yet another fucking idiot moderator or a ceo or whatever is ruining the app you like. or maybe youre worried about your data being used to feed ai. or whatever. you wanna pack up and move. but youre fucking tired of doing it literally every goddamn time this happens- you have to convince your mutuals and everyone else to also make an account on shitlr.xyz and not everyone wants that.
solution: the fediverse is a group of social networks all running on the same protocol. they can all talk to each other, everyone gets the kind of social media they want, and nobody has to make a new account* again (unless you really dont like the admin or the ui is not to your taste.)
(*by new account, i mean that most instances have the option to export your entire profile, follows, followers, posts, favorites, etc to another account on another platform- and redirect your old one to your new one. its usually super easy and takes like 5 minutes!!!)
you can start browsing here for your server and ui of your choice. you dont even have to be limited to one- plenty of people have multiple accounts!
at some point tumblr *was* supposed to get federated into this system, but i doubt it'll happen at this rate
#youve heard of mastodon but theres way better instances out there#find me @[email protected]#bluesky runs on a different protocol but so far its not really used like at all except by like 10 people#also admins can ban entire instances from interacting with theirs so you can get preemptive protection from chuds#i recc sharkkey instances tbh#i like the desktop/web ui and its compatible with mastodon mobile apps#labz.txt

HostArmada Review: The Most Customer Centric Hosting Platform Yet?
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/hostarmada-review-the-most-customer-centric-hosting-platform-yet/
HostArmada Review: The Most Customer Centric Hosting Platform Yet?
When I decided to switch my hosting provider, I stumbled on HostArmada and decided to give them a shot. It was a risky choice, though. Emerging providers are, sometimes, not recommendable because of their unproven reliability and limited track record. But HostArmada proves to be different. Entirely different.
HostArmada swept me off my feet with its advanced security and performance-focused features out-of-the-box. What’s more, their servers are hosted on LiteSpeed web servers – almost 11X faster than the Apache servers! As a website owner and developer, I’ve evaluated and tested different hosting providers to find the best fit for my clients and projects. I can boldly say it’s one of the best new hosts I’ve reviewed, and you’ll soon find out why.
In the rest of this HostArmada review, I’ll conduct real-life tests to evaluate this host’s features, pricing plans, performance and customer support. I also included other vitals to help you make an informed decision. Ready? Let’s get started!
HostArmada Review
HostArmada made its debut into the hosting industry five years ago. fresh to the scene. Though they’re still fresh to the scene, they have quickly climbed the ranks to become one of the most popular and reliable web hosts on the internet. In fact, this host is often pitted against industry giants like BlueHost, Hostinger and A2 Hosting…all because of its reliability, speed and performance.
Of course, since they’re less than a decade in the game, one would expect basic features out-of-the-box. However, during my research, I discovered that each feature/tool on their platform is designed to give you a stress-free, secure and optimized web performance.
Like every A-list provider, HostArmada offers all kinds of web hosting you’ll need – WordPress, shared reseller, VPS, and dedicated hosting services. In addition, they also provide open source and development hosting for developers and programmers.
Whichever plan you choose to settle for, you’ll enjoy all the default hosting features such as free SSL certificates, WAF & network firewall, daily backups, etc. They don’t offer free trials or demos, but you get a 45-day money-back guarantee period to decide if they’re worth your investment.
The company snagged a 4.9 star review from over 800 users on TrustPilot:
HostArmada Rating – my personal take
Do your research. You’ll find hundreds (if not thousands) of web hosting providers, each promising secure, reliable, and fast performance. In my experience using and reviewing web hosts, I’ve discovered that a sheer number of them aren’t true to their words. Even the best of them sometimes fall short of their claims.
To evaluate each comparatively, I developed a personal web hosting review system that examines key factors such as performance, reliability, customer support, pricing and features. I use a 1 – 5 grading system, with one as the lowest and five as the highest a provider can get.
Quality My rating Why I gave this score Features and specs 4.9 Free SSL, backups, DoS/DDoS protection, NGINX & LiteSpeed web servers, SSD servers, and unlimited email accounts are a few features you’ll enjoy when you sign up with this provider. However, I gave them this score because their best features (LiteSpeed servers, for instance) are only available on the highest plans. Pricing 4.5 HostArmada is one of the cheapest providers in the market, starting at $2.49/mo. You’ll enjoy many of their enterprise-grade features at this price (best if you’re just getting started online!) However, I discovered that the discounts only apply when you’re paying for a longer duration. This is why I awarded them this score. Performance stats 4.7 I tested HostArmada’s performance and discovered they have an incredible loading speed (240ms) and uptime (100%). I’ve encountered hosts within the same price bracket with better performance stats, so I gave them a 4.7 here. Ease of use 4.6 HostArmada has an attractive and user-friendly interface, an advantage for beginners and pros looking for a stress-free platform. But they still rely on the traditional cPanel for backend management, which is quite old-fashioned for me. This is why I gave them this score. Customer support guarantee 5.0 Reach out to HostArmada’s support team at this second, and they’ll respond soon. Aside from their quick responses, they also offer up to five levels of customer support – email, phone, live chat, ticket and knowledgebase. This is why they have a 5.0 here.
HostArmada Hosting Plans & Pricing – 2024
Just like every other A-grade web host, HostArmada offers all the major types of web hosting – shared, reseller, wordpress, VPS and dedicated hosting.
They also have service-specific hosting plans, such as WooCommerce, Magento, Node.js, Open Source, and development hosting. As I shared earlier, you’ll get a 30-day money-back guarantee (this is only available for yearly payments). They also operate on a pay-as-you-go basis, so you don’t have to worry about cancellation fees.
Here’s a summary of their hosting packages.

