The new demands of my position are both a gift and a curse as I’m required to expand my knowledge base and think as a leader. There’s an element of freedom that I've been robbed of in this new position. There’s no time for fresh ideas and innovation in the same way there's no freedom to make mistakes. There’s no one to ask to review the work I have - I'm the final step in the pecking order before the other’s at my level look and ultimately Richmond’s eyes scan over it. I’d be lying if I said the thought doesn’t unnerve me. Dissatisfaction on his face and the scolding that will undoubtedly follow is a nagging inevitability. I’ve sat through so many briefings that I miss doing the work. This week has been an overwhelming barrage of discourse, planning and preparation. We’ve gone over logistics and transportation which is my specialty. Monaco is a logistical and transportation nightmare but I’ve taken all the necessary notes to make sure everything goes off without a hitch. Which includes sending one of my best agents there in person to scope out the scene and get the necessary measurements and blueprints. It’s my first major assignment and with my budget sky’s the limit. Consulting for the organization responsible for the formula one race's security is not something I ever considered in the realm of possibility; so I make the most of it. I add to my list of tasks and lock the documents before going over my new operating budgets. I still have money to spend but until my best guy is back I can’t be sure where the resources will be best allocated. I’m researching local charities in the area when Richmond appears in the doorway. It’s his first time stopping by all week and I can’t say I’ve missed the light eyed giant. 

“Sir” I stand.

“Cole, I’ve received preliminary drafts from all the other teams. Is there something you require assistance with?” He asks, leaning in the doorway. He’s in a white knitted sweater today looking too casual for a man like him. 

“I thought we had another week” I respond, disregarding how his arms fill out the otherwise cuddly, cozy ensemble, transforming it into something different altogether.

“I like to look over things by the project’s midpoint,” he explains, folding his arms.

“Well, I’m new and I didn’t know that” I swallow daring to meet his eyes.

“We can go over what you have for now,” Richmond says entering my office. I straighten, hating his presence and proximity. With Richmond it isn't walking on eggshells, it's like walking on glass barefoot. I stand walking over to the table and pressing the projector button. I unencrypted my files and show him what I’ve been working on. He watches attentively, his eyes scanning through the details projected in front of him.

“They’re color coded by threat level” he says perceptively interpreting the markings I have on the 3D map model of the area the races will take place in. 

“Yeah, it determines what will work in terms of an emergency exits.” I state, explaining my process.

“So you don’t only look at routes?” He asks.

“No, when I develop my plans I consider routes, danger, closures, alternate routes and transportation that is as discreet as possible while being resilient and agile” I explain and he nods zooming in on my tablet.

“You’re looking for places to land helicopters? Possible counter sniper positions.” He says interpreting my work in seconds. Impressive isn’t the word. Nothing is explicitly stated there’s just circles, dots, x’s and stars in a variety of colours.

“Yeah” I nod and he looks from the tablet back to me, with a ghost of a smirk on his lips, only for it to be gone as soon as it appears.

“You’re doing Jameson work for him.” He comments.

“I understand why our teams are separate but I think all aspects should inform each other” I swallow and his expression hardens.

“That’s not your job. It’s to take direction. No one should be fully informed of the other's actions in case of leaks. Your team needs to be agile. Keep your work to yourself” he orders going back to his military facade.

“With all the testing you still don’t trust us?” I ask and he scowls. His jaw sets before clicking as he clenches  it. 

“It’s not about trust. It’s about what a person gives away during torture. How can I protect my team from that? The rules are in place for a reason. Adhere to them” he orders again but his eyes are more sensitive. If I were a psychiatrist I could diagnose his paranoia and mood swings but as a civilian I table my judgement.

“The non patronizing way to say that is;  follow protocol Cole” I quip before he gets carried away and it ends poorly.

“I don’t care if you don’t like my delivery. At least you’ll be alive not to like it” he comments standing. I can't help the sharp look I send his way. If he were anyone else I wouldn’t put up with it. “Good work” he says finally but somehow the praise falls flat.

“Have you lost a lot of people?” I ask and the tension in his shoulders answers the question in an instant. His expression sobers. 

“I’ve seen a lot of death,” he nods. I look him over before nodding. It at least explains his incessant over preparation and commitment to structure, secrecy and preventative measures.

“I’m sorry,” seems the only appropriate response.

