SGGShowdown PRELIMINARY: DC (+ additional questions/specifications!)
Tumblr media
Abigail "Abby" Arcane | Swamp Thing (2019 Television Series) VS Felicity Smoak | Arrow (2012 Television Series) VS Lena Luthor | Supergirl (2015 Television Series) VS Barbara Gordon/Batgirl | Unspecified VS Karen Beecher/Bumblebee | Unspecified VS Natasha Irons/Steel | Unspecified VS Harlivy/Harley Quinn + Poison Ivy/Harleen Quinzel + Pamela Isley | Unspecified
Finally started working on the bracket, but realized that there's quite a few characters from the DC extended universe! Due to the nature of this fandom, I feel as though it'd be fair to fudge the numbers a bit for the fandom cap, so I'll be allowing four participants from DC into the bracket! Even with the increased cap, there's still a couple excess girls! While I could take the easy out and axe the girls who didn't have any sort of iteration specified, I feel as though that'd be rather unfair, so! It's preliminary time!
I condensed Harlivy into a pair due to the number of submissions I received for them, both individually and as a couple! Though there wasn't ever a consensus on which continuity to take them from. Since I would like to focus on a singular iteration of an SGG, I'd like to request those more familiar with these characters to suggest an iteration to take Batgirl, Bumblebee, Steel, and Harlivy from in the replies or in my askbox!

Batch Update: Giganta, Abby Arcane, and Metamorpho (again)
I actually have a bunch written up for all three, but I got caught in a web of describing everyone’s weird interpersonal relationships and it was getting real long bc all of these people’s dating lives are insane
Anyway, I backtracked on Rex again and it’s a little hard to see on the belt, but he actually is on The Terrifics still, which I’m going for more of a Future Foundation instead of strictly F4.
Abby Arcane’s Avatar of Rot is just the “Black Queen” in canon (thanks Scott) so I wanted something a little punchier and went with “The Rotted Thing” instead. I also added a bit where Abby meets Alec before his death and they have an affair while both still involved with others partners, Matt and Linda, respectively. Linda’s actually super interesting because she gets fridged (later retconned to be along with Alec, obvs) in Swamp Thing’s origin and her whole character arc takes place in the afterlife, but she also went to school with Ivy bc ofc, and...idk, any other Linda Hollands out there, she lives in this AU and more on that later. Anyway, Abby eventually gets her own Avatar form from the Parliament of Decay, which is a less always chaotic evil force and more of an actual counterpart to the other parliaments.
Finally Giganta and a peek at Hermes. I mentioned earlier this was the rough draft version, so I’m still working out aspects, but I wanted to tie Doris to both Gorilla City and Themyscira. Which is great, bc you may have noticed really like combining powersets from different versions of the same character, you should see what I did to Piotr Rasputin in my Marvel AU, and I feel like Doris (Zuel being a mononym when she was a Gorilla City researcher and Doris being her chosen human name) is smart enough to both switch species and then discover size-changing. Also she’s specifically an Amazon instead of just a super-strong human, so she’s got a lot of the mystical capabilities of Amazons that get glossed over in favor of action scenes of vaguely Greco-Roman statuesque babes (thanks Zack).
Hermes is just the to complete the femcel!Knuckles joke by being her Sonic until I pick a better counterpart (maybe Jesse Quick?)

