Before leaving to the North of Ghana, just a relaxed evening at Abajo‘s at Accras Art Center with live music and dancing. Well, to be honest there will be a lot of dancing and drumming in the North, but there cannot be enough 😉 Amazing musicians that night!!! Just look at the guitar made out of an old oil bottles. (The sound is great!) But also look at the joy of the drummer (2nd video). It is just impossible to stay on your seat when someone is drumming with so much passion. So in the end we all went crazy and the crowd gave the artists a shower of money. A touching and fascinating obituary of Ali Farka Touré, who died in 2006.
Some quotes:
He told me that he played African music, not blues, and that "this music has been taken from here. I play traditional music and I don't know what blues is. For me, blues is a type of soap powder."
Proof that we can assume too much about foreign styles and cultures. In fact, West African music is distinct from the blues associated with African-American culture (which itself has considerable European influence).
He toured the world and won his first Grammy for his 1994 collaboration with Ry Cooder, Talking Timbuktu, then retreated to his home town of Niafunke, on the banks of the Niger river in north-west Mali, where he devoted his time to farming and his role as the local mayor, spending the money he earned from his albums on irrigation and development schemes that transformed the region, making it self-sufficient for food.
This speaks for itself.
His album, In the Heart of the Moon, recorded with the world's leading kora player Toumani Diabate, was an exquisite selection of gently virtuoso duets, and last June the duo played together at the Barbican in London. It was already clear that Toure was seriously ill, but he went ahead with the concert and a recording for BBC Newsnight despite being in considerable pain.
Touré had battled with bone cancer for several years. A heartbreaking example of how artists can put everything aside in order to deliver.
He was, said Gold, a man who for much of his life "found things easy", and had the confidence to succeed at almost anything he attempted, although he never went to school and could neither read nor write.
Nick Gold, from World Circuit Label. I was at first astonished to read that Farka Touré could not read or write. But that isn’t surprising, given his upbringing. As the only child of 10 to survive past infancy (all 9 of his elder brothers died), with a father who died in World War II fighting for the French, and in a small Malian village, Touré would have had no choice but to find work immediately. He performed a variety of jobs before being hired on Radio Mali. We must continue to promote early education across the world, to ensure that children have better opportunities in life.
He had by then returned home, having given up his job at the radio station, and was startled to learn he was a cult hero in Britain.
Implies a great modesty.
In 1999 he released the Niafunke album, recorded in his home town at a time when it seemed that farming had become more important to him than music, and he might never be seen on stage again.
His change of heart, and recent flurry of musical activity, was caused by his concern that young Malians did not know enough about their country's music, or the songs of the griots, the hereditary musicians.
A reminder that people should not forget their cultural heritage. It takes centuries to develop a culture, a nation, and a people, and sadly little time to destroy both. The hideous crimes of Islamists in Mali, destroying tombs of Muslim saints and whipping people for playing music is a shocking testament to iconoclasm and its often irreversible effects. The music of Farka Touré can revive the Malian musical tradition, spanning centuries, and affirm the history of this country.
Well worth reading!