“You won’t have to be if you follow protocol. Your safety equipment needs to be fitted before we go wheels up, go see Cassandra. I’m scheduling you for some extra hand to hand” he says adding more to my plate.

“I don’t have time for extra hand to hand, I’m behind” I tell him pointing to the projections.

“No you’re not” he swallows. “You’ll fry your brain if you continue staring at blueprints. Movement will serve you more than sitting at your desk” he says parroting what I’ve heard from Jameson. I wonder if it's advice Jameson has commandeered from the Boss.

“Okay” I concede. RIchmond seems surprised by my concession but he nods, slipping his hands into the pockets of his trousers. Cassandra appears in the doorway and I let out a relieved breath.

“I hope you’re being nice.” she says, looking him over. Richmond doesn’t dignify her with a response. “Are you finished or can I steal Cole - her safety second skins are in” Cassandra says.

“We’re done and I have ten minutes” he says looking at his watch. I go along with them walking to his office suite instead of asking questions. Two suits wait in a box in his conference room. One is my perfect nude shade, it nearly looks like mesh but it's made of something stronger. It’s fully opaque and when I hold it up I frown wondering what in the T’Challa Black Panther, Richmond has paid for me to wear.

I raise a brow. “What’s this for?” 

“Protection, no burns, cuts or bullets can pierce it. A safety precaution” Cassandra responds.

“Try it on,” Richmond says, stepping out of the room.

“Please!” Cassandra scowls at him as she closes the door. I hold it up again and wonder what else money can buy. I head into the ensuite and I undress quickly. I step into the unitard that fits almost like a second skin. I manage the nearly invisible zipper at my side and look in the mirror. I look remarkably naked and tense up when I see shaded contouring that could pass for real hips and ass.

“Need help?” I hear Cassandra ask from outside.

“Uhh?” I respond and she giggles.

“That’s exactly how I felt - can we come in?” she asks.

“I guess” I responded, not quite sure. I remind myself I’m not naked as I leave the bathroom and re-enter the conference room as they come in. Cassandra’s eyes scan me.

“Toes are wonky” she says to Richmond whose eyes are glued to my body. 

“The suit is wonky” he comments with eyes on my breasts. “May I touch you?” he asks without making eye contact.

“Ok” I respond unsure if no is even an option and he stands behind me pulling the material taut until I can feel it on my chest and stomach like a corset. When I look behind he hes standing with a handful of the suit.

“That’s how it should fit” he tells Cassandra, sparing a look her way. The suit feels completely different with this kind of tension. He grapes lower, gathering the same amount of fabric in the small of my back. I feel like a doll in his care as he manhandles the suit. It’s oddly erotic, or maybe it’s been too long since a man has had his hands on me. He goes to do the same around my hips but there’s no stretch left. 

“Can you see if there’s any give?” he asks as if he hasn't already probably made at least five HR violations. I oblige finding some give.

“Hold it like that” Richmond demands and I wonder if he’s this bossy in bed. Girl, get your head out of the gutter!

“Cassandra test its resistance” he says and Cassandra comes over with some sort of scanner gun reading all over my body noting weak points with a red marker as well as what needs to be removed. 

“The suit has to fit like a glove, it’s most effective when the fibres are extended to their limit they interlock creating … well armour.” she explains.

“What if I have to pee?” I ask being practical.

“You’ll get a zipper once everything else fits seamlessly” Cassandra explains. It’s another level of overkill.

“Does everyone wear these?” I ask.

“They aren't required for smaller scale events, I always wear mine for the big ones” she explains. Richmond is still staring at me and it makes me feel naked, the proximity, the physical toughness, the attention. My body hums like a starving stomach craving sustenance. I’m gonna need to see a therapist for sure, I think looking away from him and back to Cassandra who clears her throat.

“Mr. Richmond, you have a call in two” she says to him and he nods, peeling his eyes from my ass. 

“Ensure it fits perfectly...Please” He says, taking one last look at me. He looks at Cassandra who nods with a smirk on her lips before leaving.

“I’m gonna go change” I announce heading into the restroom. When I get out I hand her the suit.

“Is he always so hands on?” I ask, a little unnerved.

“Hands on… he was with me but he was a lot less attentive and there was a lot more back and forth bickering until he pulled it so tight I couldn't breathe comfortably.” she discloses amused.

“I’m pretty sure that’s wrong of him” I remark.

