                         Tribal Marks: The African Tattoo

Tribal marks, also known as scarification, is a traditional practice that has been used by various ethnic groups in Africa for centuries. It involves cutting or scarring the skin in a specific pattern or design, usually on the face, and is typically done during childhood or adolescence.

The marks are used to identify a person's tribe or ethnic group, and can also serve as a form of beauty or adornment.

The tradition of tribal marks varies among different ethnic groups and regions in Africa. In Nigeria for instance, it's mostly practiced by ethnic groups such as the Yoruba, Igbo, and Efik. Each ethnic group has its own unique designs and patterns, and the marks can have different meanings or symbolic significance.

Among the Efik, the marks are used as a symbol of beauty, and young girls would be scarred with intricate designs as part of their initiation into womanhood.

The tradition of tribal marks has been on the decline in recent years, as many people opt for other forms of self-expression or choose not to have them at all.

Some people have abandoned the tradition because of the stigma associated with the marks and discrimination that is faced by those who have them.

Additionally, the government of Nigeria banned the practice in the late 1970s, although enforcement of the ban has been lax and it's still being practiced by some communities.

It's worth noting that the tradition of scarification is not limited to Africa, and has been practiced in other parts of the world, including Oceania, Asia, and the Americas.

Mr Akeem is royal-born, so he has long stripes on his face.

"It is like a football jersey," he quips, adding that they made him popular in the local market.

On a serious note, Mr Akeem says he regards the scars as sacred, and does not believe people should mark their faces just for beautification.

This need for identification through facial marks was also strong in northern Nigeria, especially among the Gobir people of Sokoto state.

Ibrahim Makkuwana's ancestors, pastoralists from Gubur in present-day Sokoto, did not have facial marks. But, he said, as they moved around looking for farming land, "they fought many battles and conquered many places".

They then decided to make distinctive marks on their cheeks, "akin to the ones their animals had, which would help them in identifying their kinsmen during battles", Mr Makkuwana says.

"That was the origin of our marks," he tells the BBC.

But there is also a distinction between the Gobirawas.

Those with six scars on one cheek and seven on the other have both parents from royalty. Those with six marks on both sides have only their mothers from the royal family.

Then there are the children of butchers, with nine scars on one side and 11 on the other, while those with five and six marks on either side trace their lineage to hunters.

As for fishermen, they have distinct marks drawn up to their ears.

Meanwhile, among the Yorubas and Igbos of southern Nigeria, some marks are linked to life and death.

There was a belief in their communities that some children were destined to die before puberty.

Known as Abiku and Ogbanje respectively by the two ethnic groups, these children were believed, by the Yoruba, to belong to a coven of demons living in large iroko and baobab trees.

It was common for women to lose several children at a young age in succession, and it was thought it was the same child, reappearing again and again to torment their mother.

Such children were then marked to make them unrecognisable to their spirit mates so they would stay alive.

Many of these infant deaths are now known to be caused by sickle cell anaemia, an inherited disorder common among African people.

Yakub Lawal in Ibadan in south-western Oyo state, was marked as an Abiku.

"This is not my first sojourn to earth, I have been here before," he says.

"I died thrice, and on my fourth return I was given these marks to stop me from returning to the spirit world," he adds.

Closely related to stories of the Abiku and Ogbanje are those whose marks are in memory of a departed family member or one who has been "reborn".

Q: WHAT IS THIS??!

A: This is an alphabetically sorted list of all mythic creatures I could find on Wikipedia. The names are (mostly) identical to the name that will bring up the wiki page.*

Q: All mythic creatures on wikipedia???

A: There are a few omissions: I found there were too many lake monsters so those I didn't exhaustively include. Wikipedia has a lot more information about Greek individual figures than individual figures from other cultures (like Achilles or Glauce or Dioxippe or Ajax) and when those figures are members of a mythic group (amazons, nymphs, etc.) I included them in this list, but the list may skew in favour of Greek mythic women with fewer male figures. Also I have included some gods, goddesses and non-binary deities but just like with the lake monsters, did not include most of the Wiki pages on godheads of the world. But the list should be fairly exhaustive when it comes to heavenly beings (elves of alfheim, gandharvas, horae and so on) who serve the gods in their divine abodes.

Q: Why are hobbits on the list? Tolkien made those up, right?

A: Well technically there are lists of creatures from folklore and one of those lists, which Tolkien came across, lists hobbits. It doesn't explain what hobbits are and they aren't documented anywhere else, but that may be the origin of the word hobbit.

Q: Why are some of these not actual creatures?

