everybody’s posting their list of books they read in 2022 and i’m here like?? whoops i knew i forgot something lol

i genuinely didn’t read a single book last year and i am mortified and i want to fix that this year but the problem is i keep intending to read, but my ADD is worse than ever these days and i have no idea how to sit and focus on doing a single thing by itself which, by its nature, reading kinda has to be? i tune out completely with audiobooks and have never been able to get through one, so that’s no help either

i used to read a lot but i have no idea how i managed it. i have so many unread books, too, just shelves and shelves of them making me feel so guilty. maybe the key is just trying to force myself to do it? maybe i just need a really good book to get me hooked and get me going?

does anybody have any tips for reading with ADD?

No real advice I’m afraid (I’m autistic so I either completely hyperfocus on a book or can’t read at all!!!) but a lot of sympathy, I’ve also gone literal years not being able to read and it’s rough ❤️ finding genres of books I genuinely truly loved as an adult was the only thing that helped me (in my case queer found family sci-fi) and it’s still hella hit and miss!

i just found a trove of amazing sapphic books to try out, so i’m bookmarking and wishlisting a lot of those. i really need to get into books that have the kinds of fic tropes i love, like queer content and found family - i’ve not read a lot of published books that have that so knowing it’s out there gives me hope!

i got back into reading this year by literally scheduling myself to read 30 minutes every weekday, and nothing on the weekends. which meant i could either take a break or read even more if i wanted to!

OOH that could work! if i have a set time and place for reading that might make it easier to fit in and if i only have to do it for a set time it won’t feel like i’m not doing enough by reading into the night, i can just read for a half hour and be done! i like it!

Audiobooks have saved me. My mental health is at an all-time low and I have managed to read one. One book this year all the way through, and it was an audiobook. Other than that, podcasts are a great way to learn something, keep up with the news, etc.; highly recommend.

god i wish i could, but sadly my ADD is horrible with audio content because i tune out really fast and miss so much. i would give anything to be able to switch to audiobooks and to actually get into podcasts, there are so many i’m so intrigued by, but it’s a nightmare for me to try and focus.
