✦ ・ANONYMOUS HAS VISITED THE INFORMATION DESK › i think a collective starting with maybe 10~ writers would be good so that there are a variety of characters but everyone can interact easily since there aren't too many people it may get overwhelming trying to build connections

ten was actually my initial thinking as well, so i think i'll go with that! thank you for the feedback! i agree that sometimes having too many muns can become overwhelming & hard to plot, so this seems like the perfect solution. in the future, we can even discuss expanding by a couple spots if we want, but i for sure don't want to go over twenty muns!

no , they don't need to have a secret at all ! that would be completely up to you on whether or not they're actually hiding something .

Hello!! I was wondering if you have any book recommendations for Appalachian folk magic? Especially for a beginner, I’m familiar with our local “old wive’s tales” but I’d love to learn more!!
Hello there! I have answered this question before but I have some new resources so I'll list them here! It really depends on which part of Appalachia you are looking at! And if you want to dig deeper the ancestral roots of the family you are looking at. For example my family has a lot of Welsh and British influence because that was our family source so a lot of those beliefs lingered and changed throughout the years!
Someone from Pennsylvania would likely have a lot more German roots for their practice. But despite the root differences for the folklore these practices stem from they do still share a lot of connecting points! But having babbled all of that here are my favorite books on AFM specifically. (Mind you Christianity takes a super huge part in the practice so a lot of bible and doing things in threes for the Trinity is involved!)
Authors to check out:
H. Byron Ballard- A pagan who also practices AFM, from the NC side of Appalachia, a lot of people hate her writing style which is a bit ramble-y. I also dislike the term she uses for her own practice but that is a super simple and small complaint honestly. I own all of her books on the subject, which should say something.
Jake Richards - From Eastern TN like me! A lot of what he talks about are things I have seen before, and he breaks down complex concepts like burn blowing into something relatively easily understood. HOWEVER HAVING SAID THAT the author is partially Melungeon, so he does have some Hoodoo mixed in from his grandmother's side iirc? He does label these things in his works and explains that they are not for everyone which I do appreciate.
Rebecca Beyer - While vaguely Wiccan toned, which I attribute to her publishers/raising, she's a transplant to Appalachia and if you're looking for herbal information on Appalachia and to wax poetic about how even with a ton of people settling there SO MUCH of the natural herbs and plantlife still survive, read her work! Her work on foraging safely and environmentally is so SOOOOO good.
Brandon Weston - For Ozark Mountain range/German/Dutch Appalachian work! He has written quite a few books on the subject and all of them are a treat!
Roger J. Horne - For how to dig into folklore and apply it to your own practice! This author is pagan and does blend in some traditional work with the Appalachian but I do enjoy his work and how he applies folklore. This author is also FROM Appalachia which is nice to see.
INDIVIDUAL BOOKS TO READ: Appalachian Folk Healing by Jake Richards - A republication of a very old book on remedies and 'spells', while kitschy and stupidly worded, after all it was a popular book created just for sales reasons, some of these remedies are things I remember having done to me! Good for both a giggle and actual information. TW for mentions of animal parts, hunting, illnesses, the G slur, period specific phobias and racism.
Albertus Magnus - These books all supposedly written by an ancient guy, were actually mildly common on traveling salesmen's trucks and wagons. So as a result a lot of people in Appalachia had access. Like the book above it is very stupidly worded and definitely of their time. Same TW as above.
Pow-Wows or Long Lost Friend - Another Pennsylvania Dutch book! Very good and very clear.
Southern Folk Medicine - A book that breaks down a lot of common medicinal beliefs in the South which does include Appalachia! Sadly not just Appalachia but a very good book regardless. THIS BOOK MADE ME UNDERSTAND THE THEORY BEHIND BLOOD ISSUES MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE EVER HAS.
Moon Eyed People - A collection of Welsh folktales that brewed within Appalachia from Welsh immigrants. Very good book imo!
Granny Buck's Dibs and Dabs - This book is so worth the price tag! One of the more expensive books in my collection, but I'm fine with that. Granny Buck covers a lot of topics and I can feel the accent through the wording!
Signs, Cures, & Witchery - More German Appalachian stuff! This book and it's interviewees are from the Kentucky side of the mountains!
Witches, Ghost, and Signs - This book is based more in the Southern Appalachian area! Georgia, SC, NC, and TN specifically! Lots of folklore here, but does mention some not so great bits of the lore, but that is expected.
The Foxfire Books - What began as a school project exploded into a collection of true to life stories and idioms from Georgia elders within the mountains. SO SO GOOD OKAY? For everything. How to plant, hunt, make musical instruments, anything from the mountains? They cover.

