Stitched (Volume One), Mariah McCourt & Aaron Alexovitch (three stars)
I received an advance review copy of this book.
My favourite thing about this book is the character designs, which were adorable. Every character has distinct features and a unique silhouette while still feeling like part of a cohesive whole.
However, I feel like there were too many characters introduced too quickly. If a major part of this series' focus is going to be on romance (which this volume certainly hints at), I think I would have prefered if the first volume spent a little more time on emotional development with a smaller core cast, opening the world up in later books.
This book has beautiful, unique page layouts. Sometimes they can be distracting-- it's not really a break from convention if there are never any "standard" rectangular panels to break away from-- but when the layouts are serving the narrative they can be extremely effective.

Comic Review - Mister Jinx
Tumblr media
Technically, the title of the book is Mister Jinx’s Halloween Hootenanny Special. A wonderfully halloween comic perfect for today! The events of the book take place on Devil’s Night, the night before Halloween (Does anyone else call it that? Kids used to pull pranks on Devil’s Night...) but the feel is still perfectly spooktacular!  The comic follows Mister Jinx, the Devil’s pet cat as he wanders about on Devil’s Night through the years and leaves a trail of destruction in his wake. He’s not just a random agent of chaos, though. He only tricks those who have done awful deeds, such as murder, kidnapping, poaching, or hating cats. And those that are kind to him and keep in the Halloween spirit? He grants candy. And revenge. Like a Halloween Santa Clause.  The art is by Drew Rausch, the fantastic hand behind My Blacks Don’t Match, Eldritch!, and Edward Scissorhands. His energetic linework and heavy inks work fantastically with the orange wash. The art has a classic cartoon feeling to it, something that seems really popular as of late. Stories are written by Mr. Rausch as well as Jocelyn Gajeway, Aaron Alexovitch, Rikki Simons, Laura Graves, and more! With a mix of comics behind the names - Heart Shaped Skull, Witched Get Stitches, Shutterbox... - it’s no surprise that the writing is going to be good. Overall the stories are simple and holiday related. It’s just a good romp about Halloween. Short, sweet, and a little spooky. Mr. Jinx might pull tricks, but his comic is a real treat!

Heart Shaped Skull
I don't think I've properly told anyone about this webcomic. I've mentioned it. It's time I fixed that. This comic, Heart Shaped Skull, is beyond amazing. It's delightfully gothic. The characters are both deranged and relatable at the same time. It's dripping with great humor and a delightfully gothic theme. It holds great messages. I've honestly spoiled myself. If anyone wants a good read, this is one of the tops comics I would suggest.

Aaron Alexovitch's third installment of Serenity Rose called "Break Your Stupid Heart", being released painfully, page by page as a webcomic. Cry about it with me! (Seriously, this shit is the shit).

10 years after Minx, here comes Charmz, a new comics line aimed at tween girls
Ah, Minx. So many memories and feelings. The very first, so ahead of its time modern graphic novel line aimed at tweenage and teen girls was launched ten years ago, on May 2, 2007. And on May 2, 2017, Papercutz will launch Charmz– a new graphic novel imprint for tween girls. The line is edited by Mariah Huehner, herself one of the Charmz launch creators, and a veteran of Minx and what worked and…
