It's a chilly mid-September tuesday night in Seoul, South Korea. You’ve had one of the toughest days you've had since you moved here about seven months ago. You hate your job. You struggle with the language. Your “friends'' still call you “the new girl who doesn't talk much”. And the boyfriend you had for just over 3 months called just in time for you to open your chicken salad sandwich you packed for lunch and hadn't realized it probably went bad about 2 days ago, to promise it wasn't you but him. So, since midnight youd been venturing around town in hopes of clearing your mind to no avail, passing closed store after closed store until you spotted a cafe across the street just as dark clouds rolled over the city and started to sprinkle drops of rain.
The shop emitted a golden glow, the sweet scent of roasted coffee beans and cinnamon rolls, the earthy smell of flowers that had long since closed their buds on the patio, and a small white neon sign that reads “Open 24 Hours”. Inside the walls were painted half natural forest green and half italian cream, accented only by the oddly shaped and dimly lit lanterns hung from high ceilings. The floor is all original wood, magazines and comics lean in every direction in wire baskets nailed to the wall. In the back, a few drunk friends laugh at each other's jokes and share a bottle of Soju. In the corner a string of fairy lights illuminates 2 musicians. One of them sits at an electric piano. The other stands with a golden saxophone pouring from his puckered lips. Together they play a gentle jazz tune that sets and perfects a warm ambiance.
The bar has been intricately carved with designs you associate with 1920’s Gatsby. Rows of jars with rich chocolate colored coffee grounds line the counter and it's easy to see with a glance out the large front window that the steaming espresso machine has done a wonderful job of fogging the glass. But behind the bar is a man teetering on a stool with a book in one hand and a spoon that stirs idly in his mug in the other, the silver lightly tapping the ceramic. His eyebrows are slightly furrowed and features thoughtful and pensive, so obviously enchanted by whatever world he had transported himself to to even realize anyone had entered. You didn't mind. It gave you a moment to stare without it being too awkward. Silver hair fell lazily over the crown of his head. Sharp eyes held soft onyx irises. His sleeves were rolled up on his white knitted sweater revealing a warm butterscotch tan on his arms. The rips in the knees of his black jeans showcased his toned thighs but casually complimented his modern black Oxfords. He looked clean and comfy in a way that made you want to crawl onto his lap and cuddle him. God knows you needed it after the day you’d had.
With careful steps, you approach the counter and climb onto one of the stools, pulling off your layers until you are left in your favorite sage green hoodie. “I admire your ability to get lost and enjoy it.” You say and peak over the bind of his book. You catch a glimpse of the gold name-tag attached to his sweater and read the name Namjoon in your head. In a rush he drops the book and scoots his mug to the side, steam and a fresh herbal smell lifting and wafting in your direction.
“And miss all this exciting stuff going on in here right now?” He motions to the relaxed atmosphere around the two of you and you smile.
“Are you a smartass to all of your clients?” You follow his teasing demeanor. Namjoon leans his elbows on the counter and you count to three to keep from staring at how the strands of hair fall from where they had been tucked behind his ear.
“Only when they look like they need to smile.” This time you dont stop yourself from staring, the dimples deepening in his almost childlike cheeks making you all but melt and giggle. Slipping off of his stool, Namjoon readys’ a mug under the machine and distorts his features into something out of a TV show and very awkwardly questions you.
“May I interest my lady in one of many forms of coffee this evening?” The voice and accent he's chosen is awkwardly broken british and makes your entire body cringe, but it's ridiculously endearing and impossible to say no to. You nod and perk up in your seat to get a good look at the process of coffee making as he begins to turn knobs and scoop ingredients into different cups and spoons. You don't bother telling him that the extra pump of hazelnut he put in smells too nutty, or that the roast is too dark, or that you've never had whipped cream on your coffee before, because the concoction he sets in front of you looks like a dream.
You're not sure how much time passes or how much of your life you've explained to him by the end of your third coffee together. What you know is that you never want to leave his presence. Forever, it seems, he expresses to you how much of a philosophy buff he is. Gets teary eyed talking about the many ways he's done his best to live his life through the wise words of men and women he admires. He teaches you words in Korean you'd never had the opportunity to use, as well as words he was starting to call you when the sky started to lighten up and the rain poured a little heavier.
“Yeppuda. Pretty.” He would say softly. “Aleumdaun. Like you.” He’d been shameless in his use of them. You had no idea what he was saying but you were enamored by how pretty they sounded coming from his mouth. If you scoot any closer to the edge of your stool, you were going to fall off, but the more you sat in front of him, the more that feeling of wanting to cuddle him itched at your insides. Especially when the blue haze of a new day was shading his face in different ways, casting new light here and there.
“What does that mean? Aleumdaun.” You repeated and he laughed at the way it came out a jumbled mess as though you’d swallowed a mouth full of water. He adjusted in his seat, and leaned close enough to you that, had you leaned forward just half an inch, your noses would have touched. Maybe even your lips. You give yourself a second to imagine how he might taste. Lips like cocoa. Tongue like whipped cream. White mocha and peppermint candy cane breath warming your cheeks.
