Hi, since you’ve been reading the star wars books, do you have one you’d recommend as a starting point for someone who’s never read any of them and is interested in seeing what they’re like?
Hi! This is going to be very subjective, given that I'm not sure what your favorite characters are or which era you're interested in, and if you're interested in the best books out there or ones that typify what the books are overall like. BEST BOOKS: - Revenge of the Sith novelization by Matthew Stover, god-tier ability to take my favorite SW movie and make it even more emotional and hard-hitting. It adds even more depth to the story, has beautiful writing, and just is a really satisfying read imo. - Padawan by Kiersten White, which is a story about a young Obi-Wan going on an adventure by himself and I think really captures how I see his youth, that there was struggle and difficulty, but overall it explains why he loves being a Jedi and why there's so much joy in his life. - Light of the Jedi by Charles Soule is good for if you're interested in the High Republic stories and I still think is easily my favorite of the entire line. There was so much good foreshadowing and banger lines that really got Star Wars and was an exciting plot to really hook me on THR.
BOOKS THAT MOST TYPIFY WHAT SW BOOKS ARE LIKE: - Brotherhood by Mike Chen is one that I have some stuff I side-eye in it (everything with Mace) and some stuff I was over the moon for (everything with Obi-Wan) and some stuff I was in the middle about (everything with Anakin). That's Star Wars novels in a nutshell for you! (I also think Dooku: Jedi Lost by Cavan Scott is another good starting place, it's an audiodrama, but it gives an interesting backstory to the character, has some interesting Jedi worldbuilding, and does some really great character work with Asajj Ventress.) - Wild Space by Karen Miller is a Legends book (and I usually try to stick to Disney continuity just for ease's sake) but it has some eyeroll-worthy stuff, some unearned stuff, and some absolutely batshit bonkers in the best way stuff. It's a RIDE to read and maybe not one to take super seriously but I feel like it captures the spirit of SW books. (Alternate suggestion: Dark Rendezvous by Sean Stewart is a really good Yoda & Dooku book with a lot of good appearances by other Jedi characters and one of the better books for Jedi stuff, plus lots of feelings and banger conversations between characters.) (Alternate-alternate suggestion: Another Legends suggestion, since there are a lot of SW books in that continuity, you could read the Jedi Apprentice series by Dave Wolverton and Jude Watson, as long as you know they're aimed at a pre-teen audience and are written accordingly and they are SUPER dramatic and put Obi-Wan through the wringer. I'm not always wild about Watson's writing, but when she writes a banger line, she writes a BANGER line, and they're very fun books that a lot of fandom still folds into their writing.) - The Aftermath trilogy by Chuck Wendig is a good place to start if you want to explore the connective tissue between the originals and the sequels, though I always recommend that I think they work a thousand times better as audiobooks. It's mostly new characters (which, welcome to SW novels) but it also has some really good Leia and Mon Mothma scenes, too. - Leia: Princess of Alderaan by Claudia Gray is for if you're more interested in the Original Trilogy characters and while I wish there'd been more worldbuilding in this one, it's a solid story from someone who genuinely loves this character, and will give you a good idea of what you can expect from Leia books. (If you're more interested in a Han/Leia story, The Princess and the Scoundrel by Beth Revis is on the same level. Solid story with occasional moments of fantastic. I had a blast with the Leia sections especially!)

I'm usually irritated by the people sneering about fanfic insisting it is just intrinsically inferior to early modern writers raiding Ovid or Chaucer or the news or each other or whomever. I've never seen anyone have a decent rationale beyond early modern writing is intrinsically Art and fanfic is intrinsically Not Art, because of reasons (the artistic purity of working within early modern patronage and censorship, I guess?).
I'm not talking Shakespeare specifically (though Lear <3). He was by no means alone in borrowing characters and plots from previous sources and then doing his own thing with them. A lot of my favorite plays of the time re-purpose established stories in this way.
But also, it comes around to kind of funny when people are not only insisting that fanfic is definitionally Not Art and in some way totally different from the usual kind of borrowing that goes back millennia, but also that fanfic is somehow morally degenerate and harmful and unhinged in a new and shocking way.
Because if early modern English literature is defined by anything, it's being absolutely fucking unhinged.
I mean! The Revenger's Tragedy?? The White Devil (borrowed directly from the murder headlines)??? My best beloved 'Tis Pity She's a Whore (pretty obviously a spin on Romeo and Juliet But Now With Incest and Even More Murder)? These things are batshit. And fantastic! I love them! But holding them up on some pedestal of artistic and moral purity is just bizarre IMO.
There are differences between what they did and contemporary fanfic because we live in different eras and cultures, in some ways radically so, because copyright and intellectual property work so differently now and have affected storytelling so much, because of the effects of things like genre romance and the Internet and AO3, because patronage and censorship now work very differently in a lot of ways, because educations and literary norms are so different, and so on.
But is fanfic in some way uniquely trashy and shocking by contrast to what those men were thinking up? Nah.

