The fact people pit science against "experience" is a logical failure because experience is based on selective memory and personal bias. Pinning science as "largely flawed studies" and your personal anecdotes as facts is a laughably stupid take.
#Like don't get me wrong there are people like veterinarians who lack experience and don't know certain things#But them being wrong doesn't mean the science is wrong#It means they don't understand the science#You'd be surprised how many vets spout this very attitude#There's a difference between someone disregarding experience over credentials by default or vice versa and someone being blatantly incorrec#It's important to have some amount of both experience and education from an academic source#That's not to say it has to be higher education rather just an understanding of up to date research#That's why doctors do residencies#Those two things are supposed to be harmonious not mortal enemies#If you think they need to be pitted against eachother maybe it's time to consider why you think that way

so i was messing around chatting to a friend about shakespeare and i have come up with the New Universal Metric For Shakespeare Characters
por exemple, one might argue that Mercutio occupies the bottom right, Cleopatra the top left, Iago and Othello in similarly troubling top-right positions, and Bottom, suitably enough, at the bottom left.
but consider the implications of this as a pattern of literary analysis! muse upon the transformation of Benedick from bottom right, to top left, to the comfortable middle zone! dwell upon how Hamlet zig-zags across the top of this chart throughout the play! consider how, at the end of his life, Mercutio leaves the comfortable Silly Zone (as academics* have christened it) to absolutely storm the top-left quadrant for approximately 10 lines. have an entire academic discussion about where your shakespearean blorbo falls upon this metric.
i've done it lads i've solved literary theory
#*it's me i'm the academics do not ask for credentials#this is entirely divorced from both gender and ethical framing btw. you do not have to be a villain or a guy to be a Guy Causing A Situatio#titania for example? peak bottom-right material.#shakespeare#dumb post#but also unironically i DO wonder if something like this might be a fun teaching tool at secondary level#as a way to make students consider and debate the characters and themes in a play while making it a Dumb Stupid Game#break up into groups and put all the romeo and juliet characters on this chart. i dare u. not least because i can't find a place for Paris

not to be a meanie abt it. but often your “white guy here” prefaces are redundant because it is clear that you are white from the way you talk about race 😬
#it is just also a very weird thing to say in the same tone that you’d use to flash your Academic Credentials#perhaps it is simply not adding anything of value.

The argument against fan fiction that posits that its writers lack imagination, that if fic writers want to write they should create their own characters/worlds, so fundamentally misunderstands why people write fanfic that it feels disingenuous.
Because if that is true, if I am writing fanfic because I do not have the imagination to create stories of my own, then what is my motivation for doing that ??? Do I want to produce something with no regard for anything other than the fact that it will have been produced? Sure, some people might want to do that (cough gen ai springs to mind), but talking to a fic writer for even half a conversation makes it clear, pretty quickly, that often the impetus is an abundance of imagination—we are doing this for the love of the game! Character A who got half a minute of screen time—suddenly they have backstory, a web of other relationships, maybe a new pivotal role in another story’s plot. Character B, a character I identify with perhaps, suddenly has a rich inner life and gets to live outside the stereotypes of the narrative!
I do not care if you like fanfic or not, I don’t care if you write it or not. Some of it’s real bad! Some of it is just erotica (different discussion, but obviously not a bad thing)! Some of it is written by people who just want a hobby, who just want a way to connect with a community, or maybe who write their own original works too! But it pisses me off when I see it treated like there couldn’t possibly be any merit to it.
Hate to tell you this, but if we define fan fic as the adaptation or transformation of a work done by fans? You’d be hard pressed to avoid it in today’s media landscape !!!