VPS plans are your best bet if you’re tired of shared servers but need a reliable and scalable alternative without overcommitting on costs. HostArmada VPS plans are built to handle resource-intensive projects.
For a balance between costs and features, go for the Web Raider VPS plan. This gives you access to all the features on lesser plans, cPanel and WHM, up to 5 TB bandwidth, 160 GB SSD space and Nginx web server caches for faster load times.
Who’s this for?
If your website traffic is growing sporadically, it’s likely a sign that you need VPS hosting. Compared to other types of plans, HostArmada VPS hosting is designed to provide redundant and scalable cloud hosting solutions. On all plans, you’ll enjoy all fully managed hosting services, hosting features, full root access, a minimum of 2 CPU cores, five free cPanel accounts, and advanced caching features.

Who’s this for?
Do you need a server that can accommodate your large web traffic? Then dedicated hosting might be right for you! More specifically, it is important to protect user data from the risks of a shared server. Agencies, developers, and IT professionals looking to manage their client’s websites on one platform can also opt for a dedicated server.
HostArmada’s Open Source Hosting Plans
Start Dock
Space offered – 15 GB SSD storage

Price – $2.49/month
HostArmada’s open-source hosting plans are a combination of their shared hosting plans and Open Source-specific features. If you’re just starting with them, I recommend you opt for the Web Wrap plan because it gives you access to advanced features at a friendly price. Their services are fully managed, so you don’t have to worry about installing or updating your applications, visual themes, and modules.
Who’s this for?
The HostArmada open-source plans are designed for tech startups, developers, enterprise organizations, service providers, and anyone who needs to build or manage open-source projects efficiently.

