(Book binding anon) Anon has been given blessings to ramble? *deep inhale* Cindy perfectly encapsulates everything, and I do mean everything, that I have missed from so many fairy-tales, love stories, and fanfictions in the past decade or so. Every character is so lovingly simple--like, everyone involved has their flaws and strengths and a strong voice in and of themselves, but the prose is to the point and simple for their mannerisms, movements, and actions. For all the big, grand things that everyone does (or has done, looking at you, Mrs. Queen), the narrative always treats them as a person making choices. (Just a Lil Guy, if you will.) Which! Is! The Point! Of Cinderella!!! She is amazing because she has always always always chosen to be kind despite the shit going on, and the narrative subtly reinforcing that at every turn not JUST through lawn-chair-sitting author and their impeccable and funny inserts DIRECTLY calling out Cinderella, but in how it frames every character? The Prince's reflections? The slow understanding of everyone around the two of them how powerful that can be if you take the moment to think about it? Amazing!!! (Know that if I could put more exclamation marks and even more synonyms for "amazing" here without cluttering things, I would.) I remember as a kid finding book series like Skulduggery Pleasant which made use of short descriptive phrases and formatting (almost screenplay-esque?), and it read so easily; I'm always delighted to find things that make similar use of the dashes and ellipses to really hit home that cozy conversationalist tone. I can hear every character! Every! One! And there's JUST enough similarity to the way lawn-chair-sitting author speaks for that doubly nice reminder that yeah, we are sitting in their backyard getting told a fun story. Can we also appreciate that set-up? How it parodies so many funny retellings or strangely modern ones, sure (Masterpiece Theatre anyone? Does anyone else remember the horse lady?), but the readers aren't being talked to as kids? Like...lawn-chair-sitting author is tired, man. But they're hopeful. All their asides and inserts and descriptions feel like they're scooting to the edge of their chair to look me in the eyes and ask drunkenly but earnestly, "life fuckin sucks sometimes. But sometimes it's also good. This is my reminder." and sprinkling in all those other classic reminders of all kinds of other morals that make fairy tales so comforting. And! And and AND! It's so! Loving!!! To Cindy!!! I love the bits where the narrative "gives her space," builds her up even though she can't hear, lets her feel, and gets angry f o r her!!! It's just...it's so rare to find pieces where the characters are really, truly loved. Every time I reread it I feel like the story as a whole is just setting a big blanket on Cindy's shoulders and vicariously hugging her through the family she builds. Cindy and the Prince? The build up? The awkward second meeting? The constant communication? The quiet understanding? The build up of e v er y o n e 's eventual friendships??? The whole thing is just...so genuine and loving. I want to gush more, but at this point, trying to put how much I adore it into words just has me sitting at my keyboard making little grabby hands. Much love for your writing style, from the voice you have to the descriptions you use. They're all really wonderful, and when I get this thing bound, I'll send pictures <3
Sorry it's taken me a while to respond to this. I've just been reading it over and over.
I've never read Skullduggery Pleasant! I remember hearing vaguely about it online as a kid in the late 2000's/early 2010's, but I always thought it was a webcomic or something!
It's a little embarrassing to recall it now, but I actually did drunkenly tell a version of Cinderella from a deck chair... I want to say back in 2014? It was actually Sapsorrow from Jim Henson's "The Storyteller," which is closer to Donkeyskin, which uses the whole "Dress the color of the sky/Dress the color of the Sun/Dress the Color of the Moon" mechanic. We were *all* drunk and also passing a bong around but even then I was like... totally thrown off by people actually paying attention to me??? It always stuck with me, but I honestly wasn't even thinking about that time when I made that initial Cindy post. It only really came back to me around chapter 6, and I was like "Oh--this is like that time!!"
But the voice and the sense of spontaneity was very important to me throughout the whole thing. It still like... hits me that the story still emotionally affects people two years later--and I'm not saying that because I'm over it or anything! It's just... easy to kind of feel like you're not doing enough creatively when everything is 'content content content--are you putting out enough content?' these days. It's just... really affecting to be hit with "you floated this out into the world and it means something to people." It really means so much to me.
Thank you so much, I really mean that.

With Heaven Above You - Part 4
Summary: The team take a closer look at Reid’s findings to see if they can figure out where he might have been taken. Y/N feels tremendous guilt for putting him in this position, but finding something peculiar gives them their first clue…

Word Count: 1.9k
Notes: Thank you so much again! Can’t believe all the nice comments I’ve had so far. Makes my heart swell 😊
Between the team the photograph must’ve been analysed a few thousand times. Each member kept requesting to look at it, picking it up and studying it under various light sources across the BAU. You had only looked at it the once. That was enough. The truth was that they weren’t going to find what they were looking for from the photo. It was just you taking off your microphone after the press conference. So it was highly likely that the unsub had been there, watching. JJ was making multiple phone calls to try and find the details of everyone who had signed up to be there. The truth was more harrowing. You knew that a mere 30 seconds after that picture was taken, Spencer had come over and given you a hug. A moment that you believed at the time to be private. But he had seen it. He had seen your Spencer. And he had taken him.
It was well into the night before any of you started to leave. Everyone had been running around, making phone calls, printing things off, going through case files. But you had just been sat at Spencer’s desk, curled up in his chair. You desperately were trying to think about what you could do. It was Emily who startled you out of your dream state.
“Hey, y/n, come crash with me tonight, okay? You need to try and get some sleep.”
You wanted to protest but it was no use. “Yeah, sure thing Em. Can we stop over at mine and grab a couple of things first?”
She looked a little hesitant at first. “Um, sure. But only quickly.”
From that moment on you acted without thought. It was as if a robot had taken over your body, moving your legs, walking you to the car. You couldn’t think about anything as you did it.
“Are you sure you don’t want me to get your things for you?” Emily’s voice made you jump. You hadn’t registered the entire car ride, and suddenly you were outside your apartment.
“No, but maybe come with me?” She nodded at the suggestion. You knew as soon as you walked in you were going to be wrapped up in all things him, and you weren’t sure if you could handle all the emotion.
Emily took your key from you and unlocked the door. She switched on the hall light and stepped into the apartment first, cautiously. You realised this wasn’t the first time Emily had walked into a home feeling unsettled, apprehensive. She knew just what it was like to come home and know that it wasn’t the way you left it. “I’m going to grab some of Reid’s case files to have a look at. You get what you need, take your time.”
“Thank you, Emily,” you tried to smile but your face couldn’t do it. You were so lucky to have such a wonderful friend, and one day you’d be able to show her just how much it meant to you. But not today.
You walked around uncertain, not sure what to look for. The sensible part of you was saying go pack a bag, get your things, and leave. You lingered in the living room for a few minutes, taking in all the things that reminded you of him. You saw the answering machine was flashing red. Was it really a good idea to check the message? It was probably something mundane, a cold caller. But there was a small possibility that it was him. Maybe an explanation? Your finger edged tentatively over the button. It took a few seconds before you pressed down and waited to hear what was coming next.
You’ve reached the home of Agent Y/F/N and Dr Spencer Reid, an all too familiar voice said, we can’t come to the phone right now because we’re probably fighting crime or playing chess. Leave a message after the beep!
What followed next was not what you expected. It was an almost silent message, but you could just about make out someone breathing. Some long, drawn out breathing. It lasted for about ten seconds and then the message cut out. Before you could call out a voice made you jump.
“When was that left?” Emily asked, suddenly behind you.
You squinted at the display on the machine. “This afternoon.”
“I’m going to forward this over to Garcia and see what she can get from it, you go and get the rest of your things.”
You nodded and walked into the bathroom. It was ridiculous to say that you could recognise Spencer’s breathing, but you were certain that wasn’t him on the tape. Which made it all the more unsettling as to who it actually was. Feeling tightness in your chest, you rushed over to the sink and turned on the cool water. You cupped your hands under the stream and splashed your face a few times, until the tight feeling went away. Get it together, y/n. You must do this. You need to focus.
After a few deep breaths you turned off the tap. You reached over to grab a towel from the radiator to dry your face when you saw a book lying on the bathroom floor. You crouched down to pick it up and admired it in your hands. The pages were all frayed and torn. It had been laid next to the radiator to dry after a night a few weeks ago.
“Hey! Y/N be careful, this is a first edition. I can’t take it back to the library covered in soap!”
“Listen Reid, you’re the one who decided to read during bath night. I can’t be liable for the damage that incurs.”
“Okay, fair point. But I thought you liked it when I read to you in Latin while you washed your hair? Weren’t you the one that said you wanted to learn a new language?”
“Yes Spence, a new language. A usable one. One that people still speak!”
“Statistically there are millions of people who can still read Latin. While it appears to be a dead language there is actually a large percentage of scholars and academics who use Latin in a variety of contexts… You always said you were interested in philosophy…”
“Yeah yeah, save me the lecture Dr Reid. You have until the bubbles run out to keep reading or else this book is going straight in the water…”
You were jolted out of your daydream by a knock on the door. “Y/N?” A concerned voice spoke up. “Are you okay in there?”
You quickly set the book back down and hurriedly grabbed your toothbrush and a hair tie. “Yeah Em, I’m coming now.” You made your way into the bedroom and grabbed a duffle bag. There was no thought to what you were packing, just random items that hopefully would make an outfit for the next day. You glanced over at Spencer’s pillow, his perfectly folded pyjamas, and decided to pack those as well.
It was truly painful to leave, but you knew it was for the best. By the time you made it to Emily’s it felt like it was almost morning. She poured you a large glass of wine and excused herself to go to bed, promising first that if you needed anything during the night to give her a call. You thanked her again and settled down on her sofa, wearing the buttoned-up pyjamas you’d taken from Spencer’s pillow. The glass of wine went down far too quickly, and you refilled it twice. Sleep was an impossibility at this point. You could already see morning light peaking through the gap in the curtains. That meant it wasn’t too long before you could go back to work and try and figure out what was next.
The truth was you already knew what you had to do. You were going to make another press conference, permission granted or not, and try and make yourself as appealing as possible. You were going to try and convince the career killer that the story would be far better if he took you as well as Reid. Imagine the headlines – two dead FBI agents, who were also in love! Caught in the crosshairs of the career killer! The best and most famous serial killer in the whole world! The papers would go wild for it. You knew deep down that the killer would, too. But it wasn’t going to play out that way. You were going to trade yourself for Spencer. Convince the killer it was you he really wanted. Tell him you’d give him whatever he wanted, help him put on a show. You’d let him kill you live on TV. You knew that you would do anything to get Spencer back.