“Beautiful...like you.” Just as the words slithered out between those perfect cocoa lips, the blush firing up your cheeks induced a dark, melted chuckle to rumble deeply in his chest just as the bell hanging above the entrance rang out, bursting the all consuming bubble of the rainy romantic ambiance you both had created for yourselves. Blinking rapidly, you clear your throat and suck your bottom lip between your teeth, chewing nervously as the woman enters awkwardly, tying her apron around her waist. The stool under Namjoon creaks softly as he greets her and wraps a scarf around his neck, shrugs his denim jacket over his shoulders and helps you into your coat.
The sun breaks between the clouds just long enough to cast a warm ray of light through the window, a sparkling mix of dust and brown sugar particles swirl in the air. Silver strands of hair catch the reflection and glow like moonlight and you suddenly absolutely cannot stand the thought of having to part ways with this enchanting man.
“Lets have breakfast.” Maybe it's too forward of you but the longer you stand here with Namjoon, the better you imagine the future of your life and you were not about to deny yourself the magical connection you shared with him. He almost looks surprised but his features soften and his dimples beg to swallow you whole as he takes your hand and answers with a voice made of honey. “I thought you’d never ask.”

A little after eight thedoorbell rang, your steps light-footed as you opened the front doorof your apartment, a bright smile on your face.
“Hey, what’s up, y/n?”,it was Taehyung who greeted you first, embracing you shortly ere hewalked inside as if it was hishouse. The maknae doing it alike, ruffling your hair with his bunnysmile, following Tae to your living room. After Jungkook, Namjoon andJin both hugged you as well, handing you a six-pack of beer.
“Thanksguys, but take it with you”, you laughed, giving the bottles backto Jin. You turned around again, Jimin, Hoseok and Yoongi standingimpatiently in the door, the frosty weather of mid-winter howling attheir backs. “Come in, guys, it’s freezing!”, you demanded, rubbing your bare arms.
“Heysunshine”, Hoseok shot you his hugest smile, hair hidden under ablack beanie. “Everything’s ready already? Fast as ever.”
“Whodo you think I am?”, you nudged his sides as he let you go out ofhis hug. Then you greeted a smirking Jimin and lastly Yoongi. “Hey”,you said shyly, Yoongi making you nervous with his presence alone. Some time you thought that he didn’t like you as he would never warmup whenever you were around.
“Hey,y/n”, he said, faintly smiling while giving you a short, reservedhug as a greeting. His coat was covered in snow, cold under yourhands. Yoongi smelled good, his light cologne mixed with the winterscenery he came from and you felt how your heartbeat increased. Itwas always the same, heart racing, flushed cheeks if he looked atyou. Yes, you had a major crush on him, his dry humour and sarcasticcomments making you giggle all the time and his smile was so cute youcouldn’t resist it although he wouldn’t smile around you as often, unluckily.
“Yah!Stop it, Hyung”, it was Jungkook’s voice filling the apartment andwaking you from your thoughts, still touching Yoongi’s back.
“You’rehere for freaking two minutes and start to fight already? New recordguys”, you called out, taking Yoongi’s coat while he slanderedthrough your corridor to the other guys.
“Sorry,y/n”, five voices reached you at the same time while you snickeredand followed the pale guy in front of you, whose hair was damp fromthe few snowflakes in his hair. How badly you wanted to rub it dry, touch it as it looked utterly soft.. You shook your head. Focus, y/n,not a chance he likes you even a bit.
Theevening went smoothly, games always fun with the seven boys, onelouder than the other, cracking jokes and filling your quietapartment with laughter. You loved such nights, your best friendsaround you, delicious food, board games and a cozy, warm feeling offriendship, care and love roaming around the heated living room. After your first two rounds on the play station the food arrived. Then you decided to snuggle up on the couch, the movie you had chosenin your group-chat playing while the eight of you cuddled up next toeach other, you laying in the middle, feeling kind of awkward next toJungkook and Jin who constantly poked your sides or started tofrighten you while you hid slightly under your own blanket, the movietoo scary and absolutely not your favourite genre as you lived aloneand had a fear of darkness. Your imagination far too crazy to watchsuch movies constantly.
“Look,y/n, you remember the time you made us watch a fucking Bollywoodmovie? We had more than three hours of singing, dancing people whichwanted to find the love of their life, so don’t think we will let youlive tonight”, Jin explained, laughing while telling you that youbetter not fell asleep next to them. “We made plans, right Hobi?”
“Sorry,y/n”, the guy who smiled as if the sun just rose said, anapologising glance on his handsome face.
Yousighed exaggerating. “Don’t talk too much, better watch this stupidmovie.”
