Yet only now are the majority of the neighborhood’s most prominent theaters and museums being simultaneously led by Black women — women who are fortifying and expanding their organizations in spite of funding cuts for libraries and arts programs and the rapid gentrification of their community. This was 9 years ago in NYC! Tracee Ellis Ross, Natasha Lyonne, and Kalup Linzy. NYC, 2014 Backstory: Tracee Ellis Ross had been making her own characters in video and performance art videos outside of being an actress since the late nineties. Conversations with mutual art world friends like Thelma Golden @thelmagolden and Rodney McMillan @rodney.mcmillian led her to my work. She watched some of my videos online and noticed our mutual friend Natasha Lyonne. Natasha reached out to me and said Tracee Ellis Ross wanted to meet me. I couldn't believe it! We had dinner, talked about life, art, and kikied most of the night! A most interesting conversation yesterday between @NjidekaAkunyiliCrosby and author & writer @SiddharthaMitter about Njideka’s work and her series of portraits “The Beautyful Ones”, on the occasion of the publication of the accompanying monograph published by @VictoriaMiroGallery on the occasion of the exhibition at #VictoriaMiroGallery in Venice concurrent with this year’s #VeniceBiennale #MayYouLiveInInterestingTimes #SiddharthaMitter, who authored a new essay for the book reflected with Akunyili Crosby on the series’ complex history and weaved together the social, cultural, personal, and political strands of its making. For her ongoing series “The Beautyful Ones”, #NjidekaAkunyiliCrosby paints portraits of children, including members of her own family, derived from personal photographs. More recently, the series has focused on images taken during her frequent visits to Nigeria, where she lived until the age of sixteen.