You rehearsed your little inner monologue a few times. When you felt like you’d perfected it, you decided to try and think about something else for a few minutes. You remembered you’d taken the crossword puzzle book from Spencer’s desk. That would make a good distraction if he hadn’t finished them all already. You fumbled through the contents of your bag until you found it, along with a mechanical pencil. One of the corners had been turned over so you flicked the book open to that page.
Spencer had already started the crossword but hadn’t completed it. That confused you a little. It was very unlike him to leave a puzzle unfinished. You started to scan your eyes over the clues he had already filled in.
A six letter word for a season of the year synonymous with fall. Autumn. Easy. You glanced over to where Spencer had filled in the word. A-U-T-U-N-N. How had he managed to make that mistake? In all the years you knew him you hadn’t once seen a spelling error. You shrugged.
Next clue: Lion’s cry, four letters. Roar. Same again, you looked at where he’d filled it in. R-O-O-R. This couldn’t be a coincidence. You circled the incorrect letter, and the ‘n’ in autumn, and went back to the next clue.
A seven letter word for a pilot. Aviator. Spencer had filled in A-V-I-A-T-U-R. You circled the U.
Clearly reasoned, seven letters. Logical. Same spelling mistakes. L-O-J-I-C-A-L. That added a J.
Card game, five letters. Poker. P-O-K-A-R. A.
Woollen items, eight letters. Knitwear. K-N-T-T-W-E-A-R. T.
Organ of sight, 3 letters. Eye. E-Y-I. You circled and noted the I.
Desire to travel, ten letters. You had to look across at what Spencer had already written for this one. Wanderlust. But he’d spelt it W-A-N-D-E-L-R-U-S-T. Confused, you circled and noted the l and the R as they were both wrong.
He had only filled in one more clue. Calm-natured. Placid. But instead of a C, he’d written S. That left you with ten letters. You scrawled them down at the bottom of the page. N, O, U, J, A, T, I, L, R, S
N O U J A T I L R S.
What on Earth did that mean? You looked at it a few times through slightly blurry wine eyes. Why had he done this? You couldn’t quite understand what was going on. But there was something in you, a hunch, that he’d left this for you on purpose. Who else would piffle through his desk and take out a crossword book? There had to be some meaning to it. After exhausting yourself with possibilities, the tiredness took over, and you eventually fell asleep. You dreamt of those ten letters swirling around your head.
 End of part 4.

Ranking Every ONEUS Song Because I Have Opinions
I guess it’s time for me to embark upon this task. Come along for the ride if you’re so inclined.
This is by no means a definitive ranking, because that’s impossible and the consumption of music is an intrinsically personal experience. But I personally like ranking things for arbitrary reasons.
Each song is ranked in order, and within those rankings I’ve assigned Tiers. Enjoy.
Note: this includes only studio tracks officially released by RBW or KissEnt, which means I’m sadly not including the Road to Kingdom songs. Actually, wait, you wanna know what? The real reason I’m not including Road to Kingdom songs is because I’m still salty that my favorite song from that show is one that didn’t get a studio release. Justice for Warrior’s Descendant.
Let’s begin.
I’ll start things off with the top tier, the best of the best, my absolute favorite ONEUS songs. Now what should I name a tier that represents the pinnacle of what ONEUS can offer us?
Black-Haired Seoho Tier
1. “Valkyrie”
This song goes places. It's the one that made me fall in love with ONEUS and it's still my favorite, oops.
2. “Blue Sky”
"Blue Sky” defies genre to me. The first time I heard it, I was blown away. It has some of my favorite vocals AND two of my favorite raps in their discography - I love Leedo and Ravn's "ballad raps" in general but this is my favorite.
3. “BingBing”
So full of personality. Such an earworm. Emotional and kinda unsetlling lyrics. Xion speaking French? OKAY. It's title track worthy, for sure, so it's a shame it gets so overlooked by casual listeners. I’m glad the fanbase has at least given it the legendary status it deserves.
4. “Lost”
Was not expecting this one to enter my top ten with turbo boosters, but I started to listen to it a lot last year and in the process I started to feel things for this song that I previously have only felt for “Blue Sky”
5. “Plastic Flower”
It me.
6. “Rewind"
It’s all about the synth hook, to me. I am pathetically manipulable where good synth hooks are concerned. Also, the cadence and arrangement of this song reminds me of “Lost” and that’s never a bad thing.
7. “Dizzy”
I just feel like this is where they all shine as a vocal ensemble. Their personalities shine through in Dizzy, and I'm a sucker for that emotive sort of performing.
8. “Incomplete"
Right in a row here, you’ve got two sets of “my favorite song on the album” followed by “what I believe to be the best song on the album”. “Incomplete” is the best song on “DEVIL”. The lyrics are amazing and, this may sound weird, but as a Human in Their Thirties the lyrics hit even harder. Bonus points for guitar, as always.
9. “Dead or Alive”
I’ll never get over how strange and wonderful this song is, and yes I do believe it’s the best song on “LIVED”. (Vee shouts through a megaphone again about how “Dead or Alive” incorporates musical themes or lyrical elements from every other song on “LIVED” and hopes someone listens). Also (vee voice) guitars.
10. “Lit”
“Lit” just rules and I don’t believe there’s much I can add that has not already been said about it
Leedo Face Scrunch Tier
Now for those songs that are still my favorites, and make the world an immensely better place for existing, but don’t quite crack the ultimate ONEUS songs pantheon.
11. “No Diggity”
I'm a simple person, okay? I love bright and poppy songs but I'm also weak for unapologetic bangers, and "No Diggity" is an UNAPOLOGETIC BANGER. I think the guitars are (unsurprisingly) what takes this song to the next level for me. The arrangement in general is so impressive, and it’s obvious that they balanced it well to make use of all the members’ individual strengths. RIP my bias though.
12. “Crazy & Crazy”
The "Crazy & Crazy" appreciator has logged on! When Ravn said "hakuna matata 원하면 이뤄져 bibbidi-bobbidi-BOO", I felt that!!! If I ever get to go to a ONEUS concert and god forbid meet any of you there, I cannot be held responsible for how HAM I will go during this song.
13. “Hide and Seek”
I’m weak for this funky little bass-driven bop.
14. “Red Thread”
I don’t ever feel like I truly have gone in hard for a group until I start proselytizing their ballads to my unsuspecting friends. Ballads have a high barrier of entry in K-Pop especially, but my god!! MY GOD!!! This is a god-tier ballad.
15. “808″
They threw every single synth possible at the wall with “808″ and it absolutely sends me with how well it works. It’s undeniably “a Japanese single,” if you know what I mean, but even with that I think it’s one of their strongest title tracks. The chorus is endlessly singable, too, and that means a lot to me while I’m listening to it while doing the dishes, which I do a lot.
16. “Leftover”
I believe that Seoho and Ravn team songwriting will save our souls, and this song is one more reason to do so. I love that their songs aren’t just straight-up R&B (not that I don’t love R&B), and that there’s something very playful and unique about them.
17. “Zig Zag”
I’ll never forget you, “Zig Zag,” or the way Keonhee absolutely owns your vocals. In fact, if I had to assign an image song to every member I would most likely assign “Zig Zag” to Keonhee.  18. “Lion Heart"
As far as “weird little song” vibes go, “Lion Heart” really wins. Has undoubtedly one of the weirdest moments in any ONEUS song in the first post-chorus, and I’ll never shut up about the implied lore associations.
19. “Hero”
In every ToMoon's life, there is that indelible moment when they first heard Seoho's pre-pre-chorus vocals on "Hero" and suddenly realized so much about life and love and the nature of miracles. And, less dramatically, I love a good rap that uses the word biscuit.
Road to Kingdom Era Xion Tier
I became a Xion bias in Road to Kingdom era, so this is not meant disparagingly. These are those songs that show so much promise and goodness, and make me love them, but are kind of an acquired taste so to speak.
20, “BBUSYEO”
I always love BBUSYEO when it shuffles up, but I never like... seek it out, you know? Even if it is a bop. It’s just a silly little hetero love song that includes toilet humor, and it goes. I love that for it!
21. “Come Back Home”
It's all about the build up here. This song has such a beautiful arrangement that builds to something, dare I say, epic. Good background music for taking a dramatic walk when it’s like, -this- close to raining.
22. “To Be Or Not To Be”
This song works in the context of ONEUS mythology and lore but I tend not to really put it on my playlists if I'm simply wanting to experience an emotion or bust out some fun jams. It is a very strange time signature for a jam, but it’s too up-tempo to really be a mood setter.
23. “Intro: Time"
This intro is like... beautiful, but also kind of slutty, and I love that?
24. “A Song Written Easily”
It's good! It's fun! I really like it, I think it's lovely. But it’s not a song I’m going to rec to a friend and assume it will give them an adequate view of what ONEUS is. If anything I’d expect they’d just be like “that was really fun, but it just makes me want to listen to Blood Sweat & Tears.” “and I’d go “yeah me too.”
25. “Twilight”
I overplayed the fuck out of this song when I was first getting into ONEUS, so forgive me for ranking it low. Also, there is a high barrier of entry here for casual listeners even if it is a classic. Do you ever really think about how weird “Twilight” is? Like, the song structure? It’s very weird. I love it.
26. “Stand By”
I decided to make "Stand By" my charity case after seeing a few people dismiss it as their least favorite off Fly With Us, and I wound up loving it so much. That bridge is crazy good! Vocal line  blessing us.
27. “Intro: Fly Me to the Moon”
As far as intros go, this is god tier honestly. But it's still only an intro, and I always feel cheated out of a beautiful full song when I hear this. Like, even for an INTRO it feels short.
My Complicated Feelings About A Thousand Stars Tier
28. “A Thousand Stars”
I just made an entirely separate post about this.
That Overenthusiastic Thicc Ssam Ravn Made for Seoho That One Time Tier
Like, there’s a lot here. I like all the parts individually but something about them just doesn’t go down easily.
29. “Youth”
I’ll be honest, I love “Youth” and I think it’s an absolutely beautiful song with a great hook. I’m just firmly out of the demographic for it at this point and that’s a bit alienating. It’s also weak compared to other songs on “DEVIL”
30. “Intro: Devil is in the Details”
It’s a great intro that does some ambitious things, but on its own it doesn’t hold up as well. Intimidating.
31. “Intro: Lived”
I love Leedo and Ravn, but I don't like how this one opens. That said, I love the way this ends.
