More thoughts on writing and ACGAS2020:

It seems like out of all the characters James has the least backstory and the least trauma. He's a flawed character for sure. And not the least bit boring or flat. But we have Helen (and Jenny) who lost their mother, Siegfried who lost his wife, Mrs. Hall's tumultuous marriage and relationship with her son, Tristan's struggles with (imo) neurodiversity, losing his father, and gaining Siegfreid as a father figure.

The reason I'm noting this is because James is, again imo, the 'main character'. He's the person who introduces us to the world. We get to see each character for the first time from his perspective. It is his actions or inactions that drive much of the plot.

I think his relative character simplicity aids the ensemble nature of the story. I think it might be hard to write a main character with such a strong backstory and also juggle all the backstories of the other characters.

But to get back about Granville. These are my thoughts of how he’d be tackled nowadays: (Not even by the ACGAS2020 writers, but generally the way people write and interpret characters nowaways)

He’d be one of these two things:

Sort of a comic relief character, but, like, negative. Unlikeable, bad, EVIL, because he’s not a politically correct nice character, he DRINKS and EATS too much and ABUSES James with his peer pressure by FORCING him to eat and drink too much... and he’s a FAT man with a PRETTY wife, so he MUST be oppressing her.

TRAGIC Granville. Granville has a WWI trauma, and from starvation he got a terrible eating disordert, that is why he eats so much. He has a pretty wife to remind him of the good old days when he was young. He has so much money because he hoards everything. He only treats small pets because big animals remind him of the war. Zoe is married to him out of pity, even though he is fat and she is pretty.

And Zoe would be either one of these:

A poor, opporessed trophy wife. POOR Zoe, her husband always DRINKS and she has no say in anything. He kisses his dogs all day and she has to pickle onions. (No, wait, pickled onions are not fashionable for modern tv.) SHE HAS TO BAKE MACARONS. He eats them in five seconds.

Zoe is a trophy wife, but secretly a GIRLBOSS: She’s the one who’s really the driving force behind the surgery! It’s really her who’s operating on all those animals, because her husband is always drunk. She secretly studied veterinary medicine while he was away eating and drinking.

Zoe is SO KIND. She is SO SORRY for POOR GRANVILLE. She could be married to *anyone* but she’s MARRIED HIM. POOR GRANVILLE!!!

Because one of the happiest married couples on tv, consisting of one of the best and most competent men, and most intelligent and reserved women, simply wouldn’t be cool enough to show as they really are. (And also, people need to be perfect looking on screen to be sympathetic AND complex characters. Everyone else can get one of these points at most!)
