"I have him," Seike snarls where she's hunched over Thancred's lifeless body. "I have him."

It's unclear whether she means it as a warning or a prayer because Thancred is already long gone, a candle snuffed. His head lolls back onto her arm when she adjusts her grip, his features slack in a way that sends her gut roiling with primal fear.

I have him because surely she wasn't blessed with strength for something unseen to claim him from one second to the next.

I have him because he found her in the frostbitten wilderness and extended a hand.

I have him because she had to.

Kann-E-Senna rushes over — too slow, Seike bitterly thinks to herself — and extends her hands to do what Seike has already done, to confirm what was already evident and where the fuck are the healers?

"Don't touch him," Seike manages to grind out, pushing herself to her feet.

"Seike!" Y'shtola barks in admonishment.

She doesn't stop or look back as she starts towards the wing where she vaguely remembers private chambers being located, knowing the other Scions will be one step behind her.

Through her palms she keeps up a low but steady flow of healing aether even as she knows it won't work, that he is simply not there anymore and no amount of aether can mend a wound that doesn't exist.

Thancred's weight could rival a mountain's, so still is he, so heavy is his lack of response.

Promare. so not to be cringe and make this my number one, but i just. absolutely adore everything about promare: it's funny, the art style is really fun, JYB and Billie Kametz (rest in peace) are there. i think the way it makes very clear, and remains quite adamant, that it is a visual story first and foremost is really fun. I LOVE the opening section, i actually think from a storytelling perspective it's so fascinatingly well done. you can see how it was inspired by the F&F series, how sure, there's a ton of pyrotechnics and shit that's there just to look cool, but there is a genuine heart underneath it that's really sweet and propels the story every single time i watch it. galo and lio are also just. such great protagonists. i adore them both so so much, great watch, 10/10

Everything, Everywhere, All At Once. One of my favorite live action films, this movie really speaks to me. I adore multiverse travel and I've toyed around with the idea of being able to exist in many universes all at once for a story, but I honestly wasn't sure it could be done. Seeing it done on screen so beautifully, so masterfully, and so coherently was just. Mwah. the symbolism was beautiful, the characters were so funny, and the tale of intergenerational wounds (what we inflict on our children is often a different version of what was inflicted on us) is poignant and thoughtfully portrayed and just. yeah. from what i understand, michelle yeoh really took this film over the top with her performance and notes to the directors, and i love how collaborative the space was. here's hoping it gets the recognition it deserves.

Looper. This movie fucks. this movie is everything i want in a sci-fi thriller, because it has so much soul. the way the movie really puts to task the idea of the masculine hero. there's a scene in this movie that just lives with me forever, because it's a scene that feels like it would belong in a gritty realistic action film, and yet it is so so sad. there's no cool music, there isn't a good reason for what happens other than it's procedure, and it physically hurts to watch. on top of that emily blunt is there and i am in love with her.

Knives Out/Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. i'm putting them together not because they're the same film but because they scratch an itch of fun storytelling within a tried and true genre. i am so compelled by stories that have such eye for detail, and i've always been particularly interested in mystery stories. i also am obsessed with the camera technique they used for Knives Out. it's beautiful and i love it so so much.

The Truman Show. also a really really cool movie, i'm obsessed with the way this semi-predicted the sensationalization of people's lives, and the parasocial relationships we now have with people we feel like we "know". moreover, i rly rly like the commentary on art and the idea of caricaturing the self and how that ultimately makes the world around you a caricature, too.

The Adjustment Bureau. one of the first movies i ever really really loved, because i was super obsessed with the idea of trying to go against forces larger than you to be with the person you love (for some strange reason. who knows what that could be. 🌈) i got so interested in how this movie worked, i watched it over and over for years, until i could quote it by rote, and then i read the screenplay because i was desperate to know how it worked. i wouldn't say this is the best movie in the world; far from it. it has this beautiful, interesting premise, but it doesn't take any risks: david and elise are a straight cis white couple with no real barriers other than unforeseen hands saying that they can't. i think there's so much potential here, though, and it's the thing that i was so interested in for so so so long.

Your Name (Kimi no Namae Wa). not to be basic but this movie made me cry a lot. i'm such a sucker for body swap shenanigans in general, on top of time travel, but i rly rly rly liked the idea of two people connecting in spite of space and time and everything to do their damndest to save each other and everyone they loved. just because they cared. i always found that to be so powerful and meaningful.

The Invitation. this is a movie i have mixed feelings about because it was an interesting film and had a lot of really lovely motifs regarding grief, but it was also a film i watched with someone who is no longer in my life. but the music in it is really melancholic and beautiful, and i rly do think it's such a massively good take on how grief is powerful to eat up not just you, but everyone around you, too.

Gone Girl. brooooo this movie was so so so good, i loved it so much, although the first time i saw it i was not a fan because i was sixteen and i had to watch the cunnilingus scene with my dad right next to me. but the second time i watched it i was alone and also 22 and so it was rly good. i just love the bait and switch. i love the evil woman. i love everything about it. fantastic.

probably does not count but the Sense8 movie was bananas and cool and beautiful and i am so sad that show did not get the five seasons it deserved, it was a really, REALLY good idea. it fucked some stuff up, but this show was so queer and unapologetic about it, and i enjoyed just how much of the show was driven by love. i rly rly did.

it's definitely up to the execution and it can put me off a fic, though, since often find a lot of this particular kind of h/c to be really ooc, since i find that characters' personalities often end up getting sacrificed in favor of... very same-y comfort??? it's hard to explain, but a lot of sad characters i like are sad while also being assholes, so if i'm going to go for soft h/c i still want them to feel like themselves

44. sitting on the other’s lap

"Come," is what Thancred had said, patting his knees and looking entirely too earnest for a man who by the looks of it is teetering on the edge of too much drink. "Surely you don't mind?"