"Y/N, you have a patient in room 207. Head injury of some sort, superficial. Dr. Humphrey said to go ahead and clean him up, get his vitals and go ahead and send him home." the charge nurse told you. She gave you the chart and sent you off in that direction. Going through things all you wanted to do was go home.
Honestly, you were exhausted, and the idea of a hot shower, your favorite pair of sweatpants and tank top, followed by a bottle of your favorite brand of wine, some chicken wings, and binge-watching that show you've been meaning to watch sounded like a fantastic idea. That... that was the dream. But, right now, that was not reality.
"Hello, Mister..." you take a moment to look at the chart as you lick your lips. "Graham. A head injury I see here. Luckily it's nothing too serious. Nothing a little cleaning up and bandage can't fix. Then we'll send you on your way." You state looking over him for the first time. He was sweet looking, like a battered stray puppy. You tilt your head and let out a soft breath before you check out the wound on his forehead.
As Will is gazing up at you as you step close, he can't help but be in utter awe of you. How your eyes are shaped and the depth of their color of them, your nose seems to have that perfect shape, and your lips move when you speak. The way your voice sounded was like music to his ears and your complexion was absolutely lovely. It was the way your hair fell, and your scent, it was intoxicating in its own way. Though yes, you may have looked exhausted, but it was at that moment, he had this undying need to take care of you, to make you feel like you need not a car in the world.
Will watched you so intently, listening as you spoke, and when your hands came to his skin, he smiled softly. "Your hands are very pleasant." He stated softly.
"Excuse me?" You ask, the compliment took you off guard.
"Your hands, they aren't cold like most, they're very warm, it's a nice change." He stated.
"Oh... well... thank you, Mr. Graham. Now please, stop moving. I need to tend to this okay?" you give a soft chuckle, your eyes soften, and your aura relaxes.
"Oh, yes, sorry." He stated lowly and watches your face as you work.
Finishing up, you toss your gloves in the trash along with the items you used to clean up the wound on his head. Looking over him you offer a kind smile. Your smile, it was something that was really sticking with him. It was just you. Love at first sight, some would say, but to him, you had become an obsession. He needed to know everything was to know about you. He needed to know how you took your coffee, how you smelt after a shower, how soft your skin was after lotion, what you wore when you weren't at home, and how you cut your food, it was the simple things that drove him mad with needing to know.
He started to follow you. He began to learn your routine. Where you got gas for your car, what floor of your apartment you lived on, what time you went to bed, and when you went to work. He learned all of the little details. It was all so simple in his mind.
It wasn't like you knew, you were so involved in yourself and your work you didn't think to pay attention to your surroundings. And when he could have struck any time, he decided that his obsession was starting to consume him. He was dreaming of you, he was following you to the grocery store and would get behind you in line just to smell your hair.
You were that one thing he couldn't let escape his mind. He didn't want you to escape his mind. He damn well knew what he wanted. He had dreamt of it.
One night you were out of work, and instead of getting to your car, he approached you from behind, and with a rag he had used chloroform on he placed it over your mouth and nose, and after a few brief moments of inhalation you had passed out. Your body falls limp in his grasp, putting you in the back of his vehicle.
He didn't take you back to his place, instead, he took you to someplace he knew no one would come snooping. Not even Hannibal was going to come looking for you. He knew who you talked to, who you avoided, no one was coming. The thing is, he wasn't set out to murder you, he was obsessed with you, and he was going to do anything in his power to make you love him.
Once you were tied to the chair he sat across the room watching you, but it was taking a fair bit of time to wake you up. He watched, and watched, but nothing. Growing antsy he got up, and decorated the room around you, with flowers and nice things. Coffee- fresh even. Biting his lip he waited, and at that moment he heard you stir he moved to you.
"Wh...where am I?" you asked.
"Hi, I don't know if you remem-"
"Graham... head injury, why am I here? What happened?" you ask.
"I needed you. I have fresh coffee, flowers, and snacks..." he points out
"No, you needed me? Coffee, flowers, snacks... why am I tied up. Graham..." you start to panic
"No, no relax, I'm not going to hurt you I promise. You're safe, I promise, please, call me Will." He stated with a kind smile... damn a loving smile.
"Relax?! I'm tied up in some stranger's home! LET ME GO!" you demand.
"No, no, please, You don't have anyone else. I promise. You won't want to go home after this. Relax. Okay? I'll show you." He nodded.
This was the start of something utterly insane, he hoped that maybe you were going to love him, that you would stay, and maybe in time you did, or you managed to escape, or he let you go, the end is unforeseen, but it's not like you cannot dream of what the future for you holds.

Okay it’s 3am and I have to be at my first day of work at my new job in seven hours.. but I just had a THOUGHT.
So hear me out- Jay can control electricity. Obviously.
But has anyone else considered the idea of him being able to basically mind control other people?? Or hack their bodies?? Since humans literally run on electrical impulses??
Now I know Nya can’t draw the water out of his lungs, but that doesn’t mean that using your element inside someone else’s body is impossible. Maybe that’s just confined to other elemental masters. And of course I haven’t seen DR yet (two episodes away from finishing Crystallized!! I’ll have caught up with DR by this time next week for certain), but I’ve heard a lot of discussion about Jay coming back as a villain in S2… can you imagine how absolutely batshit of a villain Jay concept would be if he came back and just mind controlled people?? And it would totally tie into his cult leader antics as well (I’m still so sad that the League of Jays was pretty much abandoned after the first couple episodes… it was such a funny concept and could’ve actually been used for some fantastic plot/character development … but… alas :( )
Anyway. Basically all that to say I just got smacked in the face with a new Villain Jay idea and I’m soooo going to start using him for fic stuff. Maybe I’ll even tie it in to the AU concept I’ve been working on for a while.. maybe..

