Skill and Judgement once again working together, only this time with Anti-Skill leading the charge. Yomikawa also brings in outside help in the form of Hamazura Shiage, Hattori Hanzou, Kuruwa, and Violent Violet. As this operation becomes a battlefeild for the hackers, (Uiharu and the MINUS hacker), the four volunteers are paired with the Railgang in order to protect Uiharu so she can hack into the machines and auromated weapons that MINUS has under their control.

After the conflict is over, the Railgang encounters Thor in Heaven Canceller's hospital to steal some drugs he plans to use on Touma as it ties into the Thor Arc.

Day 3.

The war against MINUS continues as the organization makes their next move to recover their captured member from Anti-Skill and Judgement. Interogations will happen featuring the appearance of Shokuhou Misaki and Kumokawa Seria, and a disturbing revelation is discovered that could potentially put Academy City and Tokyo in danger. Anti-Skill and Judgement move to stop this plot along with the help of a newly reformed GROUP?!

Day 4.

MINUS is on its last legs with most of its members in custody. Uiharu finds herself on a bus with a bomb that is about to blow up and she has to figure out how to stop it. Kamijou Touma finally returns home after his escapades in London, but as expected, it may not be a peaceful return.

Foul Resurrection Arc

After the incidents with MINUS and God's One Throne, Touma tries to enjoy his return to Academy City, but all of that is thrown out the window when he and Index are suddenly attacked by a strange serpent creature. Later, they encounter a woman in blue and find out that the serpent has been going around killing people. Wanting to stop this, Touma gets caught up in a dark plot involving the return of a certain old foe of Accelerator and Violent Violet. Pertains to xbloodsoakedx.

Hashmal Ascension Arc

Touma encounters a girl with silver hair and blue eyes who follows him around for some reason. Little does he know that this girl is somehow connected to the Pope and God's One Throne. A new conflict between Magic and Science continues.

The Great Magician War Arc (Final)

Following God's One Throne and the Pope's attack on Academy City, Inori Bendictus is taken away to Vatican City in order to enact his plans of using her power to bring forth the Promised Land --- which will result in the eradication of the human race. In the mist of all of this, the Vatican declares war on Academy City, the Magic Association, and the rest of humanity, branding them all as heretical. The final battle with the Grand Roman catholic Church commences as the forces of Magic the forces of Science, and the forces of the Kamijou Faction, all move forward to stop the Pope and save one girl.

Manga the Week of 3/3/21

SEAN: March comes in like a lion with a pile of new manga, though sadly none of them are March Comes in Like a Lion. Get on that, Viz.

MICHELLE: Seriously!

ASH: Right??

SEAN: Airship debuts a new light novel with Drugstore in Another World: The Slow Life of a Cheat Pharmacist (Cheat Kusushi no Slow Life ~ Isekai ni Tsukurou Drugstore ~). It’s getting an anime in the summer, and gets an early digital release next week. Our hero reincarnates in a fantasy world with a potion maker ability, and treats various folks, including a werewolf girl who falls for him.

ASH: I’m largely isekai-ed out, but this variation intrigues me.

SEAN: Ghost Ship, meanwhile, has the 5th and final volume of Saki the Succubus Hungers Tonight.

J-Novel Club has a lot of new print titles. The debut is Seirei Gensouki: Spirit Chronicles, which is coming out as 2-volume omnibuses.

Also in print: An Archdemon’s Dilemma 10, I Shall Survive Using Potions! 4, Infinite Dendrogram 11, and Marginal Operation 5.

On the digital side we get Altina the Sword Princess 7, the 5th manga volume of Demon Lord, Retry!, How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom 13, I Shall Survive Using Potions! 6, Marginal Operation 6, and the 3rd manga volume for The Unwanted Undead Adventurer.

In print, Kodansha Comics has Hitorijima My Hero 9 and Wave, Listen to Me! 5.

MICHELLE: I enjoy both of these for utterly different reasons.

ANNA: I’m so behind on Wave, Listen to Me!

ASH: I’m looking forward to catching up, myself!

SEAN: The digital debut is Araki Won’t Be Tamed (Araki-kun wa Kai Narasenai), a Dessert title about a young woman whose older sister is a famous actress. Now a famous actor declares his love for her… no, not her sister, her! She doesn’t buy this, but he’ll do anything to convince her… even be her pet. YMMV was invented for series like these.