Speed Reaper
Space offered – 40 SSD storage
Bandwidth – 90 GB
Number of websites – Unlimited websites allowed
Price – $2.49/month
AAs you can see, this is also similar to the shared and open-source hosting plans. I recommend the Web Wrap plan to enjoy rich features at a friendly cost. Luckily, HostArmada’s plans are scalable, so you can seamlessly move to higher plans as your needs grow.
Who’s this for?
Well, you guessed right. The HostArmada Development Hosting plan is designed for developers or other IT professionals needing a developer-friendly hosting environment. You have full access to developer tools such as PHP, SQL, Python, Node.js, SSH access, WP – CLI, etc.
Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s get into the exciting parts.
HostArmada’s Features
Here are some of the top features offered on all the HostArmada plans:
Free website transfer and SSL certificates
Unlimited databases and FTP accounts
Multiple PHP versions
24/7 human support
Free drag and drop SiteBuilder
Free WAF & IP Firewall
AMP EPYC CPU Cores
Daily backups
Yes…all of these are default hosting features. What makes HostArmada different from other providers in the same category?
For me, it’s their commitment to innovation and providing advanced and modern performance-based features at a competitive price. In fact, all their services pass ten levels of quality assessment before they are released to users!
For starters, I love how they invest in advanced speed-enhancing features. They use the latest AMD Epyc processors, identified as the fastest CPU processors compared to the AMD architectures. At the core of their services is the LiteSpeed web server, which outperforms Apache and Nginx servers combined!
Do you know that most of their services are fully managed? This means if you have other pressing business commitments or are growing beyond your capacity, you don’t have to worry about losing revenue because they manage the technical side of your web hosting.
Their quality customer support makes them top my list. As a website owner, I’ve had my fair share of struggles with web hosts with subpar customer service. Seeing HostArmada’s distinctive performance is a breath of fresh air. See what other users have to say:
Impressive!
HostArmada’s Performance
You’d hardly find a web host who’s upfront about its performance metrics. A good number of them promise reliable performance and speed with minimal downtime. How do you validate this?
Personally, I always recommend trying out the host’s performance before committing for the long term. Sometimes, you’ll find hosts willing to give you a demo or free trial to eliminate all guesses. HostArmada doesn’t offer any of these, so I’ll share my experience with this web host after purchasing their shared hosting plan.
For this test, we’ll focus on three vital performance metrics:
Uptime measures the reliability of your web host. It is the percentage of time your website is accessible to users. No web server is perfect, but a good uptime is 99.0% – 99.99%.
Load time measures how your web page loads when users click on the URL. A good loading time should be >3s.
TTFB measures the time a user takes to receive the first byte of data from your web server. Google recommends a TTFB of 800ms or less.
In a sentence, the faster (or lower) the load time and TTFB, the faster the server delivers your web data to users when they click on the URL. A good uptime also means your website will experience little to no downtime yearly, which is an advantage if you’re in the eCommerce or SaaS niche. All these metrics improve your search engine performance and conversion rates.
HostArmada uses NGINX & LiteSpeed web servers, has advanced caching features, SSD storage drives, high-performance AMD EPYC CPU Cores, and integrates with CloudFlare CDN (content delivery network) – all of which are designed to boost your performance above others hosted on average providers.
In addition, all the websites are hosted on the cloud, which means improved scalability, reliability and flexibility! They also promise a 99.9% uptime, which means your website will always be accessible except during scheduled maintenance.
Let’s validate their claims!
I used GTMetrix to test a website hosted on HostArmada and these were the results:
HostArmada’s performance didn’t fall short of my expectations! Their servers responded in 293ms (0.293s), which is impressive. The overall performance was 99%, which is super impressive.
To test their uptime, I used Uptime Robot to evaluate their performance in the last 30 days. Here’s what I got:
So far, their website has been experiencing 100% uptime, which validates their 99.99% uptime claims.
HostArmada’s Customer Support
HostArmada offers six levels of customer support – knowledgebase, tutorials, live chat, email, phone and ticket.
Let’s examine each in detail:
Knowledgebase
Are you new to web hosting? No problem! HostArmada has a rich resource that caters to almost all vitals on its platform. This includes DIY how-to articles on web hosting, open-source applications, billing and many more:
There’s also a search bar to help you find solutions to issues swiftly.
Tutorials:
If you prefer DIY solutions, you’ll love the detailed articles provided in the HostArmada Learning Center on how to get started or manage your website on their platform. They have a guide on almost all web hosting-related topics and website-relevant topics like how to use Google Analytics:
Support Ticket:
HostArmada also allows users to submit queries via an online ticket, although this is only available to paid users.
Phone:
If you prefer a faster response, HostArmada allows you to speak directly with any of their expert support team via phone. However, there are call charges for locations outside the US.
Live Chat:
HostArmada also allows you to chat live with their hosting experts 24/7/365. The live chat button is tucked at the bottom right corner of their website so that users can easily submit queries.
I initiated a chat to inquire about their services and test their response time. I got a response almost immediately.
Email
Lastly, if all other channels are unresponsive, you can reach out to them via email. You can easily create support tickets on their website that will automatically be forwarded to your email for further assistance.
The best part is that you can chat with specific agents for an even faster response. For example, if you’re experiencing issues related to payments, you can contact the sales department instead.
HostArmada’s security features
I personally love how HostArmada prioritizes the security of websites hosted on their platform. They go beyond the surface-level free SSL certificates and backups to provide top-of-the-line security features, even on their smallest plans.
Their security checks begin with their web servers. Unlike other hosts, they built a security system that checks every IP address connecting their web servers for threats and cyber attacks. For example, they reduce/eliminate the risks of DDoS attacks by establishing a ‘Connection Limit’ for each IP address. This limit reduces the number of requests sent from a single IP address.
Another advantage is their all-round security system – Environment Security Fleet – that secures user web hosting accounts and their associated files. They use advanced network firewalls (with reCAPTCHA protection) and WAF, intrusion detection and prevention systems, malware scanning, and OS patch management features to protect your website from further attacks.
Amazing!
There’s a caveat, though. HostArmada’s daily backups are limited (7 for the smallest shared hosting plan). I’ve seen other providers with similar features provide unlimited daily backups. I hope they can improve on this in the future.
HostArmada’s website builders
Another thing I love about this provider is how they’ve made it easier for anyone to kickstart their digital journey. They have an extensive domain directory where you can find and register the perfect domain for your business:
You can register your domain name for one year without paying any charge:
And when it’s time to build your website, you can opt for any of their plans to access their custom drag-and-drop website builder — HostArmada Website Builder:
You can also build your website with one-click on any of their affiliated CMSs – WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, PrestaShop, and Magento.
Note: If you’re choosing a specific website builder, for instance, WordPress, opt for the web hosting service that specializes or offers support for that platform. HostArmada has WordPress, WooCommerce, and Magento Hosting plans.
User-Friendliness – Ease of use
HostArmada has a modern and intuitive user interface. I find it attractive at first glance, likely because of the blue, purple and pink pastel colors. The icons and texts are also well placed, which makes it easy for anyone to operate, even for beginners. Having a modern design is only one part of the puzzle. Let’s see how easy it is to register and manage an account on HostArmada:
Registering an account with HostArmada
To have full access to any of HostArmada’s hosting features, you have to pay for any of their hosting plans. Here’s how:
Step 1:
Navigate to the top menu bar and click ‘Hosting.’ Proceed to choose any hosting plan from the list. Next, select your preferred package and click ‘Get Started.’
Step 2:
You’ll be redirected to a domain selection page. Here, you can either register a new domain, transfer your domain from another registrar or use your existing domain and update your nameservers:
Step 3:
Next, choose your billing cycle and data centers. You’ll likely see upsells on this page to improve your web performance:
Then, click ‘Preview Order’ to make payments.
Step 4:
Next, review your orders before making payments. I noticed they added an ID protection to the checkout by default. Although it’s useful, I don’t like how it was pre-selected:
Step 5:
Lastly, you’ll be redirected to the checkout page to make payments for your order. Here, input your name, billing address and billing details. They accept only two forms of payment – PayPal and Credit Card. Once you’ve imputed all the necessities, click on ‘Complete Order.’
HostArmada’s Control Panel
As you can see, HostArmada has an intuitive user interface. I would have loved it if they built a custom control panel to match.
However, they use the traditional cPanel to reduce the friction in learning for their web users. This can easily be accessible via the ‘Client Area’
Here, you’ll find all the functionalities to set up and manage your account, including setting up email accounts, installing WordPress in one-click, creating databases, etc.
HostArmada is also compatible with WHM for managing multiple cPanel accounts simultaneously. This is a great feature if you’re buying reseller, VPS or dedicated hosting plans:
Installing WordPress on HostArmada
Installing WordPress on HostArmada is equally effortless. As with other hosting providers with cPanel, you can find and install WordPress in one-click with the Softaculous Auto Installer.
To do this, log into your cPanel account and navigate to the Software section, where you’ll find the Softaculous Apps Installer:
Once you click on it, you’ll be directed to the Softaculous Dashboard, where WordPress is listed under ‘Top Scripts’
Proceed to click on the WordPress icon:
Before you install it, you’ll be required to configure some things. Navigate to the ‘Software Setup’ section to do this. First, choose the WordPress version you wish to install:
Next, enter the site name/ description and create an admin account. Make sure you use details you can easily remember when creating your admin account.
Lastly, select your preferred WordPress theme and click ‘Install’
Voila! You’ll get a congratulatory message once it’s installed:
Server FootPrint and CDS
While fast loading times and uptime are excellent performance metrics, you also need to consider the server footprint of a web host before making any commitments. This is because the closer your host server is to your target audience, the faster your website will load for users in that location. You also need to consider how widespread the data centers are. Web hosts with large server footprints offer better global coverage, which means users from different regions can experience optimal performance when navigating your site.
In addition, if your web host uses a content delivery network (or CDN), it significantly improves loading times by reducing the time to the first byte.
HostArmada has 23 data centers in 5 continents, including North America, Europe and Asia. Their web servers are also powered by CloudFlare CDN, one of the biggest and most reliable in the market.
Conclusion: Do We Recommend HostArmada?
HostArmada might be less than a decade old, but its performance, specs, competitive pricing and customer support make it one of the best in the market. I definitely recommend it!
Whether you’re just launching a new website or a tech startup needing robust infrastructure and reliable support, HostArmada is a good start. Plus, their newness is an advantage. Since they’re already making strides in the hosting industry, I believe they still have better features and updates coming up. Don’t miss out!!