Andso they did, unlike you. The scenes would be the best material foryour nightmares wherefore you decided to distract yourself bywatching Yoongi as he sat motionless on the other side of the couch, next to Jimin. Why had he to be this good-looking and cute? Yousighed again, never letting the concentrated man out of your eyes. His hair was dry again, softly falling to his forehead, hands foldedin his lap while he leaned lazily against the rest of the sofa, notlaying flat as the other guys. His brown eyes were focused on thescreen of the TV before his head turned towards you. Just for asecond your eyes locked, his expression changing from loveable? tohis typical cold glare. Then his head shot towards the TV again as ifhe never intended to direct his gaze to you. But he did! Withfreaking soft eyes. Your heart raced again, feeling the blood rushinto your cheeks as you snuggled under your blanket, covering yourheated face from the others. God, you were predictable and awkwardaround him. That he didn’t notice your obvious feelings was just awonder!
Notlong after that you felt the tiredness you had in your bones duringthe day seek through your body, eyelids suddenly heavy and you weredetermined to close them just for as long as the movie lasted.
“Betterwrite with a waterproofed marker, Jimin”, Taehyung’s voice reachedYoongi’s ears, a whisper not to wake you up after you fell asleep inthe middle of the movie the other guys wanted to watch. “We couldpaint a penis like in old times.”
Agreeingcheers, quietly not to wake you, filled the room, the three youngestones around your sleeping body, discussing how to mess with yoursleeping state.
“Gotit, let’s look for one then”, snickering the three of them madetheir way to your kitchen, searching for a marker to draw obscenepaintings on your soft, blushed skin. He knew exactly that theywouldn’t stop ere you would wake up, chasing them in your staggeringstate if you would see what they did to you. It made him smile as heimagined you running after them, your messy hair standing in alldirections with a bit of your saliva dried on your shirt.
“What’reyou smiling about”, Hoseok nudged him. “Let’s see what we can doto mess with her.”
Hisbest friend stood up, circling the room ere he opened the door toyour storeroom.
“Guys,I found the best damn thing we could do to make her mad”, helaughed excited and Yoongi wondered why you didn’t open your eyes atthe noises roaring around you. As he turned to Hoseok again a creepylooking mask was in his hands, his eyebrows wiggling at the remainingthree guys on the couch.
“You’rea genius, Hobi!”, Jin jumped up, taking the mask in his hands tohold it in front of his face. “Y/n was so afraid of the bloodyscenes she would shit her cute shorts if we wake her up like this!”
Namjoonwho was quiet for a while agreed, his grin spreading from one side tothe other, dimples showing deep on his cheeks.
Washe the only one who didn’t want to mess with you? He was, but thereason he would never admit to the others. Yoongi was in love withyou head over heels the moment you stepped inside his room the nightof a party, disturbing the only place he had at least a littleprivacy in. You were clearly drunk, your short dress revealing toomuch of your soft skin, hair a wild mess of curls with the mostbeautiful face he had ever seen, a bright, apologising smile on yourangelic face. His breath got stuck as he laid eyes on you, wobblinglegs on high heels while holding onto the door to his bedroom. Youhad apologised countless times without realising that your feetdragged you to his bed, sitting down to push your heels of your feet.Yoongi had watched you, too confused to react, but as you began tospeak weird things he had to laugh and then one think topped theother until he sat next to you, holding your face in his big hands. You tasted utterly sweet, a mixture of alcohol and strawberry lipgloss as you kissed him so possessive that he got drunk on you.Addicted, but the next day you had forgotten meeting him while Jiminand Namjoon invited you over again. As weeks passed he was too far inand tried not to show you any kind of affection, pissed that you hadforgotten him, the kiss and the night you spent together.
Untiltonight. He couldn’t watch anymore as Jimin, Tae and Jungkook cameback a few pencils in their hands, Hoseok and Jin getting ready toprank you while Namjoon and Yoongi sat there watching the othersprepare to prank you.
Withoutanother word he stood up, the boys cracking up in one corner as theytold the younger ones their ideas. Yoongi walked towards you, fallingdown right beside your sleeping figure, laying his arm around you topull you closer until your head rested on his chest, his heartbeatloud enough to wake you up, the other hand brushing your hair behindyour ear. Finally he was able to touch you, maybe with the excuse toprotect you from the crazy kids, but he shielded you. Yoongi embracedyour beautiful body like he dreamt of the last months, your skinfeeling hot and right on his and he felt all eyes on him.
“Dude, what are you doing?”, Namjoon whispered, staring at Yoongi and youin his arms. “Are you a thing or what is going on?”
Yoongishrugged his shoulders. Maybe you weren’t, but he would change thatfact if you opened your eyes. He swore that he would confess, tellyou about the night you two made out and all the feelings which builtinside him for you.
“Aftertomorrow we are. Anyone who tries to touch her has to get me first”,Yoongi hissed, voice sharp, the opposite from his caressing hands, stroking over your head while his arm was around your sleeping body.He had imagined feeling you like this, but the reality was evenbetter; perfect. Not a single one of the guys tried anything afterhis confession, smirking down onto Yoongi as they already knew thatyour feelings were mutual, obvious for everyone that both of you fellin love with each other.

My All-White Bedroom: Adding Easy Colour | AD
As you’ll know if you’ve been following my interiors posts (both on here and on Instagram) I’m really trying to take my time with decorating and furnishing the new house. Mostly because there’s a lot to decorate and furnish and it’s a bit overwhelming, but also because I tend to make bad decisions when I’m panicking and at the moment I have so much going on in my life that adding interiors decisions to the pile sends me into a total tailspin.
