#Repost @afrolatinotravel (@get_repost) ・・・ October 21st marks Panama’s “Festival del Cristo Negro,” the festival of the “Black Christ,” is an important religious holiday. It honors a Black, life-sized wooden statue of Jesus, “Cristo Negro” – also known as “El Nazaraeno,” or “The Nazarene.” . . Throughout the year, pilgrims come to pay homage to this statue of Christ carrying a cross, in its permanent home in Iglesia de San Felipe, a Roman Catholic parish church located in Portobelo, a city along the Caribbean coast of Panama, in the predominant Black province of Colón. . . On Oct. 21 each year, as many as 60,000 pilgrims from Portobelo and beyond travel for the festival, in which 80 men with shaved heads carry the Black Christ statue on a large float through the streets of the city. . . The men use a common Spanish style for solemn parades – three steps forward and two steps backward – as they move through the city streets. The night continues with music, drinking and dancing. . . El CristoNegro was a celebrated entity for Black Puerto Rican diner Ismael Rivera among other salseros. We learn about this and more on our 500 Years of Blackness Panama trip January 16-21, 2020. S/O to @afrolatinotravel for this unique #tambour experience. Santeria/Yoruba culture is very much a part of the Cuban culture I witnessed. I believe this dance is in tribute to a warrior Orisha named "Ochosi." They opened up their home, they sang, they drummed, they danced and were so open to answering questions about the religion. #AfroCubanCulture #AfroLatinoTravel #ThanksDashAndJavi #Cuba (at Cerro, Havana)

#Repost @afrolatinotravel (@get_repost) ・・・ Still from @diasporadash ‘s NEGRO: A docu-series About Latino Identity. NOTE: This is a still from my documentary series NEGRO: A docu-series about Latino Identity http://ift.tt/2hGgLQv The last post by @miss_rizos is especially important because Afrodescendant women are among the most violated, abused and unprotected. From street harassment, sexual assault, abuse (mentally, physically, psychologically, economically) intimate partner violence, workplace harassment, and deaths at the hands of partners and strangers alike, it is important that any decolonial work is intersectional and takes gender, class, color and socio-economic background, just to name a few, into account. #latinamerica #negritud #afrolatinx #afrolatinotravel http://ift.tt/2A7PSLX Follow #ADPhD on IG: @afrxdiasporaphd

#Repost @afrolatinotravel (@get_repost) ・・・ @nnekaj captured this viandero in Havana. Agriculture is especially unstable in Cuba as the “campo” is susceptible to hurricanes. After the most recent hurricanes, the shaky food system suffered even more shortages, eggs were scarce and the already limited variety of fruits and vegetables were devastated. A typical Cuban meal is not the Cuban-Americanized “ropa vieja,” as beef is very expensive for the average Cuban...but instead whatever food that is available “lo que hay.” If vianda (root vegetables) and the money to purchase vianda is there, that is what the day’s meal will be. Cubans joke that the “typical” Cuban meal is “arroz con huevo.” Eggs are called “salvavidas” the lifesavers that supply protein in a country where most people cannot afford to eat meat. Many produce sellers make their way from the Oriente to Havana to sell food amid the permanent scarcity. #cuba #havana #afrolatinotravel http://ift.tt/2Bgubec Follow #ADPhD on IG: @afrxdiasporaphd

#Repost @afrolatinotravel with @repostapp ・・・ Walking through Portobelo, home of El Nazareno, El CristoNegro, The Black Christ. Every October a pilgrimage is made by his followers. They come on their hands and knees, whip themselves, pouring hot wax on their backs for miles. When we speak about Babaluaye or San Lazaro, on our tours, we talk of how the pilgrimages to his rincon every December 17th in Havana also elicits this intensity. We think of the parallels and intersections in "New World" Afrodescendant spiritualities. Just as the Orisha, Babaluaye, El CristoNegro's color is royal purple and he too has protected and protects his devotees from infectious diseases, he protected Portobelo from a cholera outbreak that ravished Panama but did not touch Portobelo. 📸 @1stclassfrance #DiasporaStrong #mipanama #PTY #Panama #Portobelo #AfroPanama #afrolatinotravel #elnazareno #elcristonegro #blackchrist http://ift.tt/2rwtnfq Follow #ADPhD on IG: @afrxdiasporaphd