FAQs
What is the speed of HostArmada?
HostArmada claims their infrastructure is connected with 7000 Mbps (Gbps). This means that their servers can handle large volumes of data flow, even during peak hours. This means a better user experience and higher chances of topping the search results.
HostArmada vs Hostinger: Which is better?
HostArmada and Hostinger are reputable providers, each with strengths and service offerings. The difference between the two largely depends on your specific needs and the feature combination these providers have to meet your needs.
For performance, I’ll opt for HostArmada. They both have an impressive load time. However, Hostinger doesn’t offer SSD storage in any of their plans.
If you’re looking to save costs, Hostinger is the way to go. Their plans start at $2.99/month (plus an extra three months free), while HostArmada costs $2.49/month (for a triennial payment).
Overall, I’ll pick HostArmada over Hostinger because of their rich feature list, advanced performance and security technologies and excellent customer support.
What are some HostArmada’s alternatives?
If you’re thinking of using other HostArmada’s alternatives, try out Siteground, BlueHost, ScalaHosting, and Cloudways.

🌟 New
The character limit has been raised from 500 characters to 1,975 characters for all replies in our apps. The limit was previously raised on the web last month.
We have added new “since” and “before” search operators. Using both together will allow you to limit your search to a specific date range.
The number of online community members is now displayed in community recommendations and search results.
Posts reblogged into communities will no longer show notes from outside the community’s reblog.
Tumblr is home to some of the most incredible creatives on the web, from brilliant artists to creative fandoms. However, any such large community will also inevitably have bad actors who try to take advantage of the kindness and generosity of the community members, so please take a look at our new guide on how to avoid scammers.
🛠 Fixed
We weren’t displaying the right error message when admins were trying to update their community handle with invalid characters. This is fixed now!
When you receive a lot of grouped Activity items on Web, we now fetch more Activity items, so you can scroll through more Activity items before you need to click “See Everything”.
Ads are no longer interrupting background audio in the iOS app as of version 36.7. Please update your apps!
🚧 Ongoing
In the iOS app, adding tags to a queued/drafted reblog will remove its queue/draft state, meaning the action button switches to “Reblog” which publishes the reblog if tapped. The fix will be in version 36.8 of the iOS app. For now, either add tags to those on the Web, or be extra careful about checking the action button before tapping it.
🌱 Upcoming

