This is what the fight is like
Sooo, apparently the extremely tenuous and recent nature of the LGBTQ+ community's legal right to exist was not actually super widely known to a lot of people on Tumblr?
Which clarifies some stuff in retrospect. I have so often wanted to grab people by their lapels and shout, "Stop picking on someone for not meeting your entry requirements! We need everyone we can get, you asshole! DON'T YOU KNOW HOW MUCH THEY HATE US OUT THERE?"
Aaaapparently... no, they did not know. Or they knew and were a conservative psyop preparing the ground for our loss of legal rights. Fun times!
So: Look, it is bad. Shit is scary. They really do hate us out there. You're not wrong.
But: This is what we've always fought. This boat we're in with its antique fittings and strange markings on the floor is a battleship. Work has always been going on in the basements, and when shit gets tough, we clear away clutter and roll out the cannons.
I found this chart a couple weeks ago and hung onto it because it felt like the map to my first 25 years on this earth:
Tumblr media
[Image description: A graph titled "Same Sex Marriage: Public Polls since 1988." It is from FiveThirtyEight's NYT column. It records the percentage of US Americans polled who would say yes or no to legalizing same-sex marriage, from 1988 to 2011.
The two lines begin with roughly 10% saying yes in 1988, and 70% saying no; the two lines gradually draw closer over the years, until by 2011, the percent saying finally dips under 50%, and the group saying yes makes a tentative reach for the majority. End of image description.]
After some great social change has happened, when everyone has admitted that gay marriage is very cute and Pride is a colourful parade, hooray, people like to pretend that it was just natural and inevitable and happened on its own. People just became less prejudiced! Courts just decided on a case! Governments just passed a law!
In reality, it was a vicious fucking fight, every fucking time. Every fucking where. There are a lot of people who deeply, sincerely believe that a hundred years ago, society had good rules about sex and gender and intercourse and marriage, and that changing those rules has made the world worse. They don't always agree on the specifics, but they can work together far enough to fight anyone with new ideas.
This is why we are a community. Even when we don't have the same experiences of attraction or identity, even when we don't do the same things, even when we have wildly different ideas of a good time. Because when these groups take aim, we're all under fire, and none of us is responsible for why they hate us.
In some ways I think it's a miracle that there seems to be a generation that did not grow up, as I grew up, constantly glued to news reports about What Percentage of Society Hates Us this month. I can't imagine who I'd be if my brain and heart and soul hadn't been tied up, that whole time, in the political question of whether I'd get to dream of a decent future.
I think that it will give us strength to have people who can imagine a world where no one hates us. Who believe in it so strongly they can taste it. That's my prediction: If you didn't know this was coming, you'll be a boon to us, because we have always needed joy so fiercely, in this fight, to keep us going on. We have needed drag queens and punk bands and "her wife" and safe space stickers. Parade floats and wedding days and little dogs with rainbow collars, badges and banners and meetups, because more than anything else we need to fight our own despair, and our fear that the world will never get any better than this.
It will. We know it will. We can taste it.
Look up to the history, organizations, and people who've got us this far for information on what forms of activism will actually advance our political goals. Look to the side to make sure the comrades within reach are keeping their heads above water, and that you're keeping enough joy going to stay alive. Look back to see who's more vulnerable than you are that you might have forgotten or been tempted to leave behind. Look after each other. Look after yourself.
We can do this.
To your battle stations.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!
There are holidays that I'm convinced the world doesn't need… St. Patrick's Day, for example. I think it's perfectly fine to be proud of your heritage. I mean, I have an Italian grandmother. I'm totally proud of that. She makes the best pasta in the world. Hehehe, if you look at my belly, you can tell.
You see St. Patrick's Day parades on every channel. It's pure brainwashing! I look at my stomach again… Maybe I'll use the day to do something for my fitness. The streets are full of happy people. Intrusively cheerful people with funny green hats.
The guy at reception is wearing a green T-shirt. And has a shamrock painted on his cheek. I could puke. "Hi mate, nice to see you. Not much going on today. But we'd like to take a few pictures for social media later. Something along the lines of today-we've-trained-in-green. Would you wear this tank top for training?" He holds something green out to me. Fortunately without a shamrock or a funny gnome. It looks like a rugby jersey. Maybe a little big. I smile painfully. "Mate, give yourself a jolt! I'll give you a protein flat rate and free training for three months!" You don't care about the protein flat rate. But free training for three months… You'll save a good 150 dollars. Then it won't be so bad that you come here so rarely.
"Come on, give it to me!" you say and give him a fist bump. Fist bump? What's wrong with you today? All right… Put on your jersey, half an hour on the cross trainer, then maybe a bit of chest training. And then that should be it. And if you absolutely have to post pictures of it. You go to the changing area. Yawning emptiness. Exactly to your taste, actually! You undress, put on the sweatpants and then the jersey. You take a quick look in the mirror. An overweight quarter-Italian in a green rugby jersey. You doubt that this will bring the gym even one new follower, let alone a customer.
You usually start on the cross trainer with low resistance. Today you can try something new. It's empty, no one is watching, you can't embarrass yourself. So you go to the rowing machine. You have no experience with that. So you hit the maximum resistance. And off you go! After half an hour, you wipe the sweat from your forehead. Your jersey sticks to your chest, soaked with sweat. The gym employee stands in front of you with a grin. "Bro, those were some really awesome shots! What are you up to now?" You grumble that rowing is a good base for lat training. And that you're currently doing antagonist training. So combine it with chest training. "Nice, that should make for great pictures." You don't give a damn that the camera is following you the whole time. Focus on the training. And finally, no consideration for others. Moan and grunt when you feel like it. And today you're lifting the heavy weights. That requires a loud scream or two.
Shit, you've been here for almost three hours. You're done. You shout to your gym's social media representative that it's time for the final show. You take off your slightly too tight jersey with some difficulty. And wring out the sweat. You smile at the camera and say "Happy St. Patrick's Day, bros! Stay focused and train hard!" Your buddy gives you a fist bump and says it was a lot of fun with you again. You hand him your cell phone and ask him for a photo. For your own account.

I don’t think there’s a single book BookTok has promoted in the last couple years that’s turned out to be an actually good “you cannot miss this read” which now makes me and so many others I know avoid it as a whole.
A lot of BookTok books seem to be specific for very young or very new readers who haven’t cut their teeth on fanfic or haven’t been reading from a young age. The writing style is either a really profound Instagram metaphorical caption kinda overwrought and over flowery language, or it’s trying so hard to be edgy and sardonic and ends up being completely tell and almost zero show. This Is How You Lose The Time War is a PERFECT example of this - where the flowery and poetic language actually takes AWAY from a scene and distracts you from it rather than adding anything to it in the moment, and for those who do like poetic fiction this will be up their alley but if you don’t and you pick it up because of badly marketed hype when you normally wouldn’t, it’s gonna turn you off reading in general!
There’s nothing wrong with starter fiction to help get readers engaged and then find their way into actually good books, but my gripe is that it’s never ever marketed as that and as if it it’s just generically good fiction. Nothing Colleen Hoover has ever written is objectively good - the writing style is mediocre and she romanticises taboo topics which will seem spicy to the average population who doesn’t READ. And yet she takes up every bookshelf which I promise you will end up turning many readers who ARENT on booktok away from reading altogether.
YA is another genre that has declined a lot in recent years because it’s full of marketers trying to fit all the buzzword tropes into their books and getting young readers to buy it because it’s “enemies to lovers pirate cyberpunk found family” or whatever - and it feels more like focus group fiction rather than actual writing. I LOVE YA but nothing that’s been released post 2020 has had any depth, plot, character development or any style to it.
A great example is Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros - i tried reading 2 chapters as a sample and it was shocking to see how illogical, overdramatic, overedgy and exceptionally “this happened then this then this then that” it was. There was absolutely zero nuance and it felt so “I’m telling you all this but I’m not gonna prove any of it”. And yet it’s rated either 5 stars or 1 star. I’m sure it’s a great starter middle grade/teen book but it is definitely not deserving to be on the same pedestal as other YA books like Hunger Games or Six of Crows. I used to think that perhaps I’ve just outgrown YA but considering I can pick up YA from 2018 that I haven’t read before with no problems, it’s so specific to BOOKTOK YA.
It’s getting to the point that if I see a book that’s being overpromoted on tiktok, I’m more likely to believe the bad reviews because there hasn’t been a SINGLE book where I’ve disagreed with them, and then go find a different book in the same genre that hasn’t been on booktok - it’s getting hilarious actually that the books that are actually incredible get zero screen time and traction on booktok because they aren’t just cheap easy airport reads. Once again - nothing wrong with an easy airport CH book or YA book, but we aren’t going around parading a Lee Child book as peak literature no matter how enjoyable they are.
I don’t even have a conclusion to this entire rant - I’m sick of books like Babel getting steamrolled because it was “too sad or too hard” in favour of the latest SJM book, and getting even more sick of the decline of media literacy due to books getting easier and more spoonfeedy. When they aren’t? They mistake flowery metaphors for complexity and depth.

SHOW YOU WHY — EVAN “BUCK” BUCKLEY x READER x 118: [Spring Prompts]
Tumblr media
A/N: I’m excited to see what the rest of season 7 brings us! This piece can fit for both Buck (since there’s some hints of a crush between reader + Buck—if you squint!) and the rest of the 118. I’m just thrilled to see them all back on screen so I wanted to include everyone in this.
