“So many fears. Let’s make them all come…Wait.”

The glitch ghost paused its possession of the hapless Endrider, who lay sprawled out beside the flaming wreck of his former vehicle. Though difficult to parse, its rasping, staticky voice carried an air of disbelief.

“You’re afraid of - not - crashing?”

“I-It’s…it’s not…” the human stuttered, “not that. It’s not…making a mark.”

“Ah. Fear of dying unacknowledged. That, I can work with! Now. Where were we…?”

Resuming its evil sneer, the spirit leaned in close behind the man once more.

“Lay off him.”

The spirit lurched to the side, reeling from a blow.

“Who dares…Who was able to hit me!”

A second Endrider smirked, pulling her enchanted wrench back from its swing. Her motorcycle was fully intact, adorned with deadly spikes just like her leather jacket.

“I was, jerk,” grunted the bandit. “Leave him alone.”

The ghost shot forward. It froze face to face with the woman, grin spread impossibly wide.

“Would you rather I torment you, instead?”

“…Yeah. C’mon.”

One final time the ghost was surprised. It pulled back, and the Endrider did not attack again.

“Ah…saving your compatriot! How noble. And futile-”

“No, idiot. I want you to come with me and help me tear shit up. You wanna cause misery and suffering, right?”

“Sure.”

“My kinda crowd. Again, c’mon. Let’s ride…however you possess folks.”

“…Fine.”

The spirit floated towards the Endrider, moving to linger over her with a surprising amount of hesitation. She grinned in response, mounting her bike before rocketing down the road once more.

“What’s the problem!” shouted the rider, over the roaring wind. “Thought this was what ya wanted!”

“On my terms…”

“Don’t care…Hey, just a heads-up! If you’re expecting a long-term residence, you’re gonna be disappointed!”

Before the spirit could ask for more details, its eyes widened as it spotted the massive pack of vehicles vying for position further down the track. And the Endrider was on a direct crash course for them.

Maro’s Aetherdrift Teaser

Before previews for Aetherdrift officially begin, I thought it would be fun to do another of my Duelist-style teasers where I give tiny hints of things to come. Note that I’m only giving you partial information. 

First up, here are some things you can expect: 

• 13/13 Vehicle with Crew 2 that costs one mana to cast

• Mechanic called Start your engines!

• Three planeswalker native to one of the worlds visited, and one non-native, gets a desparked legendary creature version

• Cycle of vanilla legendary creatures

• Cat and Dog Mounts

• An old God returns and new Gods are introduced

• New Lotus

• Cycle of multicolored Gearhulks

• Numerous mechanics from the worlds visited get cameos

• New Vehicle artifact token

Next, here are some rules text that will be showing up on cards:  

• “This creature saddles Mounts and crews Vehicles using its toughness rather than its power.”

• “Whenever you draw a card, each opponent mills two cards.”

• “Other Dinosaurs you control get +1/+1.”

• “Whenever a player casts a spell they don’t own,”

• “{T}: Add {R} for each Goblin you control.”

• “During turns other than yours, this Vehicle is an artifact creature.”

• “Whenever you activate an exhaust ability, draw a card.”

• “Put any number of permanent cards from your hand onto the battlefield.”

• “Whenever you attack, if a Pirate and a Vehicle attacked this combat,”

• “Creatures you control have base power and toughness 6/6 and are Oozes in addition to their other types.”

I wanted to wait until all the Muraganda legendaries were previewed so I could admire them all in one post, and I'm not disappointed in the least!!

I love the glimpses at Muraganda's worldbuilding we get through these paragraphs of flavor text, from the politics of the sapient civilizations to the geography, biology, and even ancient history of Muraganda's land. I can't wait to visit this plane again, hopefully on its own, and dig into all that these legendaries hint at.

Can I talk about how happy Nissa looks here? Look at her! I don’t think she’s ever been portrayed as happier in official art before. Even when she’s happy, the artists usually just give a her a content smile, like in Attune with Aether and Nissa, Resurgent Animist:

But now! Nissa is finally, ecstatically happy! This is a great marriage of both art and story, as K. Arsenault Rivera’s Aetherdrift stories also show this. And for a brutal, one-two punch, look at the flavor text for this newest card:

Valgavoth Kart

Part of why the Harrower of Souls was first bound to The House of Horror was because he was even more terrifying on the roads.

At first I made this because Valgavoth going karting sounded like a silly sketch idea, but now a Magic the Gathering go-kart racing game unironically sounds like it would be fun.

With the printing of Transit Mage in Aetherdrift, we now have a complete cycle! Trinket Mage searches for mana value 1 or less, Treasure Mage searches for 6 or more, and Tribute, Trophy, and Transit anything in between!