32. “White Night”
The fact that I had to rank this so low, when it's such a gorgeous ballad, drives home how many pure bangers ONEUS has. I love this song, but I don't really jam out to it, so it's lower in my ranking.
33. “What you doing?”
Please don’t judge me too harshly for this. I just feel like this song could have been performed by another group and there would have been no appreciable difference. I like Cosmik’s songs, but they’re not, in my opinion. the most ONEUS of the ONEUS songs. Which is weird since Cosmik is a bit synonymous with ONEUS. Anyway Keonhee sounds great in this song.
34. “Now”
Same as above, but this one has the added problem of never really going anywhere. That said, the bridge slaps.
35. “Airplane”
I guess one of the proper tracks on Lived had to rank low, and for me it's definitely Airplane. When I listen to it, I have fun, but it's very... how do I put this nicely? Generic. The stages elevated it, absolutely, and otherwise it might rank even lower sadly.
36. “I.P.U.”
I don’t know how to put this nicely, but the only way I want to listen to this song is if ONEUS is singing it in concert, at which point I can imagine it being very emotional. It’s a special song for special occasions and I’m not going to listen to it to have fun.
37. “Outro: Connect with US”
You’d think I’d love the government-assigned SeoJo song, wouldn’t you? I mean, it’s okay.
38. “Eye Contact”
By the time this song hits the chorus, it always gets me and I love it. But the verses leave something to be desired imo. It is firmly a mid-tier song to me, and I feel like this particular musical formula was much better in “Now.” Also please don’t make eye contact with me I have social anxiety.
ZigZag’s Cursed Live Audio Tier
Unfortunate.
39. “Level Up”
WHY is this song so low??? Every time I hear it start I get so hyped up, but I feel like it never delivers on that hype fully. It feels too mid-tempo and generic for what the mix promises. I don't know. I can't explain it. The bridge doesn't lead up to much and that always feels like a betrayal. And because it has so much potential I’m even more disappointed about that.
40. “Intro: Light Us”
I have absolutely no opinion about this intro
41. “English Girl”
I’m way too queer and old for this song. :/
42. “In My Arms”
I don't feel their personalities at all in this song, which makes it stand out from almost all their other tracks. It just doesn't sound like a ONEUS song, to me.
43. “Kiseki”
A rare song that I skip when shuffling through the ONEUS discography
44. “Koisii”
The other rare song I skip when shuffling through the ONEUS discography, but also I would fight it if given the opportunity.

This is gonna make so many horrible people unhappy. EVERY Takeover has had at least one match-of-the-year candidate on it. Some of the most emotional moments in that brand have come from cards that even aren't quite as good. I even considered not doing this list, because, by all accounts, NXT Takeover: Tampa isn't even going ahead. But then I thought, fuck it, let's celebrate, taken all together, for my taste, the best wrestling product in the history of mankind. It's not just moves; it's emotional investment, sharply-focused, character-based storytelling, intricately-performed spectactle from the greatest physical specimens ever to lace their boots. It FINALLY legitimized Western women's wrestling in the mainstream (Michelle McCool, Trish, Molly, Mickie, Jazz, Victoria, you all were stunning performers in your own right, but you and your kind were, until NXT, only given 3 minutes: the longest women's match IN HISTORY, until 'Mania 32, was Trish Stratus vs. Mickie James at Wrestlemania 22, and it got 9 minutes.), it's got some of the greatest tag wrestling ever seen on ANY brand, it's created the longest-drawn storytelling ever, it's the best of the indies, the best of the WWE, wrapped up in a sequence of shows that were epic without being FIVE FUCKING HOURS LONG.
Where do I even start...?
Honorable mention: Takeover: R Evolution (I have to, because I've only got 10) Sami Zayn spends over a year, clawing and sweating and tearing walls down, just to get to the top of the mountain in NXT. He has the opportunity to cheat, but does it his OWN way, as beautiful, unique babyface Sami Zayn...before being no-scoped by his best friend, who debuted THAT NIGHT. The undercard isn't as strong, so I can't officially include it, but this payoff, this triumph, and this tragedy represents everything the first era of NXT was, and kickstarted it, truly, onto its first golden era. So, properly, then...
10. Takeover: Rival If you leave this list feeling like the title reigns, and thus, ERAS, of Zayn/Owens are a little under-represented by it, I completely understand. After all, so much good came from that time. American Alpha soldifying themselves as the dominant tag team, the Iron-Woman match between Sasha and Bayley, Becky Lynch putting all the pieces together, Enzo and Cass actually being GOOD...it was, still, at its heart, a developmental brand at that time. It had indie megastars, yes, but it also had the likes of Bull Dempsey. And that's not a dig at Bull Dempsey, it's just that those early Takeovers were an eclectic mix of skill levels, which is what NXT was at that time. It was a place to showcase these people. That said, some of these cards were truly *fantastic.* Case in point: Takeover: Rival. Not only was the undercard completely stacked (Hideo Itami vs. Tyler Breeze over-delivered; we had the first and still SOMEHOW ONLY Fatal 4-Way match between the Four Horsewomen; and Finn Balor vs. Neville was a solid match of the year candidate), but the main event was the first step in one of the most storied rivalries in the history of wrestling: Zayn vs. Owens. The video package is one of the best NXT ever did, and the match...was a masterpiece of simple-but unexpected booking. Zayn mistimes a leap to the outside, hits his head, and Owens responds by powerbombing him over...and over...and over again, until the ref stops the match. Zayn loses nothing, because he was never pinned, Owens is made to look even MORE the loathsome monster, and Zayn's title reign ends after just a month, without the champion nor the championship devalued in any way. It showed that NXT knew, even then, how to reward fans for their emotional investment.
9. Takeover: Portland Right now, NXT feels like it's approaching the very end of a special time in its life. Like it's on the verge of hitting critical mass. One of either Gargano or Ciampa probably leaving the company after the next Takeover, and the reign of the Undisputed Era seems to be crumbling, too. In yesteryear, this would indicate a raft of very important call-ups, neccessitating a shift in the roster and a period of calm centered around more patient character-building. NXT's existence now as a third brand throws that formula into uncertainty, but it definitely feels like they're ramping up to a finale, because goddamn, this is NXT almost at a point of self-parody. Every match is so. MUCH. Lee/Dijakovic is the pinnacle of HOT wrestling (and Lee, will you marry me?) Bianca Belair breaks out as an actual superstar...just as Charlotte decides to visit and to ruin everything, which is just dreadful timing. Gargano/Balor being everything we need it to be, and also Balor pinning Gargano with his fucking dick. And the Broserweights being VERY DUMB...but also VERY, VERY GOOD. The only thing that lets this card down...and this is obviously subjective...is that NXT has almost come TOO FAR, now, in its delivery on its main events, in that every kickout starts to beggar belief. On the level of Triple H/Undertaker at Wrestlemania 28, in that I still love it, but...hoo, it can be exhausting. Depends on how much Ring of Honor you like in your gumbo, I guess, but it feels like everyone on the roster is racing toward Tampa to explode, like a wrestling Crisis on Infinite Earths, and then MAYBE...things can calm down. Just a hair. Y'know, if Tampa even...still happens.
8. Takeover: Philadelphia If there's one man that's become synonymous with NXT, it's Johnny fucking Wrestling. You know, what would happen if a meerkat put on muscle mass and became the best set-piece wrestler this side of Daniel Bryan. We knew since he started his tag team with Tommaso Ciampa that he was an exceptional wrestler, but it wasn't until Philadelphia, and his INSANE match with Andrade "Cien" Almas, that we saw him as truly the industry's next star. It was the first Takeover match to go over 30 minutes (Sasha/Bayley at Respect went EXACTLY 30, don't @ me), it was the first NXT match to get 5 stars from Dave Meltzer (if that matters to you), and it set a new bar for Takeover main events. And while the undercard doesn't live up to it, it's still loaded with excellent matches. A.O.P. vs. the Undisputed Era is something special. Shayna Baszler makes her Takeover debut, and while she's nowhere near her prime, it cemented her immediately. Velveteen Dream and Kassius Ohno have a very fun match, and Aleister Black and Adam Cole have a ludcriously stupid no-holds-barred match, featuring two men doing with chairs what no one ought to do with chairs. But as good as all of that is, it's really a one match show, but what a match, and Ciampa ending it by being an utter bastard yet again.
7. Takeover: Brooklyn I Does the first Brooklyn Takeover feature Canadian Destroyers, 18 kick-outs and "fight forever" chants? It does not. Does it create moments of wrestling happiness that are rarely, if ever, replicated? It sure does. Firstly, Blue Pants appears and helps the Vaudevillains defeat Blake and Murphy. Seems quaint to look back on it, but it made everyone SO goddamn HAPPY that night. If you're forgetting, Leva Bates (that wrestling librarian in AEW right now) was once a comedy jobber in NXT, who wore Blue Pants. Adorable. Ignore what happened on the main roster (which is something you'll probably have to do with a lot of these shows, I imagine), but the Vaudevillains were once incredibly over (I promise!), and their win was one of several beam-inducing moments from this stellar night. Samoa Joe destroyed Baron Corbin at the height of his game, Apollo Crews debuted brilliantly (again, ignore what happens next!) and Balor and Owens' ladder match was also fantastic. Also, what's Jushin Thunder Liger doing here?? Wrestling like he's in his early 30s, that's goddamn what!! But of course, the reason we're all here is Sasha Banks vs. Bayley, and...there's still something in my eye. Anytime people want to rag on NXT for being "predictable," remind them that giving the people a moment they've genuinely prayed for...is a good thing. Bayley besting Sasha Banks at her prime just made us all...so happy. All of us. Everyone. When that curtain call took place, it was so earned. The narrative of women's wrestling dominated most of 2015, and this moment, this match, was the apex of that narrative.
6. Takeover: Chicago I And speaking of feelings...hello, Ciampa, you godless fuck. And so begins maybe the actual greatest rivalry in all of NXT. It is truly an odyessy, with twists, turns, injuries, betrayals, wounds torn open, and this is the nexus point. Well, the seeds had already sort of been planted, because Triple H knows what he's doing. Ciampa almost ALMOST turns on Gargano after their terrific match in the Cruiserweight Classic, only for the team to die another day...and what a death it was. After a great ladder match, the two stand atop the ramp, and you think "will it happen?" And the absolute bastards show you the copyright logo, just to make you think the show ends there, because it always does, seconds after that happens. You unclench, you breathe out, relax...Ciampa whispers "this is MY moment" and then...It is a perfectly engineered bait-and-switch, and exactly as vicious as it needs to be. Pats on the back, all 'round. This moment alone makes this a worthwhile Takeover, but there's also a hell of an undercard. The women's triple-threat (Ruby Riott vs. Asuka vs. Nikki Cross) is stellar, Bobby Roode and Hideo Itami have their respective best Takeover matches ever, and then there was Tyler Bate vs. Pete Dunne. An absolute show-stealer of a match, a star-making performance for both men (especially Dunne), it cemented the career of several men, and was a fully-formed GREAT show, as opposed to a good show in service to a storyline.