WARNINGS: gave the gender-neutral reader some background & mentions of a tough upbringing + use of curse words!!!
PROMPTS ARE FROM HERE & I’m using: 3. “Welcome to ~allergies~” + 20. “IT’S SPRINGTIME MUTHA-FUCKERS.”
<- read my previous flop of a spring prompt here.
𓇼☾☼𓇼☾☼ 𓇼☾☼𓇼☾☼ 𓇼☾☼𓇼☾☼ 𓇼☾☼𓇼☾☼
Anywhere but here you wanted to be.
You could have gotten out of this too, just like the mayor’s ball back in December but you personally didn’t want to receive an ear-full of a voicemail from your aunt yet again. So you dealt with it (being here on time-except you actually weren’t in your aunt’s eyes) putting in the work to also give “orders” rather than instructions to the workers while she had other hired workers tend to her full attire.
She won a honorary award just last month so she planned on parading that around her birthday party. It wasn’t the smartest move having it right at the entry way of the home, sitting on the center piece of a circular oak table that her great-grandfather built, with party goers but since the spring weather decided to stick in California, your aunt was more than willing to have this gathering out back but not without having most of her guests walk through the front doors first.
The main reason to have this party was for the attendees to constantly compliment the view of the vineyard out back. You already knew your aunt’s (by marriage) game, having the honor of being raised by her from the time you were thirteen. You just wished you could close your eyes, squeeze them really tight to the point that they hurt, and this would be over.
Thankfully an hour into the party, your uncle shows up, rushing in from his work trip out in Finland—don’t ask—brushing his lips against your hairline and giving you a tight side hug before he’s whisked off by his high energy wife of twenty years. That gave you enough time to sneak away from the boring and prying conversations, the set up of trying to date one of the attendees, and hide for a little bit before your cover was blown and you were thrown back into the party of socializing.
Another forty-five minutes pass and you’re getting a text that has you jumping to your feet, swaying a bit before you excuse yourself back into the mediterranean home to greet the guests you’ve been waiting for.
Yanking the door open you yell, “IT’s SPRING TIME MUTHA-FUCKERS! Welcome to my family’s place and I’m so glad you guys could make it.”
Chimney smirks around the chewing of his gum, “can’t say I’ve been greeted like that ever but I’m not complaining! as long as I get to have whatever it is you’ve had.”
You tilt your head to the side at the spikey haired man, “Chim! How many times do I have to tell ya? I’m not a drinker…I’m just spreading all things…spring?”
“I can tell with that outfit.”
A elbow goes to his gut from Maddie while Hen scoffs with a shake of her head at her best friend, who’s now rubbing his torso.
You’re waving the group all in, hugging Athena as she says, “your family has a mighty big house.”
“Yeah, I was just about to say what did they do again?” Eddie is next in embracing you after almost doing a full spin in the entry way, staring up at the high ceilings.
Buck is last to pull you into a hug, lightly rocking you both from side to side while you hold his back, “Can’t believe you grew up here.”
You shrug, “It’s just a house of an Architect and a mayor.”
“You must have had crazy parties here,” Buck is grinning wildly while Eddie is rolling his eyes at him.
“Of course Evan would be the one to think about the parties,” Maddie stares over at her younger brother who’s shameless about his daydreams of what that may have looked like.
You lifted your shoulders, “anyways! Make yourselves comfy but stay away from the Rueger’s—they’re swingers and may try to encourage you into joining their underground society club. A good portion of the people here are uppity but there’s a sprinkle of good ones that you won’t want to kick up the ass.”
“Oh! Say no more, I know exactly who I’m talking to.” Athena shoots a look to Bobby who’s pleading with his eyes to his wife, to just enjoy the party and not interrogate but Athena wouldn’t be Athena if she didn’t go investigate.
Bobby squeezes your shoulder on his way by but keeps his eyes on Athena’s retreating form, “Its good to see you and thanks for the invitation. I’m going to do my best and make sure things don’t erupt into chaos.”
You nod your head, expecting this but let out a sigh although there’s a smile on your lips. Hen takes a step closer to you as you’re now humming, swaying your hands about as if they were floating on water. “Uh, you sure you’re alright? You seem…a little off?”
“What do you mean?” You question, hands moving to float above Hen’s shoulders, almost as if you’re not aware you’re doing this.
This gains the other’s attention as the low haired woman peeks from left to right while you’re making a wave with your hands. “Stop that and hold still.”
“Why? The air never does.”
Which earns a chuckle from Chimney while Hen grips your shoulders, scanning your face and finally focuses on the end of your brow to the lid of your eye.
“Hen, what’s up?” Buck quizzes, eyes steady on you two.
Hen shushes him while she keeps her eyes on you, “how many fingers am I holding up?”
You blink then smile, “two caterpillars,” you speak so matter of factly, ready to spin away from the conversation but Hen is pulling you back by the shoulders.
“Hen—
Chimney tries this time and Maddie is furrowing her brows also confused.
“I think they’re having an allergic reaction.” Hen concludes before directing the rest of her words to you, “your eye area is swelling up and if you didn’t take anything, I’d say you’re also a little disoriented? Maybe even experiencing some brain fog?”
You shrug, “must have been the sea bass or was it trout? that Eitan guy tried to share with me. Whatever, let’s have some fun now that my friends are here.”
You’re dancing now, although it feels like your brain is spinning in slow-motion, yet the outside music is pretty faint.
Buck has his eyes in slits, “who the hell is Eitan?”
“And why was he feeding you?” Eddie added, he didn’t hear any updates about your dating life either and he was sure if it was true, Buck would have been the first to tell him instead.
Maddie stares at the two ridiculous men, “they didn’t say the guy was feeding them.”
Chimney leans towards Hen as her face still holds concern, fingertips lightly pressing on the lymph nodes in your neck which you laugh at the sensation, “Want me to search the house to see what I can find? You don’t think they’re going to stop breathing any time soon do you?”
The way Buck and Eddie snap their attention to the dark haired man’s words; burning their eyes into his frame, makes Chimney realize that it doesn’t hurt to turn down his bluntness some but Hen thinks nothing of it.
“How!” Maddie hisses his name from behind, while Chim holds his hands up to show he has no ill-intent, you were his friend too.
Hen starts, “I don’t think they consumed enough to get to that point but—
“Hey, aren’t you allergic to all things seafood anyway? Why would that jackass give that to you?” Buck interrupts with a cross of his arms, becoming irritated.
Eddie also states, “and why would your tío and tía have that here? Surely they know your health history.”
Maddie also can’t help but to ask in a much more compassionate approach, “How exactly did this happen?”
“I got caught up in the love story Eitan’s ninety year old grandmother was telling me on the right about the love letters she received from her husband in the navy. Eitan’s calling my name from the left to try this and next thing I know, I’m eating fish.” You notify, hoping that answered this test.
Buck scrunches up his nose, “who does this guy think he is? Just spoon feeding you without even knowing your likes, dislikes, and what you can’t have!”
Eddie asserts in agreement as Buck begins to pace now, “I’m sorry but your relatives screwed up.”
“The Tramp too.” Chimney jokes.
You tilt your head to the side while Hen glares and Maddie raises her eyebrows, wanting the man to expand on that.
“Hello! Lady and the tramp anyone? This Eitan guy is obviously the tramp—not your aunt.” Chimney sheepishly smiles, “whew, tough crowd!”
Hen is back to massaging your neck in search of any inflammation while you rant, “Well as auntie Katrina says: you can’t please everyone and sometimes you have to do what you have to do to get to the top. She probably just forgot with all the things on her mind? she was the main one trying to push a love connection between Eitan and I. Also you guys should have seen her earlier. She was all over the place and had to have me take over.” You pull away, coughing into your sleeve, struggling a bit to clear your throat.
The five glance at each other.
You were part of the 118, first somewhat reserved and a little shy rather than closed off but similar to Bobby in a sense when you first joined. It took time to get you to open up, even to Buck who was friendly with everyone. You transferred to the station six months after Buck so he had no issue taking you underneath his wing even if you were complete opposites. It was safe to say that majority of the crew didn’t care for your aunt, simply from the way she spoke to you, and hearing how you tried to sweep the way she treated you growing up away. It was evident verbal abuse but you felt like you owed her something since she stepped in as a mother figure to raise you after the tragedy of losing your own mother.
Part of you knew you shouldn’t feel guilty and that she was the adult who married your biological uncle who was always away—working and that it should have been a given. However when people make you feel like they’re doing you a favor instead of simply caring about you, you just may start to question everything.
Unfortunately, you were the second guesser because of that but not when it came to the field. You became a different person out on the job, quickly thinking and analyzing everything before sprinting into action and that was something the 118 admired.
Maddie and Eddie both share a nod before she speaks, “okay…Eddie and I are going to have a chat with this Eitan guy.”
Buck approved of that although he wouldn’t have minded having a word with Eitan himself, especially if they were all thinking the same thing. Once his eyes flicked back to you after the pair left the room, he noticed the change in your skin gradually and that didn’t sit well with him. So yeah, maybe it was best he stayed behind.