The interesting thing about QSMP is that it is a perfect example of how people spontaneously mimic the structures of human societies when they are thrown into a situation together, and the best part is that the resulting dynamics were totally unforeseen by Quackity himself.
We knew that the point of creating pairs and assigning each of them a little creature to protect was to incentivize people to break the language barrier and bridge the cultural gap—that’s the whole reason this server existed. And it worked wonderfully. What I’m sure the admins didn’t account for, however, is that because these creatures were played by real people, they developed personalities of their own and before they knew it, what was supposed to be a temporary event turned into the very core of the server.
It's hard to explain to people the sheer impact that the eggs left on all of us without sounding like we’re completely insane. Our brains are really bad at making the difference between real and fictional relationships (if there even is such a thing), so when you spend weeks taking care of a little egg that follows you around and eats the food you make and calls you its parent, you don’t just go about your day pretending that it’s all a game.
(Except Roier. This guy has exceptional mental fortitude.)
We are social animals. We look out for each other. When someone lets an egg die, it feels like a failure on ourselves and the people who put their faith in us. Look at Slime, he literally exiled himself for it. So they start weaving a net to stop their fall, a web of connections between the islanders that can withstand outside pressure. It takes a village, they say. The islanders came together to protect something dear to their hearts, and from their efforts bloomed a tight-knit community that never would have seen the light of day in different circumstances.
Accidents still happen, of course. But at least you’re not alone to face them. I often think about how every single person on the server at the time was immediately willing to accompany Jaiden and Roier on an 8k blocks journey to the place of Bobby’s death, not because Cucurucho told them to, but because they didn’t want the pair to face this hardship on their own. They didn’t need to know them well to volunteer—hell, the francophones had literally crash-landed the day before and Kamel probably thought that Bobby was some kind of pet still. They just did, because that’s what people do for each other. They’ll stand outside of the room where two grieving parents are saying goodbye to their child and discuss plans for a funeral because they understand that it’s the last thing you want to think about when you’re mourning, and someone has to do the unpleasant work.
Grief is a really silly and complicated thing that is difficult to simulate. I don’t think anyone would willingly put themselves in the state of anguish that some of the players were in during that time. Like Bad said, it was a genuinely traumatizing experience, yet you just had to live through it to understand why he didn’t regret any of it. These eggs were their babies—imagine someone gives you a little creature and asks you to sing them lullabies and bring them on adventures until it becomes something you look forward to every day, only to take them away from you on a whim—how fucked up is that?
But even in those moments of tragedies, there is some light to be found. Even as the Brazilians are sat around Maximus in a sullen silence while he plays the harmonica, the francophones are busy collecting bricks a couple feet away and discussing their plans for Pomme—literally ensuring the future of the island in real time. And they did a fantastic job of it. I’ve never seen people fight so hard for the life of a Minecraft egg; French viewers were literally threatening to organize a revolution on the bird app in case things didn’t go their way. You don’t typically do that for a two-week old cubito.
When you think about it, prying this server from their cold dead hands was really the only way to end this.