MICHELLE: Yeeeeah.

ANNA: LOLOL

ASH: We shall see!

SEAN: All-Rounder Meguru comes to an end with its 19th volume. There’s also The Invincible Reincarnated Ponkotsu 4, My Dearest Self with Malice Aforethought 2, My Sweet Girl 12, Smile Down the Runway 18, and the 4th and final volume of Star⇄Crossed!!.

MICHELLE: At some point I should check back in with My Sweet Girl and see how it’s going.

SEAN: Seven Seas debuts the Berserk of Gluttony manga, based on the light novel. The story of a boy who gains people’s skills when he kills them, it runs in Comic Ride.

There’s also the 3rd and final Who Says Warriors Can’t Be Babes?.

Digitally, Seven Seas has the first four volumes of Alice in the Country of Clover: Cheshire Cat Waltz, which features Boris, and was one of the better series of the endless spinoffs.

ASH: I really liked this particular spinoff.

Viz has, as usual for the first week of the month, a lot of stuff. The first debut is a spinoff, Dr. Stone Reboot: Byakuya. Not an actual reboot but a prequel to the main series, showing us what actually happened with Senku’s father.

The second debut is also a spinoff, My Hero Academia: Team Up Missions. It runs in Saikyou Jump, a magazine devoted to spinoffs of Jump titles, and features the cast of Class 1-A teaming up with various pro heroes.

MICHELLE: I will read this, but I’d be ridiculously excited if this was Class 1-B doing the teaming up!

SEAN: And we also get: Daytime Shooting Star 11, Dragon Ball Super 12, Haikyuu!! 43, Love Me, Love Me Not 7, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes 9, Naruto: Shikamaru’s Story (yes, I know, it got bumped), Oresama Teacher 28, Queen’s Quality 11, Skip Beat! 45, Snow White with the Red Hair 12, Spy x Family 4, and Twin Star Exorcists 21. I’m getting over half that list.

MICHELLE: Big same. I’m, of course, especially excited for a new volume of Skip Beat!.

ANNA: Tons of good stuff, I agree any week with Skip Beat! is a good week.

ASH: I agree – a really good Viz week!

SEAN: A lot of Yen’s February light novels got bumped to this week, making them March light novels. We get Banished from the Hero’s Party, I Decided to Love a Quiet Life in the Countryside 2, A Certain Magical Index SS 2, Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody 13, Re: Zero 15 (which ends the 4th arc), A Sister’s All You Need 9, and Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online 8.

On the Yen Press side, there’s two debuts. Do You Like the Nerdy Nurse? (Hokenshitsu no Otaku Onee-san wa Suki Desu ka?), a seinen title from Shogakukan’s Yawaraka Spirits. The school nurse is gorgeous… but also a massive otaku, as one student finds out. Can he get her to fall in love with non-fictional people? This is a done-in-one omnibus.

Yen also has the manga adaptation of the Solo Leveling novel.

Lastly, there’s the 2nd volume of Sword Art Online’s manga adaptation of Project: Alicization.

Chapter 7

“That lightness that you are feeling in your body is actually mana.”

“No wonder I feel so light Sensei.”

Sebastian was training Naell. They were both standing meters away from each other in the middle of the Grassy plains. The location they were training in, was the same place where he had awakened.

It was the perfect place to train since average villagers would avoid it. After all, it had the tendency to have some roaming monsters. Of course, it was heavily guarded by Baron Fharom’s guards, but still, for a normal person, it was a scary place to be in.

Naell was still a tad anxious as he thought,

‘I wonder--- what is this heavy feeling?’

It only lasted for a couple of seconds as Naell was too fond of his training. He was actually releasing and inserting mana from his body. He was trying to do a mana shield that all mages usually learn first as mentioned in the novel.

To form a mana shield, a mage needs to release his/her mana while coating their body and surroundings with it.

Sebastian, while continuing his lecture about the fundamentals of magic and mana, placed his right palm to his chest while his left index pointed to his temple.

“A martial artist’s aura strength not only comes from the amount they have but also from their will which is directly from their heart; while us mages will come from our mastery in controlling and forming mana--- but above all, from our imagination.”

He then added on while observing Naell’s white mana.