“Terry’s like family - he’d never actually hurt me and lord knows he could” she huffs sitting on the conference table. Her disposition makes me think of them like siblings opposed to coworkers. The most toxic workplaces have the ‘family titles’ it's definitely a red flag.

“So how was your first week?’ she beams crossing her legs but my mind is on how it felt to be constricted in his hold and hugged by the suit.

“I’ve only considered quitting right now” I smile and she laughs.

“I came to your office because I was sure there was going to be fireworks. Terry was too but with how at ease he was I'd say you’re doing amazing on your first assignment. What was his feedback? I can help you decode its meaning to stay on his good side.” she smiles and I’m excited until I realize there was none.

“He just told me to stick to the protocol and that I did a good job. Oh and he prescribed extra hand to hand” I explain and her eyes light. Her smile widens like a Cheshire cat and she shakes her head.

“He’s setting me up to fail isn't he?” I ask, afraid of some humiliation ritual test.

Cassandra shakes her head. “No Lorence, it means you're keeping him up at night. He must think you're one of the best”

“I don’t copy.” I confess.

“The best agents are all the same Lorence and they never leave their people behind when shit hits the fan. He doesn't think you’ll be tripped up by the plans so he’s preparing you for the people.” she explains.

“Do I have anyone but him to fear?” I ask.

“No, that’s how I know you’re keeping him up. The guys that we’d need to fear see us as menu options - they don't know we’re trained to kick their ass and so they never have security with them. They’re easy to outsmart before things get ‘hand to hand’” Cassandra explains and it’s consistent with training. I get a reverie of the intensity in Richmonds eyes as he held the extra fabric of my suit taut, again. I never put much stock in her words before.

“I think you're wrong. Richmond doesnt look like he needs help attracting women. I’m sure you’ve had to shoo away your fare share.” I respond.

“Are you kidding?! He’s a work-a-holic. I've only seen him flirt for better access. His indiscretions are kept from me if they exist” she comments. “Come on, let's go shopping for after hours  in Monaco - I have a few party invites with an open plus one slot.” she winks and it sounds like a good way to relax and enjoy the rest of the day. Retail therapy is still therapy after all.

Cassandra and I end up in the heart of the city in stores with names that English speakers need tutorials to pronounce. Cassandra can sell salt to a snail because she convinces me to indulge in whims that are unfamiliar and then she swipes the company card stating outfits while on vacation are somehow a business expense. Paranoia makes me set aside the amounts in case it’s some test or something the Boss intends to scream at me for later. But for the rest of the night from shopping all the way to my night routine I’m a little uneasy. Terry Richmond’s ability to rattle me is unmatched. Whether in anger or cloaked kindness. The intensity of his expression is imprinted in my mind. 

I lay awake in bed slightly amused by the irony of Cassandra’s words. At least if they’re true I’m keeping him from sleeping too. It feels like some consolation for all he’s put me through. Maybe my haywire feelings are the result of something akin to Stockholm syndrome. The result of that stupid test. His gaze comes back to me again and the attention held within them. My body heats as recognition clicks into place, its reaction starts to make sense. After years of feeling unnerved and unsure I’ve read the first real emotions from him. There was real sincerity in his eyes. No resentment or animosity. Maybe hints of more complicated emotions but at its core it seemed to be pure preoccupation with my safety.

My body seems to settle at my brain's recognition of the day's events. The anxious energy leaves my body and I settle when it becomes clear to me that before all else my boss wants me to be okay. Before I take my last conscious thought, I promise to move forward with Richmond with that at the forefront of my brain.

I did a bit of research about the 'Tumblr getting shut down' rumour, and while I am not an expert in any of this, I just wanted to make a post for anyone following my account and my dear moots.

The rumour sparked because of tumblr staff being fired. Some are saying, this is connected to the tries to make tumblr even more profitable. They want to spend less money on staff, (from what I've read and been informed by others) so in the end the money they get is even more and in turn, even more profitable.

In the article, it said: In Wednesday’s announcement, Mullenweg explained that the newly announced layoffs will allow Automattic to become “more agile and responsive,” “break down silos that have created inefficiencies,” “focus on product quality,” and “ensure a viable financial model for long-term success.”

In automattic's post explaining this situation, they called this an "Restructuring Announcement". CEO Matt Mullenweg shared with Automattic employees the following message: This restructuring will result in an approximately 16% workforce reduction. This process is complex with Automatticians in 90 countries.