see the thing about Dream is
the thing is
it's very tempting to look at Tom Sturridge and go ah yes my sad scrungly wet cat anthropomorphic personification, because he does have Those Eyes and That Hair, and then it is very tempting to look at some panels of Dream in the comics and go ah yes my depressed weird friend who lives in a void, except sometimes i feel that this is too humanizing, especially if you're talking about Dream pre-1300s
and i think in the comics in a lot of his pre-Hob Gadling interactions with mortals you can see that he is balls to the wall batshit insane
his track record with loving mortals is absolutely bonkers
>Nada, Queen of the First City, pursued Dream and then when she discovered who he was went "oh shit, humans loving the Endless is forbidden by my people, we definitely shouldn't" and Dream confronted by a mortal he couldn't have went grabby grabby hands, convinced her to fuck him anyways, and then condemned her to Hell afterwards because the sun nuked her city and Nada, grieving, said she didn't want to be Dream's Queen (on account of the sinning)
>Killala of the Glow, an alien lady precursor to the Green Lanterns who punches through to the Dreaming by accident and Dream falls in love instantly, he knows her for basically 3 months and invites her to a cosmic entities convention to show her off, does not tell her that all of these people are literal quasars and planets and shit. she freaks out understandably, seeks comfort in the arms of the sun of her world (encouraged by Desire), and Dream, seeing them embracing, just fuckin leaves her there "the sun'll get her home," he says, "they're going to the same place, i'm not crying YOU'RE crying"
>Alianora, who was sent by Desire to help Dream fuck up some old gods, was given her own private island and also one of the Dream-Stones (for show fans, the ruby is a Dream-Stone!). i sincerely believe the only reason that Dream lost interest in her is because she spent so long in the Dreaming that if she tried to wake up she would die, and Dream is absolutely fascinated by things that can change (prob because that's his tragic character flaw is he can never change himself quite enough)
he don't got a great track record with his non-mortal lovers either (Thessaly, An Witch, and Calliope, the Muse), but over and over again with mortals, brief and ephemeral and changing, Dream cannot regulate himself. he burns super hot, super bright, and then either gets sucked back into work, or the fact that he has 0 Chill puts his lover off entirely. he has no concept of compromise and he's unable to not throw himself wholeheartedly into love. having Dream love you must be like being loved by a hurricane or the core of the earth. can you imagine what that would be like? having the attention of something that huge and fathomless and ancient focused on you like a laser? it would be like being crushed under a mountain.
this is why i think Hob Gadling is such a fantastic foil to, and the Premier Ship Of, Dream. Hob Gadling also throws himself wholeheartedly and joyfully into every new thing, Hob is out there living his best life and telling stories and i think he mentions doing cocaine in like the 90s in one of the comics? but, point being, Hob doesn't ever let immortality go to his head. he is the most mortal mortal that ever mortaled, he just happens to have a concept of eternity that, no matter how infinitesimally, actually approaches what Dream is.
it's just that the dynamic you get now, with a mortal who understands the true concept of endlessness, is "Hob I have brought to you a brooch forged from the heart of a dying star, pearls harvested from oysters that have never seen the sun and never will, sapphires infused with the waters of Eden"
"oh that's gorgeous dear how thoughtful I'll put it on the shelf with the Polished Sphere of Crystallized Auroras and Hope"
and then Dream fucks off to do his job for like 8 years and Hob isn't too fussed because he spent like 6 centuries waiting for this weird wet cat of a man to fuckin introduce himself, he can wait a few years for them to meet up for dinner again
anyways i wrote all of these as a partial explanation as to why Dream is so fuckin weird and turbo in Husbands, and it's because he's a sad scrungly pathetic cat man AND he's also an enormous endless eldritch creature that has no concept of emotional regulation but also a terminal fascination with the changeability and fragility of mortals that translates into absolute fucking insane love

Pairings/Groups I would like to see in the Life Series.
Grian & Cleo: They can both be extremely chaotic and murder-happy but they can also just be someone exhausted parent. I think they could really cause some trouble together.
Team Piss (Pearl, Impulse, Skizz, and Scott): Listen, the acronym is funny also putting two dynamic duos together really works. Imp and Skizz is a classic and Pearl and Scott work either really well or are batshit insane together. Also Imp and Pearl are also another awesome duo, so this is a very skilled team, two former winners an angel and a devil. I love that for them.
Scar & Big B: Cookie boys!!! Listen I just think it would be neat and they could live in a cookie themed flying saucer, raining down tnt minecarts and arrows onto anyone within range.
Jimmy, Cleo, and Ren: This would be fun okay. Ren and Cleo get on pretty well and I think adding Jimmy to them would be awesome. You know Ren is gonna be dramatic as hell and that he would have a blast playing around with having Jimmy as like a squire or something where he eventually gets promoted. Then Cleo could look on at her two dumbasses just like she did in Limited Life.
GIGS: I just love the phasmo-boys. Listen is it is the dads and their idiots sons. I think this would be a great way to work in the desert duo but in a way where Scar has several people looking out for him and Grian is allowed to go buckwild and isn't feeling like he has to be responsible all the time. Skizz and Scar could go out at do some bonding by murdering enemies when they're both on red and Grian and Impulse can cause insane tnt explosions.
Pearl, Lizzie, Jimmy, & Grian: This is the ultimate sibling energy team okay? Seablings, sky siblings, Jimmy and G, they are just siblings your honor. I think this team would bully each other mercilessly but heaven help whomever decides to hurt one. I am sure that they would accidentally kill each other though.
Martyn, Skizz, Scar, & Impulse: Team SIMS would rock. Martyn is scary competent and would contribute. Scar is a great shot and could probably run a brilliant scam to get their team resources. Skizz would keep the team together and be a source of comedy as always. Impulse is for sure the team dad and is setting up traps and could probably win a season. This is a power team and I just think they'd be neat. There hasn't been a Martyn and Scar team up and I think it would rock.
Grian & Tango: I think these two would be unstoppable! Also The explosions would be fantastic. You know that they would be a chaotic force for evil and I love that for them <3
Joel & Ren: Wolf boys okay. I think that Joel would be feral for any teammate and something about Ren makes his allies absolutely insane. This team up would fucking rock and that is that.
Tango & Joel: Listen Tango could work well with someone who loves and is so utterly loyal to their teammates that they would die for them permanently. That someone is Joel through and through. I think that they could go far together and maybe Tango would get a more impactful death story-wise.
Lizzie & Jimmy: Seablings! She'll be Jim's scary big sister and he can be her sopping wet cat of a younger brother. They are just so sibling ya know.