A: folktales that make mention of unique mythic creatures have been included. For example "The Red Ettin" is a English folktale that features herds of two-headed bulls and cows. In other cases, Wikipedia has pages like "Aboriginal Australian Creatures" or "Abenaki & Mi'kmaq beings" which are worth looking at because they provide more mythic creatures that don't have individual pages.

Q: Why are some entries styled "Savanello - Salvanello" or "Dwarf - Dwarves"

A: one of the terms is the singular and the other the plural. The list is a bit peculiar, sorry.

Q: How would you recommend this list is used?

A: You can use it any way you like, just keep in mind that some beings on this list are sacred and ideally try to be culturally sensitive about that. For example, some Ojibwe people are not exactly happy that one of their unnameable spirits has been publicly named, misspelled, attached to anti-Native stereotypes (see also here) and then completely misrepresented and trivialized as a horror monster in pop culture and so the "wendigo" comes with all that baggage, as do many other creatures on this list.

Usually if a creature is from a Neolithic / Bronze Age / Iron Age culture like Egypt or North & South Mesopotamia (Akkadian, Assyrian & Sumerian, Babylonian) there is no one who is going to raise valid ethical concerns around the use of your creature.

Similarly, if something is a generic fantasyland creature (elf, dwarf, dragon, ghost, giant, mermaid etc.) or from Greek and Roman sources (sirens, minotaurs, catoblepas) or medieval bestiaries (hydrus, iaculus) you can flesh those out with more research, but I don't think you will run into ethical problems.

But with a lot of other creatures, outreach to that community has value, because otherwise its not just a fantasy work being authored, but also some serious inter-cultural tensions. Stephenie Meyer, who decided to add Qileute shapeshifters into Twilight but never consulted Qileute and doesn't support their community in any way, is a example. There is no need to follow it.

Mas izin tanya, aku habis baca salah satu artikel yang menuliskan "hakikatnya menguatkan pendapat bahwa ketidakbolehan berjabat tangan laki dan perempuan bukanlah keharaman yang mutlak, tetapi karena ada sebab yaitu agar tidak timbulnya syahwat yang diharamkan dan terjadi fitnah. Untuk itu, mengapa jumhur ulama lebih memilih untuk melarang, disebabkan mengambil jalan tindakan preventif (sad aż-żar’īah) agar hal yang dikhawatirkan tidak terjadi. Berarti disimpulkan hukum dari berjabat tangan dengan lawan jenis sebetulnya makruh atau haram ya?

Tidak mungkin Allah memberikan suatu kepada hambaNya melainkan sesuatu tersebut pasti baik untuk dirinya. Boleh jadi kita menyukai sesuatu tapi Allah benci, Boleh jadi apa yang tidak kita sukai justru itulah yang baik.

Bersyukurlah, jika saat ini Allah masih menginginkan kamu untuk terus berdoa dan beristigfar kepadaNya. Karena tidak ada kebaikan yang paling baik selain Allah kasih nikmat beribadah dan kelezatan untuk terus memperbaiki diri dengan menuntut ilmu.

Jika kasih sayang Allah turun pada siapa saja bahkan manusia paling lalim di muka bumi dengan Allah kasih kenikmatan dunia. Bagaimana dengan kita yang masih terus berusaha mengingat Allah, mungkin saat ini kita berpikir, kok begini ya. Jika kita ikhlas dan ridho atas ketetapNya, dan terus berprasangka baik kepadaNya. Percayalah, nikmat iman yang ada di hati adalah tanda cinta Allah kepada kita.

Aku tau, ini tidaklah mudah. Iman yang kita usahakan untuk di pertahankan pada zaman sekarang, its so hard, so deep. but trust to Allah for everything, kita minta sama Allah kita minta terus sampai kapanpun bahkan dalam keadaan kita merasa tidak baik sekalipun.

Semoga Allah jaga kita selalu, tulisan ini tidaklah keluar dari manusia yang suci dari dosa. Allah telah menutupi banyak aib-abiku. Tulisan ini sampai karena cinta sesama makhlukNya.

Keteladanan yang Utama

Benarlah sebelum segala hal yang lain, mendidik anak membutuhkan KETELADANAN. Pendidikan utama itu adalah keteladanan dalam keluarga. Semua hal baik yang aku pelajari dan aku tekadkan untuk aku lanjutkan kepada anak-anaku.

Semakin dewasa aku akhirnya tau bahwa kedua orang tuaku itu sangat baik dengan pengertian yang mendalam, bukan hanya kepada anak dan keluarganya tetapi pada siapapun.

