Researching Characters So You Don't Have To Part 5 - What was Peni Parker's Canon Event?

In ATSV, we get a short glimpse of Peni Parker during Miguel's canon event explainy scene. She, along with hundreds of other spider-people enter in order to help keep Miles calm and share their own experiences with him. The only thing she says is "Miles" and she kind of tilts her head at him sadly.

If we compare this version of Peni to the version we saw in the first movie, it makes it very obvious that she went through some kind of traumatic event, probably her canon event.

So what was her canon event?

From the research I've done, I've found that her canon event is a little confusing, but I tried to make it as clear as possible.

After the events of Into the Spider-verse, Peni was approached by her classmate, Addy Brock, during class. Addy proceeded to ask her whether she was Spider-woman (or in her universe, Sp//dr). Peni brushed her off, and left without telling her. But what Peni didn't know, was that Addy was also a mech pilot, and was actually the owner of a special suit called VEN#m.

Note: Peni Parker's suit was created by Oscorp. Oscorp also used the Sym Engine which was used to create Peni's mech to create the VEN#m mech and chose Addy Brock to pilot it because of her psychological connection to it.

Now later, Peni has to fight M.O.R.B.I.U.S. but is defeated and captured by him, leading to Addy Brock's VEN#m mech being deployed to help her. During the fight, the VEN#m suit lost control and Peni had to take it down using her Sp//dr mech.

Addy and Peni's Aunt May tried to fix the VEN#m suit, but it was too late. The suit went completely crazy and took over Addy's mind, assimilated her body with cables and tendrils. When Aunt May tried to intervene, it consumed her.

Peni's canon event is completely based off the Evangelion Units 01 and 03 from the Neon Genesis Evangelion series.

Wait... looking back at ITSV how did Gwen and Peni explain their multiple day disappearance to their parents/guardians?

I think that after Peter died and Gwen's dad started obsessively blaming Spider-Women, the two of them started getting into some bad arguments cause they were both hurting and Gwen already felt guilty so having her dad unknowingly blame her as well probably worsened their relationship. So after they had fights, she would sometimes crash at a friend's house like one of the Mary Janes or if you wanna add comic elements, Harry Osborn. That's why her dad didn't find it all that strange when she disappeared

Ik the basic gist of what happened in Peni's comics so I headcannon that she doesn't have the best relationship with her uncle Ben and aunt may cause it seems like she was only SP//dr because she wss fed a bunch of stuff about it being her responsibilitity to do all this because she was only person with the same DNA as her dad and that was the only reason she became SP//dr as young as she did (she was nine). I think she had trouble making friends for a long while as well so maybe Addy, if you change up some comic elements, was her first since she was younger and she would sometimes do the same thing gwen did when she felt like everything was too much. That's why she was so ruined during ATSV because Addy, instead of just being a classmate and fellow pilot, was a friend she actually cared about.

And maybe sometimes Peni would chill with her universe's Daredevil

At this point, you probably get that I kinda dislike her May and Ben even if I don't know everything about their relationship becsuse I have yet to read her comics

Small au thing that came to my mind(this assumes her canon event was the death of her Aunt May & Addy Brock)

An au where Peni was able to disrupt her "canon event" in a sense, although she didn't come out of it unscathed. Peni was able to recover quicker, and because of that, the VEN#M suit wasn't able to consume Addy & Aunt May fast enough before Peni defeated it. Addy had been harmed and still has to deal with the trauma of everything, but still survived. Aunt May survived as well, but she went into a coma for an indefinite amount of time

Peni’s canon event/trauma

After the battle with M.O.R.B.I.U.S. VEN#m stopped responding to Addy's commands, the Sym Engine going berserk. Interfacing with Addy's mind, it began assimilating her body with biomechanical cables and tendrils

When May entered the mech to shut it down, Addy pleaded to be saved.

Peni fought VEN#M hoping to save May and Addy, but it completely assimilated both of them. Peni was able to trap it, when she opened the VEN#M suit, she finds it empty, with only cable tendrils.

My headcanon for their first date is that Peni was like "I need to dress up as the coolest guy I know" and then showed up with the most ancient 1930 outfit she could find in 3100

Are there even fans of this ship? I literally had to imagine their dynamic because in the comics they barely interact and I didn't see anyone making content about them

First piece is Peni in classic cute Peni Parker pose. Her design is a mix of both her comic and itsv look

Second piece is a steampunk au of Peni piloting a steam punk mech (this one took all my heart and soul in an anime battle to the death to draw)

Bottom pieces depicts partially venomized Peni (in an au where Addy survives and partners with the symbiote and become rivals/teammates with Peni. Venomized Peni would happen in a story where Peni's Spider calls in sick and Addy gets hospitalized in battle without Peni looking out for her)

Ok Peni Parker’s age is definitely up to interpretation,(4year differential)simply because of her og suit in ITSV. We don’t(not that I remember)see it in the comics. That means, to an extent, this is not the same Peni Parker as the comics. (as with most of the spiders) But I still think a lot of the same events happen. For instance, her canon event that had her so sad in ATSV was most likely still the VEN#m suit with Addy Brock and May.

Timeline:

In the comics at age 9 she takes her fathers place to pilot the SP//dr Suit and joins spiderverse/spidergeddon at age 14. After spiderverse is when M.O.R.B.I.U.S. and VEN#m happen. Then she is recruited to spidergeddon again.

Following this timeline, she was probably 12/13 in the first movie(a case could be made for 11), making her 13/14 in the new movie with the 16 mo. jump.