Psycho Analysis: Winds of Destruction
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(WARNING! This analysis contains SPOILERS!)
Here I am, dirty and faceless Waiting to heed your instruction On my own, invisible warrior I am a Wind of Destruction!
As many of you might now, I’m a huge fan of the Metal Gear series. What you probably don’t know is  that, despite the series having a penchant for squads of quirky bosses, I’m not really a huge fan of many of them. FOXHOUND? I mean I like Mantis and Ocelot. The Sons of Liberty? I guess Vamp is alright. B&B Corps? I barely remember any of them. I love the Cobra Unit, but that’s because all of them are batshit insane and weird. I’m not saying they’re bad boss fights or anything—far from it, they all offer fantastic boss fights—but as characters I’m not really big on many of these villains.
The Winds of Destruction, on the other hand? I fucking love these guys (and girl).
Metal Gear Rising is what happens when you turn the insane anime action of the main series up to 11, and so it should be no shock the squad of bosses is cranked up as well. Each and every one of these guys is nuttier than the last, and the whole lot of them are some of the most memorable and memetic characters in the franchise. Also Khamsin exists.
Motivation/Goals: So besides the obvious way they tie into the plot because they’re working for Armstrong, each of these villains has a theme song which pretty much details what makes them tick, what they’re about, and expands upon them once you get their health low enough during their boss battles.
Mistral’s theme, “A Stranger I Remain,” details how she has come to this land to sate her bloodlust, and how she truly feels most at home on the battlefield; Monsoon’s theme, “Stains of Time,” acts as a reinforcement of his nihilistic outlook; Sundowner’s theme, “Red Sun,” expounds on his nature as a card-carrying villain and how he revels in the violence and bloodshed he causes; Sam’s theme, “The Only Thing I Know for Real,” lays out his desire for a one-on-one duel with Raiden, his foil, to see who is truly worthy to stand up and continue fighting for their ideals; and Khamsin’s song, “The Hot Wind Blowing,” showcases his patriotic nature as well as just generally acting as a badass boast. Most of these songs  act more as thematic seasoning for the characters, adding on to what is already established in their cutscenes, but for some like Khamsin and to a lesser extent Mistral, it’s pretty much the extent of their development.
Performance: Every single one of these actors really brings their all to make these characters memorable.
Sundowner is the ham and cheese of the group, working alongside Armstrong to ensure that all the scenerey is well and truly chewed. And who better to bring on the ham than Crispin Freeman? Salli Saffioti is Mistral, and is it any shock she’s also played Black Widow before? And also Hilda from Fire Emblem, I guess? Then we have Monsoon, played by John “The Crypt Keeper” Kassir, who delivers everything with gusto as always. Phillip-Anthony Rodriguez makes Sam just as smarmy and charming as a rival should be, and Benito Martinez puts in his all to his brief role of Khamsin. Not a weak vocal performance here, I’d say.
Final Fate: Seeing as they are video game bosses, it should come as no surprise to anyone that Raiden slices each and every one of them into confetti. Special mention to the absolutely brutal death of Mistral, where she gets frozen in liquid nitrogen before you get to shatter her.
Best Scene: For most of them, they only get the one scene followed by their boss battle, with the exception of Sundowner and Sam. Mistral and Khamsin’s boss battles are obviously their finest hours, though Mistral’s takes the cake between the two seeing how explosive and exciting it is, living up to the promise of that first battle with Metal Gear RAY, while Khamsin’s is the finale of a DLC featuring the game’s ultimate jobber, Blade Wolf.
Monsoon has a lot more going for him, because before his boss fight he gives off one of the most amazing monologues ever put into a Metal Gear game, as he lectures Raiden on memes (“The DNA of the soul!”) and his nihilistic philosophy. Then you get to have a kickass boss fight where, if you do well enough, you will make this nihilistic bastard beg for his life as you hack him to pieces.
Best Quote: Monsoon has the honor of dropping the most iconic bit of dialogue in the entire game (outside of everything out of Armstrong’s mouth, of course):
"Free will is a myth. Religion is a joke. We are all pawns, controlled by something far greater: Memes. The DNA of the soul. They shape our will. They are the culture — they are everything — we pass on."
Sundowner, being the massive slab of ham that he is, is no slouch in the memetic lines himself. Two stand out, and that’s his battle cry of “I’M FUCKIN’ INVINCIBLE!” and his proclamation that he wants things to go back to the old ways of war, specifically “IN THE GOOD OLD DAYS AFTER 9/11!” This is hilarious because even with confirming that 9/11 happened in the Metal Gear universe, it still is probably only the second worst thing to happen to New York.
Sam doesn’t really have any great quotes that stand out, but this man is a master of reactions, from his shit-eating grin to his rousing applause. I figured I’d highlight that here.
Tumblr media
Final Thoughts & Score: Let’s look at them from best to least best; I don’t think any of them are awful, though some are better than others obviously.
Monsoon
Tumblr media
Outside of Armstrong and Sundowner, Monsoon is absolutely the best character in the game. I think part of it is because he so thoroughly represents everything the Metal Gear series is summed up in one character; he’s incredibly philosophical and legitimately fascinating while also being hilariously over-the-top and spouting off some of the most ridiculous and cheesy lines you will ever hear, all while being a bright red-and-black cyborg voiced by a guy famous for acting as the emcee of a horror show. Literally everything about him is the pure essence of the franchise, so even without Kojima’s direct involvement we still got a beautiful 10.5/10 character.
Sundowner
Tumblr media
As far as the Winds of Destruction go, Sundowner is second only to Monsoon. He’s just over-the-top in ways I never could have even imagined for this series, and the only thing holding him back is he is almost immediately outdone by Armstrong two levels after you kill him. Still, this bloodthirsty butcher just revels so much in being a huge asshole and delivers all his lines with the Southern-fried charm that only an actor like Crispin Freeman could deliver, and you have a character I wish was around in the good old days after 9/11. He’s an easy 10/10.
Also he is literally just this image as a character, and that’s amazing:
Tumblr media
Jetstream Sam
Tumblr media
Sam is a really great character in the Cyborg Ninja tradition, easily following in the footsteps of characters like Gray Fox and Raiden himself. The sheer badassery of this man, a normal human whose only cyborg trait is a single arm and yet who is still capable of taking down a RAY by himself, cannot be overstated, and I think he gets a big boost from being playable. There’s an underlying tragedy to the character too, with how he’s something of a fallen hero whose sword was once a tool of justice but who became disillusioned due to his inability to make the world a better place all on his own  and losing to Armstrong in a fight. He’s easily the most complex character besides Armstrong, and his boss battle and theme song are both top notch. I really can’t justify anything less than a 10/10.
Mistral
Tumblr media
As much as I love Mistral, it’s hard to deny she is really the epitome of a one-scene wonder. She does not get nearly as much characterization as her compatriots and is very vague and ambiguous even after the DLC… but that might be the point. Her image song is “A Stranger I Remain,” and though we know of her bloodthirsty nature from that song, Mistral still remains a mystery to us to the bitter end. But hey, it’s hard to deny that what we do see of her is pretty impressive (and I’m not just talking about her boobs, I promise). She’s not quite as good as her fellow Winds I’d say, but considering she’s a 9.5/10 that’s not really a knock against her.
Khamsin
Tumblr media
Despite having one of the best songs in the game to his name, as well as an intriguing personality and motivations, Khamsin really is incredibly forgettable, to the point his comrades  don’t even bother to mention him in the main campaign. This is not something you should ever be saying about a dude who looks like Quaritch in his mech suit at the end of Avatar on steroids, and yet here we are. Of course, he’s certainly not awful by any means and he makes for a great boss fight, but he falls severely short of the main game’s enemies. Mistral managed to score as high as she did with only having one level to her, but Khamsin only manages a 5.5/10 with the same. Maybe it’s because he just feels so inconsequential… Eh, at least he looks cool.