Of course, I've heard rumours like these for a lot of apps and they are currently fine and still running. Though, the discussion about all of this is still important. We need to remember profits and investments for tumblr is still important. Tumblr isn't a non-profit like ao3 is. They need the funds investors give, or they go bankrupt. Plus, ao3 is text based, Tumblr isn't. It needs even more funds because of that. So making it dependent on donations isn't going to work.

There are ways to protect yourself. So don't worry. Listen to those with a better understanding of this. One of the best advice I've heard is to be ready to back up your blog.

It might actually be only a rumour and nothing more. (I second this)

The loss they'd have from complete shut down would be MUCH greater that the possible profit loss they have now. Social media sites like these don't get shut down just like this. I genuinely do not believe it will be shut down. The argument brought forward is pretty weak under heavy scrutiny. There's isn't an overall reason for it.

Were to go if you need a similar platform like Tumblr? There are sites like pillowfort, dreamwidth, mastadon, livejournal, (for mature blogs, alot of go to fetlife).

WLF-Xb-KNT Wolf Knight

Description:

The WLF-Xb-KNT Wolf Knight is highly specialised one of a kind mech made from primarily the chassis of a Black Knight and a number of parts from a Battlemaster. Made to the whims of a mechwarrior with a strange idea with some mechtech experience, the Wolf Knight was constructed allegedly from a dream, that was then committed to paper, explored and executed. Its primary purpose is to be an upgraded Black Knight with heavier armour, jump jets and extensive re-engineering of the Black Knights interior and sensor suite. The interior was remade to fit a powerful Extra-Light engine. The chassis and frame was remodeled extensively and changing to a more common frame model of pieces of changed BL-7-KNT Black Knight pieces and that of a BLR-1G Battlemaster. Despite its Frankenmech design, the focus on off the shelf parts allows the Wolf Knight an ease of access for repairs and maintenance to a surprising degree despite the heavy modifications. The most taxing parts are its dual Myomer and servo system and the cockpit to sensor connections. The refit process documented the notes of these two extensively but nevertheless requires a very qualified engineer to repair and maintain. It makes extensive use of Triple Strength Myomers that run through the mech coupled with finely and highly tuned actuators, calibrated after the pilot's movements, the Wolf Knight can swing the great blade's motions in its hand with tilts, flicks and even whips in its attacks. This is made possible with a secondary Myomer system that works on tandem with the more powerful one, giving increased agility and precision. Lastly this secondary Myomer system is backed up and tied into an integrated hydraulic servo system with the fibres themselves attached to limit switches for a natural pullback and resistance. The practical nature or battlefield application was contentious even by the refitting engineers but it was found difficult to argue against the one placing the order. One of its most curious features and the namesake is the re-engieering of the sensor suite of the Black Knight. It uses similar principles as the originals Beagle Active Probe system which uses the small laser to scan. Instead it has a second sensor tower, giving it two "ears" on the Knight helmet. Together with the pilot harness this is called the High Oscilation Wave-Length system or H.O.W.L. for short. It functions by generating pulses and frequencies through the heart rate monitor and neurohelmet's brain wave readings. Which in turn create an algorithm that is impossible to predict or even anticipate for a computer. This forms the basis of the skip-frequencies used in the sensor system in its pulses. The effect shifts the Mech's position by one to two meters between pulses on hostile sensors, slightly distorting the Wolf-Knight position, velocity and direction. Even skilled combatants can be caught unaware of their mech suddenly shifting the targeting to compensate. Leading to glancing shots. However the H.O.W.L. system distorts command and control communication over long distance, forcing it rely on short wave range bands. For this reason, it is usually only active during active combat operations in order to allow for strategic coordination. This, along with the precise movements of the arms is achieved by a specially made cockpit. Rather than the usual joystick configuration, the mechwarrior wears a harness that can mimic arm movements of the pilot. In addition it keeps track of the pilot's vitals and uses these together with the helmet to modify the frequencies of of the sensor suite and probe. The harness is heavy to move and is is wholly integrated with the neurohelmet and cockpit at large and tailored for a single individual and does not interact well with ejections.