5. Takeover: Brooklyn IV Gargano and Ciampa's battle of brotherhood, betrayal and brainwashing was supposed to blow off at Takeover: New York, but because God hates necks, Tomato Champion was out of action, making this the final singles encounter to date, until Tampa (again, IF it even happens). This is the weakest of their 3 excellent encounters (which still makes it better than any match over SummerSlam weekend), but it also features Johnny Stupid running into a speaker, because his dumb ass can't seem to quit Ciampa. It's one of the greatest long-form feuds for a reason, mirroring Bret and Owen from 1993 into 1994, with all the repeated imagery, the callbacks, the nuances, the psychological cruelty. The street fight at Chicago II is MAYBE better, but this undercard, for me, is a lot stronger. It featured the Undisputed Era vs. Moustache Mountain, aka the Brothers Shithead vs. the Proud Circus Bear and His Beautiful Son. Velveteen Dream vs. EC3 was the closest NXT got to WWE-style storytelling and was still brilliant (remember when EC3 wrestled?), and HEY, wouldn't you know it, Kairi Sane was once a character with dimensions, as evidenced by an amazing match with Shayna Bazsler. But what makes this undercard truly stellar is Adam Cole vs. Ricochet. It is so nice to see Ricochet used well, etc., but I will still never stop pissing myself at Cole nailing him square in the jaw with a superkick WHILE HE'S MID-MOONSAULT UPSIDE-DOWN SWEET JESUS. Sometimes...sometimes...things fall exactly into place.
4. Takeover: WarGames (2018) The WarGames Takeovers are just so silly. It's a silly shoebox, filled with huge, silly men who only barely know why they're killing each other. It's as close as we ever get to WWE's now-terminal problem of "set aside whatever feuds you have right now, because it's Stipulation Month!" (see: Hell In a Cell, most Money In the Bank shows, though Elimination Chamber largely sidesteps this). The other Shoebox Takeovers are really good, no doubt, but this one stands head-and-shoulders above the rest. But there is not a bad match on this card. Kassius Ohno rides Matt Riddle's knee all the way to heaven; NXT shows why 2-out-of-3-falls is fast becoming its signature stipulation with the excellent blowoff between Sane/Baszler; Sexy Mindgames Prince had a star-making match against Tommaso Ciampa, showing why he may be the best overall character in NXT right now, and sweet lord, Aleister Black vs. Johnny Wrestling. It somehow showed that Gargano was JUST AS, if NOT MORE engaging as a dirtbag than as a good guy. And those Black Masses are presents just for me, a guy who tends to like more community theater in his wrestling than flips ("I ABSOLVE YOU...OF ALL YOUR SINS!"). And then we get to the Shoebox, and gosh it's silly! The Viking Experience, Ricochet and Pete Dunne take on the Undisputed Era, and...its a fucking LOT. 45 minutes of spots and smashing, with just a sprinkling of story, with Fish locking Dunne in his cage so he can't participate in the match. Since this seems to be what this match is designed for...let's rattle off some spots! Ricochet, jumping from one ring to the other! That amazing face-off that recreates the Captain America: Civil War poster! Perhaps the beefiest Tower of Doom in all of wrestling! And then Ricochet proving just how amazing he is...with the double moonsault off the top of the cage. What a stupid thing to do in an amazing, amazing show.
3. Takeover: Dallas I get it; a lot of people might not rank this Takeover quite so high. But it might be my actual personal favorite...? Overall...? More than any other Takeover, this show feels the most like it's filled with living, breathing superheroes. Many NXT stars are seen as just indie guys whose only gimmick is "I'm a very good wrestler," making them almost anti-WWE at the core. But NXT doesn't get enough credit for being, at its core, the best aspects of WWE. The showmanship, the things that elevate mere wrestlers to things like monsters, gods, and demons. I will always like my NXT WWE-style: the best wrestling cut with the most theater, the most camp. And Dallas is that concept, writ large. Baron Corbin coming out with lil' skulls on his shoulders. American Alpha finally becoming Super Saiyan Nerds. Asuka killing our hero, because Bayley is a person, and Asuka is a goddess who can perform brain surgery with her feet. Finn Balor coming out and going actual Texas Chainsaw Massacre on Samoa Joe. It's excellent wrestling, near-mythic visuals...and then we get to Nakamura/Zayn. The most special moment of a very special night. It is, from nearly every perspective, perfect. The hype of the crowd, salivating with anticipation. That moment when Nakamura appears in silhouette, and that violin note slides like a knife across steel, to reveal the man who set New Japan aflame. Sami Zayn getting the best possible swan song in a promotion built almost entirely on HIS back. The end of his era. That bit where they just KEEP PUNCHING ONE ANOTHER. I know it's not a perfect show (Balor/Joe stops for 3 minutes to address a cut on Joe's forehead, stalling its momentum; that Corbin/Ares match isn't as good as it could be) but that all means nothing. It's a sentimental choice, and I'd make it #1 if I could.
2. Takeover: New Orleans I went around and around in my head, and this one and #1 kept jockeying for position in my brain. But these top two Takeovers are literally note-perfect, from ship to shore, soup to nuts, top to tails. So if this is YOUR favorite? (Honestly, maybe 1 person I know who loves wrestling as much as I do will even see this mess). I'm here for you, and I understand. But this show has TWO 5-star matches from the Wrestling Observer, and I don't ever agree with that. In this case, I agree with BOTH, in the North American Championship ladder match, and the first (and so far, BEST) match in the Gargano/Ciampa feud. Everything. Is. Amazing. Shayna Bazsler became Women's Champion after BEAST-MODING her SHOULDER back INTO IT'S SOCKET to show that, YES, she gets pro-wrestling. Roderick Strong shocked the world (and the System) by joining the Undisputed Era and becoming the final Chaos Emerald needed to make that stable Super Sonic. Aleister Black took the championship from Andrade "Cien" Almas and SMILED, I fucking SAW IT! And it all depends on what you want from your wrestling, but Gargs/Tamps might actually be the best main event in Takeover history, at least from a storytelling standpoint. The crutch, the neckbrace. Each man going back to their DIY roots (the tag team - they didn't build another ring when that one broke), and then sitting side-by-side, like they did at the Cruiserweight Classic. Brothers. Completely spent. Destroyed. No one but each other. And then Ciampa shits any chance at redemption up the goddamn wall, cementing his own destruction. Every. Bit. Counts.
and #1...
Takeover: New York For a whole bunch of other wrestling fans, this has the greatest main event in Takeover history. But first, let's take a minute to appreciate how lucky we are, or were, that NXT exists. It justfies the existence of WWE, artistically, almost by itself. If this one's only slightly worse than New Orleans, it is argued, it's that the North American title ladder match was TOO good, and hurt every other match on the card. It has been argued. Not by me, but this one is somehow the most perfectly paced, perfectly sized wrestling card, on its own, ever. Every match, through alchemy or magic, manages to enthrall the crowd equally, and completely. The Viking Raiders vs. Grumpy Smaller Undertaker and the Human Pinball was off the hook incredible, and that warm "thank you" feeling has translated, currently to a man trapped in a room and a man trapped in Vince McMahon's scorn for smaller wrestlers, respectively. Matt Riddle and Velveteen Dream put on an absolute fantasy match, pitting the best of MMA vs. the best of WWE-style theatricality, and adds to the complete, demented character-world of this brand, and the fact that Dream WINS against one of the hottest new prospects is so deserved, and shows that he can, and will, shine forever brighter. Then AAAAGH WALTER vs. Pete Dunne! WALTER LAYS into poor Dunne, his chops alone having you believe that after the match, he's going to run into the arena's parking lot to FIGHT THE CARS. Then Shirai vs. Baszler vs. Sane vs. Belair and goddammit how do I even expound on that without crashing thesarus.com? And then Johnny Gargano and Adam Cole wrestled for. 40. MINUTES. With Gargano as the defacto heel because it was allegedly Cole's time. And by the match's end, he had the crowd more behind him than maybe they ever had been before. Is it a bit much? Yes. Too many kickouts? Probably. But it stands as the apex of Johnny Wrestling's journey. After everything had been taken from him: DIY, his health, his sanity, even his chance at revenge...the only thing he has left is the NXT Championship. And in that moment, he is invincible, he is more than enough.
What a show. What a host of shows.
Thanks for reading, everyone.

The Kingdom of Love: 5th Sunday of Easter
The Easter Season is passing quickly. Already it is more than half over, as we progress toward the great Feasts of Ascension and Pentecost. We want the Season to slow down, so that we may savor the joy and consolation of these readings from Acts and John that dominate the Easter Cycle, but tempus fugit.
The Readings for this Fifth Sunday of Easter describe the growth of the Kingdom of God, which is manifested on earth as the Church. The first two readings and the psalm are tied together with Kingdom images, and the Gospel reminds us that this Kingdom is characterized by God’s love.
1. The First Reading is Acts 14:21-27:
After Paul and Barnabas had proclaimed the good news to that city and made a considerable number of disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch. They strengthened the spirits of the disciples and exhorted them to persevere in the faith, saying “It is necessary for us to undergo many hardships to enter the kingdom of God. They appointed elders for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, commended them to the Lord in whom they had put their faith. Then they traveled through Pisidia and reached Pamphylia. After proclaiming the word at Perga, they went down to Attalia. From there they sailed to Antioch, where they had been commended to the grace of God for the work they had now accomplished. And when they arrived, they called the church together and reported what God had done with them and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.
The key line from this reading of Acts is: “It is necessary for us to undergo many hardships to enter the Kingdom of God.”
If we had read through Acts continuously to this point, we would notice that the narrative has switched from following Peter (Acts 1-12) to following Paul (Acts 13-28) by this point in the story, and the theme of suffering to enter the Kingdom actually enters the Book of Acts at this point. The word for “suffering” here is the Greek thlipsis, often translated “tribulation” by the KJV-RSV tradition, and associated with the hardship preceding the final judgment in the Gospels and Revelation. It is also a favorite term of St. Paul throughout his Epistles.