Hey can u do a young justice team x John Constantine’s apprentice fem readers? Tysm 💗💗
TEAM, MEET... CONSTANTINE NUMBER 2?
WARNINGS/TAGS + sfw, gender neutral o/c or reader insert, vague descriptions of violence, blood and injuries from fights.
A/N + note that this constantine is based mainly on dc animated movie (a little bit of fanon mayhaps) 'cause i have yet to read any comics for him yet, but i hope you enjoy anyway:)!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
★ gets thrown into the team on a whim decision by constantine ♥︎ he says it's for experience, she/he/they know that probably means he’s going on some reckless streak and needs to make sure there’s someone to babysit her/him/them
★ always back and forth between team and missions with constantine ♥︎ always comes back with the wildest fucking stories ♥︎ “yeah so that’s how i almost got trampled to death by a hoard of demon elephants” “BRO?”
★ batshit crazy ♥︎ has seen too much crazy shit that almost everything is normal for her/him/them now
★ always taking one for the team ♥︎ whether that’s stupid decisions or dangerous stunts, she/he/they do it and do it flawlessly ♥︎ mainly does so she/he/they can take the blame and get scolded because she/he/they genuinely couldn’t careless ♥︎ always bites back during after mission critiques with batman ♥︎ “oh? you thought that was a bad decision? what about that one time you attacked felix faust’s base when it turns out rich’s dumbass had actually taken over the house of mystery? yeah, yeah, how about we start with that? or would you like to discuss the time that you-” ♥︎ constantine gets a lot of shit from the league about her/his/their attitude but he’s too amused to address it
★ is not beyond starting a petty fight. or two ♥︎ absolutely fantastic for creating chaos as a cover
★ absolute best buddies with zatanna and artemis ♥︎ i know zatanna’s a bit weird fitting in to timelines, but i’m assuming constantine would be older in the yj universe ♥︎ her/his/their reckless and just chaotic energy works so well
★ rocks the same get-up as constantine ♥︎ beige trench, messy button-up and loose tie but with more flair ♥︎ messy mullet with streaks, makeup and many piercings ♥︎ is it practical? no. but does she/he/they look fantastic? hell yeah
★ has a miniature spellbook attached to a chain on their pant’s waist ♥︎ they occasionally enlarge it during battles to search for overly complicated spells

Okie, I just finished the show. Maybe a hot take, but I thought it was solid. The ending being good is debatable (I definitely wanted more than what we got) but the characterization of everyone was absolutely solid. Nine was a fantastic antagonist. He's intelligent, troubled, selfish, clingy, lonely and self destructive, just as much of a danger to others as he is to himself, but very much sympathetic and understandable of a character. He feels like such a younger version of Shadow who is still so angry at the world, willing to tear them all to pieces to achieve his goals because they've never ones shown him kindness at any point in his life, leaving him with no kindness to give to others as a consequence. But he has a love for technology, self esteem issues, remorseless sass and a genuine attachment to Sonic, however dysfunctional it was. He's fundamentally Tails, but so warped and jaded that he feels like a refreshingly new character. Same goes for everyone else. No version of each character felt the same. Their personalities all felt unique to them and their character growth felt rewarding. And I have very unexpected attachment to Black Rose. I love every Rose here, but she out of them all felt so much like the old Amy with her unfiltered insanity, chaotic energy, readiness for violence and disrespect, overwhelming passion and leadership and compassion for those who look to her for strength that I utterly adore her. And she's a PIRATE for God's sake! Let her be free! Let her go wild! Let her go absolutely batshit and unhinged the way only Amy can!
Prime Shadow is absolutely one of the best versions (and my personal favourite) of Shadow we have-- his voice acting, his personality perfectly hitting the middle between being too cold and being too caring, not too edgy but not too soft, still a snobbish and harsh motherfucker who preferably acts alone and sucks at getting his point across without sounding callous but ultimately well-intentioned and trying his best to protect the people and world he cares for while not being prideful enough to reject the help of others to achieve that (and actually willing to run when he knows he can't win for now.) Something I missed about Shadow was his empathy and care for others while acting like he doesn't mean anything, and it really shined during his time with Sonic. He was pissed to hell about what Sonic did, and rightfully so, but he knows when his anger contributes nothing of worth to their situation and is able to stay rational and logical for both their sakes. And even in his anger, Sonic's remorse about everything was enough for him to calm down, taking a softer approach with him than he normally would've. He's--UGH. HE'S SO GOOD. I LOVE SO HIM MUCH. Like, I really like IDW Shadow, but Prime Shadow is just built different.
I really appreciate what the show did with all of them and even tho I would've liked a bit more for the finale I do like how Sonic's arc came full circle with him learning to listen and be more appreciative of his friends. While there were definitely some glaring issues with s3, and there are some things where I'm like ''WHY??'' (more on that later), but the story was great, the characterisation was incredible, the animation felt very bouncy and energetic, and overall it was a very fun show and exciting journey I loved every step of the way. Not just the show, but all the incredible fan works that was made along the way are absolutely priceless. I'm really glad this show was made.

Undead Unluck (2024 anime)
I was not ready
It's fitting that this is a David Production work because Undead Unluck is the one of the most organically JoJo-tier batshit works I've seen in a while. It's a 24 episode series and I think the best way to summarise it is this:
Episode 1: A man who cannot die (the titular Undead), and looks like Dante and acts as if he were as fucking nuts as MGR Raiden, meets a girl who kills everyone she touches (the titular Unluck) and stops her from killing herself to see if she can kill him.
Episode 6: He marries a zombie woman so she'll tell him where the incarnation of rot is lurking
Episode 10: As a reward for completing tasks set out by a demonic book, all languages except for English are erased. This is the lesser of the two batshit things this book will do this episode
Undead Unluck's roots as an attempt to be a serialised series in Weekly Shounen Jump show through pretty hard in its early stages - the first episode absolutely speedruns setting up all the basic foundational shit typical battle shounen series have, and it gradually and tangibly shakes that off once it's hit the survival metrics and can start actually being itself, where it goes from good to fucking fantastic, and it just keeps going.
It's comically violent, unapologetically horny, the character designs are fucking great and it's a pretty high-end David Production work: it's slick as fuck throughout, the action is incredibly animated and choreographed and they really sell things like the reveals of people's power names (the characters are all 'Negators', who 'negate' some concept - i.e. Undead cannot die, Unluck brings harmful-to-lethal disaster at a touch, Unmove stops all movement, etc). It's visually creative and varied throughout, being just a joy to watch no matter what.
It is, also, remarkably tightly plotted and absolutely crafty in its setup and foreshadowing. It's got the whole package!
That it's apparently been slept on is a crying shame (the anime's debut didn't move volume numbers or shift much BD sales), it deserves much more than it's got. I'm not fussed on MHA and actually quite like Demon Slayer and I would rank this quite above both (we'll see where I place JJK when I get there), but maybe I'm just its specific brand of freak.