Hen asks you, “Do you have your EpiPen?”
You’re zoning out a bit, eyes disconnecting some but you’re nodding your head as if you’re listening.
So Hen took that as a negative.
“Chim, check the bathrooms for Prednisone or any type of corticosteroid? Even Peppermint oil. If not, try the kitchen for pineapple or even ice just in case.” Hen informs while Chim dips his head before heading off.
Hen smiles as she gently guides you to the stairs which are to the right of the front door, “here, let’s have you sit.”
“But I want to dance!”
“We can do that later,” Buck expresses while following you two, “we just want to make sure you’re okay first and that there’s no funny business going on here.”
Pressing your cheek into your balled up fist you say, “fine…I’ll tell you guys what going on. I’ll come clean.”
Hen and Buck meet each other’s eyes before they peer down at you. Sitting up straight, you exhale and begin to flap your arms like wings, “welcome to…allergies.”
Buck honestly found this a little cute although he didn’t appreciate the increase in size of your brow and eye now but at least you were in good spirits. Even if it seemed like the rest of the 118 were speculating something much more than a simple case of allergies.
“I’m going to move things further along and find the kitchen. Buck, Call out to me if anything changes.” Hen decides before making her exit.
He calls out to her, “You got it.” Then he’s turning back to stand in front of you while you beam up at him, “what’s going on in that field full of daisies of a mind of yours?”
“It’s actually Lillie’s but,” you clear the scratch of your throat again, “I don’t know, I felt kinda anxious being back here but knew I would be okay once you were the first to agree on showing up.”
Buck furrows his brow at the last bit of the sentence, “did you think I wouldn’t?”
“Well…you’ve been busy with Natalia.” You’re blinking your inflamed eye to see if it was tingly or sticky, “Didn’t want to intrude on your quality time.”
“You wouldn’t be, you’re actually one of my best friends and it’s always cool for us to hang out whenever,” Buck replies, “by the way that relationship is over with…and you’ve got that same look on your face as Eddie.”
You actually imagined yourself to look like that one Ryan Gosling gif but only because you were the last to know.
You breathe out a laugh afterwards, “Sheesh! I’m not going to say finally or I told you so because she was super pretty and helped you pick out a couch which was nice and…are you okay?”
Buck chuckles at your mind still wandering all over the place in conversations, “the couch and I are just fine! Thanks for asking.”
You hum, resting your head against the wall.
“So what’s this Eitan guy like?” Buck suddenly probes.
You blink, “think: tall dark and handsome.”
Buck blurts out with a furrow of his brows, “Sasquatch?”
“…if that’s what you’re into.” Laughter bubbles in your voice at the expression on Buck’s face now.
He holds his hands out, “I’m not even going to entertain that.”
“Aw but it’ll be fun.”
Buck plops down beside you, almost taking up a good portion of the uncomfortable steps. He brushes his shoulder against yours and you meet each other’s gaze.
“I’ve missed you, you know?”
Those words right there almost wiped all weird feelings you were having before and after you ate that food. You were never one to think that anyone noticed if you were around or not so hearing Buck say this to you, made you feel warm inside—better even. Somewhat.
“You taking off for a while made sense,” Buck starts with an exhale, “but I didn’t think that time away included spending it with your aunt Kat.”
Buck didn’t hide his dislike of the older woman but out of the respect he had for you, he kept his feelings to himself yet that didn’t mean he didn’t go off about her to Eddie or Maddie when she clearly upset you.
“…Majority of it didn’t.” You answer.
“Where did you go?”
You pointed as if you were mapping it out in the air, “Chicago, then Texas, and back here.”
“…Do I need to know how that was?” he’s pressing his elbows into his knees, getting comfortable right beside you.
He’s told you all about his adventures across the globe, mostly unwarranted but you didn’t mind. You had a sheltered life while your aunt and uncle went all over to see the world thanks to their professions, so you didn’t get out much until you decided to head to the first state you had the deepest connection to. Where your late mother and uncle were born and raised and ultimately where your mother’s life ended.
“All you need to know is that it brought me back home, to the rest of you.”
“Can’t say I don’t like the sound of that.”
You loop an arm with Buck’s and rest your head on his shoulder, “look at us sitting here being nice to each other with our matching marks.”
“I’m always nice and I think mine is cooler.” He says referring to his own strawberry birthmark.
You nuzzle your face against his navy sweater, “You stating your claim on yours being better really defeats the purpose of you being nice.”
“Well, I mean no harm buuut yours is temporary and reminds me of hippo skin.” He’s leaning away, eyes lowered to get a good look at your face up close.
“…Now I see why you and Natalia broke up.”
If chimney was back, you were sure he’d give you some points for roasting Buck back.
“Ouch.” Buck laughs, resting his cheek against your head.
You echo his laugh, “sorry.”
“Don’t be. I can take a joke and Isn’t this season supposed to be about new beginnings or growth or whatever?” Buck was always interested to see the layers of you.
You gasp, “I thought it was the season of allergies.”
Evan hums, “Is that the story you’re sticking with?”
Before you could reply to that Eddie cuts in, “the story actually checks out…you did in fact ingest some sea bass from the nerdy but surprising good looking Eitan. The fish was a little on the salty side so I see why you only had a small piece.”
“A small piece that was enough to have their face looking like hippo skin!” Buck held his hand out underneath your chin to showcase.
Eddie scrunched up his face after taking a look at yours while you slapped the dark blond on his chest, “why would you choose to compare their allergic reaction to that of all things?”
“Why would you give your critiques of a dish you probably don’t even know how to cook?” Buck fired back.
Before they started to bicker, Maddie claps her hands to silence the two men-children and then turns to you with a soft smile, “Eitan also wanted to come over here and apologize but I told him it would best to just wait it out for awhile.”
“Thanks Maddie.” You smile back at the brunette, preferring to be around your friends instead.
“That’s the smartest thing he’s done today.” Buck huffs while Maddie sends him a warning look, to basically knock it off.
Eventually Hen and Chim make their way back but only Hen has items in her hands.
Chim holds his hands out as he exasperates, “you would think people who have a house filled with eight bathrooms would have basic medicine in their cabinets…it’s odd that the only thing I could find was Omeprazole. And Not even a damn Advil!”
“Okay lets not turn this into the ID channel guys, I’m alive and well—
“Well…” almost everyone chorus’ in making you equally send them an incredulous look.
Hen is the one to not have chimed in but chooses to squats in front of you, “Eat this and keep this pressed to your face for at least five to seven minutes.”
“Thank you, Hen.”
“No problem,” she smiles before standing up and looking at the rest, “now go mingle everyone instead of being up in their face, I’m sure they’ll be in good hands with Buck—maybe.”
“Hey!”
Hen winks at him before she walks off with Maddie and Chimney who starts talking about the appetizers he noticed by the patio door.
“Marisol’s calling,” Eddie looks down at his phone, “I trust that I can leave two alone for a few minutes.”
Buck shrugs nonchalantly, “That depends—
“Of course you can.” You side eye the man beside you underneath the ice pack.
Eddie snickers before disappearing behind the sliding doors to a room across from the stairs.
Buck’s breathing beside you makes you more calm until he deeply exhales, clearing his throat while you chew on a pineapple as he turns his body to you.
“So why come back?” His island water eyes holds your stare, lightly pushing since you still had time to get the inflammation to go down.
So what better way to wait it out by talking?
Swallowing the fruit you boldly respond, “you would think I took a year off instead of two weeks but…I’d miss you too much. Is that a good enough answer for you Buckley?”
Evan grins as he bumps his shoulder with yours again, “yeah it is! I just wanted to hear you say it.”
You noticed the change of tone in his voice beside you and fought the urge to shudder at it. So you scoff and push yourself off the steps, plate of pineapple long forgotten as you balanced yourself upright while Buck’s got his hands out to catch you if you fall.
The feeling was always mutual, lifting each other up and going through the motions together as a team.
“Since you’re so full of yourself, let’s battle it out on the dance floor.”
Buck frowns as he glances down at his wrist, “I think you still have another three minutes and thirty-nine seconds left to go…and they’re playing jazz.”
“What’s wrong with that? Would you rather hear The White Stripes or Backstreet Boys…I could make a request if you like?” You teased while Buck pushes himself to his feet.
He blows out a breath, “I tell you one time that Maddie and I had a jam session to that boy band on my sixteenth birthday road-trip to cheer me up and you won’t let it go.”
“I’m not shaming you.” You raise a hand in surrender, “I’m no hater and the band had hits. I don’t care who you are, where you’re from, what you did, as long as you love me—it’s all good.”
Buck rolls his head around, “you’re so clever and you don’t have to worry about that so! Let’s just start off with you finishing the rest of those pineapples and I’ll try one of those appetizers before you show me some moves but I don’t think they have anything on mine.”
“Please! I’ll be very shocked to see you do more than a two-step since you also hate karaoke.”
“I don’t hate it.” Buck picks up the plate for you, “I just prefer not to see my sister and Chimney eat their microphones singing while staring into each others eyes.”
“They’re in love Buck, leave them alone!”
“Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy they found each other. I am their number one fan but that’s still my sister and I don’t need to see more than needed on their love life.” He shudders.
