[CM] Birds - Fafya
More birds! This time we’re covering fafya, birds that aren’t considered a threat but aren’t hunted, either, for a variety of reasons. Below are translations for one hawk, some owls, and three miscellaneous species.
Cooper’s hawk (Accipiter cooperii) - Kee’ee Cat-sized hawk known for its skillful flight. Present year-round. They feed on birds and small mammals. They aren’t completely safe - they may attack cats who stray too close to a nest - but they generally leave the Clan alone.
Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) - Pyip* One of two birds with a name from base Clanmew! Big fish-eating raptors with a unique style of hunting. Present in summer and fall. They coexist peacefully with Clan cats, though they are a competitor for fish.
Barred owl (Strix varia) - Ooh’o’o Cat-sized owl with streaky markings, big black eyes, and a very distinctive call. Present year-round but most common in summer. Feed on numerous animals. Fun fact: barred owls have my favorite owl call! Listen to this fellow :]
Northern saw-whet owl (Aegolius acadicus) - Wopwop Small owl with big orange eyes. Fairly reclusive, more often heard than seen. Present year-round but most common in spring. Feed primarily on mice.
Belted kingfisher (Megaceryle alcyon) - Kiki Incredibly distinctive bird with a large head and long, pointed beak. Spotted often near rivers. Present year-round, most common in spring and late summer/fall. Feed on small fish and amphibians.
Common loon (Gavia immer) - Huroo’oo Black-and-white waterbird found exclusively on the lake; plumage is gray-and-white when not breeding. Their call is long and eerie, a hallmark of mornings near the water. Present year-round. Feed on fish.
Tree swallow (Tachycineta bicolor) - Shwiwi Little blue-and-white swallows well-loved for their acrobatics. Present in the summer. Feed on insects, which they chase mid-air!

If you want cute owls look up the subfamily of Strigidae called Surninae. It contains the genera Athene, Aegolius, Glaucidium, and a few smaller genera, and the owls tend to be so small and so round… Love them. Highlights include the collared owlet (glaucidium brodiei), the Eurasian pygmy owl (glaucidium passerinum), the ferruginous pygmy owl (glaucidium brasilianum), the elf owl (micrathene whitneyi) (this is the world’s smallest species of owl), the burrowing owl (athene cunicularia), the little owl (athene noctua), and the northern saw-whet owl (aegolius acadicus). They’re all delightful I promise.