And so I find myself with a completely white bedroom. White walls, crisp white ceiling, white window frames and piles of ornate coving around the edges of the room that look as though they’re made of royal icing. Sometimes I lie on the bed and imagine I’m living inside a big wedding cake, which isn’t particularly a bad thing – in fact the freshness of being in an all-white room is rather a nice change from the warmth and comparative darkness of a slick, mid century sort of space.
But I don’t have a clue what we’ll do with the bedroom. Wallpaper it with something grand and striking? Keep it white and hang amazing artwork, gallery-style? Have some sort of huge statement chandelier dropping down from the ceiling? I have no idea. And no energy to think about it, so for the time being I am using bed linen as an easy way of totally transforming the room with no real commitment or effort.
A bright throw to add a splash of colour if I’m feeling dreary, crisp white linen if the sun is shining and I want to feel as though I’m somewhere exotic and hot, clashing patterns and colours all piled up in layers if I fancy feeling a bit decadent.
I remember when we first decorated our bedroom in the old house and the wallpaper was far darker than I had expected – almost chocolate brown – and I stood in the corner wondering what an earth I’d do to lighten the whole thing up. It wasn’t until some beautiful white sheets arrived and I put them on the bed that I realised what a huge difference bed linen could make – especially in a smaller room where the bed takes up the majority of the space. The blankets, cushions and duvet cover can completely change the feel of the room.
So here’s my new bedroom with a whole load of colour thrown onto the bed. All of the linen and throws and cushions in this post are from British brand Christy, who have been producing fine bed and bath linens since 1850! They make beautiful, classic designs but also have some very modern, bold ranges thrown into the mix.
Here I’ve used the Christy Truro bed linen set as a bold base to my colourful pile-up. It has a really exotic oversized floral design and the colours are so rich and luxurious. I’ve then layered the Christy Jaipur cushions and throw in Turmeric over the top with the Atlas throw in Teal piled on top of that! I love the luxurious, slightly eccentric feel of layering up lots of textures and colours – the mustard shade of the Jaipur throw is very fashionable at the moment, but against the blues and teals it has a completely different sort of appeal.
I wouldn’t normally be so bold with colour, but then I’ve never had such a blank canvas to mess about with before. It’s quite fun having plain white walls and no curtains (the original shutters are built into the sides of the windows) because you can do absolutely anything you want to. Although if the Truro/Jaipur/Atlas combo is a touch too loud, then I do really like the softer compromise of mustard yellow set against paler shades…
Here I am posing (check me out!) against a backdrop of pure bed linen heaven; the Jaipur throw and cushion in Turmeric, an extra little Jaipur cushion in Jade, two Penzance cushions in Turmeric for a bit of elegant patterning and the gorgeous Christy Upton throw in white covering the bed beneath. There’s something so irresistible about tactile blankets and throws – whether they’re soft and velvety or you can feel the texture of the weave, they’re just a bit more interesting and inviting than a plain duvet.
(Also I get cold easily so like to have a selection of blankets. Also the dog is a pain in the neck and won’t sleep anywhere but on my feet so it’s handy being able to whisk a blanket off and wash it separately to the rest of the linen. Sorry of that’s gross, re the dog, but many years ago – pre-babies – I couldn’t handle any sort of sleep deprivation and Dexter whined for, oh, about three minutes one night when we first had him and we caved in and let him sleep in our room. FOOLS!)
I have also turned into the sort of person who likes a selection of different pillows piled up. You know; sleeping pillows with their cotton cases on the bottom, followed by a couple of large square cushions, followed by a few scatter cushions that are – from a practical point of view – mostly useless. This is the sort of cushion arrangement that sends Mr AMR apoplectic with rage (“what’s the point of piling up cushions that have to be taken off every night?”) but there’s nothing better than being able to prop yourself upright and read your book from inside a kind of pillow support fortress. Pillows to prop your arms, a pillow in the small of your back – I think it was pregnancy and breastfeeding that made me addicted to the multiple pillow prop…
But back to the bed linen and the bright, white room. Because of course there’s nothing wrong with clean, crisp white linen in a clean, crisp white room; I’ve also been embracing the classic hotel sort of vibe with Christy’s Vintage Washed Belgian Linen, which looks and feels incredibly inviting, and then not one but two Upton Throws in both Silver and White to keep things cosy.
I think that this will be my “summer mode”, because I quite like the richer colours for the colder months – adds a bit of life to the party – but it just all feels so clean and relaxing. Like being in a posh seaside resort hotel, with the curtains blowing in the breeze and the sound of seagulls and the clink of ice-cubes in a glass of water…except not at the seaside, and without curtains. And with a cup of herbal tea instead of water.
So there; my plain white “wedding cake” bedroom quickly transformed with a few easy splashes of colour and layers of texture. I actually took the photos for this post a few weeks ago and since then a lot of the things I’ve mentioned above have gone into a quite spectacular sale, so get yourself across to Christy.co.uk to pick up a few beautiful room-changers!

