Do ya'll ever think about how there was a whole Mermaid Melody dub done for the U.S., like the whole season, ready to go whenever - but no one wanted to broadcast it or sell the toys so the whole deal fell through and all we have to show for it is this trailer?

I feel like Asuka in the ADV dub is so much funnier and more German than the Netflix dub. I don't remember being this entertained by her the first time, but it could also just be that I know her so much better now.

I'm having really mixed feelings about these different dubs. I'm going to have to try the Japanese one at some point now.

My Commentary: This small but significant sequence takes place not long after Koushiro is revealed to be a canon Adoptee. Mrs. Izumi is fully aware that Koushiro has accepted Mrs. Izumi (+Izumis both) as Koushiro's true parent{s}, however, we are not given indication that the other supporting characters were actually told about 'the secret' of Koushiro's. Shin's surprise, in that regard, can hardly be held too much against Shin - which Mrs. Izumi eventually quickly recognizes, dropping the argument and frustration - Shin was likely completely unaware how strongly Mrs. Izumi felt during these moments, while Mrs. Izumi was likely running on pure adrenaline responding!

Mrs. Izumi, in the original version, is also using a neutrally polite speech pattern that is overall appropriate when speaking to children; Koushiro, in the original, is also known for speaking throughout the entire series with a formal and polite pattern that is "unusual" for Koushiro's age, while it's more "typical" for Mrs. Izumi to use similar in this sequence.

Shin Kido, Jou's 2nd eldest sibling closer in age, the 2nd born of the three Kidos, is the sibling who appears throughout Adventure Episodes 35~39 and later Adventure-specific episodes (such as flashback sequence in Dark Masters arc) specifically. In the 2nd sequel series, "02", Jou's oldest sibling, Shuu, was introduced. The U. S. dub combined "Shin" and "Shuu" into "Jim", a singular character, but they were actually two separate siblings! (Thus, Jou is speaking to Shin as if Shin is the younger of the two siblings, addressing Shin commonly with a 'casual' "Nii-san", though in this scene, Jou sounds surprisingly more 'assured' and perhaps a slight bit 'full of' self, but is quickly grounded by Sora and Mimi not long after.)

A very belated update to info on the Sgt. Frog ADV dub: Picture disclosing more info about this thing from the January 2007 issue of Anime Insider! So far I've seen no documentation of this thing and I have just had this issue sitting around on a shelf without ever actually showing off this article.

The info listed is lackluster but a neat find regardless!

Like AU where Wendy tries to resurrect a dead Carla but they come back wrong.

The card was previewed alongside a new "Tamer" card for 02 movies character Wallace BT17-088, from the 02 movies "Hurricane Touchdown" and "The Golden Digimentals", two separate movies in the original Japanese version.

Notes/Trivia: "Antyla", from Antylamon, the U.S. dub name, is a misspelling of "Andira". "Andira" is one of the Twelve Heavenly Warriors of Buddhist Mythology (one of the major religions of Japan). {Wallace, meanwhile, is an American Chosen, implied to be connected to the U.S. group of Chosen (though once mainly acting solo + within the movies specifically), specifically from the region of (one based off of the real-world) Colorado. "Willis", Wallace's U.S. dub name was a misspelling of or taken from "Wallace" and intentionally modified, but it is also a real English "name" of English, Norman French, and Scottish origin, that seems more commonly used as a surname. It may be less commonly used as a first name, but it isn't necessarily "wrong" as an uncommonly used first name that originates from a surname. "Wallace", in comparison, is a common given name meaning 'Wales' or 'of Wales', but it is also used within England, Scotland, and the United Kingdom in general.

I know it's up to personal preference, and maybe it's cause I started out reading fan translations and fansubs. But I honestly prefer less scrubbing of Japanese artifacts in translations because that way I learn something. It takes me back to when I learned how honorifics worked in the first few manga I read

It very much depends on the setting of the story, but I usually agree. If the setting is in Japan, then I’m almost always on the side of keeping honorifics in. They’re too important to how relationships are expressed in Japan to exclude. Same with if a character calls another character by their family name rather than their given name. It really annoys me when that’s changed.

watching the Netflix dub is like. fucking Evangelion but remembered during a fever dream it’s so cursed. Uncanny valley ass Evangelion version it’s like a weird hazy memory.