YouTube Downloads through VLC: Step by Step
[EDIT: I've been receiving reports for some time now that this method no longer works. I suspect something about the switch to YouTube Music as a separate app, and/or YouTube's ongoing attempts to force Chrome use, broke the compatibility with the Github version of youtube.luac -- I haven't managed to look into whether there's an updated working version out there yet. Sorry!]
So this guide to easily downloading off YouTube is super helpful, but there's enough important information hidden in the reblogs that (with the permission of OP @queriesntheories ) I'm doing a more step-by-step version.
Please note: these downloads will be in YouTube quality. My test video download is coming through at 360p, even though the video I'm starting from is set to 720p. They're legible, but they won't look great on a TV. For high visual quality, you'll want to seek out other methods.
This guide is written for Windows 10, since that's what I can test on. It's been tested on Firefox, Chrome, and Edge (which is a Chromium browser, so the method should work in other Chromium browsers too). So far, I haven't tracked down a way to use this download method on mobile.
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:
I'll try to make this pretty beginner-friendly, but I am going to assume that you know how to right-click, double-click, navigate right-click menus, click-and-drag, use keyboard shortcuts that are given to you (for example, how to use Ctrl+A), and get the URL for any YouTube video you want to download.
You'll also need to download and install one or more programs off the internet using .exe files, if you don't have these programs already. Please make sure you know how to use your firewall and antivirus to keep your computer safe, and google any names you don't recognize before allowing permission for each file. You can also hover your mouse over each link in this post to make sure it goes where I'm saying it will go.
YOU WILL NEED:
A computer where you have admin permissions. This is usually a computer you own or have the main login on. Sadly, a shared computer like the ones at universities and libraries will not work for this.
Enough space on your computer to install the programs listed below, if you don't have them already, and some space to save your downloaded files to. The files are pretty small because of the low video quality.
A simple text editing program. Notepad is the one that usually comes with Windows. If it lets you change fonts, it's too fancy. A notepad designed specifically to edit program code without messing it up is Notepad++, which you can download here.
A web browser. I use Firefox, which you can get here. Chrome or other Chrome-based browsers should also work. I haven't tested in Safari.
An Internet connection fast enough to load YouTube. A little buffering is fine. The downloads will happen much faster than streaming the entire video, unless your internet is very slow.
VLC Media Player, which you can get here. It's a free player for music and videos, available on Windows, Android, and iOS, and it can play almost any format of video or audio file that exists. We'll be using it for one of the central steps in this process.
If you want just the audio from a YouTube video, you'll need to download the video and then use a different program to copy the audio into its own file. At the end of this post, I'll have instructions for that, using a free sound editor called Audacity.
SETUP TO DOWNLOAD:
The first time you do this, you'll need to set VLC up so it can do what you want. This is where we need Notepad and admin permissions. You shouldn't need to repeat this process unless you're reinstalling VLC.
If VLC is open, close it.
In your computer's file system (File Explorer on Windows), go to C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\lua\playlist
If you're not familiar with File Explorer, you'll start by clicking where the left side shows (C:). Then in the big main window, you'll double-click each folder that you see in the file path, in order - so in this case, when you're in C: you need to look for Program Files. (There will be two of them. You want the one without the x86 at the end.) Then inside Program Files you're looking for VideoLAN, and so forth through the whole path.
Once you're inside the "playlist" folder, you'll see a lot of files ending in .luac - they're in alphabetical order. The one you want to edit is youtube.luac which is probably at the bottom.
You can't edit youtube.luac while it's in this folder. Click and drag it out of the playlist folder to somewhere else you can find it - your desktop, for instance. Your computer will ask for admin permission to move the file. Click the "Continue" button with the blue and yellow shield.
Now that the file is moved, double-click on it. The Microsoft Store will want you to search for a program to open the .luac file type with. Don't go to the Microsoft Store, just click on the blue "More apps" below that option, and you'll get a list that should include your notepad program. Click on it and click OK.
The file that opens up will be absolutely full of gibberish-looking code. That's fine. Use Ctrl+A to select everything inside the file, then Backspace or Delete to delete it. Don't close the file yet.
In your web browser, go to https://github.com/videolan/vlc/blob/master/share/lua/playlist/youtube.lua
Click in the part of the Github page that has a bunch of mostly blue code in it. Use Ctrl+A to select all of that code, Ctrl+C to copy it, then come back into your empty youtube.luac file and use Ctrl+P to paste the whole chunk of code into the file.
Save the youtube.luac file (Ctrl+S or File > Save in the upper left corner of the notepad program), then close the notepad program.
Drag youtube.luac back into the folder it came from. The computer will ask for admin permission again. Give it permission.
Now you can close Github and Notepad. You're ready to start downloading!
HOW TO DOWNLOAD:
First, get your YouTube link. It should look something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abc123DEF45 If it's longer, you can delete any extra stuff after that first set of letters and numbers, but you don't have to.
Now open VLC. Go to Media > Open Network Stream and paste your YouTube link into the box that comes up. Click Play. Wait until the video starts to play, then you can pause it if you want so it's not distracting you during the next part.
(If nothing happens, you probably forgot to put youtube.luac back. coughs)
In VLC, go to Tools > Codec Information. At the bottom of the pop-up box you'll see a long string of gibberish in a box labeled Location. Click in the Location box. It won't look like it clicked properly, but when you press Ctrl+A, it should select all. Use Ctrl+C to copy it.
In your web browser, paste the entire string of gibberish and hit Enter. Your same YouTube video should come up, but without any of the YouTube interface around it. This is where the video actually lives on YouTube's servers. YouTube really, really doesn't like to show this address to humans, which is why we needed VLC to be like "hi I'm just a little video player" and get it for us.
Because, if you're looking at the place where the video actually lives, you can just right-click-download it, and YouTube can't stop you.
Right-click on your video. Choose "Save Video As". Choose where to save it to - I use my computer's built-in Music or Videos folders.
Give it a name other than "videoplayback" so you can tell it apart from your other downloads.
The "Save As Type" dropdown under the Name field will probably default to MP4. This is a good versatile video format that most video players can read. If you need a different format, you can convert the download later. (That's a whole other post topic.)
Click Save, and your video will start downloading! It may take a few minutes to fully download, depending on your video length and internet speed. Once the download finishes, congratulations! You have successfully downloaded a YouTube video!
If you'd like to convert your video into a (usually smaller) audio file, so you can put it on a music player, it's time to install and set up Audacity.
INSTALLING AUDACITY (first time setup for audio file conversion):
You can get Audacity here. If you're following along on Windows 10, choose the "64-bit installer (recommended)". Run the installer, but don't open Audacity at the end, or if it does open, close it again.
On that same Audacity download page, scroll down past the installers to the "Additional resources". You'll see a box with a "Link to FFmpeg library". This is where you'll get the add-on program that will let Audacity open your downloaded YouTube video, so you can tell it to make an audio-only file. The link will take you to this page on the Audacity support wiki, which will always have the most up-to-date information on how to install the file you need here.
From that wiki page, follow the link to the actual FFmpeg library. If you're not using an adblocker, be careful not to click on any of the ads showing you download buttons. The link you want is bold blue text under "FFmpeg Installer for Audacity 3.2 and later", and looks something like this: "FFmpeg_5.0.0_for_Audacity_on_Windows_x86.exe". Download and install it. Without this, Audacity won't be able to open MP4 files downloaded from YouTube.
CONVERTING TO AUDIO:
Make sure you know where to find your downloaded MP4 video file. This file won't go away when you "convert" it - you'll just be copying the audio into a different file.
Open up Audacity.
Go to File > Open and choose your video file.
You'll get one of those soundwave file displays you see in recording booths and so forth. Audacity is a good solid choice if you want to teach yourself to edit soundwave files, but that's not what we're here for right now.
Go to File > Export Audio. The File Name will populate to match the video's filename, but you can edit it if you want.
Click the Browse button next to the Folder box, and choose where to save your new audio file to. I use my computer's Music folder.
You can click on the Format dropdown and choose an audio file type. If you're not sure which one you want, MP3 is the most common and versatile.
If you'd like your music player to know the artist, album, and so forth for your audio track, you can edit that later in File Manager, or you can put the information in with the Edit Metadata button here. You can leave any of the slots blank, for instance if you don't have a track number because it's a YouTube video.
Once everything is set up, click Export, and your new audio file will be created. Go forth and listen!

