Neil shuddered from his spot on the couch. The rain was slapping against the windows as the wind whipped through the trees outside. A steady tap, tap, tap. Neil stared blankly at the wall; a small section of the white paint was chipping off of the wall. He and Andrew had tried to hang a picture there once, but the wall put up more of a fight than either of them had anticipated. 

It was drawing closer to 4 in the morning, but Neil couldn’t find it in himself to sleep. He knew a lot of people would have been lulled to sleep by the storm. He knew for a fact that Matt would be passed out in his bed right now; rain always brought a sense of peace to him. Neil wished he could feel that sense of peace right now. 

His eyes stayed open, a loud voice echoing in his head reminding him that loud noises meant people could sneak up easier. Sharp nails gripping his jaw and yanking harshly. You do not sleep during storms, Abram. They cover footsteps. If you can’t hear something as quiet as footfall, then we’re dead. You stay awake.

Another shiver runs down his spine as the room lights up briefly. Neil shook his head and tore his eyes away from the wall. His eyes caught on a shadow in the hallway, and Neil couldn’t help his visceral reaction. His body jerked sideways as his heart jumped into his throat. Andrew blinked bleary eyes at him as he shuffled his sock-clad feet closer to the coach. “Neil?” He took a moment to slow his rabbiting heart before answering in a croaky voice, “I’m fine.” 

Andrew rubbed his hand over his eye an unimpressed look on his face. “It’s four in the morning. Why are you in the living room?” Neil let his eyes sweep across the room as he gave himself a moment to sort his thoughts. He wouldn’t lie to Andrew, but the full answer felt too raw. “Don’t like storms.” Andrew’s eyes seemed to sharpen a bit as he woke up, and he studied Neil’s face for a moment. He tried his best not to squirm under Andrew's gaze, willing his body to still, and only then did he realize his hands were shaking.

Andrew must have decided it wasn’t the right time to push and instead sighed heavily before making it the rest of the way to the couch. He flopped down sluggishly, dragging the blanket lying over the back of the couch with him. He reached for the remote before lying down, his head hovering over Neil’s lap as if waiting for permission. “Yes,” Neil whispers softly. Andrew’s head settled gently on Neil’s thigh. He found himself settling back into the couch as well, the last bits of tension draining away. Andrew scrolled through different channels before coming across the Wizard of Oz and turning the volume down. 

They sat in comfortable silence for a while, the buzz of the old TV and the raging storm the only sounds that filled the room. Faint jingles made their way toward them as Sir and King trotted toward them. King meowed grumpily as he jumped onto the back of the couch to curl up. Neil watched as Sir climbed up after King, getting comfortable curled around the other cat. 

He hovered his hand over Andrew’s head, a silent yes or no. Andrew lifted his head to look at Neil’s hand before nodding and placing his head down once more. Neil let his hand drop the rest of the way and took a deep breath in. Andrew himself brought a sense of security, but that, combined with the soft glow of the TV and the purring by his head, had the voices in Neil’s head go quiet. 

His fingers slid smoothly through Andrew’s golden strands; his dull nails scratched against Andrew’s scalp. He felt more than saw Andrew’s shiver and smiled softly to himself. He let his head drop to the back of the couch as his eyes drifted closed.

When Neil left in the morning for his daily run, he made sure to leave a mug of hot chocolate on the table for Andrew. An unspoken thank you for being there for him when he was tired and unsure of what was going on. Neil knew that Andrew had his back, and he knew that he had Andrew’s, but it still sent a wave of shock through him every time he saw it in action. 

Putting his earbuds in, he slipped silently out of the apartment.

Day 3 Doggie Advent Calendar 🐶🗓️

I can find it in my heart to forgive botw. I liked botw for a long while but the flaws of Totk not only highlighted the flaws of botw, but also ruined a lot of bits of botw that I loved (the dragons for one). So I’ve been pretty sour about the game since the release of Totk, barely even engaging in that community and no longer even making botw art.

But without the context of Totk, botw is still a great game. Are there many things I’d want to change about it? Yes. Does it also lack strong storytelling even lacking really strong environmental storytelling? Yes. But at its core, it’s a game that respects the players and tried to shoot for the stars. The art and design is gorgeous and especially in a world of hyper realistic graphics, it’s a game that looked back on its predecessors to have a beautiful stylized environment and stand out from other triple a’s. There’s a reason the botw community was going strong for 6 years pre release of Totk.

I don’t think I’ll ever forgive Totk. Totk spits on the returning players and spits on its own characters. It’s a game that doesn’t respect its source material and acts like you’re crazy for ever caring about it. Totk charges you $70 USD for a game that has even worse storytelling than botw, even worse characterization, and so many storytelling flaws that act like you and all the characters in the game have terrible short term memory. The devs didn’t even have enough respect for the game to write the story themselves. It’s a lazy and greedy excuse of a game, if the devs wanted to make a sandbox game they should’ve just made a non canon game or dlc or even a non Zelda game. I am legitimately worried about the future of 2d Zelda with the way the devs have been talking, that’s how much trust I have lost in them.