You hook your arm with Buck’s as you begin to walk through the home towards the kitchen, “yeah I guess I get that, yet there’s something so special about seeing people in love! It always shows me why there’s still the urge to keep going, just like us running into fires. Not to just simply put it out but to have a sense of unity when that’s not always common.”
Buck is intently listening and whole heartedly agrees as the both of you settle into the kitchen. He enjoys having conversations with you and you enjoy keeping him company, although he came all this way for you.
Showing up for each other was never foreign but it was times like these, swollen eyed and slightly loopy while the game of politics were being played out in the vineyard, wide grins and random conversations were held inside between the two of you—later joined by the rest of the team—showed that you were surrounded by exactly who you needed to be with.

Thoughts on Alex being wrong and loving it
Red White and Royal Blue (2023 movie)
Remember the little quip Henry makes about admiring Alex's willingness to admit when he's wrong? It's such a great moment of foreshadowing, especially since Henry has no idea just how right he is.
Alex prizes himself on being someone who is skilled at reading people, at seeing the person beneath the surface, but he's never come across anyone quite like Henry before.
Alex must be used to people hiding who they truly are - he's been steeped in American politics for years - but he probably isn't expecting anyone from such a legacy of historic power and entitlement to be, at their core, an actual cinnamon roll.
Their initial meeting also comes at a time in Henry's life when any chink in his armour reveals only pain and anger, leading Alex to assume that what lies behind the carefully controlled façade isn't pleasant.
This assumption is only reinforced by further antagonistic interactions, fuelled by Henry's attempts to balance civility while protecting his heart as Alex consistently pulls Henry's metaphorical pigtails.
The fallout from cakegate forces them into extended periods of proximity and we see Alex start to glimpse pieces of the real Henry beneath his bland public persona. Each further piece that's revealed surprises and delights Alex and it's a joy to watch Taylor Zakhar Perez bring those moments to life.
Allow me to ramble about some of these:
1. Alex's pause of panic followed by surprised relief as Henry suavely responds to the interview question, "How did you end up on the floor of Buckingham Palace, covered in cake?" Alex's relief is two fold: he was floundering with no idea what to say (shouldn't have rebuffed Henry's request to prepare for this interview, Alex...) and Henry's answer is not at all what Alex was expecting. Henry could easily have attributed the event to clumsiness or tomfoolery on Alex's part - even just by subtle implication. That wouldn't have been out of line with some of Alex's answers (e.g., "Three words to describe Henry? Um... White, blond and British.") but Henry chooses a more protective route, deflecting attention from Alex, which comes as a pleasant surprise. [Of course he can't show this, so instead retaliates with something as annoying as possible. Cue side eye from Henry.]
2. Alex's big-eyed expression of sympathy as Henry tells him the Palace insisted on parading him around while he was grieving for his father. It's the key moment Alex realises he's built a lot of assumptions on a misunderstanding and has probably treated Henry rather unfairly.
3. Alex frowning at Henry talking and laughing with the little girl in the hospital bed. He's seeing Henry through a new lens and realises this picture doesn’t fit with a lot of his previous assumptions.
4. Alex shaking his head at Henry's joking attempt to decline an invite to his NYE party that most people would kill to get. "That's perfect, you kill me and then I won't have to go." It's the first time Henry uses his sharp wit to share a joke with Alex, rather than directing it at him in a fit of pique. It's an olive branch and I don't think Alex was expecting such easy forgiveness.
5. The sublime series of text based interactions where Alex is surprised and charmed by Henry flirting (under the guise of gentle ridicule).
6. The iconic "I can't believe how wrong I was about you," while he and Henry are as close as two people can get.
7. My all time favourite: Alex's reaction to Henry pointing out the yellow roses on his tie. Henry employs this in a sweet distraction during a moment of all encompassing anxiety for Alex. It's enough to bring Alex out of his fog, to realise how much strength he draws just from Henry being there to support him. The way Taylor says "Oh my god. I'm so grateful you are here," is perfection.
I'm a gooey mess thinking about all the future moments where Alex is surprised and overwhelmed by Henry's kindess.
[Sobs]
On a related note @mulderscully has a great post titled: Alex's headshake of Love™, which captures several of these moments, and more, in perfect gif form.

There is visual storytelling with Bi-Han's frustration with Liu Kang, but story mode does nothing to validate his frustrations at all, making said frustration seem unjustified, and that he's in the wrong for feeling this way, as he's the only Lin Kuei who actually is frustrated. Not everyone saw his frustration, so is the visual storytelling intentional, or coincidental? It's ironic, as Mortal Kombat is not known for its subtlety at all.
In advance, forgive me for starting with introduction-digression about Mortal Kombat 1’s storytelling - I promise it has a point related to Bi-Han.
Mortal Kombat 1’s main purpose is to set the ground for future storytelling so understandably, we can’t expect this game to spell out every detail to us at once right away. We, as freshly introduced guests to Liu Kang’s timeline, take a lot at face value about characters and setting because we simply don’t have enough knowledge about them yet. However I wouldn’t say MK1 lacks subtlety or it didn’t show us a pretty nuanced world already. The best example is the Edenia admired and praised by Liu Kang, as a beautiful, knowledgeable and wealthy place
Tumblr media
and indeed the first impression fits well what Fire Lord told his champions. Yet under the gorgeous facade lurks the much darker, uglier side of Edenia - and by extension, of Royal Family.
When the wonderful and joyful parade was disrupted,
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the scene following was there to explain the conflict between Li Mei and the Royal Family, however the visual side of story foreshadows what Baraka’s chapter will reveal - the sick people are treated like unwanted trash. Here alone, they aren’t peacefully led outside the city, they are bound like criminals - both (potentially) sick and those who refused to hand them over to the authorities for "quarantine" (a word used by Li Mei, but as next chapters will shown, the quarantine means banishment and dying slowly in miserable conditions). This one chapter alone gives us two sources about Edenia - Liu Kang’s words and the background details which frankly paint two different pictures. Liu Kang noted how Sindel spared no money for the festival and Tournament (Mileena added it is to honor the memory of Sindel’s late husband and her father)
Tumblr media
and how he does not judge the Queen, only admire
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- but apparently the Queen cared more for Festival/Tournament and to make Edenia look as a great nation than she cared for her sick subjects who for years were dying in poverty, excluded and persecuted by edenian society. She even blamed Mileena for getting sick and said that to her face. Sindel also accepts Umgadi system that literally forces edenian families to give up their first daughters for training (indoctrination), so the ruling Family have a loyal Palace Guard to uphold their safety - and power -  and Liu Kang, like most of characters, admired those warriors showing no criticism toward such practices that strips born-free citizens from their freedom, family, even from right to fall in love. All in the service of Edenia’s monarchy.
My point is, what we are told about Sindel - the beloved good Queen - and what we are shown by details happening in background or brought by tie-in materials (character BIOs, intro dialogues) are not mutually exclusive, but those for sure highlight the contradictory and flawed image the new Mortal Kombat saga introduced in its first installment . However the main criticism toward Sindel is not focused at presented by story flaws and errors, only at her relationship with Liu Kang and Earthrealm and comes from General Shao and his allies. Considering who he is, it is easy to side with Sindel yet we can’t say the game didn’t laid some solid ground for a very serious criticism, both for Sindel, the ruling Family and Liu Kang who always spoke highly about the Queen, King and Princesses.
Now, let’s talk about Bi-Han.
On one hand, intro dialogues and story mode itself are too consistent and repetitive about Bi-Han’s firm take on freedom & enslavement to think it is coincidence, especially for a character so sidelined as Sub-Zero was. Clearly, someone made a deliberate choice to emphasize those two values in regard to motives behind Bi-Han’s action, even if the official BIO itself appointed POWER as his main theme.
On another hand, there is no doubt that the game was not intended to focus on Sub-Zero’s frustrations nor examine its roots in any great detail, at least not at this early stage of introducing a new timeline. It doesn’t help that Bi-Han was seen in two first chapters, one his own (ch. 8) and in following Scorpion’s (ch.9) to disappear from the story for good and returning as the Champion/Titan Sub-Zero only as an alternative choice of player.
However! Even with such limited focus, the game in my opinion laid enough ground, both as what we are told and what we are shown by story mode alone, to get the feeling Bi-Han’s frustration didn’t come out of nowhere. Could it be handled better? Of course! But I must disagree with the opinion that visual storytelling didn’t do its work. It may not hit fans straight in the face with all its nuances, yet there is a clear difference in how Lin Kuei characters are treated by Fire Lord in contrast to other Liu Kang’s Champions and friends.
And this is not just about Bi-Han, but also about the treatment of Kuai Liang and Tomas.
For one, the story always presented Lin Kuei doing Liu Kang’s bidding - be it testing the new Champions or eliminating a threat (black op mission). We do not see Fire Lord interacting with them outside of Lin Kuei servitude, while he clearly spent time with Johnny, Kenshi, Raiden and Kung Lao outside of their main (game) purpose. This is especially visible at the end of the story, when all of them dinner together at Madam Bo’s, clearly celebrating their success. Bi-Han’s lack of presence is understandable, yet Kuai Liang and Tomas? All we are told about Scorpion is that he was tasked with making a new clan to replace the rebellious Lin Kuei (thus he is doing another bidding of Fire Lord while Champions are allowed to take a break and enjoy time with friends)
Tumblr media
while Smoke is completely omitted - even though the man fulfilled his duty to Earthrealm as any other Liu Kang’s Champion did and now helps to build Shirai Ryu clan.