Satu dari beragam keteladanan baik yang terakhir kali umi niatkan dan lakukan. Kepada tukang sampah di rumahku, sering sekali umiku memberikan tip tambahan, ketika idul adha umi bilang ingin membagikan daging yg sudah diolah kepada tetangga atau tukang sampah, aku bilang “kenapa mi?” mereka pasti kesulitan jika menerima daging yg belum diolah karena harus membeli gas, bumbu, dan cabai misalnya. Umi sering ngisi di daerah karena kekurangan pengajar. Yang paling luar biasa dari umi adalah perannya ketika abi kuliah s2 dan s3, mendidik anak-anaknya saat suami jauh seorang diri, merawat kakaku yang sakit selama dua tahun, luar biasa ibuku ini sangat aku cintai.

Aku juga belajar keteladanan sangat banyak dari abi, abiku itu orang yang sangat ringan tangan dan cerdas secara sosial. Aku tau bahwa abiku pernah mencarikan dana untuk mahasiswa2nya yg kesulitan bayar ukt lewat jalur alumni, beliau jg tidak mempersulit mahasiswanya bimbingan, dan mendapat cerita dari adik tingkat, abi menelpon bimbingannya “apa yang bisa saya bantu?”. Beliau sangat rajin datang ke takziah, undangan, aktif dalam kegiatan masjid dan aktifitas masyarakat. Sangat sayang pada istri dan anak-anaknya. Berkiprah di kampus dan tidak haus jabatan. satu dari sekian kebaikan abi, sebagai sosok yang sangat sangat aku banggakan dalam hidupku

Aku bersyukur, inilah syukurku yang tak terhingga atas titipan Allah kepadaku.

Aku rangkum sedikit perjalanan pemilu ku hingga tahun ini.

2010.

Aku tidak ingat betul apa kontribusiku saat itu. Yang kuingat, hanya lembaran-lembaran stiker dan beberapa banner dengan wajah calon anggota dewan ada di rumah. 1 sebagai DPRD provinsi yang kukenal setelah aktif di rohis dan 1 sebagai DPR RI pernah kerumah yang ternyata abinya salah seorang kawan saat kuliah. Lucunya pas daftar ulang, abiku bertemu beliau yang sedang mengantarkan anaknya daftar ulang juga di fakultas sebelah. Dan, berjalannya waktu kenallah anaknya ini siapa dan masih berinteraksi di media sosial walau hanya saling menonton cerita saja hahaha.

2014.

Pertama kali nyoblos di Bandung sebagai DPK (Daftar Pemiih Khusus) dengan TPS di sekitaran Jl. Tamansari. Anak sekecil itu berkelahi dengan hansip. Mungkin itu lagu yang pas. Pertama kali nyoblos, sendirian, dilempar sana-sini padahal sudah dapat kartu pindah pilih, dan karena ga mau rugi debat kusir berbekal UU yang kuhapalkan sebelumnya, hahaha.

2019.

Nyoblos di dekat rumah, setelah itu jadi tim rekapitulasi. Pertama kali merasakan euforia dan chaos-nya pemilu dari sisi calon anggota dewan. Tapi, terbayar karena beliau terpilih sebagi dewan perwakilan.

2024.

Lebih paham lagi tentang alur pemilu sampai mengawal suara pemilu agar tidak terjadi kecurangan hingga ketok palu siapa saja yang maju menjadi anggota dewan.

Kayaknya, Allah alurkan fase-fase menuju menikah itu juga menjadi fase gimana lebih mendekatkan seorang anak dengan orang tuanya.

Aku sangat terbantu adanya kakakku yang memahami berbagai gejolak emosiku selama ini dan tau bahwa kepulanganku ke kampung halaman adalah untuk berdamai dengan luka-luka pengasuhan yang kumiliki.

Pagi ini, meledaklah itu semua. Tapi ada bagusnya juga, abi jadi tau yang kurasakan selama ini, bukan lewat mulutku, tapi dibantu oleh kakak ku. Nyatanya memang selama ini aku belum punya cukup keberanian dan tekad untuk mengurai & menyampaikan itu pada abiku. Hanya pernah ke umi saja.

Semoga, setelah ini Allah bantu lembutkan semua hati.. berkahi setiap ikhtiarku untuk sembuh, menata diri, dan berjuang dengan jalan yang suci bertemu dengan sang imam yang namanya sudah tertulis di lauhul mahfudz.

Hari-hari ini rasanya konflik batin ini kembali diuji. Tapi jadi makin paham, bahwa komunikasi emang hal terpenting dan jangan sampai diabaikan.

Tengah tahun nanti usiaku 22. Wow. Mungkin di tahun ini aku bakal banyak nyetel lagunya Taylor Swift, it feel like a perfect night ...