#hj yaps#more like hj rants#fanfiction#writing#people pissing me off again#if you need fucking credentials I have written academic articles and had short fiction published and I’m not even that strong a writer !!!#my fanfic homies impress me constantly

Hi, hope you are enjoying your weekend! Do you think it's possible that Lucullus was friends with one of Crassus' old brothers before they died? They seem close enough in age for that to have been a possibility...
ohhhh this is a great question, lemme check a map and get back to you on this. I need to connect some geographic and family political alliance dots
#my gut instinct says unlikely based on how the branches of politics were laid out but as with everything involving politicians#and their families: they for sure knew of each other At Least#but it feels unlikely to me esp if Lucullus did serve in the Social War since#the general thought seems to be that one of Crassus’ older brothers died in the previously mentioned Social War#hmm. much to think about#ask tag#also crassus and his brothers likely spent time in Spain growing up. so there’s also geography to consider#where are the Crassus enjoyers who have academic credentials. do you guys want to weigh in

The problem, Elia reflected between tight and gasping breaths, was that she never took enough time for herself. She just kept saying “yes” to people when she really ought to be saying “no.” It was that damned empathy of hers. Her father always said it was her curse. Elia could take one look in someone's pleading face and find herself agreeing to grade papers over her birthday, run a three-hour errand, babysit overnight, or — to give the most recent example — agree to steal a priceless amulet from the bedroom of Lord Cathryn during his inaugural ball.
The theft, of course, had happened without a hitch. The problem — and reason she was now fleeing for her life — had come after. The amulet, one she had been assured was merely a mundane family keepsake stolen during the Meruvian War, contained an elemental. She had not prepared for a thrice-cursed storm elemental.
Elia leapt over the low wall marking the furthest edge of Lord Cathryn’s estate. Here, old forest grew over and around the wall transforming it from a sign of the Cathryn family’s prowess to a harbinger of their hubristic demise. A demise now most assuredly come given the wreckage behind her. Crouched against the mossy stone and hidden in the shadows of ancient trees, Elia attempted to breathe. The effort was rather more bothersome than she would have liked. Her quiet life in the academy had made her soft.
Beyond the wall, a storm howled. The elemental made no distinction among people. As the holder of the amulet, she was as culpable as those who had imprisoned and used it. Explanations and reason did not matter. Elia pressed her forehead against the cool stone wall as her mind raced. She could neither run nor hide forever. The elemental would catch her. And, when it did, the crater it had made of Cathryn Hall would seem a mercy.
She had only one move to make. Gods help her; she almost preferred death.
Elia bit the edge of her thumb until it bled. She’d bought every protection spell she could find to ensure she never bled. Even her monthlies were only a memory. No blade nor stone nor living nor nonliving thing could harm her. Except herself.
A scarlet bead bubbled at the base of her nail. The tiny drop both saved and damned her.
Her betrothed was coming.
The betrothal then, much like her actions now, had been an act of desperation. Back then it had been the rather tricky matter of a long-lost pearl, a grief-mad mage, a demonic sea-lord, and a blood fae. Between the mage intent on using her to resurrect his lost love and a sea-lord claiming her as his pet to deny the mage his reunion, an alliance with the blood fae had seemed the best escape. She gave him the pearl; he gave her a door out of there.
He had not, however, explained that she could only use his portal if his magic recognized her as bound to him. At that exact moment, with the portal open and waiting, the mage had finished his working. Elia's life began evaporating from her skin.
“I gave you the pearl!” she’d yelled.
“And I gave you a door.” He'd marked it with a bow. “Now what will you give me to walk through it?”
The sea-lord had then flooded the room, cutting off the working, but filling her lungs. She'd coughed up saltwater and gasped, “Anything.” Details hadn’t mattered. Only living had.
The blood fae bit her and they'd both fallen through the door.
Only later did she realize his manipulations. The fae was no mere bloodling, but rather was Daaven Eranyvetri, the heir of the Crosswise Court. He could have ended the conflict with the mage and sea-lord with a snap of his fingers. Instead, he’d chosen to entrap her. She still didn't know why.
Their door had opened into the open court room of his family’s holdings. There among the tittering courtiers, he’d dragged her — hand still bleeding — to his mother’s throne and declared her his betrothed.