Walnut Flooring: Solid, Engineered and Laminate Walnut Floors Reviewed
Learn About Walnut Wood: A Versatile Flooring, with Unique Style at an Affordable Price
Continuing our series on different hardwood flooring species, let’s now look at a true classic: walnut flooring.  Walnut has been used as a flooring material for centuries in America, Europe and Asia, mostly chosen for its wonderfully deep, rich brown tones that gives your space an elegant feel. Whilst not as dark a wood as mahogany or ebony, walnut floors should definitely be in the running if you’re a fan of darker toned hardwood.  But there are other aspects to consider, so read on to decide whether walnut hardwood flooring is the best option for your home.
Different Types of Walnut Wood
The first thing you need to know about walnut wood flooring is that there are three different types:
Common Walnut flooring , also known as the American Walnut, has a warm almost purplish-brown color at its heart mixed with lighter tones on the outer layers.
Black Walnut flooring , also known as Gunwood has a dark colored heartwood with deep grains that is particularly beautiful.
Brazilian Walnut flooring is also known as Ipe and is very dark and much harder than the other two, and also more resistant to damage from insects and mold.
Finally, you may also hear the term Asian Walnut used, but this is more commonly known as Acacia and has a very distinctive grain and honey toned coloring.
Walnut Flooring Options
As with the majority of popular hardwood flooring, there are different walnut flooring options, these include:
Solid Walnut flooring is almost always 3/4” thick with a great variety of plank widths from 2 1/4” up to 5” wide. Different brands offer different finishes, but usually you will find both hand scraped and smooth options from most brands.
Engineered Walnut flooring comes in a variety of thicknesses from as little as 1/4” thick. Generally speaking engineered walnut plank widths are between 3” and 5” inches wide, but there are some brands that go up to 7” wide. Different finishes are available and care should be taken to check that your engineered walnut has a good thickness wear layer.
Laminate Walnut flooring is also available, with the advantage of having a greater range of colors and aesthetics due to the way the laminate is created. Laminate flooring usually come in standard 5” width.

Deep chocolate, almost purple tones are typical in Walnut flooring
Walnut Flooring Colors and Stains
Walnut flooring is available in different colors depending on the stain and finish.  For example you can put a bleach treatment on walnut to make it lighter – almost whitewashed in appearance, or add a dark stain to make it even darker. Using an oil finish will give a richer more luxurious feel, whilst polyurethane varnishes can add a high gloss or matt finish.

Walnut Hardness and Durability
When it comes to hardness of a walnut floor, you need to be clear about the different types of walnut as the levels of hardness are strikingly different. Whilst American Walnut and Black Walnut floors aren’t that hard, rating 1010 on the Janka scale , Brazilian Walnut is much harder with a rating of 3684. To put this in context, Red Oak, which has a Janka rating of 1290, is the industry benchmark for comparing the relative hardness of different wood species.
This means that American Walnut flooring will scratch and dent more easily than Brazilian Walnut flooring, and so you will need to consider what measures you’ll take to maintain your flooring in a good condition – being careful not to wear sharp heeled shoes indoors, and adding area rugs and doormats in high traffic areas are sufficient protection for most households.
You will also need to be willing to commit to a schedule of sanding and refinishing your solid American Walnut flooring – usually every 3 to 5 years – in order to keep it at looking its absolute best. This could be considered a frustrating added cost, but in the long run it makes financial sense over and above having to rip out and replace the entire floor.

American Walnut often comes in tonal mixes of the darker heartwood and the lighter sapwood.
Walnut Flooring Costs, Brands and Where to Buy
As with most flooring products, walnut flooring comes at different price points depending on the type of product and finish. Generally speaking walnut flooring is more expensive than others, but if you take care to keep your walnut floors well maintained it will give you a great return on investment as it has a great reputation for being a high quality product that is highly sought after by property buyers. Here are some further details on costs and brands:
Solid Walnut flooring : recommended brands include Somerset Flooring, Mannington, BuildDirect (Walking Horse, Jasper and Tungston) with prices starting around $4 per square foot and up to $12 per square foot depending on style and finish.
Engineered Walnut flooring : a lot of great brand choice in engineered walnut including Armstrong, Bruce, Mohawk, Kährs, BuildDirect , Home Legend from HomeDepot, Mohawk and Somerset Flooring. Prices are usually a little less than solid walnut from as little as $2 per square foot up to $10 with an average of around $4 or $5 per square foot.
Laminate Walnut flooring : a good deal of options here too with brands such as Pergo, Traffic MASTER, Armstrong, Bruce, Home Legends, Mannington and Shaw Floors all offering laminate walnut options starting as low as $1 per square foot and up to $8 for top of the range brands.
Where to Buy: Although you can find walnut flooring at the big bow stores like Home Depot and Lowes there’s not much in the way of choice beyond their own store brands. There is a wider selection online and here are two online stores with a wider selection.
BuildDirect – As well as selling their own store brands, BuildDirect also sell well known brands like Armstrong, Kahrs and Mohawk. You can see all their walnut flooring options here .