Frankly, not acknowledging Lin Kuei in itself contrasts a lot with how Liu Kang interacted with his Outworld friends and Champions. Bi-Han has never been addressed as Grandmaster of Lin Kuei (nor by his codename?), even during introductions to Kung Lao, Raiden, Kenshi and Johnny. Meanwhile, the edenian Royal Family’s titles are always respected. Jerrod is called outright a friend and so is Geras - yet not once in story mode Liu Kang expressed regret over the premature death of Bi-Han, Tomas and Kuai Liang’s father. Smoke actually was omitted all the time by Liu Kang and visually/story-wise speaking, Liu Kang alienated Tomas more than Bi-Han did in the few scenes the brothers shared together.
Even the recruitment of new Champions is questionable. Liu Kang took Bi-Han - a Grandmaster who had his own duties to a whole clan  - on a trip to test the new fighters. Since Bi-Han and his men weren’t fighting to the fullest of their strength, what was the point of dragging Sub-Zero in the first place instead of just picking fighters more closely in level to Kung Lao, Raiden, Kenshi and Johnny? Was Bi-Han’s presence there truly necessary, when already two other sons of the late Grandmaster took part in the test too? All done just to lose so the precious Champions could brag about their victory? That alone must be frustrating if we remember that members of the Lin Kuei weren’t trained to fight the “honorable kombat match”, as in one on one, but to kill the enemy as fast as possible - as chapter 8 and 9 clearly showed.
Sure, the story mode - be it the words taken at face value or visual storytelling alone - didn’t go out of its way to hit us in the face about Bi-Han’s frustration yet there is a clear contrast in how Liu Kang treats his Lin Kuei subordinates and how he interacts with people he openly admires and likes. There are plenty of nuances laid out for people who will bother to look for those hints and compare them to the rest of presented material.
Also, a thing worth to remember: just because Kuai Liang and Tomas are content with their life and duties, it does not mean Bi-Han shouldn’t be frustrated by things the way they are. Just because he is not trying to be sympathetic, doesn’t mean his feeling of injustice is invalid or that his points have no merit whatsoever.
I may be disappointed with the creators' choices, but I can't say that MK1 is devoid of nuances and interesting contradictions. All comes down to fans and their personal perception of what the story tells us through characters and what shows to actually happening.

does hallownest have pride parades?
Oh that is a pretty interesting question, I'd love to ramble about this. I'm going to say that no, they don't, but not because their society would be against it. Quite the opposite, actually.
The way I imagine it, their culture is far more animal-like than ours in many aspects. They do have morals, obviously, and more complicated social structures and views that distinguish between those who break the law and those who follow it. That being said, it's far from what you see in our society - they don't have an elaborate justice system, so for example, a murderer will simply be executed for their crime without an extended trial, and killing someone in a fair duel doesn't raise any eyebrows. Death is a part of their life and it's not as big of a deal as it is for us, humans. Though things like murder and other serious crimes are frowned upon. The laws are in place to maintain order and peace between different species that coexist, and embrace progress, even if many of their values do not overlap with ours (for example, in some cultures, eating other sapient bugs isn't even considered a crime, though naturally that wouldn't fly in most places).
I mention this, because those kind of animal-like views also contribute to how they see concepts like gender or sexuality. While reproduction and having offspring is an essential part of an animal's life, individuals that engage in behaviors outside of the norm aren't ostracized, discrimination simply isn't really a thing. And I think this aspect would carry over to those living in Hallownest and many other lands in their world. Relationships between different species are generally widely accepted (as for how that even works when it comes to producing young, I won't get into the biology. "It just works" as Todd Howard would say) And similarly, a same-sex couple or someone who explores their gender in ways that go against their biological sex would not be frowned upon, it would simply not be a big deal for most.
I say most, cause I do imagine there are some species/cultures where such behaviors would be questionable at best and treated with hostility at worst. Perhaps some of them put great value in relationships that result in offspring, maybe their mating rituals are so essential in their culture that couples that can't perform them the way it's intended are seen as outcasts and shunned. As an example, I actually have lore that touches on similar concepts with my Lurien interpretation - his species is extremely rare, encouraging relationships only within its kind that can produce children, and its quite unique wedding traditions put a massive emphasis on their sexual dimorphism, which unfortunately leads to discrimination against those who don't fit those norms.
But those would be a minority, and I think most of the communities living in Hallownest would have a much more accepting view on same sex couples and so on, in many ways thanks to FPK's accepting and open nature. Ever since he became the king, he encouraged peace between different communities and believed in a united society, where bugs reject their brutal beastly instincts and instead live as one big community (though unfortunately that part backfired, leading to hostility towards those deemed as "beasts", propagated among the upper class of the City). A naïve view, perhaps, but the bugs still followed the ways of their king.. While he himself struggled with his own sexuality for many years, primarily due to his lack of experience with relationships, he's always been supportive of those who openly embrace their identities.
And because their society has never dealt with substantial discrimination, there was also no need for events such as pride parades - to them, love is love no matter what, so there is no need for specific holidays. If there is a day dedicated to love, then love of any kind is celebrated.
I hope this makes sense. I think their society being so much more accepting than ours despite its animalistic ways is quite interesting. Not to mention, there's a lot of comfort to be found when exploring a world that simply welcomes queer identities as part of life. You might get stabbed and robbed by a bandit in the City if you're alone at night, but at least you can hold hands with your partner and not get called a slur. Love wins ♡

“What did you get them?” Buck asked.
“I don’t even know,” Eddie scoffed. “I got Adri some, like, perfume? And then Soph this cream that smelled like coconut. I don’t really know what it does. I think it said bum on the side. I just hope I didn’t buy my little sister ass cream.”
“Well,” Buck laughed. “I guess if she liked it, that’s all that matters.”
“Yeah,” Eddie said. “You know, they actually got me something this year.”
“They don’t always?” Buck asked.
“I mean, not really,” Eddie explained. “They’re a bit younger than me so their presents for me were actually just things our mom bought and put their names on.”
“So they picked it out themselves this year?”
“Yeah,” Eddie said. “They did.”
“What did they get you?” Buck asked. He was asking a lot of questions, but it really felt like Eddie was leading him there. Like he wanted to talk about it.
“They uh,” Eddie paused for a second. “It’s actually really cute. They bought me a Texas Rangers hat–The Rangers are my favourite baseball team, I don’t know if I told you that–but they got me this Rangers hat that has like a pride flag in the logo.”
“Oh,” Buck said. “That’s uh, that’s cool.”
“Yeah,” Eddie said. “I kind of wanted to cry when I opened it. I just–I don’t know, I wasn’t expecting it. They were so excited to give it to me, too. This might sound stupid but, it’s like I remembered that they’re like whole entire people now and they thought about me and got me this out of a place of–I don’t know. I just can’t believe they thought to buy it.”
“That’s really sweet. Are you–Are you gonna wear it?” Buck asked. He had never seen Eddie wearing anything like that–pride stuff, or whatever. It seemed like most people at school didn’t even realize he was into guys. It took Buck long enough to figure it out.
“Honestly? I don’t know,” Eddie sighed. “It’s not a secret that I’m gay. Not even here–I came out to my family over winter break back in freshman year, and it was fine. I mean, it’s not like my parents are running PFLAG meetings or going to pride parades or anything, but they didn’t really care. If they’re disappointed, or whatever, they don’t really show it. But sometimes I wonder if they would be less supportive if I did do that stuff. Like, pride parades and rainbow merch.”
“Oh.” Buck said. He wasn’t really sure what to say to that. As much as he was–whatever, now, with Eddie–he hadn’t thought much about what that meant for himself. For his sexuality.
Buck didn’t talk to his sister–his parents barely communicated with him. Even if he did figure out an identity that fit, Buck wasn’t sure he would have anybody to come out to. If there was anybody who would care. On one hand, it meant there was no risk of losing anybody over it.
But on the other hand, it made him feel really lonely. Like if he figured it all out–there wouldn’t be anyone to share it with.
But Eddie’s thing sounded hard, too–just in a whole different way.
“I guess it just means a lot,” Eddie kept going. “To know that Adri and Soph want to be like, actively supportive. And they decided to do it all on their own.”
“Yeah,” Buck said, smiling a little at how earnest Eddie sounded. “That’s–that’s great, Eddie.”
“I think so, too,” Eddie sighed. “Even if I never wear the hat, I love that they gave it to me. And I love it so much, even if I’m just gonna keep it around to look at.”

Freckles and Wrinkles
AO3
"Give me a second!” Came the shout from inside.
Geralt rolled his eyes fondly and leaned against the wall of Jaskier’s home. Or Professor Pankratz’s home, as the young student, who had pointed him in the right direction had said.
From behind the door, Geralt could hear rummaging and muffled curses, until finally the door creaked open. Jaskier was leaning against the door frame as if pretending very hard to be casual. He wore the half-open chemise as if it was a choice rather than due to him still not being out of bed and dressed despite it almost being midday.
“Geralt!” Jaskier’s face lit up and he relaxed, dropping the facade of casualness to show real joy. “I wasn’t expecting you.”