In retrospect, she should have allied with the sea-lord.
"Dearest," Daaven said, appearing eye-level before her. He combed his long fingers through her falling-down hair, "you've been hiding from me."
She shuddered. "Can you stop the elemental?"
Daaven stood and stretched. The fine silks of his coat wafted warm incense as he moved. She hated how well it settled her rabbiting heart. Three months she'd lived in his court before she'd found a way to escape. During that time, she'd never named them betrothed, had never accepted his gifts, and had never granted him her kiss. That had been why she could escape as she did.
With a sketch of his hand, the howling winds quieted and the pelting rain slowed. The storm was not gone; he'd simply enclosed the two of them within a bubble of time.
"One minute," he announced. "Why should I not simply leave once those seconds pass?"
She glared up at him, hating the smug line of his lips and flat light of his emerald eyes. "I'm your betrothed."
His eyes widened, and he swallowed. "Are you? Wives-to-be don't typically run away and hide for five years."
Her nails bit into her palms. "You tricked me."
"And yet you're calling on that trick now." He knelt so that they were eye-level. Urgency limned his every word. "Fifteen seconds. You know the rules. Say it again and seal it with a kiss." He drew a dagger and nicked his lower lip: a gift of blood and all the protection and promises that represented.
She stared at him and the bead of blood welling on his lips. If she kissed him, if she accepted his gift, she could never run again.
"Seven seconds."
Lightning cracked overhead, stretching line by line like a claw toward her. Death was waiting. Fine. If she had no choice, she could at least even the scales.
Elia smeared blood from her thumb onto her lips and surged to meet his. A gift for a gift. When she pulled back, she had no time to ponder the strange relief in his gaze. "I am your betrothed."
"And I am yours," he responded, pulling her into another kiss, accepting the gift, granting the kiss, binding himself to her as tightly as she was now bound to him. That meant something; she didn't know what yet. The bubble of time popped. A deafening roll of thunder cut to silence.
"My Elia," he murmured, smearing their blood with his thumb over her lips and corner of her mouth. "We have so much to discuss." He wrapped his other arm around her, tugging her flush against his chest. Her nose pressed into his collar and that cursedly calming resin-honey-woodsmoke scent of his.
Light flashed. And they were gone.
#snippet#elia#no clue what this is yet#daaven needs elia for political reasons#i think he was charmed by her quick mind and wit during the pearl case#and decided she'd be the perfect ally for political shit#but then miscalculated on the recruitment by not explaining first#then she managed to escape before he could explain#and he's been using her in absentia to ward off an unwanted marriage and advance his agenda#but it has been very slow going and likely to fail soon#he was on the verge of finding another ally when he smelled her blood for the first time in YEARS#and he has a chance again#he was always going to save her but she surprises him by calling herself his betrothed#and that is when he decides to try Plan A again with her at his side#elia has no patience for court politics and especially fae court politics#but she has named him and kissed him and accepted him#and foolishly offered her own gift in return#(a fact that had given him SO MUCH hope)#what daaven wants more than anything is someone in his corner#elia thinks she wants quiet stability but really she wants challenges#that's why she accepted the amulet job#elia thinks she's a sucker for sob stories#but really she is snared by challenges and she isn't exactly fond of that aspect of herself#she prefers to believe she's just really empathic#daaven has some acumen but he's more connections lies tricks and power#elia is all cleverness agile risk-taking patient scary intelligent#she talked her way into an academic position with zero credentials and backed it up with her intelligence and acuity#that doesn't mean she wants to be the queen of the crosswise court

How UK University Rankings Are Calculated: The Role of Academic Reputation
Academic reputation is one of the most critical factors influencing university rankings. 📚 From world-class faculty credentials to groundbreaking research, this metric evaluates how a university is perceived globally by academics, employers, and students alike.
