A most interesting conversation yesterday between @NjidekaAkunyiliCrosby and author & writer @SiddharthaMitter about Njideka’s work and her series of portraits “The Beautyful Ones”, on the occasion of the publication of the accompanying monograph published by @VictoriaMiroGallery on the occasion of the exhibition at #VictoriaMiroGallery in Venice concurrent with this year’s #VeniceBiennale #MayYouLiveInInterestingTimes #SiddharthaMitter, who authored a new essay for the book reflected with Akunyili Crosby on the series’ complex history and weaved together the social, cultural, personal, and political strands of its making. For her ongoing series “The Beautyful Ones”, #NjidekaAkunyiliCrosby paints portraits of children, including members of her own family, derived from personal photographs. More recently, the series has focused on images taken during her frequent visits to Nigeria, where she lived until the age of sixteen.