Mau ngomong kalo "ngga kerasa ya, waktu cepet banget berlalu, tau tau udh mau 22" but no. Big no! Kerasa bangett, terutama waktu waktu belakangan. Kerasa banget banyak terbenturnya entah hasilnya berbentuk apa. Kerasa banget banyak simpang dan bimbangnya, entah pada akhirnya yg ku tuju tepat atau tidak. Kerasa banget!

Tapi di usiaku yang menjelang 22 ini, rasanya aku juga masih feel like a child. Masih sering minta dikelonin Umi kalau pulang ke rumah, kadang masih disisir rambutnya sama umi, masih sering mbuntutin umi Abi ke mana mana, beneran nih mau 22? Yhaa, abiku pun juga ngga nyangka anak perempuannya sudah beranjak dewasa, rasanya kayak aku masih gadis kecil Abi, ya kan?

Dan belakangan, menuju 22 ini di rumah percakapan mengenai "when u will marry?" mulai bergema. Tapi aku masih nggak ada bayangan sama sekali mengenai pernikahan :" yaa mungkin ada, secuil. Aku suka anak-anak, tapi aku takut dengan pernikahan. Maka ketika pertanyaan-pertanyaan itu muncul, aku cuma meringis sambil mengendikkan bahu.

Satu hal yang aku takutkan saat menikah adalah, aku akan lebih jauh lagi dari umi Abi, i won't. "Umi tuh, nanti kalo aku nikah, emangnya umi ga sedih, aku nanti mungkin bakal lebih jarang pulang" tapi kata umi "yaa kalo anak anaknya bahagia mah, umi juga bahagia". Ah, tapi umi tau tidak, bisa di rumah sama umi Abi tuh bahagiaku udh pake banget. Pokonya ngga dulu. Aku masih mau pulang ke rumah yang ada Umi Abinya. Meski kata teman temanku yang sudah menikah bahagia mereka tambah berkali lipat, tapi aku masih suka bahagiaku versi sekarang: bahagia dengan membersamai Umi dan Abi, sesekali berjauhan menabung rindu, lalu satu waktu pulang utk bertemu.

While the full depth and breadth of West African beliefs about embodiment is far beyond the scope of this work, a brief survey of attitudes and practices among Yoruba, Igbo, Mendi, Akan, Ga, and other West African people in the age of transatlantic slavery reveal that people with disabilities were empowered, integral members of their communities.

Yoruba cosmology and culture offer compelling evidence about these different perspectives. The Yoruba associated blindness, albinism, and people with "twisted limbs, hunched backs and other deformities" with Obatala, the "artist god" who created the form of living things by sculpting them from clay. Physically marked by the deity, people with these characteristics took on a sacred status and served as priests and priestesses in Obatala's shrine. Similarly, the Mende, Akan, and other ethnic groups along the Gold Coast considered Little People especially powerful. The Yoruba even referred to them as en orisa, the possessions of the gods. Seventeenth-century European traveler narratives reveal that they played key roles in royal courts, especially as servants to nobility. The Yoruba, in particular, saw Little People as "uncanny in some rather undefined way, having a form similar to certain potent spirits who carry out the will of the gods." The Akan likewise believed in the spiritual power of Little People, whom they called Mmoetia. Herbalists and healers of the body, mind and spirit, the Mmoetia were associated with various deities and could cause mischief or punish individuals for their transgressions.

Among the Ga, individuals understood in contemporary times as developmentally disabled- especially those who were "incapable of speech" and "of grotesque appearance" were "treated with the greatest kindness, gentleness and patience." Community members regularly fed and provided care for them, not based on pity but, rather, out of "a deep respect for their spiritual status" as "the reincarnation of a deity. For the Yoruba and Igbo, "children born with certain physical marks who developed seizures or forms of madness in which they heard voices were thought of as abiku or ogbánge children. " Similarly viewed as being connected to particular deities, these "spirit children" were drawn to the spirit world unless a diviner or healer intervened to interrupt the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth that trapped them. Because of their perceived spiritual power and as a way to cajole them into not dying and returning to the spirit world once again, abiku or ogbánge children received special treatment in their communities. If they died, their corpses were marked to make them more readily identifiable as abiku or ogbánge when they were reborn. As these brief examples demonstrate, bodies and minds that Europeans and Americans characterized as defective, pitiable, and inferior instead signified power and inspired awe and respect in many West African societies. Along with a range of other cultural beliefs and practices, enslaved Africans forced into the Americas also carried ideas about the body with them. The remnants of these beliefs influenced their descendants' views of disabled family and community members.