“Evidently,” Geralt said, looking pointedly at Jaskier’s tousled hair.
“Oh shush,” Jaskier waved a hand through the air, running the other through his hair and disheveling it even more in the process. “I wear the ‘just woke up’ look well.”
Geralt hummed, just on the border of neutrality, though they both knew that he was agreeing with the bard. Geralt had seen him dressed in the most expensive doublets, after spending hours in front of a mirror. Jaskier looked good, always, but there still was something special about those early mornings, when Geralt got to see Jaskier blink the sleep from his eyes, pillow creases on his face, with his shirt ridden up because of how much the bard had tossed and turned in the night.
“You want to go like this then?” Geralt asked teasingly, lifting a brow.
Jaskier tilted his head to the side and narrowed his eyes at him. For a second, Geralt thought Jaskier was going to say yes, take his hand and parade himself around Oxenfurt in naught but his night-clothes. But then he seemed to think better of it. His hand shot forward and he pulled Geralt inside.
“Make yourself at home,” Jaskier said, while turning around and opening a dresser. “I’ll just take a minute.”
Geralt’s lips twitched up. “Sure,” he said, voice dripping with sarcasm and fondness.
As predicted, it took Jaskier decidedly longer than a minute. He spent an unreasonable amount of time just to find the perfect doublet and then he plopped down in front of a mirror and began to comb his hair.
Geralt nudged him, until he scooted over on the chair, making room for Geralt to sit down next to him. It was a tight fit and Geralt had to wrap an arm around Jaskier’s waist to keep him from falling off. Years ago, Jaskier would have  complained that like this, he wasn’t able to move properly to do his hair. Oh, who was Geralt kidding, years ago, he himself wouldn’t have been confident and comfortable enough to hold Jaskier like this. Now though, with Jaskier melting into his touch and his head beating faster, Geralt wanted to do nothing more than wrap him in his arms as often as he could.
“You don’t need to do this, you know,” Geralt said softly, nuzzling into Jaskier’s neck and glancing at their reflection in the mirror. They looked good together. “We could just go.”
“No!” Jaskier gave him an affronted look. “This is a once in a lifetime experience, Geralt!”
“It can’t be that great,” Geralt murmured, earning himself a playful swat to the chest.
“Oh, you say that now,” Jaskier said, using what Geralt had dubbed his professor-voice, “But I’m telling you, it is. I can still remember when I got my first specs. It was fantastic. I could actually read my own writing without having to squint! I could see trees, Geralt. Trees!”
A laugh bubbled up in Geralt’s chest, as Jaskier gestured wildly with his brush. Then again, he had no room to judge. He too remembered the first time he had seen Jaskier with his glasses. Geralt had wanted to surprise him by showing up in one of his lectures. At the end, he had been the one who ended up surprised, when he saw the thin metal frames on Jaskier’s face and watched how easily the bard read his notes, without having to hold them up to his face, as he did on the Path. Jaskier had looked so much more relaxed, when he didn’t need to squint. His words had flown more easily, when he didn’t have to concentrate that hard to decipher the words.
Geralt understood why Jaskier didn’t wear the specs on the Path, of course. With how many times Geralt had to throw Jaskier to the ground to get him out of the way of a wyfern’s claw, his glasses would have broken a hundred times over. So he only used them while teaching in Oxenfurt or whenever he managed to convince Geralt to take a little break from witchering. Which he managed to do surprisingly often. Or not surprisingly, if you believed Eskel, who claimed that Jaskier had Geralt wrapped around his little finger.
Case in point, it had taken Jaskier only a small lecture to convince Geralt to get his eyes checked as well, once the bard had realised that Geralt was stepping weirdly close to the notice boards to read them and that he was dilating his pupils more often than any other witcher Jaskier met.
“My point is,” Jaskier continued, “there is only one chance of you to see me with glasses for the first time and I want to look good.”
Geralt’s reply was so grumbling that Jaskier wasn’t able to understand.
“What was that?”
“I said you always look good.”
“Darling,” Jaskier said, putting his free hand on his heart dramatically, “You flatter me, but we both know it’s not true.”
“Didn’t you just say you looked good even when you just woke up?”
“Oh, you know that was a joke,” Jaskier said with a huff. "Besides, you've seen me covered in that gross stuff -"
"Endrega entrails," Geralt supplied helpfully, which earned him a glare.
"I did not need the remainder. Point is, it was disgusting, and I was covered in it, so that's proof that I don't always look good."
Geralt gave him a long look. “You do to me” he said finally, softly. “You were only covered in that gunk because you ran after me to help me. There's nothing more beautiful than that.” Nothing more beautiful than realising that Jaskier didn't just care about him, but that he would risk his life for him - that he loved him back.
Jaskier’s lips parted, but nothing came out. His eye softened, when he took in Geralt’s sincere expression. “Oh you lovely, lovely man.” He leaned in, pressing a chaste kiss against Geralt’s cheek. “Alright then. If you’re so adamant, we can go.”
He stood up, put on his own pair of specs and took Geralt’s hand.
Geralt let himself be pulled out of the accommodation and through the streets of Oxenfurt, until they finally arrived at the place where a middle-aged woman had checked his eyes the week before. Almost immediately after Jaskier had knocked on the door, it opened and the woman from before ushered them inside, smiling widely and hurrying to the back of the room, where she must keep the new glasses.
It was silly for Geralt’s heart to beat faster, as he stepped inside. Silly, to fear Jaskier’s reaction to seeing him wearing specs. Jaskier had never criticised Geralt’s yellow, inhuman eyes before. Never called them freaky or disgusting. Yet a part of Geralt couldn’t help but wonder if the glasses would draw more attention to this inhuman feature.
When the woman handed him the glasses, he took them without thinking.
“Go on then,” the woman said encouragingly. “Try them on.”
Geralt glanced at Jaskier, who was beaming up at him, looking uncontainably excited for some reason. When Geralt hesitated, Jaskier touched his arm gently and gave it a light squeeze. All the while, he kept looking at Geralt’s eyes as if they were the most beautiful thing.
It was all the reassurance that Geralt needed. He put on the glasses and -
“Oh.” It was all Geralt could say, before a startled laugh escaped him. This - he had no idea what he had expected, but it wasn’t this. There were sharp edges everywhere . When he looked through the window, he could actually read the sign above the shop on the opposite side of the street. And when he looked at Jaskier -
“Oh,” he repeated, softer this time. Without thinking, he lifted his hand and brushed Jaskier’s hair behind his ear, so he could see him better. “You have freckles,” was the first thing that came to mind. His hand caressed Jaskier’s cheeks, which were speckled with freckles like the night sky was speckled with stars. “You have wrinkles-”
“Excuse me!” Jaskier gasped in mock-offence, but the wrinkles - the laugh lines - around his eyes deepened. “You’re using your power for evil! You -”
“You’re beautiful.” There was a speck of brown in Jaskier’s otherwise blue eyes. A barely visible scar above his lips. Intricate embroidery around his collar. And so much warmth in his gaze that it took away Geralt’s breath.
“I take it you like being able to see better?” Jaskier teased.
“Hmm.” Geralt’s lips twitched. “Is there anything I should do to my ears to make your singing sound better too?”
Jaskier squawked, but it was interrupted by his own laughter. Before he could form an indignant reply, Geralt said, “Thank you. For noticing I needed specs.” He leaned in, placing the softest of kisses on Jaskier’s lips. “You’re beautiful,” he repeated.
He couldn’t wait to finally be able to truly appreciate Jaskier’s expensive doublets. Couldn’t wait to see him clearly, when he was lost in the joy of composing. Couldn’t wait to put on his glasses in the morning and see Jaskier blink up at him with tousled hair and sleepy eyes.
He couldn’t wait to actually see the world together with Jaskier.

The Main 6 as AJR songs(pt.1): The Click
A/N: I have no idea who is going to care about this, but character analysis through songs is one of my favourite activities and combining two of my biggest hyperfixations at the moment seems like a good way to combat seasonal depression so, enjoy this mini headcanon series.(spoiler for all routes of course)
Asra: Turning Out
youtube
Starting off, for Asra "Turning out" really strikes me as the song that could desrcibe how disoriented they must have felt during the first few months of the Apprentice's resurrection.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These two verses could just really be talking about Asra's feelings at the start where the Apprentice doesn't recognise them and the surprise of the ritual not working the way it was supposed to. All of the questions they could have asked themselves:
"Am I ready to be their lover or friend?"
"Do you have instructions?"
"Where do I go from here?" are all things they would be wondering about how to best approach this, how can they go back to the way they and the MC were before.
And of course the themes of unexpected or unrequited love that deviates from storybooks, pop up. This is NOT a fairytale, this is a very traumatic, very fragile situation Asra is in, where they aren't a normal couple with Mc, where this is really anything but a love story, actually slowly evolving more into a romantic tragedy as they don't know how to approach the Mc. Sometimes not even as a friend or lover but simply falling into the role of a "Master" or teacher.
Tumblr media
Especially with this part, I can really see it as an entire internalised conversation in Asra's mind, with the version of MC they're familiar with.
Shouldn't they wait before they give up?
Don't they want to see the Mc get better?
Don't they want to wait and see if the Apprentice will love them again.?