I just have to say that Shiso Mikagi from Ayashi no Ceres is legitimately the best antagonist I have ever seen. They don't make them like that anymore.
He's absolutely unhinged. He's batshit crazy. His behavior is so unpredictably weird that none of the protagonists can begin to guess at his next move.
And yet, his evil is NEVER watered down, even when the narrative (successfully) works to paint him as sympathetic despite his misdeeds. He is the devil incarnate and yet. YET.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shiso Mikage is also fantastic because his reincarnation is the main character's twin Aki. He subsumes this twin completely and replaces his will with his own. The body is *his,* even if the main character perceives him as her brother. They can't kill him without killing Aki. It's such a mindfuck.
And somehow the artist manages to easily distinguish Shiso Mikage from Aki with her art style. It isn't just the scar on his cheek. It's something dead and flat in his eyes.
I just love this antagonist. He's the gold standard.

Repossession by DreamsOfSpike. Mature, 190k words, Aziracrow. Summary: Crowley and Aziraphale's clandestine love affair has spanned the past fourteen years, with Heaven and Hell none the wiser. Or so they thought. Angel and demon alike quickly learn that Heaven can be far crueler than Hell. https://archiveofourown.org/works/19710115 Holy shit this fic took turns destroying me and healing me with all the batshit graphic and horrifying Crowley whump and comfort. I deeply appreciated how the author mixed flashbacks of torture and sexual abuse with 'current day' scenes that were a lot of comforting!Aziraphale. I adored the happy ending. Also the author posted instances of fanart inspired by the fic and it's been awesome (and gut-wrenching evocative, just like the fic) to see.
Constitution of an Ox by Bazzpop. Teen+, Aziracrow, 5k words. Summary: What if Crowley hadn’t been summoned back down to hell at the end of The Resurrectionists minisode? Aziraphale would have taken care of an off his head on laudanum demon, that’s what. https://archiveofourown.org/works/49752175 Oh my gosh I loved all the cuddling in this fic. Especially the encore in the morning, I was so happy they didn't immediately split apart out of automatic "our sides wouldn't like it" fear, which is a common thing in GO fic I've noticed (great for angst but sometimes you just want them to sink into each other's arms and stay there)
Echoes of Luke 10:34 by ChummyGeekery. Teen+, Aziracrow, 8k words. Summary: These days, the humans are calling it "Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome." Crowley just thinks of it as the way his body's been ever since the Fall. He's never really had to talk about it- until now. https://archiveofourown.org/works/21045344 Adored this fic. I loved the way Crowley's problems emerged over time in this story and how Aziraphale slowly learned what was going on and extended so much love comfort and compassion towards him.
Migraines Are A Bitch by obsidian_boi. Teen+, 5k words, Aziracrow. Summary: It's the night of the End of the World and Crowley feels a migraine starting. It's been a terribly long day and he no longer has the energy to fight it off. Aziraphale is there though, and Crowley leans heavily on the angel as they head back to his place. The pain only gets worse, but will Crowley actually allow himself to take Aziraphale's help? https://archiveofourown.org/works/20209423 I *loved* this! Oh my gosh the *second* time poor Crowley's head smacked the bus window I was howling inside hoping Aziraphale would do exactly what the author described because it's so compassionate and protective and then the rest of Aziraphale taking care of him 😭 I really loved this.
Palliative Practices by VerdantVulpus. Mature, 19k words, Aziracrow. Summary: Based on the following prompt. What if every time Crowley does a good deed, he suffers pain after because it goes against his demonic nature (and the greater the good, the more intense the pain)? Then Aziraphale finds out that Crowley has been living with that pain ever since the Arrangement. or 5 times Crowley masked his pain and 1 time he accepted help. https://archiveofourown.org/works/26601871 Oh my gosh the angst in this fic was absolutely the best. Fantastic angst writing. I would love more more fics with this kind of angst and every conceivable variation of comforting!Aziraphale

hello may i get gothic novel recommendations as per your recent reblog
Villette by Bronte (one of them idr which one) has religious trauma and an unreliable narrator (also i LOVE generva)
Bronte books in general because they have similar themes of longing, death, and repression
Lady Audleys Secret is one of my all time faves, even though it isnt told from the perspective of a female protagonist its an absolute delight and shows the same dynamics of repression and violence
Carmilla, hot lady vampire save me, hot lady vampire please save me
Fall of the House of Usher (sickly dead woman becomes the embodiment of fear itself)
Generally I love Sensation Novels from the 1800s (later decades but i forgot which ones) because they go batshit insane. Def give Lady Audley a shot
Not an old book series but the Flavia de Luce books are fantastic and feature an autistic and grim little girl becoming her small towns detective- second to her usual job as the small town menace. Shes hilarious, i believe the opening sequence of the first book is her imagining being a decomposing body in a field (she loves chemistry)
Also not a gothic book but I always have to plug the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency. This series is an excellent love letter to the Botswana women that the author grew up around, as he himself is a white scotssman. The books are medically accurate, clever, and diverse. They cover topics like domestic violence, systemic sexism and racism, family hierarchy, evolving standards of south african tradition, and found family. The author, McCall Smith, is very interesting and his writing and life work conveys an appreciation for black people that I rarely find in white authors. The protagonist is very clever and hands on but still retains fragility and frustrations that make her a fully realized character instead of the (now popular) "strong black woman" portrayed in media.