April 1986. Long ago, back in the prehistoric days when you could still potentially buy both a new comic book and a candy bar for a single U.S. dollar, DC had a protracted flirtation with digest-sized comics, obviously intended to capture some of the supermarket checkout rack space normally dominated by Archie Comics. With very few exceptions, they were all-reprint, with a diverse array of material ranging from Golden Age reprints to '70s horror comics to recent DC highlights. This issue, #71 of the BEST OF DC BLUE RIBBON DIGEST line (which was only a "series" in a very technical sense), was one of the last, if not the last, of this eight-year experiment, and it sort of highlights why it became unworkable.
Let's suppose that you're a kid in early 1986, and while in line at the grocery store, you persuade your parental figure to buy you this comics digest. If they could spare the $1.50 plus tax, there was no obvious reason to object — it's a comic with a silly cartoon character on the cover and seems to have some Superman and Batman stuff, no big deal. What it contains, however, is a very peculiar assortment of recent material, including, inter alia:
"The Day the Earth Died" from SUPERMAN #408 (Paul Kupperberg/Ed Hannigan/Curt Swan/Al Williamson), a story about Superman's nuclear anxiety that begins with a rather harrowing dream sequence where Superman sees Metropolis destroyed by nuclear attack, leaving him the only survivor.
"Mogo Doesn't Socialize" from GREEN LANTERN #188, the now famous Alan Moore/Dave Gibbons short that introduced Mogo, the Green Lantern who's a planet.
Three ridiculous Keith Giffen stories: Blue Devil fighting the Trickster (from BLUE DEVIL #8); Ambush Bug trying to hassle Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman into guest-starring in his new miniseries (from ACTION COMICS #565); and a short in which the Atari Force's alien pet Hukka is terrorized by a robotic toy (from ATARI FORCE #20).
A tongue-in-check Batman adventure from BATMAN #383 (Doug Moench/Gene Colan/Bob Smith) in which our hero, in both his identities, desperately tries and repeatedly fails to get some sleep.
A solo story for Katana from BATMAN AND THE OUTSIDERS (Mike W. Barr/Jerome K. Moore) in which Tatsu murders some guys and recovers a stolen Japanese artifact with no dialogue or sound effects other than running radio commentary on a baseball game.
The well-known Alan Moore Swamp Thing story ("Rites of Spring," from SWAMP THING #34, drawn by Stephen Bissette and John Totleben) where Abigail Arcane and the Swamp Thing get very high on one of his psychedelic tubers and Abby gets her monsterfucker card punched, which editor Barbara Randall said had to be carefully recut not for content, but to get it to fit the page format.
This was a reasonably representative sampling of DC's 1985 output, but it's a weird lineup that's all over the place in tone and content. I have no idea what a hypothetical kid would have made of "Rites of Spring" upon encountering it in this format (by the time I happened upon my copy of this digest years later — for 50 cents — I'd already read it in TPB), but it would have been apparent that we were not in Riverdale anymore.
One nice thing about the digest series is that they often had some thoughtfully selected material; the themed issues are worthwhile, chosen with care even if the size and quality of reproduction were far from ideal. DC has occasionally put out conceptually similar packages, but not on a regular basis, usually in something more like regular comic book dimensions (the Walmart specials, for instance), not on a regular basis, and not on supermarket checkout racks.

Swamp Thing anon again. Got a clip on my recommended about the Harley Quinn show introducing Tefe. Looked at the comments. “The mother is someone named Abigail Arcane.” Transphobia. “Abby is an avatar of the Blue.” “If I recall correctly Constantine was Pissed about what happened.” Mysogyny. Transphobia again. OP is surprised Swamp Thing has a daughter. Basically I need DC to give me back my Abby content and also for people to read John’s issue because he literally went “I would have offered— oh god they’re STILL at it???” Come on now. Only fun take is “John had Nergal’s blood at the time so technically Tefe has THREE dads”
See that’s why I can’t stomach adaptations bc the amount of disinformation makes my eye twitch. Especially anything with swamp thing, Hellblazer or BOM. I can’t watch Keanu reeves Constantine bc I want to reach into the scream and shout MY MAN WOULDNT SAY THAT!!!!!!!!! DC fans are so fucking weird bc they just don’t know basic facts. And then these shows don’t help bc ppl assume they’re canon. I’m literally still beating off the YJ “Zatanna is a teenager” allegations with a baseball bat

Fan Reference Project: Masterpost
A masterpost of all the drawings I make for this project!
But what is this project?
This Fan References project is my goal to draw every (or nearly every) character from various fandoms. For some fandoms, I also plan to draw specific species if they're unique enough from irl creatures. The plan is to create a simple reference for each character consisting of at least one fullbody and flatcolor sketch, a color palette, and the character's name and the media they're from. These references will be posted daily. If you'd like to scroll through them all, every drawing will be posted under the tag wip: fan references and I will update this post as I go.
Included Characters
You can find a list of all the characters and creatures on this spreadsheet. Characters in white cells have already been drawn, though it's likely that if they are not linked here, then I have simply not posted them yet. I'm very willing to take suggestions, however, I make no guarantee of getting to it quickly/there's a chance it could take a long time for me to get to that character.
How will it work? What is the point?
Every day from January 1 (unless I specifically post that I am going on hiatus) I will be posting one of these references. At some point, I might increase the number of characters posted each day. I will be drawing these characters alphabetically, and they will be posted alphabetically. I will also be numbering each character in their post, both for the fun of seeing just how many characters there are and for organizational purposes. I wanted to do this for two reasons. The first is because I feel it would be good practice in drawing characters that aren't mine. I always feel like when I draw fanart based purely on grabbed images from media, there's always something off. Hopefully with a reference in my own style, it becomes easier to draw these characters. The other is so that I have my own clear reference for these characters, with an established color palette, so that I can draw the characters consistently.
Other Notes
This post could act as a notification post. At this moment (12/21) I'm unsure if people would want that. Just let me know if that would be a good idea, and I can post in the replies with a changelog of sorts once a week with which characters have been posted. All timelapses of these drawings are posted on my Instagram (@/ambersky0319) - at the moment (01/08) I don't intend to post them here.
Character Links
Below the cut is the actual masterpost portion with all the links. Unlike the posts themselves, which are posted alphabetically regardless of fandom, below the characters are organized by fandom. The fandoms are organized by character count, the fandoms with fewer characters first for the sake of scrolling.