And how everything is turning out in the end?
This is a song deep into the frustration and dissapointment coming out of a love you can't predict and at the same time a relationship you desperately want to make work exactly the way you want to, which works pretty well in this scenario.
Nadia: Burn The House Down
youtube
This song specifically i feel like fits Nadia SO MUCH. Aside from the political themes that are spread all around it, I really want to talk about lines like:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Knowing how Pre Red Plague Era, Nadia had this toned down role in Vesuvia, blending behind Lucio's shadow as nothing more than an observer, this would be her train of doubts about her potition and if she herself as a Countess can make actual difference to better the city. It's these doubts that held her behind in fear of people once again ignoring and sidestepping her, much like how in Prakra she felt a similar way with her family.
These doubts later on also follow her throughout her own route, when she has the chance to prove herself to her city and be the leader it deserves.
As well as:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which just fits fits so much with the Courtiers situation and the corrupt polititians that overran Vesuvia while she was in her coma state. This also fits Lucio and how he was only parading the role of the Count while scheming, hiding, stricking deals while the only things he did for the city were to constanly keep up appearances and throw parties.
Overall the theme of stopping the circle of letting other people rule over your life and deciding to take charge and work WITH others to better the situation around you, whether political or not are all really resonating with Nadia. It's a great "pumping up" motivational song that describes her journey and personal growth as a Countess and a person.
Julian: Weak
youtube
(For those who know AJR or actually have heard this song: Come on.....what did you expect? XD)
The overarching theme of succumbing to your bad habits is LITERALLY indicative of Julian's whole route. How he resorts to drinking, punishing himself, overindulging in bad company and every other coping mechanism he uses are there in the lyrics:
Tumblr media
Small mention to how "one kiss, bad for me" could very well refer to the apprentice and how he has to distance himself from them, but at the same time can't seem to be able to fully detatch. He's a wanted man, there is no way that getting involved in a romance that can never be isn't going to hurt him, right?
Especially i feel like this song fits him so well exactly because Julian KNOWS all this, he's said it himself:
Tumblr media
Julian understands that he is ruining himself, that he is hurting others while doing it, that he should say no to the dark thougths in his mind and all the bad impulses BUT he also has convinced himself that he's not strong enough for that and keeps going back to the same bad habits.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the end this is a party anthem and we know Julian to be a party person himself, so he hypes it up. "What's wrong with that?" as well as the whole mood of the song could very well be him actively trying to convince everyone and himself, that...he's "weak", it's just who he is and he can't change. That way he can push people away and scare them off with how " iredeemable" he is and how he's just going to keep making mistakes. All because he just doesn't want to take anyone down with him....
Tumblr media
I also want to make quick reference to "Sober Up" and this lyric that's also giving strong Julian vibes with the MC helping him get out of his head.
Muriel: I'm not Famous
youtube
OK while this song doesn't melodically give me huuge Muriel vibes, the lyrics are thematical to his whole hermit situation.
This man put a magic curse ON HIMSELF that makes people forget that they even met him, except the people he gives something to remember him by, meaning the people closest to him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like literally Muriel never has to worry about people talking about him, where he lives, what he likes to do, what are his habits or bother him anymore and that's described here like his personal paradise.
Which honestly makes so much sense if you take into consideration what his past used to be like. The trauma he endured by being in the Colissium and having everyone watch the worst version of himself EVERY SINGLE DAY, definetely warrants seeing almost complete isolation as bliss.
(Also noone hates him, he's our gentle giant that deserves the world fandom-wise and he's adored by everyone who DOES know him in Vesuvia.)
Honestly i feel like this song could very well be Muriel's personal diss towards Lucio, which is very funny to think about:
Tumblr media
Muriel is a hermit and yet he is more loved and acknoledged for who he is than Lucio will ever be (according to Muriel's route anyway). Lucio was loud, the main attraction for many, the centre of attention and yet people in the majority "judge" him and have seen all of his personal failures out on display because he chose to parade around trying to show that he was the best.
Muriel finds comfort in being unknown and has never been afraid to express that. He apprieciates the people in his life that matter which is exactly why this song fits this well.
Portia: Drama (/Turning Out)
youtube
youtube
Maybe i'm cheating with this one but I cannot talk about Portia without refering to both of these songs.
For starters, Drama: Now it's well known that Portia is an undisputed gossip queen. The woman has an entire map drawn out of secret passages scattered around the palace that STILL isn't fully finished, she knows the entire palace staff by name and she's not too unfamiliar about any street rumors or juicy stories. Point being: she goes around.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The song describes how we can become envolved to other people's drama and get caught up in their stories so much it's addicting.
Now regardless of what perspective we see Portia from, one thing is clear: She wants excitement out her life and to get to do adventurous things of her own. Unfortunately though, because of her obligations and role she is instead "addicted" to other people's stories and shines through others.
In every story except her own she is just there, observing, seeing what happens next and contributes as much as she can because she can't be fully a part of it herself.
Tumblr media
Only in her own route does she get to actively be an important part of the story and the "Drama", getting out of the mindset of being a background character, take action and voice her opinions.
Tbh i haven't fully finished her route but so far i can at least understand this: Portia needs an opportunity to shine as her own person, and this song perfectly portrays that.
As for Turning Out, I just can't keep out of my head Portia saying these lines to Julian:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think Portia was so genuinely hurt by Julian leaving her behind in Nevivon and telling him all this would just hit SO HARD, especially since she grew up with and I think really admired him. Nevemind the fact that she was very close to losing him again with the execution , which makes these lyrics sting all the more.
That and the themes of growing up and getting your head out of stories and fairytales you read really sounds perfect for her character.
Lucio: The Good Part
youtube
Well what can i say, The Good Part is loud, energetic but at the same time just so pensive, which fit pretty good on Lucio if you think about it.
The entirety of the song and lyrics keep referring to skipping to the best part of your life and keep wondering when that actually is. Lucio is a complex character which I love but so much is apparent about him: He wants to be respected and he wants power. The thing is he isn't always going to work too hard to achieve it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
His impentience as to when he'll be leader of his tribe is what drives him to the demon bargain that would make his parents sick and supposedly "skip" all of the proving himself as worthy of it and directly place him right on top. That behaviour later on continues with his deals with the Courtiers and then the Devil himself.
Tumblr media
And then later on even when he actually becomes a Count he still keeps showing off, throwing over-the-top parties and trying to give all the best things to his court and people. He keeps trying to make every moment the "Good Part" of his life constanly thinking he can go even more respected and loved as a ruler, even seeking to overthrow the Devil in some routes.
Lucio for all his skills and passion lacks patience and the ability to think ahead, jumping into situations that will get him where he wants to be all the faster. The song doesn't wholly describe his motivations and personality but it definetely hits on that particular aspect of him.
ShoutOut to familial issues:
Tumblr media
______________________________________________________________
Annnd that's it, hoping to continue in Pt.2.
P.S Please go and listen to AJR folks they have some really deep, heartbreaking and thought-provoking stuff.

Introducing: Apollo!
Apollo is my fan made NWTB ego based off of the album Sandcastle Kingdoms by NateWantsToBattle. I’ll explain his backstory and powers here, and his backstory will be split up into what I came up with based on each song in SK.
His backstory and powers are below the cut!
-Backstory Section-
Branded: His backstory starts with him being a popular but struggling behind the scenes music artist, selfish and experiencing creative burnout, believing that while he is well off, he’s in a sort of hell in his life. “Shine so bright this star’s gonna burn out.”
StopRewind: This one is him thinking about wanting to be something more than what he is now. He thinks he isn’t deserving of his popularity and money and everything, and he realizes that he’d rather start over. “When’d I become my own enemy?”
Live Long Enough to Become the Hero: This song is the one where he actually gets isekai’d! In my opinion, the lyrics are about how happy he is to finally have to at second chance he wanted and to start over. He also was very unsure about the new world he was in, since he didn’t really mean that he wanted to start over in a whole new world when he wanted to start over. His main intention was start over his career, but… hey, being a prince of a kingdom made of sand isn’t that bad, right? “My whole world was crumbling down, but I’ll still mend… I’ve found the strength and now I know where I can confide.”
To the Ends of the Earth: Again, this one still takes place in the isekai world he’s in. He’s reflecting on his feelings of happiness about being here, and is also thinking about the lengths he’ll go to be able to stay. Even if it meant fighting, which through training he can do now, he would fight to stay in his “perfect world.” “I’ll fight and defend, I’ll see this out till end.”
Heroes Never Die: Now he’s becoming increasingly arrogant and cocky in his abilities, since he’s spent a lot of time in this world and has fought a lot of beings and people, not just to stay, but for his kingdom, his people. “You don’t call the shots, don’t you tell me when I’m done (Live it up, this life is amazing!)”
Perfect by Design: This song is the turning point in the album, starting the “depressing/sad” songs. This is when he realizes that the world he’s been sent to isn’t perfect as he thought for so long, in fact, as with his old world, it is extremely flawed. He starts to become depressed and closed off, a far cry from what he was just a few months before. He also feels immense guilt for his actions in the past in order to stay in this “perfect world.” He thinks that maybe his old life wasn’t that bad, as he had friends, fame, money. Not that he doesn’t have that now, he has the fame and the money, but not really the friends. As the prince of this kingdom he has a great amount of responsibilities and friends don’t really fit that well into them. “A million strangers walking past and stare… Open up the door I’m leaving soon… How did this get underneath my skin… Let me know when it’s all said and done.”
