What are the Looms???? The Basics

First, the Great Schism was an important event on early Gallifrey where Rassilon and his supporters and Pythia and her supporters went to war. Pythia was defeated, but she cursed all of Gallifrey with sterility. Accounts differ on whether or not this included all Gallifreyans or if some could still reproduce sexually.

This posed a massive problem for the future of Gallifrey. The Great Houses used devices called Looms to churn out some new Gallifreyans.

Looms had a many chords in them as well as semiotic fluid. Individuals - often soaking wet - are yanked from the Looms by another Gallifreyan. Each chapterhouse has their own Loom. This makes Gallifreyans of the same House related to each other laterally (everyone is a cousin). Many of the loomed Gallifreyans are "born" in a fully grown adult body, but this is not always the case as we have heard about children and teenagers on Gallifrey.

Basically, imagine if a population had suddenly gone sterile. To perpetuate the species, an individual would have to create some sort of device the create the next generation (and the next and the next and the...). This is in essence what a Loom is for Gallifrey! Of course, there are a lot more details in EU lore, but I figured I'd drop some basics (rather then send an overwhelming wall of text).

Their love gives life to their daughter, - Kore.When the roots of Phoebe's legacy grow in her and bloom, Daphnis Phillip Hayashi will make 1000 cranes and beg for mercy for his daughter.

Touching but unsuccessful. Before the last battle on the way to Mount Ofris, she releases the paper crane for the last time. Hecate, in her sympathy, preserves this fragile bird.

This little bird helps Lester Papadopoulos and Meg McCaffrey.

I once again find these parallels and connections between Kore and Daphnis beautiful. The way she releases the crane, as her last hopes burn from the inside out, only wishing that she could somehow receive salvation despite her inevitable end… It’s heartbreaking how inescapable her situation is. And how her father’s wishes echo inside her, all until her death.

I love the detail of Hecate preserving the crane, as to keep her memory alive. Maybe Alabaster could be entrusted with keeping it for a while, as he was a close friend of hers and wanted her legacy to persist? I’m not sure how that could tie into the events of ToA, though.

can we talk about how awesome Pythia was for a second? in the midst of a civilization ending civil war she left her people to document the journey of the 13th tribe for reasons unknown (unless they explained it in Caprica which I still haven't watched) but possibly in the hope that she could keep them tethered to the other 12 so they could one day reunite (which they frakking did!!) and not be lost to the stars forever. And then, after following them on that journey (and I guess sticking around for a while to watch them reconstruct their society since she described the Temple of Aurora) she went on her own pilgrammage back across the universe and made the journey all the way back to the twelve colonies, possibly alone but almost definitely without jump drive technology, to bring back word that the 13th had made a new home.

I don't need another remake of Battlestar (or whatever they're doing over at Peacock, if that project is even still alive), but I would absolutely be seated for a prequel about that journey.