Question: So, if Miguel knows spider!reader in Arachnophilia, and spider!mig is mentioned in AFM, does reader know her own spider variant (personally or from Miguel/other spiders mentioning them) ??
I love both stories, and obvi the idea of Miguel & Reader being tied in several universes, but I was just curious on the idea of reader knowing.
oh im SO GLAD I get to talk about this THANK YOU SM cos its been on my mind for days!! I will use this chance to actually drop the dante fic cinematic universe timeline, which is: easing tensions - arachnophilia - a fortunate mistake - a fortunate mistake II There's certain things I gotta keep vague because I know how arachnophilia ends (and how it might tie into AFM II) and I don't want to spoil, but I'll talk about a bit because I'm rabid rn.
I wanna add for the sake of my lore on multiverse stuff, Miguel's who are turned into Spider-men are quite rare? I think this gets mentioned in AFM but Miguel's in general are rare, Spider Miguel's even more so. I took him saying Gabi's universe was the one where he was happy to heart, along with the fact we see zero variants of him in the society. That shit was always the most interesting thing to flesh out. I also don't know if I've ever talked about nena's multiverse story properly either, but its pretty tragic. She largely only exists in universes where Miguels' exist, and in all the ones where she comes into contact with him she dies. Our Miguel's universe is the only one where she doesn't, and Miguel blames this inititally on his canon but, as we know, canon isn't real, in reality it's because our Miguel was the only one with multi-verse experiences that humbled his apathy and violent tendencies. It's sort of like how meeting Miles put Peter B. on a better course, Peter's influence on Miguel is something no other Miguel had and it changed him in a way that made him capable of growing. Vig is the only other one we've met and it's obviously implied he was a poor partner who became a good dad after nena's death. Nena is like, universal collatoral damage, and it's only in the universe where she wasn't 'meant' to love him that she got to be loved. It's fucked up and she deserved better fr.
BUT I will say, to actually answer the question (sorry lol) the reader in arachnophilia is actually not a variant of the reader from AFM. I am sticking with the rule that AFM reader is never a spider, because its important later hehe.
BUT! But this makes Spider!Mig and readers relationship equally interesting to me anyway. I am a sucker for starcrossed lovers, excellent trope, and while it was meant to be a one-off I wanna use it to explore the idea of fully abandoning ones canon and exploring a relationship beyond the bounds of ones universe. I will be going more into Spider!Migs backstory for this, but I think the films never properly addressed the potential dangers/tragedy of love between people from different universes. I used it a bit with OG Miguel with my explanation for what happened with Gabi, E.g him trying to combine their universes, but this is especially spicy. So, again, actual question (I'm so sorry I swear this is all I think about, rip my PhD) as of AFM II reader also doesn't know about Miguel's variants beyond Vig, YET. Miguel is aware of Spider!Mig and reader as of AFM, and if you go back you can see a lot of his mindset in there, especially when he talks about not wanting kids because of his genetic mess and feeling like he's too dangerous.
Miguel as a character is great, I can't say that enough, he's harboring so much self loathing and unaddressed trauma that while he wants to do the right thing he imposes very strict rules that always end in hypocricy. In the same way I think he's awful to Miles because he see's Miles making the same mistake he did (e.g destroying the universe for a loved one) and a lot of his violence is like, imposed, he's awful to his variants because he knows he's fucked up his own moral compass and takes it out on them.
But yes Miguel knows where they are, he has not told reader though, but I do want to have them cross paths.

how do you feel about people who aren't from the appalachian mountains trying to practice appalachian folk magic?
A tricky question to start off with, I like it! This answer may be a bit ramble-y, and I apologize! Some aspects of AFM are perfectly okay to be practiced anywhere! The concepts, the bible verses, the odd methods of protection and healing...some of the spirits. The only thing I can think of to stop some people is that some ingredients, some items, some spirits or haints to protect from are hard to find outside of Appalachia! Otherwise, as long as you have your heart in the right place, you study up on the region and the history? I say go for it, we need more practioners. Because the old folk? They won't be around forever. But in saying this: I know my opinion isn't everyone's. I know some people who would rage at me, hell, I've been banned from certain groups for saying that I am okay with people learning. If someone refuses to teach you? Honor that, anger-inducing it may feel. The reason some people fight so hard to keep AFM within the mountains is because well...look at us historically. Historically speaking...when outsiders came in? Hell followed. Years of near slave-labor to mining companies, the drug epidemic, crushing our old ways of life and making a good chunk of them illegal? Destroying our land for profit, kicking people off of their land to "preserve" it? Purposefully making us a butt of a joke into some...stupid, inbred, ruthless, drunkard of a people just because we paid less tax on whiskey when we made it ourselves? I could go on and on.

Hiiii, imma be honest Arachnophilia was interesting to me! But i have a question and is for curiousity. (Sorry for my english i am hispanic so lol)
If Mig and reader are going to have offspring, like 10 daughters and 1 son i saw you said answering a question, by laying eggs. How reader would feed them? Is so many kids! Unless the drider daughters eats like idk small preys? and the humanoid son drinks the mother's milk? Sorry if i sound very weird. But is just i am curious and well i try learn about logic of a family of a drider dad and a human (spider) mom
Hey! Totally valid, please don't worry about asking questions they make v happy, I love getting the chance to lore dump!! So you're totally right it sounds messy, it would kinda have to be, they are like... basically creating a new species lol. I went through this w AFM with OG!Miguel's genes causing some havoc so weird baby lore is a favourite of mine. First thing I'll elaborate on though: the 10 daughters and son would not be all born at the same time! I would not put reader through that absolute hellscape of a timeline! Now this isn't exact, I wasn't sure how interested people would be in a family arc so I haven't fleshed it out in the same way I have his backstory or their relationship progression, but here's a little more info on my initial theories. They have handfuls of eggs at a time (cos spiders, that's like a v classic spider thing but also probably for the best cos tryna give live birth to something w tiny frail legs? oh god no please) but only a couple of the eggs end up being viable and hatching, so they have usually have 2 or 3 babies at a time to raise.
(edit because i had a thought: i did wonder about them having a few kids who are just straight up large spiders?? who are still affectionate with the family but are just. spiders. love the idea of them being v protective of reader and they cuddle all the time.)
Since even the driders have a human top half they'd all start feeding like regular babies, either formula or milk (I imagine reader could stock up on some, or Mig would just rampage through the local city to steal some) and they grow very rapidly at the start to kinda catch up! So its do-able, just a little more difficult than usual. I did also think about them maybe needing to be in an incubator early on since they would be smaller? I could see Mig putting his old skills to use to build one. Hope that explains it better!
