This cargo ship from 1909 is starting to make zero-emissions deliveries again
Sailcargo doesn’t expect to replace the massive industry. But as companies look for ways to reduce emissions, it can offer a solution that works now. Because it doesn’t use shipping containers—goods are loaded on pallets—it also has some logistical advantages. “Some of these fast vessels have to wait at port often up to two weeks, because they’re dependent on the port infrastructure,” says Doggett. “They need the big crane to unload the container. We do not—we can unload ourselves.”

Doggett, who started sailing on tall ships as a 13-year-old, started thinking about the potential to revive traditional cargo shipping more than a decade ago. In 2014, she and two partners launched the company and later began working on building a traditional vessel from scratch. While traveling, Doggett had also run across the Vega. The ship, built in 1909, had been retired in the 1960s, as fossil-fueled container ships started to dominate trade routes. It was headed for the scrapyard when a family of Swedish shipbuilders rescued it and spent years restoring it; Doggett, who loved the design, stayed in touch with them and eventually made a deal to buy it.

What is Sextant?
In the past, people would hold a sextant in their hands to determine the angle that the horizon formed with respect to the sun, moon, or stars. Prior to the development of contemporary navigation systems such as GPS, it was a crucial instrument for ships to determine their latitude and chart their voyage over the seas.
An eyepiece, horizon glass, and a moveable arm make up the sextant. The user would use the movable arm to align the image of the celestial object with the horizon after sighting it through the horizon glass. The instrument's scale may then be used to read the object's angle with respect to the horizon.
With this angle measured and the time in hand, navigators could use celestial navigation methods and tables provided in books to determine their latitude. Even in the middle of the enormous oceans, before satellite navigation became accessible, sextants allowed sailors to precisely map their position and route by measuring the ship's speed and direction.
Although sextants are no longer used for marine navigation, they are still employed for some specialized tasks such as surveying, astronomy, and training in celestial navigation. During the Age of Sail and Discovery, they allowed for precise transoceanic sailing and exploration, which is a significant historical accomplishment.

“The Death of John Colman”
414 Years Ago, Today - (Sunday) September 6th, 1609, Sandy Hook Bay & New York Harbor:
Famed and intrepid explorer Henry Hudson arrived with his ship, the “Half Moon,” arrived off what is now New York several days earlier. Several of his men are out in one of the ship’s boats, exploring the deep waters that we now know as Sandy Hook Bay and the Lower Harbor.
For reasons that will never be known, two canoes full of Lenape Indians arrive, and unleash a hail of arrows upon the sailors. One of them finds its mark, going through the throat of the Half Moon’s 2nd Mate, a man named John Colman. He falls dead into the bottom of the boat as the men furiously row back to the safety of the Half Moon.
The place of his burial – “on the beach” has been lost to history, and there are several candidates as to the location. However, the most plausible location was a spit of sand that was jutting out into these deep waters, adjacent to the Half Moon’s anchorage. It was thus named “Colman’s Point” in his honor. In turn, as the Dutch continued to expand their influence in the area, that spit would come to be known as “Sant Hoek.” We know it today… as Sandy Hook.
Today, we remember John Colman, and warmly reflect on the fact that our beloved Sandy Hook has been intertwined with our nation’s history, literally, since Day One.
And that's pretty awesome.

Some shots of an amazing old anchor that was recently dredged up in a squid net off the coast of San Pedro! . . This amazing find is what's know as a 'Trotman Anchor' from the 19th century! Definitely either a leftover from the age of sail, or perhaps it was mounted to an old steamship and used for 'Kedging' while close to shore? A mystery of the sea now a cool dockside photo op! . . . #sanpedro #maritime #fishing #bigcatch #fishstory #anchor #antique #marine #relic #artifact #ageofsail #sailship #sunken #ship #Storied #treasures #storiedtreasures88 (at San Pedro, Calif.) https://www.instagram.com/p/CoD-pzmrQ2R/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

EDWARD JOHN SMITH: SEAMAN OR SULTAN?
By the time that he left the Olympic to assume command of her younger sister, the Titanic, Edward John Smith was already idolised by generations of passengers and crewmen alike. His reputation, both as a sailor and a supremely skilled social scion, was stratospheric.
Like most seamen of his generation, Smith started out in the age of sail, when most ships were still at the mercy of the whims of wind and wave. They spent as much time in oilskins as the rest of the crew. They felt- quite literally- the banshee's breath of an icy breeze and the sting of spray alike.
This gave them a keen appreciation of the awesome forces of nature, which they regarded with a wary sense of reverence. They were all too keenly aware that the natural elements could snuff out their lives as easily as a candle.
The steamship changed all that. Suddenly unshackled from dependence on the elements, these ships could now maintain a reasonably reliable schedule whatever the weather.
Bridges now rose many levels above those decks of old. They became enclosed, heated, and hushed as cathedrals. Ivy towers that engendered a level of detachment from the elements; a kind of dangerous disconnect that fostered an air of self satisfied, faux security.
Over years of mostly safe, uneventful sailings, this feeling of omnipotence, of hegemony over the once all powerful forces of nature, spread like some kind of sleeping sickness.
And even men as suave and savvy as Edward John Smith bought into this over time. It crowded into every corner of his consciousness to form the new, fatally flawed framework of his reasoning.
One cold, dark April night, it all fell down in around thirty-seven tremendous, spine chilling seconds...

Storm at Sea Dream, 2022.
https://www.redbubble.com/shop/ap/109657280
Based on Storm at Sea by Captain Thomas Hastings (1778 1854) The original is based on the Storm in 1804 that Sunk The Prince of Wales between Madagascar and The Cape of Good Hope.
This one came out quite surreal.
Note there were 4 Ships with the name Prince of Wales that Sunk in 1804. It was an East Indiaman.