Updates
🌟 Neu

November is upon us, and with it, Novaember! 🩵🧡✨
For those who weren't around last year or would like a refresher, Novaember is a month long Novae-centered creative event. We (the admins of the Novae Galaxy discord server) have put together a bingo card filled with prompts, and the idea is to create a bunch of awesome Novae fan content and have fun in the community!
Continue reading to see our Rules, Guide, & the 2024 Card
BINGO RULES:
These prompts are not limited to fanart! If you would like to explore and share other means of expression - like music, fanfic, poetry, cosplay, collage, quilting, etc - please do so!
Do not feel restricted to romantic relationships! If you would like to explore platonic, queerplatonic, familial, etc. relationships, please do so.
Please keep your works SFW if you would like us to reblog/retweet/highlight your works, and adhere to the guidelines of the site/community you are posting to - be it the Novae Galaxy Discord, Tumblr, Twitter, or Instagram (links available in the sidebar)
Please use the tags #novaember #novaemberbingo and/or #novaember2024 and tag our account @novaemberbingo if you would like to see your works shared (if not, just let us know!)
We want everyone to have fun with these! The goal is to bring the community together and create more fanworks. Don’t be afraid to make friends and spread the love for Novae!
If you have any questions or would like clarification on anything, shoot us a message and we’ll get back with you as soon as we can!
HOW TO:
READ THE CARD
In the same way we read the ‘column + number’ on a BINGO card (B2, B4, I29, etc.), each column title is paired with a box in its same column.
On Novaember cards, each column is labeled with a category, and each box represents a prompt, so together they are read as ‘category + prompt’.
For example, the first box in the first column on the default card is read as ‘Event: Occult’.
How you interpret each pairing of category + prompt is completely up to you, and if you get stuck, you can always choose a different pair.
PLAY
Novaember 2024 Card
Or click here to get this year’s card. This page may not appear if you are on the Tumblr app from an Android device. If this happens, open the link from your web browser in mobile.
Standard BINGO

Wijzigingen
🌟Nieuw

Site Update - 8/3/2023
Hi Pillowfolks!
How has your summer (or winter) been? Our team is back with a new update! As always, we will be monitoring closely for any unexpected bugs after this release, so please let us know if you run into any.
New Features/Improvements
Premium Subscription Updates - Per the request of many users, we’ve made a number of updates to creating & editing Premium Subscriptions.
Users can now make credit-only Subscriptions without needing to enter in payment information, if your credit balance can fully cover at least one payment of the features fees.
Users can also now apply a custom portion of their available accrued credit monthly– i.e., if the cost of features is $5.97 every month, you can choose to cover only a portion of the cost of features with your credit.
Users who have recently canceled a Subscription no longer have to wait until the payment period expires to create a new Subscription.
To access Pillowfort Premium, click on the “PF Premium” icon located in the left-hand sidebar. This page will allow you to convert your legacy donations to Pillowfort premium, review & edit your subscriptions, and more.
Premium Image Upload Limit Increase: Good news! We’ve raised the limit for Premium Image Uploads to 6MB (formerly 4MB), at no extra cost! We may raise the limit further depending on how the subscriptions service performs and how our data fees fare.
Premium Subscription Landing Page & Frames Preview: We improved what users who do not have a Premium Subscription see on the Subscription management page to provide more information about the Premium features available. This includes the ability to preview all premium frames available.
New Premium Frame: We’ve released a new premium avatar frame! We hope you like it. We also have more premium avatar frames in the works that will be released later this month.

Modless / Abandoned Communities Update - Our Developers have made changes to our admin tools to allow our Customer Service Team to be able to change Community Ownership and add/remove Moderators to help revitalize abandoned and modless Communities. We will make a post soon explaining the process for requesting to become a Mod and/or Owner of a Community.
Bug Fixes/Misc Improvements
Some users were not receiving confirmation e-mails when their Pillowfort Premium Subscription was successfully charged. This should now be fixed. Please let us know if you are still not receiving those e-mails.
Related to the above bug, some users who were using their credit balance in Subscriptions were not seeing their credit balance being properly updated to reflect the credit used in those Subscriptions. We have now synced these Subscriptions, so you should see a decrease in your account’s credit balance if you are using that credit in a Subscription.
Fixed a bug where users were unable to delete their accounts in certain scenarios.
Fixed bug that displayed errors on the log-in page incorrectly.
Made improvements to how post images load on Pillowfort, to reduce image loading errors and improve efficiency for users with slow web connections.
Fixed a bug causing the checkmark on avatar frame selection in Settings to display improperly.
Terms of Service Update
We have made a small update to our ToS to specify that “deepfakes” and other digitally-altered pornographic images of real people are considered involuntary pornography and thus prohibited.
And that’s all for today! With this update out, our team will now be working full steam on post drafts, post scheduling queuing, and the progressive mobile app! Be sure to keep checking back on our Pillowfort Dev Blog for further status updates on upcoming features.
Best,
Staff