Armament:

The Wolf Knight wields a large sword in the right, though functionally is follows the design principles of Fedcom-era hatchets. Otherwise the loadout is very similar to that of a Black Knight. A Lord's Light 2 rather than the royal versions' Kinslaughter ERPPC in the left arm allows for long range sniping with an original Maxell DT medium laser mounted under the main cannon. It is supported by two Magna Mk III large lasers as shoulder cannons along with parts of the housing used for a Rifleman. Instead of the the original torso mounted McCorkel mounted in order to make space for the new internal systems. Using parts and housing from a a Catapult on each side of the torso is a pair of Martell Medium Lasers and Omnicron 1000 Small lasers. Allowing the Wolf Knight to brawl with to a similar degree as a standard Black Knight.

Sixteen Double heat sinks allows the Wolf Knight to remain at range and fight without significant overheating. Once it gets close and pounces with the shorter range lasers it can easily activate the full potential of the Triple Strength Myomer system.

Inside the chest of the Wolf Knight however remains the Beagle Active Probe from which the black knight was noted for carrying. It has been wired to a Ceres Metals model 666 Communication system that connects into the Beagle Active Probe together with the original TransComm Beta targeting system.

The engine is connect to a RedLine-F Series Outland Supercharger system that allows the Wolf Knight to pounce on targets with the blade. Four Chillton model 600 Jump jets give it an extra level of mobility. However the XL is a weak point in long engagements where endurance becomes the dominating factor as a single torso side being blown apart would stall the engine.

D-011 Design and Trivia!

Name: D-011 (or Doll as they’re sometimes called)

Height: 5’0

Age: ?

Status: Alive?(life level: ?)

Relationships: Julie (Owner)

Abilities: Strength and speed enhance, high durability

Doll was a servant robot, made without sentience and to serve their masters. However, these models were eventually scrapped due to poor quality and faulty coding.

Doll was eventually found and fixed up by Julie, who of course took them in to aid her in her missions.

Since Doll was originally made without sentience, Julie gave them an artificial heart so that they could feel emotions. They were at first unsure of how to process their new feelings, but they eventually got used to it. Kinda…

Doll is rather strong and quick for being an old model. Not as strong or agile as some other characters, but enough to be able to hold their own in a fight.

Extra trivia:

Doll’s design is based on wooden puppets and those mini wooden mannequins.

Doll is somehow incredibly durable, at one point taking 15 bullets to their body and getting whacked with a wooden broad in the face. Don’t ask how, even I don’t know.

Doll is incredibly protective of Julie, who is considered not just their master, but as their family. So they’ll do whatever they can to make sure no harm comes to her.

Doll is neither a mortal nor a nightmare, so while they can kill mortals (don’t mean they do), killing nightmares is presumably out of the question.

Doll has Atychiphobia, which is the fear of failure. Due to this, they tend to be unintentionally stubborn when it comes to following orders, refusing to leave a single order unfulfilled.

I’ll probably draw/write them interacting with the main Dreamer cast. Though I don’t exactly know how I’ll do that. So for now, just enjoy this new little character.

The Orchard of Gold

Richard had never imagined his mundane life could change so drastically during a lazy holiday afternoon. A student in his mid-twenties, he was visiting his grandmother’s quaint countryside home, where boredom usually reigned supreme. But on this particular day, a stroll through the woods led him to a sight that felt torn from the pages of a fairy tale.

An orchard stretched before him, rows upon rows of apple trees shimmering in the sunlight. The apples hanging from their branches were golden, not yellow or red but a gleaming, metallic gold. Curiosity overrode caution as Richard plucked one of the golden fruits. It was heavier than expected, cold and smooth to the touch. Without much thought, he sank his teeth into it.

The effect was immediate. A warm surge coursed through his body, and he fell to his knees. His plain, grey wife-beater dissolved into threads of radiant gold, reforming into a sleek soccer jersey emblazoned with "AC Milan" in shimmering script. His once lanky frame expanded into an athletic build, muscles forming as if sculpted by the gods themselves. His messy hair styled itself into a neat, confident coif, and his sneakers gleamed as though freshly polished.

Richard stumbled to his feet, feeling like an entirely different person. The orchard, it seemed, was no ordinary place.

The Alchemist's Touch

Returning home that evening, Richard couldn’t shake the strange energy that still coursed through his veins. His reflection in the bathroom mirror confirmed the transformation—he was unrecognizable. But the true discovery came by accident. While absentmindedly rubbing a normal apple from the kitchen against his golden jersey, he noticed the fruit began to shimmer. Within seconds, the apple had transformed into one of the golden ones from the orchard.

Heart pounding, Richard repeated the process with another apple, and the same result followed. Could he now create the golden apples? And if so, what did that mean?