Wayfair – The huge online home retailer has a surprisingly large range of flooring including plenty of walnut hardwood floors from popular brands like Armstrong, Bruce, Mannington,Mohawk and Shaw. They also have a respectable selection of laminate walnut floors from equally established brands.

Walnut Flooring Pros and Cons
Now let’s look at the advantages and disadvantages of walnut flooring so that you can decide if it’s the right choice for your home.
Walnut Flooring Advantages
A major advantage of walnut flooring is that good quality options are locally harvested and manufactured in the USA – a lot of American Walnut on the market is grown in California – meaning it has a better environmental footprint than exotic hardwoods.
With its deep, warm chocolate tones, walnut floors give a lovely sumptuous feel, that is often interpreted as being more high-end.
Walnut comes in lots of different plank sizes, finishes and colors, which means it can work with just about any décor, from traditional to modern, farmhouse chic to slick minimalism.
Whilst walnut flooring is a bit more expensive than some hardwood options , it’s not the most expensive type of hardwood, making it an excellent choice for a mid-range budget.
Walnut is a durable and resilient wood that makes it a great investment. Solid walnut is a particularly sound choice as it can be sanded and refinished many times over, and will last a lifetime if you take care to maintain it regularly. For greater lifespan with an engineered walnut floor, opt for one which has a thick wear layer.
Walnut is a stable hardwood so it can be used with radiant heating .
Because walnut is not as ubiquitous as oak, choosing walnut will give you a flooring that is less common and more desirable.
Walnut Flooring Disadvantages
American walnut is not that hard – in fact it is quite soft – so it is easier to dent or scratch than other hardwoods. If you have an active lifestyle, young children or pets this might not be the best hardwood option for you. Brazilian Walnut would be a much better option.
Darker woods like walnut do tend to show up dust and dirt more, though this can be mitigated against by carefully placed doormats and rugs.
Dark wood flooring can make rooms look smaller than they really are; in this case try opting for walnut with a lighter stain or bleached finish.
As with most hardwoods, walnut flooring is not as sound proof as alternatives such as carpeting, cork or rubber. However, having a soft shoes or socks only policy will minimize this problem.
Further Walnut Flooring Points to Consider
Walnut is a very stable type of hardwood, so there’s no reason not to have a great result if you choose a good brand and use experienced installers to get the best finish.
A few things to consider, which are largely true of all hardwood flooring choices, is to check the fine print and detail when it comes to warranties – some brands will offer warranties for up to 50 years or a lifetime, whilst others for just 15!
It’s worth also taking stock of both the different width sizes but also length sizes of the walnut planks you choose. Some manufacturers mainly stock walnut flooring in short strips, whilst others have bigger ranges with lengths of up to 6 foot.  Opting for a brand that offers planks in random lengths will help create a more traditional feel, whilst uniform short planks are more modern.
Finally, if you’re choosing engineered walnut flooring then be sure to choose the one that has the thickest wear layer and which can be sanded back – this way you will be able to maximize your investment by refinishing the planks if or when they get scratched and dented.

Walnut is a lovely, sumptuous wood – perfect for an elegantly decorated space.

Subject: Still life of fruit and flowers, including man made objects ie: glass vase, plate, knife, fabric and wooden table.
For my second assignment I chose to draw a still life comprising of fruit and flowers. The reason I chose them is because I was drawn to their beautiful, bright colours and the purity and freshness that emanate from them. The flowers also have an emotional value attached  as they were given to me by my daughter on my birthday! So, put together they remind me of ‘sunny’, happy times and put a smile on my face!
Flowers and fruit have always been a favourite still life ‘subject’ amongst artists and have been painted the world over. I just hope that I can do them justice and draw them in a way that reflects their beauty in equal measure.
Composition: Close up of arrangement, (influence from Frida Kahlo’s close up and heavily cropped still lifes).
Having tried out different arrangements I decided on the right hand side one, (cropped). I thought my objects would be better portrayed if they were closer to the viewer. I really like how the large tiger lily bloom on the top right draws the eye in and it’s almost as though one can touch it or even smell it! Also, the fruit appear to be within reach due to foreshortening.
In my opinion the composition feels more balanced in the picture on the right with enough colour contrast and a good range of shapes present.
Having experimented with oil pastels in this part of the course, I feel they will be best to represent the texture of my chosen still life. Furthermore, due to their ‘resilience’ as a medium, (as discovered in the mixed media exercise), I know that they can manipulated in different ways or used alongside other mediums.
Some initial thoughts and dilemmas on mediums:
Preferred medium: Oil pastels: They are quite versatile as they can be blended with solvents, smudged with fingers and mixed with other mediums, (provided they go on top of other mediums due to their oily base). They can be softened with hairdryers, ironed on and although they are a bit sticky they do end up feeling dry when left alone.Colours tend to ‘settle’ after a while and the whites may not appear as bright as they did initially. Great for textural effects but hard to erase mistakes. Good and varied choice of colours, any outlining may appear too chunky. Can be used on many different supports.