It is not accidental that “tribulation” crops up in St. Paul’s preaching precisely at this point. In the verses immediately preceding today’s Reading (i.e. Acts. 14:19-20), Paul is stoned to death by a mob incited by some Jews, yet he more-or-less miraculously “rises from the dead,” returns to the city, and continues preaching in the region.
As Paul was preaching this message of “through many tribulations we must enter the Kingdom of God,” he was still visibly cut and bruised in a most awful way from his recent near-fatal (or truly fatal?) stoning. Standing mangled, bruised, bloody, and bandaged in front of the believers, his words must have had added power. Truly, he knew what tribulation was.
Empowered by the Spirit, the Apostles in Acts are growing in their understanding of the mystery of the Gospel. Though the element of suffering for the sake of the Good News had been present from the beginning of Jesus’ own preaching, Paul is realizing just how true this is. So many years before, Jesus Himself pronounced it on a mountaintop:
“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were before you.” (Matt 5:10-12)
So Paul’s preaching shows strong continuity with Jesus’. Through his preaching, the Kingdom continues to grow among the Gentiles. The ancient kingdom of David and Solomon included many Gentile nations within it, as vassal states in the empire (1 Kgs 4:21). Now the Kingdom of David, which is also the Kingdom of God, grows by the preaching about Jesus, Son of God and Son of David. And so it goes today: the preaching continues, conversions continue, and “tribulations” continue.
Pope Francis has spoken often of the modern world as an age of Christian martyrdom. Some years ago he said:
"There are bloody persecutions, like being torn to pieces by wild beasts to the delight of the audience in the stands or being blown up by a bomb at the end of Mass” and there are "velvet-gloved” persecutions that are "cloaked in politeness": the ones that marginalize you, take your job away if you fail to adapt to laws that "go against God the Creator. Persecution, I would say, is the daily bread of the Church. Today, on Easter Sunday, just three weeks ago… Those Christians who were celebrating Easter in Pakistan were martyred because they were celebrating the Risen Christ. Thus, the history of the Church goes ahead with its martyrs."
Though he spoke those words some years ago, they continue to ring true as the massacre of Christians at Easter in Sri Lanka this past year reminds us.
The Pope pointed out that in addition to bloody persecutions, there is a subtle form of persecution consisting of a refusal to allow conscientious objection to the pro-death laws of Western societies:
"But there is another persecution which is not much spoken about," a persecution "camouflaged by culture, by modernity, by progress in disguise: It is a persecution I would 'ironically' describe as polite. It’s when someone is persecuted for wanting to manifest the values of the Gospel: "It’s persecution against God the Creator in the person of his children!”
"It’s the kind of the persecution that deprives one of freedom, and of the possibility of conscientious objection. This is the persecution of the world."
Before we leave the First Reading, we should note a small but important feature of the Apostles’ ministry: “they appointed elders (presbuteroi) for them in each church.”
The leadership of the Church needs to be appointed, not elected, because the authority comes from Christ through his representatives, not from the people, as if the Church were a democracy.
These elders appointed by the Apostles were the first bishops (episkopoi) and priests (presbuteroi). In the very early Church, the terminology for the roles that we now distinguish as “bishops” and “priests” was not yet regularized. In certain NT passages, episkopos and presbuteros were used roughly synonymously. Later, the Church became more conscientious about reserving the title episkopos (bishop) for the presbuteros (priest) who was in charge of the whole local church. Keeping that in mind, we see here in Acts 14 how the Apostles, while they were alive, were conscious of the need to appoint leaders to continue their ministry and exercize their authority in their absence. These episkopoi and presbuteroi in turn appointed replacements for themselves, down to the present day, with Pope Francis and our local bishops and priests. So we are still “living in Acts.” The Church we see forming in this holy book is the one we still inhabit. The successors of St. Paul continue their ministry among us!
2. The Responsorial Psalm is Ps 145:8-9, 10-11, 12-13
R. (cf. 1) I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God.
The LORD is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness. The LORD is good to all and compassionate toward all his works. R. I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God.
Let all your works give you thanks, O LORD,and let your faithful ones bless you. Let them discourse of the glory of your kingdomand speak of your might. R. I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God.
Let them make known your might to the children of Adam, and the glorious splendor of your kingdom. Your kingdom is a kingdom for all ages, and your dominion endures through all generations. R. I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God.
This Psalm is unique in that it mentions the kingdom (Heb. malkuth) of God four times. Only one or two other Psalms even mention God’s kingdom (103:19, possibly 45:6), and then only once each. So Psalm 145 is the “Psalm of the Kingdom of God.” This Kingdom is to be proclaimed to “the children of Adam,” that is, to all people, to all nations. That is precisely what Paul and Barnabas were doing in the First Reading. This kingdom is characterized by God’s grace, mercy, kindness (hesed), goodness, and compassion. This reminds us of the Gospel Reading, where Jesus gives the “new commandment” of love, which will characterize the new community he has established.
3. The Second Reading is Rev 21:1-5a:
Then I, John, saw a new heaven and a new earth. The former heaven and the former earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. I also saw the holy city, a new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, God’s dwelling is with the human race. He will dwell with them and they will be his people and God himself will always be with them as their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there shall be no more death or mourning, wailing or pain, for the old order has passed away.” The One who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.”
Jerusalem was the capital city of the Davidic Kingdom, and several times in the nation’s history, the extent of the kingdom was reduced by invasion to the capital city alone (Isa 1:8; 36:1-2). Jerusalem is the mystical center of the Kingdom. This New Jerusalem is often identified as an image of heaven, but it is more accurate to see it as a vision of the Church. The “Church Triumphant” and “Heaven” are virtually coextensive concepts, so there is a great deal of overlap. Nonetheless, the identification with the Church can be made with the help of St. Paul, who calls the Church both the Bride of Christ (Eph. 5) and also the Temple of God, built on the foundation of the Apostles (Eph. 2). Likewise, this New Jerusalem of Revelation is Bride of Christ (Rev 21:9), a giant Holy of Holies (21:16), built on the foundation of the Apostles (21:14).
In the Church Triumphant, truly all tears, death, mourning, wailing, and pain will be removed. We may rest assured that there will be an ultimate end to the “tribulations” we suffer for the sake of the Kingdom. Nonetheless, even now, through the ministry of the Church and the Sacraments, we receive a great deal of comfort and consolation as we “strive to enter the Kingdom.”
Covenant concepts are implicit in this reading. The city is a “bride,” married to the Lamb, and marriage is one of the primary forms of covenant. Furthermore, this phrase, “they will be his people and he will be their God,” is often called by scholars the “covenant formula” or “covenant formulary,” because it is the most succinct Old Testament expression of the essential covenant relationship between God and Israel.
A covenant is the extension of family ties by an oath. Families are bound by love. This Second Reading uses an image of very tender love: “He will wipe every tear from their eyes.” This is a very intimate gesture. It is human nature to resist another person touching one’s face, especially around one’s eyes. If a stranger approached us and reached for our eyes, we would react violently and defensively. This is only something we would accept from a father, a mother, a spouse. God promises us this level of intimacy forever in the Church Triumphant, the life to come.
4. The Gospel is Jn 13:31-33a, 34-35:
When Judas had left them, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and God will glorify him at once. My children, I will be with you only a little while longer. I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
The Gospel of John is full of paradox, almost from the beginning of the Gospel, where we read:
He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world knew him not.
He came to his own, and his own received him not.
We would expect, of course, that when the maker comes to what he has made, he would be received with joy — but paradoxically, such is not the case.
There is paradox in today’s periscope as well. We have reached one of the darkest hours in Jesus’ ministry: Judas has just left the upper room to carry out his mission of betrayal. Judas, one of the most capable and trustworthy of the disciples, the one entrusted with the common purse, is intent on selling Jesus to those who want him dead.
So is Jesus morose at this moment? Far from it! Instead he says:
Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him …
Why is this moment considered the “glory” of the Son of Man? We may offer many different perspectives on that question, but perhaps it is because Jesus has just consented to the will of the Father, consented to the total act of self-gift that will lead to the cross. This is the true glory of God: not simply that he is the all-powerful creator, but that his love extends to the point of giving up his divine prerogatives and giving himself into the hands of his creatures, to make them his sons and daughters (Phil. 2:5-11).
So the “glory” of the Son of Man is the glory of the total self-gift of love.
At this point, we see the logic of Jesus’ discourse, and why he moves from speaking of his glorification to the command of love:
I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.
As many commentators have pointed out, the command of love by itself is not new. The Old Testament already commanded one to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Lev 19:18). What is new here is to love as Jesus has loved, which is to love more than self.
The community of disciples that Jesus has formed and is forming, which can also be called “the Church” and “the Kingdom,” should be marked by this love:
This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.
We see here how love is tied to evangelism: “This how all will know … if you have love.” This is a truth we tend to forget. When we take up efforts for evangelization, we tend to think of strategies for outreach, of door-to-door canvassing, rallies, crusades, passing out brochures, parish missions, etc. All of things are fine, but more fundamental is whether the local Christian community actually demonstrates love for each other.
Is our local parish a community of love, or a religious center where people greet each other in passing while heading in or out of worship? Is it any wonder, then, that the world doesn’t recognize us as the disciples of Jesus?
It is a hard saying. We have a great deal to do in order to implement our Lord’s command this day.

Wiz Khalifa Names The Two Weakest Hip-Hop Smokers
Though many rappers have developed a reputation for having iron-lungs, Wiz Khalifa has set himself apart as a truly prodigious weed smoker. As such, his entire brand has become synonymous with bud, to the point where many of his hip-hop friends have grown wary of engaging in smoke-sessions with the Kush & OJ rapper. Even those who can generally hold their own have found themselves deeply outclassed, as Wiz himself revealed during a candid talk with Big Boy TV.
Andreas Rentz/Getty Images
When asked to point out rappers who simply can’t hang in the bud smoking department, Wiz wastes little time in calling out names. “Big Sean,” he says, before taking a moment to ponder further. “French Montana. I’m stoned so I can’t think of anyone.” Big Boy also asks who wouldn’t get the passed the blunt during the pandemic, to which Wiz replies “anybody who wasn’t in the house for at least an entire month. If you haven’t been quarantining for a month, you ain’t getting no weed. Matter of fact, nobody actually.”