“Although the color of one’s mana truly describes the strength of a mage, without mastery and imagination, it amounts to nothing.”

Naell of course was startled at first when Sebastian told him that his mana was white like his mother’s, though he quickly forgot about it due to his excitement in learning magic.

Naell was nodding and in the process was actually able to succeed on his first try. A clear circular barrier had formed around him. Sebastian was then looking towards him with a complicated look.

“This--- you are able to form a perfect mana shield on your first try...”

Sebastian, with a flick of his hand, immediately sent multiple offensive magic towards Naell. He was surprised at how sturdy the young mage’s shield was.

Naell tilted his head with a questioning gaze of ”what?" directed to his Sensei. He was having too much fun to even use common sense at that moment.

“HO...Ho...ho” Sebastian could only laugh dryly at Naell’s response.

“AHEM... For this month, you’ll practice your mana shield until you can maintain its form even whilst you are doing other things.” Sebastian knew that releasing and inserting mana required an amount of time to master, so he thought one week would do. Yet when Naell immediately formed a barrier with mana, he could only advance the lesson.

‘4 months... It really is possible--- Nay 4 months is too long.’ Sebastian was thinking of the entrance exam at the capital. The mage applicant would be required to undergo a series of examinations to assess their capability to uphold the school’s standards.

Naell nodded to respond while pondering if he could fly.

“Understood, Sensei. I was hoping I could learn elemental magic today.”

Naell then focused his mana to his feet, but was quite disappointed when he could only levitate.

In the novel, flight magic was possible but only to a certain degree. They could only levitate or fly a few meters above the ground. Of course, there were exceptions such as the direct descendants of The Legendary Animal, Pegasus; the winged beast tribe, the mighty dragon race, and several other races.

Sebastian’s jaw dropped when he saw Naell levitating. Regardless, he managed to speak calmly despite being astonished from the start.

“...Give yourself 1 week then--- Only then will I test your elemental magic.”

Naell nodded to respond. He levitated while sitting cross-legged in the air as he rotated 360 degrees vertically.

Sebastian could only sigh while looking at the levitating young mage, whose appearance and attitude reminded him of his late cheeky student.

“Just maintain your levitation and mana shield for as long as you can, Naell. Even in the capital, that is how they train mages.”

Hours went by as their training consisted of mana control. Sebastian tested the sturdiness of Naell’s shield by attacking it every so often.

All of a sudden, Sebastian clapped both of his hands once as he remembered something important.

“Remember Naell, mages can only replenish their mana from the spirit of the world so if we lose control of our mana then we are as good as dead.”

Naell after some pondering decided to ask while maintaining his mana shield and levitation--- still in a cross-legged sitting position. He could now feel the stress that was toiling in his body.

“By the way, Sensei.”

As to reply, Sebastian smiled and approached him.

“Hmmm?”

“I saw some books regarding you and my parents. Why are you called FORTRESS anyway?” Naell obviously knew nothing about things that were not in the storyline. However, because of the books that he read in the library, he learned a couple of interesting things.

“Hohoho” Sebastian could only laugh as he remembered the past. It was a painful memory full of hardship. The War of the Continent started when the Southern Kingdom fell into the hands of a terrorist group called the Illuminati.

That group was headed by Duke Leonard Cross, a northern noble who wanted to rule the whole continent. That person was also known as the [JACK of All Blades], an honorary SS-rank adventurer that could wield multiple blades at his bidding.

Leonard Cross murdered the King of the Southern Kingdom who at that time, visited the Northern Continent. He failed to assassinate the Northern King who fled to the Western kingdom and asked for aid.

Leonard Cross then manipulated what had happened and accused the Northern King of killing the Southern King. The Eastern Kingdom who had deep blood ties with the deceased King, attacked the Western border demanding the head of the accused.

“Other kingdoms of different races got involved in the conflict, hence started the War of the Continent. The war lasted for 5 years until the whole continent united to defeat the Illuminati whose schemes had been exposed by the Southern Kingdom’s surviving prince--- now the King of the South.” Sebastian continued talking. He was smiling with a hint of sadness in his face.

“I was stationed in the Western Kingdom’s Northern border where I used my elemental magic for defense rather than offense--- hence the nickname, [Fortress].″

Sebastian then saw the fatigued look of his student who was by then breathing heavier than usual.