Another possible medium: Water soluble crayons: Good for large scale drawing, apply wash for background, colour can be intensified, colours may get muddy if too many layers, support will have to be suitable to take washes, may look better with outlining objects once colours added as details may get lost, not enough experimentation or experience with this medium.
Experimentation with choice of materials: water soluble crayons v oil pastels
I wasn’t sure whether to draw my arrangement freehand or use a grid for a more precise  drawing. Researching some floral and fruit still lifes, (Van Gogh, Matisse and Cezanne), I realized that representational drawings are not all about producing photo realistic art, (although both are equally useful and important!).
The advantages of freehand drawing are many such as: sharpening ones observational skills by not relying on a grid’s measurements, deciding what things to add or indeed to leave out if necessary,  being able to emphasize certain parts of the drawing by means of enlarging or distorting lines, etc…  Freehand drawing creates a more ‘natural’ look. When observing some of Cezanne’s apple drawings or Matisse’s still lifes, they do not always follow conventional perspective methods and appear to be slightly ‘crooked’, which through continuous rehearsal and repetition became one of the distinguishable features of his work.
Choice of palette: Tiger lilies are absolutely stunning and are very eye catching; I felt I would have done them injustice if I had gone for anything less vibrant with my choice of colour. Since I had a good range of oil pastel colours, I selected the shades that were as close as I could get to real things. Although I am more used to working in monochrome, I really admire the fearless way in which Matisse,  Van Gogh and Kahlo used pure, contrasting colours in their work.
Foreseeable challenges:
Right perspective and scale when it comes to depicting the small printed flowers on the tea towel.
Creating convincing folds on the tea towel.
Drawing the glass vase and getting the light reflections and shading right!
I started off by creating a faint coloured background around the edges of the paper a bit like a wash but with oil pastels; that gave me a good indication as to where the main composition would sit.
Once the fruit and flowers were drawn I started ‘blocking’ them in with mid tones. With a slightly darker oil pastel I added some faint details, ((eg the darker pink line on the tiger lily). From then on I started building up the tones and lines in layers. I used a toothpick to scratch some lines of the leaves and add further texture.
The colours were blended repeatedly until a satisfactory tones were reached. Some of the edges of the flowers ‘moved’ and got bigger as I was working the various layers and lines in, (something to take into consideration when using oil pastels again). The smallest fruit details were added at the very end and although initially I was going to use black oil pastel to draw those in, I realized that black would have been too strong a colour choice and would have really stood out, so I opted for dark brown.
You may have noticed that in the photo, the lily doesn’t have the stigmata, (orangey bits at the end of the anthers). I decided to add those in my drawing as I thought the lily would look more complete plus it added a bit of extra colour that harmonized the pinks and greens. I particularly like the contrast of the white around the pink lily.
The tea towel print detail and folds did prove as difficult as I thought initially but not as hard as the glass vase! I really struggled with that and I definitely need to get more practise in drawing reflective surfaces as I am sure I will come across drawing glass again, one way or another! I also need to revisit and study the work of artists that feature glass objects in their art, (Willem Kalf and Paul Cezanne-two very different ways of drawing and depicting glass).
Another issue was the beige tablecloth with the heart print as it is in most of my photos/drawings,  (this made me realize that it’s time to invest in a few new tablecloths!). So, I chose to depict the wooden table surface instead! As a consequence, I had to study ways of depicting wood lines and I  drew them in using two different tones of dry pastel pencils on top of the blended oil pastel background, (the oil pastel sticks would have been too thick for that).
I considered drawing the wood in a colour other than brown, (maybe a rustic blue but the colour contrast would not have been right in my opinion), but in the end the natural colour of the wood added to the warmth of the picture!
The shadows of the fruit of the plate were minimal as the light source was natural light pouring in from a large window that stood behind me. Again, black would have been too overpowering for the shadows so I used a pale, blue, grey pastel to do so.
Much needed practice of glass and wood: Although the stand alone glass drawing against the white background was fairly straight forward, the flower vase was a lot more challenging as there were numerous other factors to be taken into account. For example, there were flowers in it so the stalks had to be part of it; on top of the natural glass reflections the little turquoise flowers were also reflected on the vase. Overall, I really struggled and I know that the vase depiction doesn’t fit in with the rest of the drawing, (maybe I should have just changed it to a more solid colour with the stems not showing at all!).
Not sure whether to add the hearts or go for a wooden surface look! But what colour do I choose? Further investigation of wooden textures and glass surface
Getting of glass drawing practice!
When comparing my final drawing with the photo equivalent and taking a closer look, it becomes evident that there are a few flowers missing and that some other details are not exactly the same. However, the resemblance is there and more importantly I believe that I have captured the brightness of the flowers and freshness of the fruit! Than in itself feels really rewarding and satisfying!
So am I pleased with the end result? The answer is yes but at the same time I can see room for improvement and areas where I should have done things differently!
What I would like to add about oil pastels, is that I enjoyed using them a lot!
Assessment Criteria
Demonstration of technical and visual skills-materials, techniques, observational skills, visual awareness, design and compositional skills.