Big Boy also asks Wiz if he would take coronavirus immunity in exchange for six-months without weed — for him, it’s the easier answer so far. “I’m already pretty confident in my chances,” says Wiz. “So nah, I ain’t giving away my pot for that.” Last but not least, Wiz ranks B-Real as the gold-tier weed-smoker, Snoop Dogg as the silver-tier, and himself as the bronze-tier. Be sure to check out Wiz’s speed-round of marijuana-related answers at approximately sixteen-minutes into the video.

He recognizes a plain comparison amongst words like a relatively modern ethnical advent as well as the subconscious as a possible ancient scientific process; the two are constructed from solely different textile, which is the reason, as outlined by McCarthy, the particular other than conscious is definitely “loathe to go to you.” It is “just a novice to supplying mental recommendations and is not content the process,” preferring to talk with your consciousness inside images as well as metaphors.

As the daddy talks about: “Okay implies acceptable. The big apple: Macmillan, 1907. In truth, in every involving his / her twenty novels McCarthy offers confirmed a strong being addicted the exceptional, critical occasions when individuals have the choices that may specify their particular everyday life always. With this fixation about the previous, The Road appears to display Franco “Bifo” Berardi’s prospect of “the finish of the future.” As Berardi clarifies, while using the start of this neoliberal era, this future-orientation of gradual modernity has started to be replaced by what exactly he terms and conditions a new “dystopian imagination” (18), upset just because of the unexplained utopianism with cyberculture, which usually nowadays, on the other hand, features dropped most of it has the future-optimism in addition to destination also.15 Within The Road, it’s possible to remember that period will most certainly not halt, but that the thought of the longer term have just about wholly disappeared. The Summa Theologica with St . Sheehan claims that “although there is a surfeit of non secular allusions submitting a interstices in the book, your problems they boost about religion along with notion acquire a a lot more critically aimed political alignment because the account shows up.” Sheehan takes The Road regarding “Western worries of violence plus fanaticism,” together with latest ideas regarding refugees and out of place people, finding out McCarthy’s dude and youngster to get “refugees, seeking asylum with the soil alone, vainly unsightly pitting by themselves contrary to the deceased seed covering be the depleted biosphere.” James, P.Deb.

Her Latest Flame Chapter 21: All Aboard
Previous Chapters
Sophie sees it coming. Right from the moment she sees Reagan’s number on her phone, to the minute she calls her back, eight hours later. Eight hours and thirteen minutes and twenty-seven seconds and yes, she counted them all and no, that doesn't make her weird and if you think that it does, she’s got two fucking words for you.
You’re probably right.
Alright… so three words. She never claimed to be good at math so just go ahead and fuck right off, OK, cause the math? So not the point.
The point is that she sees it coming like a mile away, like she’s staring it down even as she finds herself tied to the tracks, and that train is barreling on, coming closer and closer and no matter how much she struggles, no matter how hard she fights, those knots in the ropes are just too fucking tight.
Yeah, she knows it’s an odd metaphor, she gets that. But come on, maybe we ought to cut the girl a bit of slack. Just a few days ago she thought - so so so fucking wrongly - that she’d found someone she could love (OK, that part might have been right) and someone who could, maybe, love her back, if she just gave her enough time and enough… incentive.
Except now she knows that part was never going to be right cause there’s not enough time in all of eternity and as much incentive as she can give - and it's a lot - it’s never going to measure up to what she’d like to call the ‘memory’ or, really, the 'memories’, cause she’s absolutely sure that there’s a lot of them, but the problem with either of those is they’re both past tense and if there’s anything Sophie’s sure of now, it’s that that train that’s about to grind her up beneath its wheels?
Yeah, it’s anything but past.
Anything but past or over or done or… just pick your fucking term cause Sophie’s fresh out of vocabulary words for the day and if it weren’t for the Redbull portion of those five Redbulls and vodkas she put away last night, she’d be pretty much fresh out of damn near everything at this point, because, it should be noted, the whole 'thought I’d found the one' ridiculousness isn't all she’s had to deal with.
What else, you ask? Oh, you need a refresher?
Well, there was also the whole discovering her 'maybe’ one was Amy’s ’always’ one and then there was the whole having to confront her friend - best friend and, unless you count Lauren (and you really can’t because she's definitely Amy’s) or Reagan (do we need to spell that one out?) then best might also be synonymous with only and that’s a whole other heartbreak in and of itself - and, of course, there’s the whole punching said best (only) friend bit and then there’s the drunken night with Reagan that didn’t go the way Sophie’d imagined a drunken night with Reagan would go, like at all.
And that was before the talk with Farrah and the phone call with Reagan that took eight hours to get to but lasted less than eight minutes - cause, really, how long does it take to say 'we should talk’ and 'can you meet me’ and not say 'it’s you, it's always been you’ - and, truthfully, Sophie ought to be fucking commended for it being only five R+V’s.
So, yeah, she can be forgiven a mixed metaphor or two, but no matter how she phrases it, the point is always the same. That train’s coming and it’s coming for her (something Reagan never did and no, she’s not thinking about that right now, but it might have crossed her mind a time or two in between R+V #’s 1 and 5) and, if she’s being honest, the thing that really, truly, absolutely pisses her right the fuck off?
(Besides all of it)
It’s that, no matter how hard she tries - and she’s fucking tried - she can’t manage to see either Reagan or Amy as the evil mustache twirling villain what tied her to those tracks. Oh, make no mistake about it, she is the one on the tracks and they are safe on the train (maybe in different cars, at the moment, but come on, we all know that won't last) but Sophie can’t quite see them as wrong. Not for what they feel, at least.
What they did… well… it’s gonna take a few more R+V’s - like all the Redbull and most of the vodka in the fucking world - for her to not see that as wrong.
(And no, she’s not thinking about how right some parts of her - some stupidly thruple leaning parts - might see what they did.) (She hasn’t thought about that since R+V #3.)
(Not much, anyway.)
But Sophie can’t hate them for how they feel or for never getting over each other, and she can’t even hate them (much) for chugga chugga chugging their powerful locomotive of inevitable love right over her. When you find that, when you stumble your way into discovering the person that you can’t ever let go of - even when you’re holding on to someone else - that's exactly the kind of thing that you should fight for and you should refuse to let go and you shouldn't give even two tiny damns about anyone who gets between you and it.
Even when that 'anyone’ between you and it is your best (but not only cause Lauren and maybe not even best cause Karma, sort of, kinda, maybe) friend and roommate and you won’t be quite the same without her.
Sophie’s spent a lot of time lately - mostly sober time, but quite a bit of drunk too - wondering if she would have done something different in Amy’s place.
The fact that she’s never come up with an answer one way or the other just pisses her off more but it does explain why, really, all she can do is watch that train come (shut up) and hope that when it gets there, when the blow finally comes?
It comes quick.
(Oh, for fuck’s sake…)
And that and that other stupid fucking hope, that unspoken but not un-thought desperate prayer that maybe - just maybe - there will be something salvageable out of all this when it’s done - and 'it’s' totally means the breaking of the kinda already broken bits of her heart - is the only feasible explanation anyone would need for why she’s here, sitting in a diner, watching as Reagan slides down into the chair across from her and, more importantly, why she’s not angrily tossing a glass of water in her face and storming out the door in a huff.
Well… that last part might have something to do with R+V #1 and #2 and, yeah, #3 through #5 cause, really, Sophie doesn’t think she’s got a single 'huff’ in her.
The vodka is taking up all the room.
Still - and maybe it’s the Redbull - Sophie can’t quite bring herself to focus, to really listen, and so, when Reagan starts with 'Thanks for coming, I wasn’t sure you would’ she just wonders, for a second, just how many times she’s said that recently. There was a mention, in those less than eight minutes, of talking to Heather, so there’s one, for sure. And now there’s her, which makes two. And, yes, Sophie totally knows she shouldn’t, but she can’t help her wandering mind, and it can’t stop wondering if Reagan said those same words to Amy.
Which, you know, totally defeats her whole 'not gonna think about them together’ plan - did she forget to mention that? - but, honestly, that was shot long ago, cause she’s been thinking pretty much of nothing but for damn near all of the last twenty-four hours, to the point of being sick of hearing herself, sick of thinking about it, of thinking about what Farrah said about it and, most of all, sick of trying (and failing) to consider all of the options she’s got about what to do about it.
And when she says 'all’ of the options she really means the few cause, let’s face it, there’s not that many choices for her here and none of them (not a single fucking one) are good and all of them (every single fucking one) involve someone getting hurt and yes, that someone is almost always her and yes, that is why none of them are good and why none of this is even kinda fair and yes, she ought to be paying attention to what Reagan’s saying to her but, truthfully?
Sophie’s just about used up her 'yes, I’m listening’ fucks and her 'I know you’re sorry’ fucks and her 'it’s OK, I get that you didn’t mean to hurt me’ (that came right after “I wasn’t sure you would” and just before "I’m sorry" and she’s not entirely sure that’s the order that they should have been in) and her 'of course I understand how it could just… happen’ (and parts of her really do, all the decidedly non heart parts) and her 'no, I don’t mean one single fucking word of what I’m saying and you can’t seriously think that I do’ fucks.
So, you know, basically all the fucks. Sophie’s just fresh out of fucks to give and fucks to feel and fucks to care. She’s utterly absolutely completely fuckless.
And yet…
Here she is.
She came when Reagan called and - Reagan’s 'not sure you would’ notwithstanding - there was never any doubt, and Sophie knew that, which is maybe why she held out for eight hours, trying to save what little dignity she had left. Like that ship hadn’t sailed long ago and yes, she knows it was a train before and now there’s a ship and she’s pretty sure, eventually, there’s gonna be a car too - cause, it’s planes, trains, and automobiles, motherfucker - but the transportation of her metaphors is, again, so not the point.
Though, at this point, Sophie’s not even sure what the point is other than wishing Reagan would hurry the fuck up and get to it and put her out of her Old fucking Yeller misery.
“I’ve been thinking a lot about this,” Reagan says, right on time for Sophie to tune back out of her own head and into the conversation - one sided as it may be - and it's perfect timing cause that might be the first thing that Reagan’s said that she actually agrees with, seeing as how she knows all too well what that’s like.
Sophie’s been thinking about it a lot too. And by 'a lot’ she means pretty much all the thoughts all the time. Most of those thoughts, even the ones before the Redbull and the vodka, were of that one moment, of Reagan in the doorway with the phone clutched in her hand, and how it all suddenly made sense. Sophie keeps replaying that slow realization that washed over her, the dawning idea that of just who belonged to who.
