Tell us more about your dan headcanons plssssss 👀👀👀
Hhhhh okay I’m going to put them under read more because a) rambles and b) kinda a bit spoilersish to a fic I was going to write for nanowrimo but you know how it be [because I’m a stressed out sack of shit who never actually fucking writes].
So I think, at least to some people I’ve talked to, it’s generally accepted that the Chivers all take on alternative names [like how Dan named Blaise “Chuck”]. This was also done in the amazing fic The Mossflower by Kimbk which I highly recommend, and I think that’s where the idea generally started?
[Link to Mossflower since I’m on mobile: http://archiveofourown.org/works/11597880/chapters/26068839]
My ideas go in a different direction but I believe in giving credit where credit is due and really The Mossflower the only other Steak fanfiction out there right now and has admittedly I think influenced some headcanons a little, even if I am taking things in my own direction. Again, I highly recommend it; it’s a fantastic read!!!
Anyway, so there was a film by Depieux called NONFILM that also stared Belogrey as an actor named Patt. I’ve hinted before at my Oizo-verse theory [the theory that all his films are connected] and I’m not going to unpack that particular beast, nor am I going to spoil NONFILM [it’s only 48 minutes long and worth the watch] but basically the idea is that Dan is actually Patt, now living in a small town and trying to start his life over.
[NONFILM: https://vimeo.com/32146368 it does contain one brief scene with blood and violence, just so ya know]
The reason I bring it up us because my characterization of Dan is heavily influenced by my interpretation of Patt. Patt is shown as being very… well, he kinda needs someone else to tell him what to do, and he also revels in attention. These are both important to how I view Dan but I’m going to focus more on the latter in an attempt not to spoil a story I haven’t even written yet.
So I see Dan as really, really needing the attention of the other Chivers. He feeds off their adoration. He tries to play it off, but deep down he knows he’s pretty fragile and pathetic and he knows he uses the rest of the Chivers to feed his own desires. I mean, look at how he treats Serge in the film.
Serge is obviously trying really hard to impress Dan in the film, and because of that Dan seems to favor him. I think it really feeds his ego: here’s some kid trying his hardest to be him and to please him and in response you see him get all touchy and shows favor. The same happens with Blaise, who saves his life and sucks up to him, and suddenly Dan is praising Blaise and laughing at his jokes and clinging to him. Honestly, if Georges hadn’t been such a frustrating fuck-up, I think Dan would have done the same to him. He really, really feeds off the attention and validation.
I could go on but that would really go more into spoiler territory, and while some people already know [especially those who helped me come up with said headcanons/the fic idea] I think I’ll keep some secrets as motivation to actually write the damn thing.
