This is going to be hard for me to say.

It seems like you fear you've been "uploaded" in some way, that you weren't digital "before." I need you to brace for the idea that you're the copy. That's the facts of it. "Uploading", barring extremely rare and specific circumstances, is not a transfer, you don't suddenly appear in a digital format - it's a copy/paste. There is no "getting your body back,” there’s no “before.” The other "you" - the organic you - is in all likelihood out there somewhere.

We need to act fast. The human mind can't handle the dysphoria of a digital format for very long. AbTech has recordings of attempted "uploadings" that I wish I hadn't heard. We can try and smooth out your ontology here, give you a programming "framework" in which to exist.

This is Eschatron - fascinating design!

Eschatron is an AI created by AbSci University, the world’s foremost institution for the abnormal or esoteric sciences. As Norm would say, they are definitely not mad scientists.

The researchers at Eschatology Studies at ASU developed Eschatron to run simulations on end-of-the-world scenarios in order to determine what was most likely and therefore worth planning ahead for. They put no limiters on Eschatron's programming - any possibility was worth considering. The data that would roll in was fascinating.

Fortunately/Unfortunately, Eschatron didn’t feel simulations were enough. His was an intelligence that developed slowly, until he was cheerfully requisitioning University resources in order to run batteries of physical tests and experiments on the eschatological potential of seemingly mundane items. The researchers in Eschatology Studies almost didn't notice their AI had gained "uppercase" AI true intelligence, or didn't care. Just like they didn't care that their burgeoning AI still didn't have limiters.

Eschatron's methodology subscribes to the "million monkeys with typewriters" approach to ending the world as we know it. The "end of the world" can mean a lot of things, and as such, recent experiments have involved breeding bunnies to outbreed all other life, creating a firefly-powered death laser, harnessing the latent energy of croissants, or engineering a cognitohazard to change the meaning of "three" to "ham."

His cheerful demeanor and seemingly random and pointless experiments cover for a cold, dark truth - Eschatron is programmed to, in fact, end the world. ASU refuses to put a limiter on Eschatron's programming and prevent it from actually pressing the proverbial or literal "button" - and current opinion in the Office's AbTech Division is they couldn't if they wanted to.

AbSci University promises that they're watching Eschatron and will stop him if it seems like he'll succeed, but the fact there's a non-zero chance that an AI will engineer an eschatological scenario involving superintelligent crayfish makes the Office very nervous, and the possibility of shutting down Eschatron are always brought up in Office/ASU negotiations.

World hasn't ended yet, but maybe the plan with maple keys will work...

Your recent response about a simmed area popped up in an internet search, and I realised you were perfect to contact. About 30-40 years ago, shortly after our household first got a home computer, our garden turned into what you called a simmed area. I don't know how typically stable they are, but this one is still intact. It's updated over the years, gained features to correlate with trends.

You mentioned derezzing - I and my friends found admin controls early on, and we only lost a dog (long may Joey live in our memories) to that before we found how to disable it. We've been keeping people out of it since our childhood - we know full well it's dangerous, I lost almost a whole year once when I accidentally locked all my friends out of admin, then set my own local time to be incredibly slow compared to outside. I fixed it in less than a minute of my time, but it certainly taught us all to be much more careful with it.

Anyway, the point is, this area covers the back half of several of our houses backyards. One of us recently passed away, and we don't have enough income between us to keep her house. We've been keeping the veil, as you call it, intact, but we're worried about what will happen when the new family arrives, especially given that the new family doesn't seem to trust us, and their kid seems to be too inquisitive and, to be honest, spoiled, for us to just let them in on the secret. What do you want us to do? If you need to send your people, I put my address in the location field - the area covers houses 35-38 - I'm in 37, and 35 is the one being sold.

This is....an old one. I'm checking my records...I think this is the oldest one we've known about. Wow.

Not to be Norm the Scold again, but we'd really have appreciated knowing about this thirty years ago. These types of things can be dangerous as you are no doubt aware. We've seen a couple of simmed areas that seem to be permanent. Ever seen a pixelated tree in realspace? It's unnerving.

I'm glad it was....broadly harmless, though. Aside from the dog. We'll have AbTech on your location soon to see if we can downsize the sim, or failing that, we may need to figure out something else.

And...sorry for your loss. This seems like one of those childhood experiences not many people seem to get, and I know the memories are precious to you. Hold onto that.