Reagan was Amy's her - the nameless ex (and oh, who’s regretting Rule #6 now?) that she’s never quite put behind her (and oh, there’s an image) - and Amy was Reagan’s her, the one she said she was ready to forget though, in her defense, that’s easier to do when said 'her’ isn’t standing right in front of you.
Or, you know, laying next to you. Or on top of you. Or between your legs staring up at you as she slowly…
Fuck.
This is why she had that plan, that not think of them together plan and, honestly, this is why that plan never stood a snowball in Liam Booker’s Thunder Box’s chance of succeeding.
But, again, not the point.
This point Sophie does know though, cause it’s so fucking obvious. That realization, that slow and stumbling trip to Amy and Reagan and true love… it hurt. It hurt like hell, it hurt even more than that other, considerably faster realization, the dawning - sprinting - idea that they…
They… well… yeah. They… you know.
That one hit her like a fucking Mack truck (sort of a car, right?), crushing her on the spot. But it’s funny to her - like the way a shiv in your kidney or a bullet to the spleen or stepping on a Lego in the middle of the night is funny - that the 'you know’ wasn’t really the problem, that it wasn’t the pain.
Sophie knew she could compete with sex, even great sex and yes, she’s sure that any Reamy sex, even if it was just a hook up (and it so wasn’t), even if was just 'the feels’ without the feels would be great… no… AWESOME sex (and yes, all those caps are absolutely necessary) and maybe some of those thoughts about Reagan in the door and the phone and all the realizations might have drifted a bit sometimes (to Reagan and Amy, like that) or maybe just a bit more than a bit (thruple) (thruple that begins with her just watching cause… well, that’s just polite but then Amy - and it’s Amy every time - reaches out for her and then, well, it's game fucking on) but, eventually, all those thoughts come back to one simple equation that even her math challenged brain can compute.
It’s Amy for Reagan and Reagan for Amy and that 1+1 doesn’t = thruple. Not where it counts.
Maybe it would count in their bed, but not in their hearts and yup, there it is, there’s that shiv and that bullet and that fucking lego in the night (one of the big bricks, none of that tiny little two-hole shit) and so, yeah, she’s been thinking about it and yes, that’s yet another reason she shouldn’t be here, not that she really need any more of those.
That moment in the door was really the only one she’d ever need.
Or… you know… not. Cause here she fucking is and oh, wait… Reagan's still talking?
“It’s been about the only thing I’ve thought of,” Reagan says, and, what do you know, that gives them two whole things in common, and that’s two more than Sophie expected. “I’ve come at it from every angle,” Reagan says, “but I just can’t figure it, you know?”
Yeah. Sophie knows.
“It’s been keeping me up at night,” Reagan says and what was that Sophie thought about all her fucks to give? “I toss and turn,” she says, shaking her head, fingers drumming a steady beat on the tabletop. She’s nervous and she’s beating around the bush and she’s doing everything she can to do anything but get to the fucking point. “And I just end up laying there, staring up at the ceiling in the dark. I don’t know what to do or how I… did what I did.” Reagan stares down at her drumming fingers, and Sophie’s sure that’s mostly because that means no eye contact, as that’s apparently the one thing she can’t do. “Last night I was so mad and so… wrecked… so lost that I… cracked. I spent like hour just screaming and pounding my fists into the mattress.”
Sophie takes a sip of her water and wonders, briefly, if Reagan even realizes how close those descriptions of her torment come to matching Sophie’s imaginings of them together, what with the screaming and the fists and the mattress and all.
Though, in fairness, Sophie usually pictures Amy doing most of the screaming which is probably only because she’s, you know, actually heard that.
(Elsie)
(Rule 21: If it happens again, Amy will buy Sophie a pair of Beats headphones and don’t even play like you don’t know what 'it’ is, Raudenfeld.)
(They’re purple. Sophie’s Beats. Ironic, no?)
Sophie takes another sip of her water - drinks: the socially awkward’s perfect shield - trying to remember her plan. She’s not here to think about Amy and Reagan together or any ridiculous thrupleized version of Amy and Reagan and her. She’s here, she reminds herself, cause she’s hurt and mad and hurt and wronged and hurt and betrayed and did she mention hurt?
It bears fucking repeating.
And she’s here because she sees it coming - that damn train - and the quicker it gets here, the quicker it’s done and that’s one step closer to her figuring out just how much she’s really lost.
She’s afraid it’s going to be everything.
She's more afraid that it won’t be.
Sophie tries - stick to the fucking plan - but, in the end, she forgets that Reagan doesn’t know the plan and she’s sure as hell not sticking to it, not when she quits drumming, reaching across the table instead, one hand finding Sophie’s. And oh, will you look at that? Now she make eye contact, now she suddenly can’t look away, even if Sophie tries - and fails fucking miserably and what a shock that is, right? - to look at the table or the floor or the waitress with the really not all that great ass or, you know, anywhere that isn’t Reagan.
“Sophie? Look at me?”
She'd love to cause, well, Reagan. But when she looks at her, she sees them and she doesn’t feel like crying just yet.
Yet being the key word, she’s sure.
“Sophie, please.”
And oh, how this isn’t the context she imagined hearing that in.
“I know you don’t owe me a fucking thing,” Reagan says - and there’s thing number three they agree on - as she gently squeezes Sophie’s hand in hers. “But, please, just look at me?”
If there was ever any way she could have resisted (spoiler: there wasn’t), Sophie knows it flies right out the nearest window when she hears the pain and the pleading and the fucking anguish in Reagan’s voice. She may not have any fucks to give, but she’s still got a heart.
Battered as it is.
Sophie looks over at Reagan and she feels it. Everywhere. In her hand, still clutched atop the table. In her chest, as her heart thuds against her insides, feeling so much less broken which, really, only serves to break it more. And there, right fucking there, in those eyes, the ones that can’t and won’t look away, staring so deeply into her own.
Like they did that night.
I’m ready to forget.
And yeah, that’s a notion Sophie can fucking get behind.
But there’s no time for that cause Reagan… she’s already rolling again, and talking faster than Sophie has ever heard her, like she needs to get it out, like even though she's on the train, she can still see it coming too, and her knots…
They’re digging into her flesh and, if the tears suddenly welling in her eyes are any indication, they may well be drawing blood.
“There’s just no good way out,” Reagan says, and before Sophie can even process that, she’s already moving again, headed right into 'it’s a mess’ and 'it’s just so fucked up’ and, finally, into 'no matter what, someone’s going to get hurt’ and at that, Sophie finally does the smart and right thing and pulls back, retreating as best she can, pulling her hand free and dropping it down into her lap and looking away cause, well…
Duh.
She doesn’t say that, doesn’t even say that, you know, maybe there was a way around that, all the way back before Reagan’s thighs found their way around Amy’s head, again. And this time, thinking of that is only a pain in her heart and not a… feeling… down between her legs, and yes, Sophie realizes that’s probably a good sign.
Probably. Maybe. Most likely.
Of course it is. It’s a good sign, like a good indication that - fuck her dignity - she’s gonna crack and she’s gonna cry and soon she’s gonna run right out of the damn door, tears streaming down her face and then she’ll hit the wall, the cold and hard and wrecking realization that she’s got no one and nowhere to run to, even though she totally should.
Rule #27: When in doubt or need or pain, we go to each other. Always.
Fucking rules.
“Someone said something to me recently,” Reagan says, her hand still just sitting there, limp on the table and she says it like there’s a world in which Sophie can’t figure out that her 'someone’ is obviously Heather, but the bigger thing is: oh my God, she's still talking.
Sophie wants nothing more - has wanted nothing more for the entire fucking conversation - than for Reagan to get to the fucking point, to drop the damn hammer, to hit her with the 'I need Amy and I love Amy and I’m so sorry that it had to be you that paid for our perfect love cause it totally should have been Karma’ and be done with it. But, Reagan seems intent on dragging this shit out like a Walking Dead cliffhanger and Sophie can barely hold back a screaming 'just fucking say it already’.
“Amy runs, Reagan says - and again, duh - “and that’s on her, but…” She finally pulls her hand back, folding them together in her lap. “All I’ve ever done is give her reasons to. Over and over, I’ve given her nothing but things to run from and that someone… Heather said that maybe it was time I gave her something to run to.”
As much as she feels that shiv twisting and that bullet breaking her skin and that fucking Lego shooting pain up her leg, Sophie feels something else even more.
Relief.
Finally, she thinks. It’s about time, she says to herself. Now she can get on with it, now she can deal with this new reality of Reagan and Amy and how she might fit into that, if she even does or even wants to.
The train’s finally come.
“And so that’s what I’m going to do,” Reagan says. “I"m going to give Amy something to run to.”
It’s the oddest thing, the way part of Sophie wants to just curl up and disappear at the very thought and part of her - a surprisingly big part - can only think that it’s about damn time.
And then Reagan is suddenly standing and it's her cheeks stained with tears and her hands trembling at her sides and it's her saying “I’m bowing out.”
Wait. What?
“I love her and I always will and I don’t know how to fucking stop but I know…” Reagan shakes her head - vehemently - as Sophie starts to rise and that freezes her in place, halfway between a stand and a sit. “But I know this is right. I’m gonna give her something to run to, the one thing I know she won’t run from.”
Oh. Oh no. Oh no.
“I’m giving her you.”
And then she’s gone - exit stage fucking what - and so, yeah, it does end with someone in tears and running and with no one and nowhere to go to except that it’s not the right someone, not the right someone at all. And Sophie’s left there and all she can think?
She so didn’t see that coming.

S. I. Strong, Alternative Facts and the Post-Truth Society: Meeting the Challenge, 165 U. Pa. L. Rev. Online 137 (2017)
Abstract
In the hours following the 2017 U.S. presidential inauguration, the world was introduced to the concept of "alternative facts," a term that quickly became synonymous with a willingness to persevere with a particular belief either in complete ignorance of, or with a total disregard for, reality.' The increasing incidence of alternative facts in the popular and political arena creates a critical conundrum for lawyers, judges, legislators, and anyone interested in deliberative democracy, since it is unclear how rational debate can proceed if empirical evidence holds no persuasive value.
This Essay seeks to use empirical research to demonstrate that conventional means of responding to legal and political misconceptions (i.e., content-oriented speech aimed at those who are believed to have simply failed to hear the relevant information) are no longer capable of fostering and promoting rational discourse. While some of the current difficulties arise as a result of unconscious bias, those types of cognitive distortions are difficult to address directly, and the better option may be to approach the issue from a communication perspective-that is, by focusing on how information is delivered. Not only is that type of response supported by empirical research, it also has the benefit of placing the power of change in the hands of those who most desire it.