“Naell, It’s better to rest and not overexert yourself.”

Naell then after deactivating his magic, plopped down while looking paler from the exhaustion of using mana for hours.

“So, why Fortress?”

“Hohoho, I’ll tell you after we test your elemental magic.”

Sebastian actually had a vague idea of Naell’s elemental magic, but it was better to wait for a week to test it.

‘Naell needs to get used to mana control and magic form even if his progress is fast. Besides, I need to wait for the device to test his elemental magic.’

Naell could only smile and nod as he was too exhausted to exert any more effort.

They decided to rest for a while before heading back to the mansion.

1 month went by in a blink of an eye. The training smoothly progressed as Naell could even use mana detection magic, a spell that uses mana to detect life forms, aura, and the surrounding mana.

Mana detection can vary depending on a mage’s capabilities in magic. A person with either stronger mana or aura can prevent themselves from being sensed through this magic.

Of course, high ranking mages like Sebastian Claus, the former captain of the WCF possessing yellow mana, can detect better and far wider than new mages. What more, named wizards and witches can go as far as differentiating the nature of a person’s mana and aura, and the strong from the weak.

Within their world, those who exceed the limit of one’s normal growth were given titles to their name; with relation to a deck of cards for martial artists like thelate [JACK of all blades], Leonard Cross; and [WIZARD] and [WITCH] for mages. Animals and monsters on the other hand, upon reaching their limit will name themselves, such as the legendary beast, [PEGASUS].

Naell decided to ask his Sensei to delay his elemental magic capability test. He had experienced how much he lacked stamina when it came to using mana.

Sebastian couldn’t agree more since the basic foundation was crucial for a new mage. Although, he could not help but slightly anticipate Naell’s future as his growth could exponentially be on par or slightly better than the named [Witch of Winter].

Sebastian and Naell were currently seated facing each other in the Grassy plains. They decided to continue the previous discussion they had about his title of [Fortress] and elemental magic.

“Your mother was taking her on-the-job training in my garrison up the northern border where I first met her. She was already a famous B-class adventurer that possessed both white mana and the elemental magic of wind and water. Just like me.” As Sebastian spoke, his yellow mana turned into a combination of passing wind that circled around a ball of clear water in his right open palm. He then added,

“But your mom’s elemental magic was stronger than mine, let alone anyone I have met. She was really having a hard time controlling the strength of her magic. That is why when she saw me, she just barged in on me and asked me to be her master. Hohoho, that was quite an experience.”

Naell chuckled. He could imagine Alicia being a cheeky kid.

“Looks like my mom was quite the hassle.”

“Hohoho, she sure was.”

With a snap of his fingers, Sebastian then [ poofed ] a ball that landed on the grassy ground. The ball appeared to be what fortune-tellers on earth commonly used; a crystal ball. Seeing that, Naell tilted his head in confusion. Sebastian chuckled.

“Hohoho, this will be the instrument that will determine your elemental magic. Although I have an idea since I somewhat sense it within you, but it is still better to use this... So listen, and watch carefully.” Sebastian then placed his right palm on the ball while emitting his yellow mana. After seconds, a blue deep sea like orb was covering almost the entirety of the ball, while a hue of grayish transparent like air occupied a small amount in the ball.

“As you see here, I have an affinity for water and wind. Fire is red, earth has the colors of nature, while the light and darkness is literally their respective colors.”

Naell was mesmerized. Even though he did have some sort of idea since the book, Arts and Magic described how to test one’s mana and aura, it was still his first time seeing it upfront.

Without waiting for Naell’s reply, Sebastian added on,

“As you can see, my wind affinity is mediocre at best, while my water is slightly stronger. This actually helped me develop a special element that even your mom had a hard time learning, Hohoho.” As he said that, Sebastian flicked his left hand. Strands of mana then flowed into the air before scattering and dropping onto the ground. The ground then slowly formed a pure white miniature castle.

Naell then stood up and approached the white castle that upon closer look, resembled fortified barracks rather than a castle.

“Sensei... This is snow.”

Sebastian leisurely followed suit and laughed heartily while picking the ball up.

“Hohoho, yes. I can never do ice magic since my wind magical affinity is lacking, but because of my mastery in the control of mana and the forming of magic, I was able to make snow.”