Things the fucking slap about the non Intrepid Heroes Dimension 20 seasons in order of release:
Escape from the Bloodkeep
Absolutely stellar party with Amy Vorpahl, Erika Ishii, Ify Nwadiwe, Matthew Mercer, Mike Trapp and Rekha Shankar
Includes the one familiar the Brennan refuses to harm, and it’s the most horrible creature you’ve ever met.
Speaking of J’er’em’ih, I don’t think Trapp gets as much appreciation for Sokhbarr as I think he deserves because when Trapp commits he fucking COMMITS. And that one very specific investigation check? Ooh baby it was so good
Speaking of boss ass moves, Rekha’s balloon ass fuckery was such a good move. And Ify being like “can we be bros with the eagles?” ending up being one of the best moves to do? Absolutely fantastic
Honestly one of the funniest seasons of D20 tbh imo. Like I do not like LOTR, so I didn’t think I’d like this season. But it’s such a hilarious season, no wonder it’s one of the side quests I feel like folks recommend the most
Tiny Heist
The McElroy fam? Even if you don’t listen to TAZ (like me) you know they’re a good time
The Rick Diggins speech is just so fucking bananas it’s so good. Rick Diggins is also just the most batshit character
Personally, I love heist stuff. It’s so fun! And I really found the heist itself to be so fun! (Griffin’s part it in is my favorite, Bean is adorable and I love him)
Also there’s always something so fun about the mechanics of tiny universes within our universe? The way they explain toys and stuff coming to life is really interesting and fun imo
Lily Du’s first time at the table and Jess Ross at the table! Speaking of I love how Jess completed her arch, she knew what was going down with her character and made a complete story. It was great!
Pirates of Leviathan
Personally I love this season, and our first time having Aabria at the table ahhhhhh (also my first encounter of “please have the camera focus on Aabria, she makes the absolute best expressions”) Plus, it’s back in the Fantasy High Universe which is always fun to explore more about the universes (and get some NPC cameos/appearances!)
Also tbh I love all of the PCs in this series? Like they’re all so interesting and unique, and are such full characters.
Literally the absolute best PC introduction that exists in d20, Bob I love you so goddamn much
There’s a goddamn Queer Eye joke in this season and at first it’s played for laughs but honestly becomes like… the softest thing? And it warms your soul? And it also features Matt Mercer as a tall ass rat man (this season also has a rare pair I ship and I think no one else does lol but I love it so)
Pirate T-Rex. Just feel like that alone needs its own bullet point lol
Mice and Murder
The mystery!!! Is so fun!!! It’s cool at the end of the season to see how everything was connected, and it’s fun to go on the journey with the party
Katie Marovitch rolling the first nat 20 of the season and not understanding the implications of a natural 20 for a good couple of minutes will always be funny
This season is pretty much all classic College Humor cast mates, so if you’ve been watching College Humor stuff for over a decade like me you’re sure to find some joy in it
Sam Reich has some of the most killer one liners in this season and he’s just such a fun character. Honestly, this season is just so goofy and everyone is just trying to make each other laugh. It’s delightful
The texting element!!! Is so dang interesting!!! And it works so well for the mystery
Misfits and Magic
The first season with a new GM!!!! Aabria!!! When that trailer came out we were all SHOOK, truly began a new era of d20 and we love it
And first time PC Brennan??? Listen he’s such a fun PC we love the strange lil guys he plays
Sam Black deserves so much more love, she’s such a fun PC. Like Danielle would just say one liners that would knock me the fuck out, she’s so dang funny
Listen one of the funniest moments to me will always be Lou and Brennan as their actual selves being like “Mukbang? That’s not a real thing right? No… no it’s not”
The fact that one of the animal companions is straight up just a basketball is hilarious and ridiculous
The Seven
If you love the Fantasy High universe and want to know more about some of the side NPCS, ooh baby they’re PCs now and they’re all played by hilarious cool folks (including our first time having Izzy Roland, Persephone Valentine and Becca Scott in the dome!)
This season absolutely feels like a sleepover with friends. Everyone is giggly and having so much fun, and it’s so fun to watch (and also emotional when you least expect it lol)
I’m having a hard time describing funny moments because it’s just one of those things where you have to experience it to get it? Like this season had me cry laughing but I will never be able to describe the sexy duck outfit as hilariously as Becca does it’s just so good
Oooh before we got killer costume descriptions from ACOFAF you better believe we got it during this season. And if you’re a big costume nerd like me you’ll just be like heart eyes mother fucker
On an interesting note, Brennan is kind of playing both an NPC and PC? Technically he’s still just playing an NPC but Zelda is like… part of the party (obviously part of The Seven). And it’s a fun change!
Shriek Week
Gabe Hicks is a delight as the GM! I am constantly thinking about the line “You may be yolked but this man is a straight up omelette” because it slaps and tbh I would love to see him in the dome again
I think this is canonically the only season where characters FUCK
Another season with a very fun cast, like all of the cast has big horny energy and it’s so silly! If you’ve watched this season you understand Lily’s energy in Dirty Laundry a lot more lollll
Also this season canonically has Mothman and The Count from Sesame Street as characters and it makes me giggle every time
Tbh I really wish this season had more time but if you’re looking for a super short series, it’s only four episodes long!
Coffin Run
Jasmine Bhullar is SO fun as the GM and I feel like really plays off the PC energy well? She was so much fun
This season is another one that is just goofy fun! And you know I love me some goofy fun (the whole eating letters thing is so stupid and so fun)
Personally think the sets for this series are SO cool like oh my god?? The trainnnnnnn ahhh
This is kind of a bigger spoiler but I will never be over the wine glass props for that one combat? When she pulls them out I DIE
This cast REALLY goes in on their characters and plays them so big, it’s delightful
A Court of Fey & Flowers
Do I really need to get into why this season fucking slaps? I’m pretty sure it’s one of the most popular side campaigns because it fucking SLAPS
Aabria is back as GM, bringing poetry and grace to the dome and ahhhh (like she literally recites poetry but also the episode introductions are just straight up poetic
This is the season of romance and brought me to the horrible realization that I like DND actual plays because mostly I like the role playing apparently lolllll
Outfits outfits outfits outfits ahhhhh we love some fantastic outfitsssss
The whole Green Hunter bit is so fucking funny
Anyways moral of the story is D20 side campaigns are fun and you should watch/listen to them