The next day, he invited his best friend, Max, over. Max was skeptical as Richard explained the events but humored him when presented with a glowing gold apple. With an eye roll, Max took a bite. The moment his teeth broke the skin, a golden ripple spread over his body. His hoodie and jeans morphed into a gleaming AC Milan jersey and golden athletic shorts. His slouched posture straightened as his frame filled with muscle, his jawline sharpening into one of a model.

“Holy—” Max muttered, staring at his reflection in the window. “I feel incredible!”

Richard smirked. “Welcome to the club.”

Founding the Golden Army

Richard realized he had stumbled upon a secret of immense power. Word spread among his friends, who eagerly came to him for the golden apples. Each bite brought the same transformation—a drab, everyday existence exchanged for golden perfection. Soon, the group of young men began calling themselves the Golden Army, a name that felt both regal and intimidating.

Richard, as the founder and the original bearer of the golden jersey, became their de facto leader. The Golden Army was no mere social club; their newfound strength, agility, and confidence made them an unstoppable force in sports and beyond. They dominated soccer matches at the university, drawing awe and envy from peers and professors alike.

But it wasn’t just about physical prowess. The golden jerseys seemed to carry an aura of charisma and leadership. Wherever the Golden Army went, crowds gathered, and whispers followed. They began organizing events—charity soccer matches, fitness boot camps, and even motivational seminars. To the world, they were a group of young men spreading positivity and empowerment. But to Richard, it was more than that. He knew they were building something bigger.

The Temptation of Power

As the Golden Army grew, so did their influence. Men from nearby towns began seeking Richard, willing to do anything for a chance to join the golden ranks. It was exhilarating but also daunting. The golden apples became a currency of power, and Richard understood the responsibility that came with it.

One day, a stranger approached him. Unlike the usual hopefuls, this man exuded an air of authority. Dressed in a sharp black suit, he introduced himself as Elias, a representative from an unknown organization. He offered Richard a fortune in exchange for the secret of the golden apples.

Richard declined without hesitation, but Elias’s parting words lingered: “Power unchecked can corrupt even the noblest of intentions.”

A Glimmering Future

Despite the warning, Richard remained steadfast. he excelled during his training in the army. he tested off the charts with speed, agility, endurance. he was a model solider and upon ending his boot camp he was sent to afghanistan along with lemar who was also stationed there. during that time, that time he led a mission with a small group of soldiers. however, they were all caught and held captive and tortured for weeks. he managed to escape and free them but john was the only one who made it back to base camp. the others had been too badly injured or died in the extreme heat of the desert. he has a lot of PTSD of his days in the middle east and considers it the worst part of his life.

upon returning home the government wanted him to be the new face for captain america. which made him not only a 'superhero' but also a celebrity. john knew that would happen and prepared himself for it even though it took some getting used to as he tended to enjoy staying out of the spotlight.

Interview with F-105 Thunderchief Vietnam veteran pilots Vic Vizcarra and Paul Metz

In the explosive tragedy of the Vietnam War, the USAF’s Republic F-105 Thunderchief was a sleek supersonic hooligan raining down destruction. Fast, and extremely tough, the F-105 was a worthy descendent of the P-47. We spoke to Vietnam veterans Vic Vizcarra and Paul Metz to find out more about the experience of flying the ‘Thud’ into war.

Describe the F-105 in three words..

VV: Stable weapon platform

PM: Big, Rugged, Fast

What was the best thing about the F-105?

VV: Its speed

PM: Low attitude, high speed was unlike any airplane I have flown. Above 600 knots it was a thoroughbred racehorse. At 800 knots even better.

..and the worst?

VV: Turning ability

PM: It had a high wing loading and was not an air-to-air dogfighter.

What is the biggest myth about the aircraft? That it couldn’t hold its own in a dog fight and how it got the nickname “Thud” which I cover in the answer to your question #11.

What was your first combat mission like? Relatively easy since the target was not heavily defended.

What was your most memorable experience flying the F-105? First flight since it was before the two-seat “F” Model. Only time in my Air Force career where I took off by myself in a plane I had never flown before. The Check Out process consisted of doing an engine start and all after start checks with an Instructor pilot standing on a stand next to the cockpit and observing the student the day before the first flight. Then The Powers At Be wanted students to go home and think about it overnight.

What was the role of the F-105 in Vietnam? It was the primary fighter-bomber conducting 75% of all Air Force Strikes in North Vietnam the first five years of the war.