That was why when Alicia, who had a hard time controlling her mana and could not form her ice magic at that time, saw Sebastian’s control of mana, she nagged at him to teach her his secret.

Mages that have two elemental affinities were rare, especially in the case where both elements were equal. But there were rarer cases wherein a mage was born with three or more elemental affinities.

“So to answer your question, I am called “Fortress" because of my ability to defend with the use of my elemental magic. The combination of my water and my weak wind enabled me to make the sturdiest snow.”

Sebastian and Naell once again sat down. He placed the ball on the Grassy plains near the miniature snow castle.

“Do you have any more questions?”

Naell gleefully replied,

“No Sensei.”

Sebastian then gestured towards the glass ball.

“Hohoho, then let us start.”

A Certain Magical Index SS, Vol. 2

By Kazumi Kamachi and Kiyotaka Haimura. Released in Japan as “To Aru Majutsu no Index” by Dengeki Bunko. Released in North America by Yen On. Translated by Andrew Prowse.

And so, once again, we have the “final” volume of Index in North America. Last time we thought it was the 22nd volume, then Yen picked up the two short story volumes after the fact. Now, we even get a translator’s afterword by Andrew Prowse thanking the readers, saying this is it for now, and please keep reading the manga. All it needs is “And the adventure continues…” after the final page. In other words, don’t expect New Testament unless there’s an anime. As for this volume, it’s far more of a short story book than the first one, though the stories eventually do tie together up to a certain point. It’s also a lot goofier, with Kamachi’s usual hit-and-miss attempts at humor and lots of powerful teenagers doing dumb teenage things. There’s ninjas, hackers, slashers, fixers, and those who fight using only their GUTS! That said, it’s a reasonable amount of fun, and Index fans should have no reason not to pick it up, especially since good sales might also change Yen’s mind.

Introduced in this volume: Balbina, Gunha Sogiita, Tabigake Misaka, Ollerus, Silvia, Kuruwa, Seria Kumokawa, Stephanie Gorgeouspalace, Misaka 17000, Misaka 18022, Misaka 14333, Misaka 15110, Misaka 10090, Misaka 12053, Misaka 19009, Misaka 11899, Misaka 16836, Misaka 10501, Misaka 19900, Misaka 12083, Misaka 10855, Misaka 17203, Misaka 19488, Misaka 15327, Misaka 13072, Misaka 17403, Misaka 10050, Misaka 10840, Misaka 12481, Misaka 18072, Misaka 19348, Misaka 17009, Misaka 15113, Misaka 14014, and Misaka 18829. (Sorry, I had to.) This takes place over the course of the entire series, and even prior to it, but in Japan it was released between Vol. 16 and 17. As you can see by the list above, leaving out the Misakas, there’s a lot of major characters who make their debut here (including some we’ve seen “debut” in English in Books 19-22, or the Railgun manga). That said, three make the most impact: Gunha, a Level 5 who gets by by essentially having Shonen Champion power (I’d say Jump, but if you look at him he’s clearly more an Akita Shoten boy); Ollerus, a somewhat distracted young man who also proves to be the most powerful person in the book; and Seria Kumokawa, a 3rd year at Touma’s school who also appears to be one of those powers behind the throne sorts.

There are some definite high points here. Uiharu gets two stories showing off her masterful computer skills, though the end of the second one implies she is fine with destroying data to avoid letting the hackers win. We meet Mikoto’s dad, and he’s pretty much exactly as you’d expect, being the sort of man who can casually threaten to bring down Crowley should he so choose. Touma and Index are absent from the book, and Mikoto’s only in one story, so this is definitely focused on the minor characters. The main “plot” involved a group of 50 “uncut gems”, who seems to be kids with powers that are unaffiliated with a country, and everyone trying to find and control/kill/do whatever with them. The best scene in the whole book occurs when Seria decides to have all these “gems” retrieved by Misaka clones, leading to an action scene we only here about via the Misaka Network, equal parts badass and funny.

It’s not a long book, and as a final volume of Index the 22nd book works better, but I’m pleased Yen went back and picked up these two books. Who knows, if Japan can get over the disaster that was the third Index anime and do more, we may see New Testament someday. Till then, don’t get your jeans slashed, don’t get into a hacking battle with Uiharu, and don’t piss off Academy City so much you get yourself super killed.