ok ok ok it's star trek update time. last time we watched tng's "liaisons" and ds9's "the circle."
liaisons (tng):
the summary of this one put me off soooo bad but i actually give it an enthusiastic pass because i loved the b plot but conned myself into also liking the a plot. allow me to explain
the b plot of this is of course the fantastic riker e worf e deanna showing the ambassadors a good time on the enterprise. this arc satisfied me from start to finish because it started with riker telling worf he looked good in a dress and finished with worf beating that annoying guy's face in, and in the middle there was also a poker game and whatever the FUCJ was happening in their little meeting room which was extremely fun and flirty
i have not forgotten btw that worf e deanna is supposed to happen in s7. im so sorry the actors hated it but rn it is Fueling me. bring it on.
the a plot is more complicated and the summary of this plot is what initially put me off
like, of Course it's picard and a woman. again.
here's what i didn't know: one, this woman was batshit insane and not to be trusted, and 2, she wasn't real but a fake roleplay character made by this alien. who is a man
THAT MEANS. NOT ONLY DID PICARD FINALLY GET HIS OWN CLOSE ENOUNTER
BUT IT WAS WITH A MAN
picard has canonically kissed a man. or um been kissed by one i guess
and all of that would have been just borderline and barely ekeing out with a pass EXCEPT
i had the thought near the end of this episode: q would be absolutely SICK
as we know. the funniest thing about q and indeed perhaps his only redeeming factor. is how bad he wants to fuck sir patrick stewart. which gets ONLY FUNNIER the more that sir patrick stewart is like, i would fuck literally anyone else in the galaxy first
and now here picard is, having liplocked with another guy, and he STILL hasn't fucked q. i spent so long giggling about this that i simply must give the episode a passing grade
also, i would like to note i figured out they were the same person before the episode told us. i am JUST that good
the circle (ds9):
KIRA MY BELOVED.....................................
absolutely tickled to pieces with the ensemble scene at the opening. first we had this nice little prolonged kira and odo moment 😍 which was so wonderful because of their like general dynamic and history being hinted at and then EVERY SINGLE MEMBER OF THE CAST SAVE SISKO got their sitcom intro. it was the most beautiful thing i've ever seen. they were like, you simply cannot be dismissing major kira unfairly. so true. once again it is so cathartic to see them rallying around her whether they're federation or not. literally treating her really niceys
AND SISKO! his little scene with her in the garden down on the planet...wah. he's literally constantly trying to get her back. his support even when she's no longer technically working for him...EVERYBODY treats her really niceys
um except that vedek guy...idk whether he's on the level or not and i DID NOT like whatever sexy stuff was going on in that orb vision. putting aside the hilarious reality of orbs in general for a second are the prophets saying she has to fuck that guy? not my beautiful queen.
um and also except the circle. i didnt actually see the plot twist coming this time about that minister guy being in on it which is very fun. also i'm sooo glad they staged a speedy rescue
ODO THE RAT! i love when he turns into stuff
also odo blackmailing quark into being his deputy lol i LOOOOVE what they have it's SO funny
anyway i hope vedek winn chokes on her oatmeal when she finds out the cardassians are funding her little r*n d*santis campaigns. i thought that was a fun plot twist if not very surprising ultimately like of COURSE they are. it's crazy how relevant some of this still is
and on a final note, i like that sisko has chosen to Rules Lawyer his way into disobeying the prime directive because it is the right thing to do here. GOOD FOR HIM!
tonight: tng's "interface" and ds9's "the siege," finally concluding this little three-parter.

Clone Wars - Supply Lines
yes it took me like two months to continue my rewatch don't look at me.
I always forget that they literally named this Jedi a soundalike of "I'm gonna die." I don't know if Ima Gun Di got that name on purpose but still. On the nose much.
Also CHAM. There really is something special about being able to follow the Syndulla family through the years across so many different series. Meet Cham as a fairly young man here in The Clone Wars, meet Hera as a little girl in The Bad Batch, follow along with her through Rebels and Ahsoka. Obviously they're not the only lineage we follow this way but for some reason they do stick out to me and it's something I really like to see.
That said. Where is Keeli. I need to see that boy NOW.
"You are a more experienced diplomat than the representative from Naboo that is already there" god fucking bless. I love that Bail's immediate response to this is UM? SENATOR AMIDALA IS FANTASTIC? And then we get Obi-Wan's hilarious delivery of 'Representative bINKS accompanied the shipment."
Trading off between Jar Jar shenanigans and what I recall to be one of the more upsetting death scenes in the series is certainly a choice. One I don't disapprove of because shenanigans are a relief from seeing my beloved boy Keeli die but still a choice.
Love that Bail's method of diplomacy though is basically just. Politely houldering his way through the Toydarians that say he can't go inside. Actually he CAN go in there and he will, it won't take a minute.
I also quite like the Toydarian king, this episode honestly has a lot of one off and minor recurring characters I like. Keeli still the most though (and he's FINALLY SHOWN UP) so it's great that he's Totally Fine™ and definitely not going to die horribly at the end of the episode.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like why give us someone THIS pretty with THAT nice of a helmet and then take him away from us?
Tumblr media
Also he wins for coolest hair.
Master Di's 'turn the whole ship into a bomb' plan is fantastically batshit BTW. Of course it works for what he wants but I love when the first step of the plan is 'okay we need to turn our one source of transport into a GIANT BOMB.'
He also gets a banger follow up line to Gobi with "We counted on Republic assistance, and it didn't come. War turns promises into hopes. I wish it wasn't so. Tell him."
I just actually like Ima Gun Di a lot, which is to put it lightly Unfortunate.
Jar Jar's conceptual work of art that includes stealing all of the dishes and throwing food on the floor in preparation is. Regrettably extremely funny to me. Saving the mission with improv is a plot point that I will NEVER grow tired of.
And then back to the agonies. Master Di's reaction to seeing Keeli fall and then him getting back up while they briefly fight back to back with the music, and him living just long enough to know that their sacrifice mattered this is an absolutely brutally done scene and yes I might be tearing up what of it ;__;