How would you rate it in the following categories

A. Instantaneous turn rates Comparable to the majority of US Air Force Fighters.

B. Sustained turn Slightly below the majority of US Air Force fighters.

C. Climb rate Good. Best Climb Was At Mach 0.9 until Intercepting and Maintaining 400 Kts.

D. General agility Good stable flight characteristics throughout its flight envelope.

E. High angle of attack performance? Excellent, Sufficient stall warning aircraft is about to depart

F. As a bomber Superior. Could carry largest weapons load further and faster than any other single engine Fighter-Bomber.

G. As a fighter Adequate. Maintained a positive air-to-air exchange record in Vietnam Even though That was not its mission.

H. As a SEAD platform Excellent. Duel seat F-105 “F” and Follow-On “G” Models were the primary Wild Weasel Platforms In Vietnam Era.

What was the mission of the F-105G and why was it so dangerous?

PM: The F-105G Wild Weasel was a role created in the turmoil of battle. It was a concept to counter the SA-2 radar guided surface to air missile (SAM). The concept was that the 2-seat F-105G would enter the target area ahead of the larger strike force and entice the SAM operators to shoot at the F-105G, the Wild Weasel. Then while the Weasels are dodging the SAMs, the strike force would attack and bomb the target and then quickly exit the target zone. Then, when the strike force was safe, you, the Wild Weasel, could exit the target area. This became an acronym which is stil used by the Weasels of today, “FILO” (“First In, Last Out“). The Weasel mission was obviously dangerous and many Weasels were shot down by SAMs and enemy anti-aircraft artillery (Triple A).

I. In terms of combat effectiveness and survivability? Excellent. The aircraft was known for its toughness and ability to return to base with extensive battle damage, especially after a third hydraulic line was added along the top of the aircraft spine away from the redundant duel flight control lines that ran together along the top of the bomb bay. A hit on one line usually meant both lines would be cut. Original layout provided redundancy in peacetime operations but not in combat.

J. Cockpit layout and comfort? Best ergonomic designed cockpit, way ahead of its time. Allowed the aircraft to be designed as a single crew platform.

What is the biggest myth about the type?

PM: I don’t know if there were any myths that stuck. Early in its life there were several accidents and there were suggestions of it being a “widow maker”. Meant originally as derogatory comment the nickname Thud was supposedly the sound it made when hitting the ground — “Thud”. In the end it became a dive bomber, a far cry from the role of low level nuclear bomber it was designed for. “Thud driver” is a mark of honour to those who flew her.

What should I have asked you? You didn’t miss a thing! Excellent list of questions.

Did the aircraft have a nickname? Yes, “Thud”. There are a couple of myths about the origin of the nickname “Thud”. The most popular myth was that it came from a character named Thunderchief In a kids TV Show. But here is the real origin, you can take this to the bank. When the F-105 came into the inventory it was way ahead of its time and initially encountered a lot of maturation problems, Especially with maintenance. The aircraft experienced many aborts, ground and air. This and designed with a bomb bay, Gave the Non-F-105 fighter community ammunition to razz the new F-105 community with the rhetorical question, “What sound does an F-105 make when it hits the ground?…….Thud!

Which weapons did you deploy and which was the most spectacular from the cockpit? The most common weapons load was the Mk 117 750-lb bomb with six loaded on the Multiple Ejector Rack (MER) carried On the centerline station on the belly, plus one on each outboard station. The outboard station bombs were replaced With AIM-9 Sidewinder Missile For self defense when MiG-17s started appearing. When SAMs started appearing, the ‘Winders were replaced with QRC-160 Electronic Jamming pods. The most spectacular from the cockpit was the CBU-58 which was a bomb that would split in half and release 650 Bomblets that had small vanes causing the bomblet to spin and arm. The bomblets would spread over a large area causing destruction of soft targets and personnel. Great Weapon Against Flack Sites. Beauty of the weapon was you didn’t have to be precise or that accurate upon release. Another spectacular weapon was the M-118 3,000 Lb bomb because of its size. We carried two, one at each inboard wing station.

What was hardest about your combat deployment? Leaving the Family. This was pre-internet days so communicating with the family took close to two weeks to establish continuity between discussions.

Do you love the aircraft? Definitely. I feel honoured to have flown it with fellow pilots during an era In which this aircraft joined the annals of history.