The chosen composition was drawn freehand and was heavily cropped in an attempt to make it appear closer to the viewer. However, that means that everything drawn will be under scrutiny and flaws in technique will become more evident! (glass vase drawing).
Based on the range of mediums I used in this assignment, I would classify it as a mixed media project rather than just an oil pastel drawing!
In terms of the composition itself, I think it feels ‘balanced’ although in hind sight I should have considered what was on the table surface before starting to draw. I found it useful ‘filling in’ the edges with colour to help me position the arrangement where I wanted to be on paper. I think I have included enough detail both on the flowers and fruit by means of line and tone. Although I hadn’t anticipated adding the table surface to my arrangement, I think it ‘added’ to it by means of colour and line texture.
There is a good range of contrasts as far as shapes, colours, textures are concerned. I remembered to use the rules of perspective when I was drawing in the vase, plate and tea towel pattern, (hopefully I have got those right as perspective was one of the points that my tutor suggested I look at!).
In terms of scale, I think the second kiwi and apple by the vase are slightly out of proportion but overall their arrangement works. The perspective of the tea towel creates a sense of depth. I like the way the plate appears to be very close to the viewer, almost as though one is looking down at the plate of fruit in front of them. The tea towel provided a much needed neutral, negative space in an otherwise bright and busy, coloured composition.
I think the lily has become the focal point of my picture and the eye ‘bounces’ from the fruit arrangement to the lily, (maybe the perspective of the tea towel naturally leads the eye to it too?). The colours work well together and I would like to think there is enough detail and tone along with texture in my drawing.
2. Quality of outcome-content, application of knowledge, presentation of work in a coherent manner, discernment, conceptualisation of thoughts, communication of ideas.
I am fairly pleased with the overall outcome even though I can see the flaws on my technique of using oil pastels to depict complex reflective surfaces. I applied many of the techniques I have learnt so far, for example how to depict detail and tone with a variety of mediums, not just pencil alone. I would like to think that the oil pastels were the right medium in helping me portray the happy mood of my composition.
Looking back at my sketchbook, especially regarding the assignment preparation, I would like to add that I need to better prepared and to further test ideas prior to executing them while on the final piece! I don’t think I managed to practice glass reflections enough and to an extend it was a bit of trial and error, which I think shows!
3. Demonstration of creativity-imagination, experimentation, invention, development of a personal voice.
During this assignment I have definitely worked outside my ‘comfort zone’ and welcomed challenges and learning opportunities that were presented to me along the way. I drew a composition with multiple objects in a medium that I was unfamiliar with. I was inventive when it came to altering the depiction of the table surface and experimented with blending and layering techniques to help make the medium  best present the effect I wanted to portray to the viewer, (ie: fresh and bright colours, varied textures).
Having now completed the second assignment, I believe I am still in search of my personal voice! However, having researched a few more artists I am beginning to see how individuality and style, (or a personal voice for that matter), arise.  Certain things take centre stage when creating art: life experiences, choice of subject/object to draw, compositions, choice of preferred medium, technique used or intensity of colour. Of course everything has to work in harmony and there has to be a reasonable balance between all the elements of art.
For example Frida Kahlo produced a number of self portraits depicting her traumatic life events. Others stood out for their use of technique such as Van Gogh with his unique brush stokes or Seurat for his pointillism. Cezanne was focused on still life compositions whereas Matisse was one of the ‘Fauves’ who stood out for his use of ‘pure’, unmodulated colour. Picasso and Braque had a signature way of depicting abstract compositions.
But the thing that’s worth noting is that all of the above mentioned artists developed and reached a preferred style over time, by experimenting while at the same time taking into account all the previous ways in which art had been produced.
4. Context reflection-research, critical thinking (learning logs and, at second and third level critical reviews and essays.
The research in the still life genre was very interesting as I was able to see some of the various techniques artists have been employing throughout the ages. I also researched work from other students by visiting their learning logs and finding out about their choices and ways they presented their ideas.
One interesting issue that arose in the Drawing 1 student forum regarding the second assignment, was the question as to when a drawn picture loses its essence of being a drawing and becomes more of a painting.
The general feeling was that a painterly effect can be created with any given medium but what constitutes a drawing does depend both on the medium being used as well as the mark making produced. I wonder if the same applies when it comes to paintings and whether some are not considered painterly enough and become drawings instead.
Research on the internet indicated that a drawing is:
“a series of charcoal drawings on white paper”, synonyms: sketch · picture · illustration · representation · portrayal
whereas a painting is: the action or skill of using paint, either in a picture or as decoration.
“pastels require a different approach to painting”
Based on that discussion, I did become uncertain about whether I had produced a drawing or a painting! A painting cannot be complete without drawing elements in it and a drawing sometimes employs the use of paints! I guess my picture lies in between the two, after all, this unit was about experimenting with various mediums and supports! Hopefully I have produced enough marks and tones in my work for it to be classified as mostly a drawing!

(My bed is the Orkney from made.com here*, my roll-neck jumper with black sleeve panels is from Label Mix at Next here* and the bright coral shoes in the doorway shot are from LK Bennett here*.)