During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act. – George Orwell, 1984
In the hours following the 2017 U.S. presidential inauguration, the world was introduced to the concept of “alternative facts” (alt-facts), a term that quickly became synonymous with a willingness to persevere with a particular belief either in complete ignorance of or with a total disregard for reality.1 The increasing incidence of alt-facts in the popular and political arena creates a critical conundrum for lawyers, judges, legislators and anyone interested in deliberative democracy, since it is unclear how rational debate can proceed if empirical evidence holds no persuasive value.
Although the concept of a “post-truth society” only truly entered the cultural consciousness within the last year,2 social scientists from a variety of fields, most notably political science and psychology, have long been interested in how and why individuals and institutions adopt behaviors or beliefs that are patently at odds with observable reality. These scholars’ often startling conclusions provide important insights for lawyers and policymakers struggling to adapt to unprecedented legal and political challenges.
Traditionally, political misperceptions have been characterized as “information deficits” arising out of individuals’ “lack of interest in or knowledge of politics.”3 Under this view, the best response, according to no less eminent an authority than Justice Brandeis, “is more speech.”4
Lawyers tend to find this approach extremely attractive, given their belief, honed through years of training, that the best form of persuasion is through content-based arguments (so-called “hard evidence”).5 Unfortunately, two political scientists, Brendan Nyhan and Jason Reifler, have empirically demonstrated that “more speech” does not cure certain types of political misperceptions and may in some cases be counterproductive.6 Their research shows that “misperceptions are not just an information problem,” which means that “[e]xposure to accurate information may not be enough” to counteract individual or institutional adherence to alt-facts.7
If those findings were not sufficiently sobering, Nyhan and Reifler also discovered that attempts to correct misinformation can actually strengthen political misperceptions among those who are most strongly committed to their initial position.8 This phenomenon is of course extremely problematic given the increasingly polarized nature of U.S. society and explains why various attempts to correct the factual record during the 2016 presidential campaign and the early days of the current administration have been less successful than one might expect. Nyhan and Reifler’s data has subsequently been used as the basis of a metric developed by Edward Glaeser and Cass Sunstein to evaluate when attempts to correct political misperceptions do more harm than good.9
Nyhan and Reifler’s work provides other critical lessons for the legal community. For example, Nyan and Reifler found that people are more likely to maintain factually inaccurate beliefs if the information is offered in a manner that facilitates counter-argument.10 Resistance to change is particularly pronounced when people are presented with both sides of a particular controversy, as is routinely the case in legal and political debates.11 The point-counterpoint approach is also used by journalists, which again helps to explain why media reports about factual inaccuracies during the recent presidential campaign had very little effect on voter perceptions and practices.12
Nyhan and Reifler also empirically confirmed several propositions derived from the field of psychology. For example, their research demonstrated not only that “the threatening nature of certain facts appear[ed] to inhibit people from acknowledging the true state of the evidence on controversial issues” but also that people’s preexisting views were “likely to contribute to misperceptions about controversial issues.”13 In particular, Nyhan and Reifler proved that “[d]irectionally motivated reasoning,” meaning “biases in information processing that occur when one wants to reach a specific conclusion,” plays a significant role in how people interpret information involving political issues.14 Indeed, “[m]isperceptions often fit comfortably in people’s worldviews . . . by seeming to confirm people’s prior beliefs.”15
This latter statement refers to a concept known as “confirmation bias,” which is one of many types of cognitive distortions studied by psychologists.16 Confirmation bias is defined as the unconscious but pervasive human propensity to filter out information that contradicts an existing belief and only retain information that confirms that belief.17 Other types of cognitive distortions that have been shown to affect legal and political decision-making include positive illusions, hindsight bias, contrast bias, procrastination bias, omission bias, normality bias and the status quo bias.18
Because these phenomena operate on an unconscious level, they are particularly difficult to identify and challenge.19 The situation is further exacerbated by virtue of the “bias blind spot,” which is reflected in the fact that research subjects “were readily persuaded of the aggregate pattern of behavior (and the reasons for it), but seemed unaware (and slightly skeptical) that they personally would fall prey” to any particular bias.20
Unconscious bias (sometimes referred to as implicit bias or hidden bias) exists in all areas of life, including both the personal and the political.21 Some scholars, including Debra Lyn Bassett and Elayne Greenberg, suggest that the best way to minimize unconscious bias is by attacking the issue head-on through education and related consciousness-raising techniques.22 Other experts, most notably Ralph Richard Banks and Richard Thompson Ford, believe that focusing on unconscious bias can misdescribe the relevant issues and avoid more important substantive concerns.23 Banks and Ford’s analysis appears particularly persuasive in the current context, since it is unlikely that telling purveyors of alternative facts that they are operating under the influence of various unconscious biases will increase the quality of deliberative debate, particularly given the volatility of the contemporary political environment and the low regard that supporters of alt-facts appear to have for scientific research and scholarly endeavor.24 As a result, the better course of action may be to focus on the method of communication, consistent with Nyhan and Reifler’s observation that “the way in which information is delivered could substantially reduce misperceptions” about a particular political practice or event.25
Although Nyhan and Reifler do not themselves provide any recommendations on how to proceed, Glaeser and Sunstein, building directly on Nyhan and Reifler’s work, suggest that the best way to combat political misperceptions is through the use of “surprising validators,” meaning individuals and institutions that are credible to persons operating under the misperception(s) in question.26 According to Glaeser and Sunstein, the inherent authority of the sources counterbalances the negative perception of the content of the message, thereby allowing the error to be corrected.27 Bassett similarly suggests “exposure to actual admired exemplars who are counter-stereotypical” as a means of combatting misperceptions arising out of unconscious bias.28
While this solution may succeed in some circumstances and is indeed consistent with classical rhetorical principles regarding the importance of ethos in legal and political argument,29 it does not contemplate the possibility that some individuals or institutions may be incapable of absorbing information contrary to their own beliefs, even in situations where the authority of the speaker is beyond cavil.30 Sunstein has suggested in other writings that certain types of political misperceptions and unconscious biases might be resolved through the assistance of a strong executive branch.31 However, he limited that proposal to situations where “officials within that branch can be trusted to make decisions with careful reference to the facts” (emphasis his),32 which is not currently the case.
Misperceptions arising out of inter-group conflict, including what Sunstein has called political “partyism,”33 could be addressed by focusing on what social psychologists Carolyn and Muzafer Sherif refer to as “superordinate goals,” meaning “goals which are compelling and highly appealing to members of two or more groups in conflict but which cannot be attained by the resources and energies of the groups separately. In effect, they are goals attained only when groups pull together.”34 Finding common ground and common goals is a standard technique used by those engaged in integrative negotiation,35 and numerous academics, including Carrie Menkel-Meadows and Lawrence Susskind, have suggested that these types of communicative techniques, originally developed in the conflict resolution field, can offer useful models for democratic deliberation, particularly to the extent those mechanisms counteract standard adversarial (distributive) paradigms, where one party’s gain is another party’s loss.36 Although this strand of research does not necessarily address core concerns about pervasive misconceptions, it discusses how trust might be built between different constituencies so as to trigger application of Glaeser and Sunstein’s theory of surprising validators.37
The preceding discussion provides a brief glimpse into how the legal community might rely on empirical research to determine how best to address problems created by the proliferation of alt-facts. The enunciated examples focus on general issues relating to the alt-fact phenomenon, but similar types of interdisciplinary analyses can also be used to address specific problems. For example, psychology has been used to consider how personal and political misperceptions and misstatements affect the use of war powers, which is an issue that could become important in the coming months and years.38
Those seeking to understand and respond to the increasing use of alternative facts need not limit themselves to the social sciences. Empirical research from the hard sciences can also be brought to bear on the contemporary concerns. For example, neuroscience can be used to explain certain aspects of the prevailing political climate through reference to a phenomenon known as “the winner effect.”39 For example, as Jayne Barnard notes,
[s]cientists now recognize that an animal engaged in some form of combat, if victorious, will exit the competition with an elevated level of testosterone. The higher the hormone level, the more willing the winner is to engage in further combat. This cycle continues until the winner becomes overloaded with testosterone and, rather than going forward as a canny and effective combatant, becomes a foolish and risk-defying one. Annihilation often follows. The impact of testosterone, moreover, does not stop with animals in the wild. It has recently been measured, and the “winner effect” observed, among traders in the City of London.40
Although empiricists have not yet studied the winner effect in political settings, Barnard has applied these principles to the corporate world, most notably to chief executive officers (CEOs).41 Not only does Barnard’s and other scholars’ work demonstrate that the winner effect applies to verbal combat as well as to physical combat, it also provides chilling insights into both the causes and future of contemporary political debate. Indeed, observers have suggested that the types of “Twitter wars” that are currently being conducted in the political arena are extremely divisive and damaging to productive policy debate.42 While Barnard recognizes that it may be difficult to identify a solution to these types of concerns, since the issue may be triggered “at a molecular level,” she explicitly states that the first step to remedying a problem is recognizing that it exists.43
This Essay has sought to do precisely that by using empirical research to demonstrate that conventional means of responding to legal and political misconceptions (i.e., content-oriented speech aimed at those who are believed to have simply failed to hear the relevant information) are no longer capable of fostering and promoting rational discourse.44 While some of the current difficulties arise as a result of unconscious bias, those types of cognitive distortions are difficult to address directly, and the better option may be to approach the issue from a communication perspective.45 Not only is that type of response supported by empirical research, it also has the benefit of placing the power of change in the hands of those who most desire it.46
The road ahead will not be easy. Focusing on the method of communication may require a fundamental reimagining of how legal and political argument can and should be structured if democratic debate in the United States is to survive and thrive. When determining how best to proceed, reformers need to adopt a robust interdisciplinary approach to ensure the development of a process that is capable of addressing psychological, neurological and social factors driving the alt-fact phenomenon. The legal community will need to not only take account of data from a wide range of disciplines, including those that may have been overlooked in the past,47 it will also need to coordinate research agendas and findings with other sectors of civil society seeking to improve the quality of contemporary political discourse.48 Only through this type of well-researched, well-coordinated response can help the legal community overcome the political, legal and communicative challenges of a post-truth society and navigate the brave new world in which we all find ourselves.49