If you’re curious about the detailed process behind university rankings, dive into this resource: How UK University Rankings Are Calculated. In this post, we’ll explore how academic reputation shapes rankings and why it matters to students and institutions.
Why Academic Reputation Matters in Rankings
Universities aren’t just judged by the number of graduates they produce or the beauty of their campuses; they’re measured by their intellectual output and academic prestige. Academic reputation reflects how well a university performs in terms of:
Faculty credentials and expertise.
Research output and innovation.
Peer recognition among global academic institutions.
It’s no surprise that universities with strong reputations attract the brightest students, the best faculty, and prestigious partnerships.
1. Faculty Credentials: The Backbone of Academic Excellence 👩🏫👨🏫
The quality of faculty members plays a pivotal role in establishing a university’s academic reputation. Rankings assess:
Educational Backgrounds: Do faculty members hold advanced degrees from top institutions?
Teaching Expertise: Are they effective educators, engaging students in meaningful learning?
Professional Contributions: Are they recognized leaders in their fields?
For students, this means gaining access to experienced mentors who can inspire and guide them toward successful careers.
2. Research Output: The Heart of Innovation 🌍✨
One of the most visible indicators of academic reputation is research. Universities that contribute groundbreaking studies, technological advancements, or policy solutions tend to rank higher. Key factors include:
Research Publications: The number and quality of published research in prestigious journals.
Citations: How often other researchers refer to a university’s work, reflecting its influence.
Research Funding: Grants and sponsorships that support cutting-edge projects.
💡 Fun Fact: Universities with a strong research culture are often seen as leaders in tackling global challenges, from climate change to medical breakthroughs.
3. Employer Perception: Bridging Academia and Industry 🏢🎓
Academic reputation isn’t just about internal metrics—it also relies on external recognition from employers. Universities that consistently produce skilled, employable graduates earn a better reputation among top companies. Rankings assess:
Graduate Employability: Do alumni secure competitive positions in their fields?
Partnerships with Industry: Does the university collaborate with businesses for research or internships?
Students benefit by gaining access to a strong alumni network and job opportunities post-graduation.
4. Peer Reviews: What Other Institutions Think 🌟
Another significant factor is how universities are perceived by their peers. Rankings often survey academics worldwide to evaluate:
Perception of Teaching and Research Quality: How do other universities view the institution’s contributions?
Reputation for Innovation: Is the university seen as a thought leader in education or research?
This helps establish a university’s standing in the global academic community.
5. The Ripple Effect of Academic Reputation
Academic reputation has a domino effect:
Attracting Talent: Prestigious universities draw top-tier students and faculty.
Securing Funding: A strong reputation increases the chances of receiving grants and sponsorships.
Boosting Rankings: High academic reputation scores naturally elevate a university’s rank.
This cycle ensures that well-regarded institutions maintain their leadership in education and research.
Why This Matters to You as a Student
Academic reputation isn’t just a number in a ranking—it directly impacts your experience as a student. Here’s why:
Quality Education: Learning from renowned professors ensures you’re receiving the best education possible.
Better Opportunities: Graduating from a university with a strong reputation opens doors to competitive jobs and advanced studies.
Global Recognition: Your degree carries more weight internationally, increasing your career prospects.
For more insights into how academic reputation contributes to rankings, check out How UK University Rankings Are Calculated.
Tips for Students Choosing a University
Research Faculty: Look into the qualifications and achievements of professors in your field.
Check Research Strengths: Investigate the university’s contributions to areas you’re passionate about.
Evaluate Alumni Success: Are graduates of the university making strides in their careers?
Final Thoughts
Academic reputation is the cornerstone of university rankings. It reflects a university’s ability to innovate, educate, and inspire on a global scale. For students, this metric ensures access to world-class education and unparalleled opportunities.
So, as you consider your options, remember that choosing a university with a strong academic reputation isn’t just a step toward a degree—it’s an investment in your future. 🌟