I’d Love to Break It to You: This one still is kind of depressing, but more aggressive than Perfect by Design is. He’s spiraling more into his negative thoughts, believing he’s completely alone, and that everyone will forget him. He’s starting to become more aggressive himself, taking it out on others and even his people. “Parading like you own the place, give it time we’ll all forget your face.”
All I See: This goes back to that “depressing” theme I’ve been mentioning. Unlike I’d Love to Break It to You, All I See goes back to being not very aggressive, like Perfect by Design but a bit faster at times.
We Are Ignited: This one isn’t really aggressive, but to me it feels like Apollo deciding that he wants to go back to his old world, now wanting better days than he has now. He wants to forget the plethora of enemies he made in his so called “perfect world” as well. “You ventured off, no turning back, you’ve gone astray… The room’s too small to spread his wings out and take flight,”
Sandcastle Kingdoms: Before Apollo can make it out of his kingdom and the other world, a disaster happens. A large tidal wave was displaced somehow (don’t ask), and it completely washed over his kingdom. Some thought that before it happened, a wave from the Ocean of Dreams would bring destruction to the kingdom, but nobody believed them. That caused it to fall, as it was made of sand itself. When the tidal wave hits, it destroys the buildings and a lot of civilians drown, and Apollo also drowns there. “But all kingdoms drown, as tides bring them down… The subjects stay loyal, but don’t wait their turn; Now, blindly they follow their king to the fray, but he has no action and they have no say!”
TLDR; He got fucking isekai’d..
Powers: I wanted to give him some powers. He didn’t have them in his original world, but in the other one he does, and when he woke back up in his “old world,” he kept them. He can control and manipulate sand, water and light. When using his sand or light powers, his eyes glow yellow/orange, and when using his water powers, they glow blue.

Admin I absolutely LOVE the outfits you give Yui and I wish she had that fashion sense! Even so, have you ever thought of rating Yui’s official outfits? I would love to hear your opinion♡
// Aww, thank you! I've always been interested in fashion, so I guess I'm trying to give Yui things that will suit her best. Also, sure, sounds fun! (ෆ˙ᵕ˙ෆ)
1. Dark Fate
This is probably a very popular opinion, Yui's best outfit is without a doubt her DF one! It actually looks modern and like something a teenager would truly wear. The high-waisted shorts definitely flatter Yui's figure, and I love how her shoes and socks match her shorts and blouse perfectly!
Tumblr media
2. Lost Eden
Everyone knows I'm not a big fan of LE, but I have to admit that this outfit looks great on her! Maybe I'm just saying that because many girls here, including myself, dress like that, and even though it's very simple, it has a fresh vibe to it! My only complaint is that the skirt is far too short, which wouldn't normally be a problem but Yui is Miss Clumy and falls down numerous times in LE (and in general), so I get second-hand embarrassment, lol.
Tumblr media
3. Chaos Lineage
I'm a huge pink lover, I like how they made her outfit look formal but really comfortable. The dress gives me vintage vibes, which is a plus, and I love the socks and shoes; look at those cute pearls! Overall, the outfit is good, but I would have preferred it if they gave Yui a blazer to make it look less plain in comparison to the Diaboys' attires.
Tumblr media
4. Vandead Carnival
This outfit is definitely… something. It’s not ugly for sure but it simply doesn’t give me Yui vibes. I’m not saying Yui has to only dress in pink, and it’s not like she’s canonically stylish either but those colors are way too dull for her. I believe it would have looked better if she tucked that shirt in that baggy skirt. Perhaps not wearing black leggings and having different shoes would have saved this outfit? At least it looks alright in cgs.
Tumblr media
5. Lunatic Parade
I’m feeling bad for rating this one so low because I love LP so much but this outfit isn’t the best choice for her. Both pieces of clothing aren't bad; in fact, I like the ribbons on the jacket; however, the colors don't really suit Yui. Perhaps it isn't very visible here because promotional pictures are always brighter, but Yui's skin in the game has warm tones, and in some cgs, her skin and hair are exactly the same color as the dress, which doesn't give me an aesthetically pleasing image at all, since it’s way too… dry. Also, why were those black thigh-high socks included? It also bothers me that the shoes don't go with anything.
Tumblr media
6. Haunted Dark Bridal/More Blood
Come on everyone, let’s act surprised! I already mentioned why I dislike this outfit but I’ll do it again. The pieces of clothing aren’t that hideous, the sweater would have been sort of cute if she took a high waisted skirt and tucked it there. As for the shorts, they are… okay? They would have worked better with plenty of shirts. Adding those orange/light-brown boots was atrocious, it’s not that they’re ugly, they just make the outfit look chaotic because pink, brown and orange isn’t really the most fitting combination for Yui.
(I remember editing once a full body version but I can’t find it anymore PAIN)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wanted to include the school uniforms and other outfits, but the ones shown above appear in most cgs, after all. Still, I adore her black uniform; it makes Yui look really good! 💕

Deranged Ramblings of A Technoblade fan
Ok I don't know how to blog for shit and I've not slept in two days so yall are now gonna suffer as I throw out my thoughts to the universe.
Technoblade, the character, is often depicted as wearing a corset and while I've not seen anyone complain about it being "unrealistic" because lets be real here the SBI is made up of a perpetually tired bird man, a bard with a habit of destroying countries, a vaguely anthropormorphised to straight up anime elf prince pig depending on the artist, and a Tommy; a corset is the LEAST of one's worries ya know?
Anywho, corsets on a warrior. Being a semi-qualified art historian and an enthusiast in fashion and medieval armour, it is ACTUALLY plausible!
As the common discourse goes, a PROPERLY FITTED and NON-TIGHTLACED corset is actually very comfortable to wear. They were literally designed to support the chest and help with posture despite the common modern idea of the corset being cruel and blah blah blah literally everyone who's worn a proper corset can vouch that it's actually quite comfy. (Myself included, shut up men can wear corsets too.) And depending on the type of corset, they can be very flexible to allow for movement. The type of corset would be the one to look at when determining realism, in this case we got full corsets that are kinda like vests, underbust corsets, and mid corsets. Your full size corset provides the most support as it distributes the weight of the bust around your waist and shoulders, with some types of underbusts doing similar. Seeing as unless c/Techno has a bust size in need of support, this probably isn't gonna be the one worn most in battle as, while corsets can be moved pretty easily in, they were not made in the intention to be worn into battle.
An underbust would be more flexible and still provide any sort of support, and a mid-torso corset probably wouldn't provide the same amount of support but would still help with supporting one's back, especially when riding a horse or walking for a long time and trust me good back support is a BOON when you're wearing armour. On that front, while a corset that has boning made of baleen, metal, or bone might provide some protection to slashing attacks, and distribution of impact to an extent, against an arrow/axe/well placed sword strike, not great. That's the point of wearing a gambison and armour in general. A gambeson acts as a means of keeping armour from touching the skin and chaffing, as well as providing an extra layer of squish between the body and the weapon. You can actually just wear a gembeson when fighting in a pinch, it won't exactly protect against an axe or flail or mace or arrow, but much like a corset slashing damage will be diminished.
So, as for wearing a corset while also wearing armour, to look fashionable but still provide protection, I would say the best way to do so would be to wear a mid-torso corset with a gambeson style interior, and a crop top style gambeson over the top and half-breast plate over that. Would I wear it into battle? Absolutly not. Would it provide protection during a display of power in a parade? Yes. Is it better than nothing? Also yes. Am I going to draw this at some point? Absofuckinlutely! The more likely form, and one that would be very interesting to see that I have yet to see any artist (so far) make, would be a wasp-waist style of breastplate armour. At that point you basically have a full on metal corset that's way more effective than just wearing the weirdly layered bits of corsetry and armour that was previously mentioned. Anyways, I am sleep deprived and have definitley missed a few points but I hope whoever has read this enjoyed the ramblings ok goodnight.

Note
i also think people have deeply unrealistic expectations for how celebrities (or just anyone really) should react when being called out aggressively by thousands of people. people are saying the dunes guys are horrible people for being defensive and it's like... it genuinely does not matter how in the right or in the wrong you are, if you have that many people coming at you making it sound like you murdered a person for something that, while not great, wasn't THAT bad, of COURSE you're gonna react badly to it. it's human nature.
1000% this. That's really the long and short of this; I think there was a very brief period of time when social media provided a sort of open forum between fans and artists but that's sort of evaporated now because of how quickly people jump to the most intense aggressive betrayed language possible.
It's also just such a poor fit for that style of band/community; idk how to explain this but just looking at the bands and scenes those guys come from, I feel like a positive constructive tone (and fewer comments at that) would have landed much better. Pretty much all of them are probably veterans at having random people turn on them for arbitrary shit related to music, it doesn't shock me at all that they're not taking it seriously. Like do people think Frank Iero, who has been on social media since the Black Parade era of MCR, is going to treat "my own fans are mad at me and being weird to my band because they think we're much closer than we actually are" with anything else other than casual dismissal? I just can't see that happening.