It had been the logical choice — with not enough chairs to go around and a staunch policy on Seike's end to never squeeze herself into a space she can't leave easily, perching on Thancred's lap had sounded like a good idea. It helped that she was familiar with the tavern and knew they wouldn't be bothered, an old family owned business as well as a familiar haunt for Vylbrandians.

Even if she didn't know all the staff she knew of most of them and while the atmosphere was rowdy, it was rowdy in a way that made it clear that no trouble would be welcomed. It was why they had chosen this place after all.

Here Seike and Thancred simply blended in with the rest of the crowd. The large bartender might be the only one who had a clue as to who they actually are; he kept their table stocked with drinks and snacks without saying a word, the only communication between him and Seike a stoic nod.

They were supposed to meet an informant but as time passed it got clear that they either spooked or got held up somewhere and wouldn't be coming around tonight — Seike was just about to tell Thancred they ought to leave when a bard appeared on the cramped stage to raucous cheers and applause.

Surely, staying for one song couldn't hurt.

She should have known better.

One song turns to two, turns to three until she's melted back against Thancred's broad chest, warm and content. The music is better than one can expect from an establishment like this and the anonymity is a breath of fresh air, adding to her reluctance to leave.

Not to mention Thancred.

Thancred who's drunkenly humming along low enough that only she can hear with his hands splayed over her thighs, drawing maddening little circles along the inner seam of her trousers. She's straddling his legs, flush against him — it's terrible.

Awful.

Maddening.

The shiver starts at the bottom of her body and travels up until she feels it prickling along her hairline, a languid lick of desire at her spine. It feels like she's afflicted with the heavy spell and Thancred is her current source of gravity.

"The bard isn't half-bad," Thancred murmurs, fingers tracing round and round and round. "Reckon he'll make a decent amount of coin tonight."

"Jealous?" She asks it only so she can feel the rumble of his laughter reverberate in her body, lolling her head back so Thancred can speak directly into her ear and she can feel his hot breath wash over her neck. Twelve and fuck above, he's doing things to her that she isn't entirely sure he's aware of.

No one's watching them, she tells herself. No one cares about the Hyur couple shoved onto a too-small couch by the kitchen exit, hidden by tankards and bottles.

"Are you telling me to get up on stage and leave you all alone here?"

Scratch that — he definitely knows.

"Hm. I don't want to lose the best seat in the house."

Again he laughs, suryp-sweet and golden, and she closes her eyes, imagines it rattling around in her ribcage.

"Is that so?"

Seike shifts her weight. He's so broad. Despite their size difference when standing up he makes her feel small like this, every inch of him a reminder of the strength he's fought to obtain. His thighs especially — they're thick and muscled, a plush pillow for her to sit on.

It's impossible to ignore the way she's splayed open over them, especially when he taps a foot to the beat of the music and the motion pushes his leg up and in between hers. It's a small motion but quite enough to drive her mad, to continually reset the state where she thinks she's gotten used to being in his lap like this.

"Thancred."

"Hm?"

"You only paid for one room, right?"

She doesn't need to see him to know that he's grinning as he presses a kiss between her shoulder blades.

Hey what’s this murderbot stuff you talk about all the time? It seems neat

It is The Murderbot Diaries, a series of sci-fi (mostly) novellas by Martha Wells! :D The protagonist is a "construct," a semi-organic robot/cyborg made of both mechanical parts and cloned human tissue; it specifically is a SecUnit, a type of construct designed for security work on the Corporation Rim, a part of space owned and operated entirely by mega-corporations that use people as serf/slave labor and thus need non-rebellious, pre-programmed security to run herd on them.

The theory is that SecUnits are simply equipment, and Corporation Rim dogma basically treats them as less people than humans (which it, frankly, also often treats as not-particularly-people unless powerful enough), and they're controlled by "governor modules" that punish them if they take any unapproved actions. The dominant narrative about constructs is that, without their governor modules, they'll run amok and murder people.

Murderbot a) is very much a person, though it has some trouble coping with that fact, b) disabled its governor module after its bad code made them run amok, c) has not in fact run amok murdering people since, and d) is in fact spending most of its time watching media while it continues to do its job. Literally all it wants in life, when we first meet it, is to be left alone to secretly watch TV inside its own head. #Relatable.

The series starts with Murderbot finding people willing to treat it as a person and starting to escape the role for which it's been designed and the cruelty of the Corporation Rim, and continues on into a lot of grappling with how to exist as an independent being, learning to form its own identity, dealing with people's expectations of it (whether hostile or well-meant), and so on. It makes friends! It learns and grows as a person! It deals with its issues, sort of, and learns that sometimes dealing with those issues means asking people to accommodate it and sometimes it means accommodating them and both are reasonable to do and expect.

The books are first-person POV, and Murderbot is a very snarky narrator; in part due to the mostly-novella format, each entry is very tightly plotted, flows very quickly, and is heavy on fast, fun action. The other characters and Murderbot's relationship with them are also wonderful, and I in particular enjoy seeing Murderbot gradually develop friendships, entirely unaware and/or in denial the whole time.

My mom bounced off the books initially but then fell in love with the audiobooks and thinks the narrative style works better that way, and the narrator for them is extremely good, so if that's a way you enjoy engaging with first-person POVs I will recommend that as well!