Prevent HTTP Parameter Pollution in Laravel with Secure Coding
Understanding HTTP Parameter Pollution in Laravel
HTTP Parameter Pollution (HPP) is a web security vulnerability that occurs when an attacker manipulates multiple HTTP parameters with the same name to bypass security controls, exploit application logic, or perform malicious actions. Laravel, like many PHP frameworks, processes input parameters in a way that can be exploited if not handled correctly.

In this blog, we’ll explore how HPP works, how it affects Laravel applications, and how to secure your web application with practical examples.
How HTTP Parameter Pollution Works
HPP occurs when an application receives multiple parameters with the same name in an HTTP request. Depending on how the backend processes them, unexpected behavior can occur.
Example of HTTP Request with HPP:
GET /search?category=electronics&category=books HTTP/1.1 Host: example.com
Different frameworks handle duplicate parameters differently:
PHP (Laravel): Takes the last occurrence (category=books) unless explicitly handled as an array.
Express.js (Node.js): Stores multiple values as an array.
ASP.NET: Might take the first occurrence (category=electronics).
If the application isn’t designed to handle duplicate parameters, attackers can manipulate input data, bypass security checks, or exploit business logic flaws.
Impact of HTTP Parameter Pollution on Laravel Apps
HPP vulnerabilities can lead to:
✅ Security Bypasses: Attackers can override security parameters, such as authentication tokens or access controls. ✅ Business Logic Manipulation: Altering shopping cart data, search filters, or API inputs. ✅ WAF Evasion: Some Web Application Firewalls (WAFs) may fail to detect malicious input when parameters are duplicated.
How Laravel Handles HTTP Parameters
Laravel processes query string parameters using the request() helper or Input facade. Consider this example:
use Illuminate\Http\Request; Route::get('/search', function (Request $request) { return $request->input('category'); });
If accessed via:
GET /search?category=electronics&category=books
Laravel would return only the last parameter, category=books, unless explicitly handled as an array.
Exploiting HPP in Laravel (Vulnerable Example)
Imagine a Laravel-based authentication system that verifies user roles via query parameters:
Route::get('/dashboard', function (Request $request) { if ($request->input('role') === 'admin') { return "Welcome, Admin!"; } else { return "Access Denied!"; } });
An attacker could manipulate the request like this:
GET /dashboard?role=user&role=admin
If Laravel processes only the last parameter, the attacker gains admin access.
Mitigating HTTP Parameter Pollution in Laravel
1. Validate Incoming Requests Properly
Laravel provides request validation that can enforce strict input handling:
use Illuminate\Http\Request; use Illuminate\Support\Facades\Validator; Route::get('/dashboard', function (Request $request) { $validator = Validator::make($request->all(), [ 'role' => 'required|string|in:user,admin' ]); if ($validator->fails()) { return "Invalid Role!"; } return $request->input('role') === 'admin' ? "Welcome, Admin!" : "Access Denied!"; });
2. Use Laravel’s Input Array Handling
Explicitly retrieve parameters as an array using:
$categories = request()->input('category', []);
Then process them safely:
Route::get('/search', function (Request $request) { $categories = $request->input('category', []); if (is_array($categories)) { return "Selected categories: " . implode(', ', $categories); } return "Invalid input!"; });
3. Encode Query Parameters Properly
Use Laravel’s built-in security functions such as:
e($request->input('category'));
or
htmlspecialchars($request->input('category'), ENT_QUOTES, 'UTF-8');
4. Use Middleware to Filter Requests
Create middleware to sanitize HTTP parameters:

🌟 New
Content Label and mature content visibility settings have now been consolidated into simpler single “Show mature content” and “Blur mature content” settings on the web and in the Android app (settings set on the web will be reflected in the iOS app.)
A new “Include posts from your communities” setting is now available in your Dashboard settings.
Communities you have muted will now appear dimmed in the sidebar on the web.
Community admins and moderators can now see all individual reports for each piece of reported content in their community.
We now support uploading videos in the AV1 format.
Two-factor Authentication via SMS is no longer available for anyone not already enrolled. If you are currently using SMS for Two-Factor Authentication, it will continue to work until disabled. Overall, we recommend switching to app-based authentication (if you have not already), which is supported by most password managers as well as dedicated apps.
🛠 Fixed
Embedded Instagram photos no longer have a play button.
Reporting a post to staff, via the moderation dialog in the mod queue, was broken. This is now fixed.
🚧 Ongoing
No ongoing incidents to speak of right now.
🌱 Upcoming
No upcoming launches to announce today.
