Confessions - Arrow Music Notes 7x20

Roy returns to help the team and ends up causing some problems as his bloodlust takes over and kills two guards.  The episode focuses on the team covering for him to the police, retelling the story like a murder mystery.

True confession time: I am writing this on the day of Emily’s last episode as Felicity so this may be a bit disjointed or lacking focus.  However, I will do my best to focus on Roy instead.

The return of Roy Harper

There are certain themes Blake Neely loves to put in as much as possible: Oliver’s Arrow/hero themes, the Olicity theme, “I forgot who I was”, Deathstroke, Black Siren, and Roy.  Of all the hero themes (not including Oliver), his theme “Try Roy Try” (2x02) is used the most frequently: 41 times before this episode, 36 being between Seasons 2 and 3.  It is almost always in the horn and is very similar to Oliver’s hero theme, just filling in the minor third of the chord in the middle of the 5 note theme. Since this episode is about bringing in Roy to help the team stop the Ninth Circle and then covering for him, it should not be a surprise that the predominant theme throughout the episode is his hero/Arsenal theme.

It first appears as Roy is shown joining the team at the scene in Oliver’s flashback/telling of the story.  It plays again as he comes down the bunker to greet everyone (in Felicity’s retelling).  It returns two more times as he breaks in with parkour to steal the thermal fogger and then fights the Ninth Circle goons.  The drums that accompany his parkouring are often used in his fighting music (such as “Team Continues without Oliver” 3x11) as well as the electronics when he fought the Ninth circle (the octave jump has been used before but Blake Neely’s website is under construction so I can’t find the exact place it had been).

There are two versions that are different such as when Diggle “finds” unconscious Roy in his retelling of the story and then when Roy actually wakes (the last note changing).  As he fights under bloodlust, the violins do a glissando (slide up) used for unsettling, creepy moments and then music/sounds are given an under water muffled sound with a low bass drum beat as he looses control.  His theme returns one last time in both low and high brass as Oliver tells the team that they have to protect him while he comes to himself looking terrified and horrified, covered in blood.  This brings back 3x06 when Roy asked Oliver not to abandon him (his theme was used at that point as well).

One of my favorite subtle but powerful moments was when Oliver and Felicity told Roy about Emiko and not telling Thea about a surprise evil half-sister yet, trying to protect her while she is in a good place. The music was the hammered dulcimer part of “Stay away from Her” (2x11) which was the music often used for Roy and Thea’s relationship beginning with Roy under Mirakiru and Thea trying to help him and then Oliver later telling Roy to stay away from Thea to protect her.  This theme is used about the lies that Roy and Oliver told to protect Thea and then how that affected her “Secret Destiny” (2x23) as she leaves to train with Merlyn.  Later on, it was used as he tells her in 3x19: “I promised myself I would never lie to you again.” Using this part of the theme was a subtle reminder of this as they ask him to keep it a secret for now.

It is also used again at the end of the episode as Felicity finds Emiko’s headquarters and the team leaves to find her, Oliver inviting Roy to join them.  As Oliver goes to meet his half-sister to stop her, he invites Roy, who is also family, refusing to abandon him or give up on him. The hammered dulcimer aspect was also used in 2x12 “Roy Spiraling” when Roy was training with the Arrow, begging to help and said “take me with you.” Oliver didn’t trust Roy at that point especially with Mirakiru but now after all Roy has done for him and the team, he is willing to trust him and offers another chance.

Music of the Lazarus Pit/Nanda Parbat returns as Oliver asked Roy how he died with male chorus, the duduk (also used for those going a little crazy coming out the pit) and bass drum “Resurrecting Sara” (4x03). The music turns to strings as Roy tells Oliver that he never meant to hurt anyone and the team didn’t have to cover for him. 

Team Arrow

As each member becomes “interrogated” by Dinah, the music changes to match each member.  Oliver’s first time includes the Arrow strings, horn as he admits the new Green Arrow is his half-sister and hammered dulcimer.  His guitar harmonics plays as he tells Dinah that she knows he would never kill anyone while the police officer rebuttals that he has killed before. The Arrow strings also play during his second interrogation.  

Felicity’s interrogation included strings and electronics to go with being Overwatch. Roy’s included a repeating low electronic bass note that had played as he left Felicity in her retelling, connecting the stories and plot along. Diggle’s also had strings and beats similar to Felicity. Rene’s included an electronic theme used in 7x03 back when Felicity wanted to set a trap for Diaz with Rene and the FBI. It brings back the theme of uneasy alliances as this interrogation brings up his alliance with Emiko as well as the rocky relationship he has had with Dinah and the police over the past year. 

The piano plays as Oliver, Diggle and Felicity explain to Rene and Dinah why they need to lie and support Roy.  This is Oliver’s instrument for more intimate settings and it speaks to his heart not one that Roy is always part of the team but how much he has done for them, especially in Season 3.

The Ninth Circle/Emiko

As Roy fights the Ninth Circle, electronics that had previously been used just for Emiko play. That means that the electronics are part of the Ninth Circle sound alongside the crutale (bowed cymbal) electronic sound heard in previous episodes with Dante and a little later.

Part of Emiko’s string pattern plays as she shoots at Diggle and Rene before he follows her.  As he catches up with her, wooden percussion and the crutales sound plays.

When Emiko tells Oliver at the end that she was partially responsible for his death, an electronic sound travels down almost like Oliver’s emotions and heart at being wounded in one of his most vulnerable places. Someone he had tried to love as family had betrayed him, being one of the reasons for his father’s death and his own 5 years of hell.  This music represents both of their anger and grief. His hero horn and music finished the episode as he ends up pinned under rock and unconscious.

Extra Notes:

- I wrote most of this before the finale and edited it after.  Which is good because my goodness...I am super emotional right now.  I wrote a brief thing on the music for the end of 7x22 but I will write more in-depth in a week or two once I write 7x21.  So much good music to cover in the next two episodes.

- I never realized how much I depended on the tracks from Blake Neely’s website until it was under construction.  Hopefully all the tracks in italics will return soon!

Washboard Wednesday - We Deserve Nice Things Edition

So, Gumdrops, what happened this season? Where were the shirtless honeymoon hijinks? The showertime chats? The waking up in the morning and discussing married things while missing pajamas? To summarize -- why did Oliver Queen wear so many damn clothes this season?!  The answer is I don’t know. Honestly. Because we give the love. We do. We appreciate him for his mind and his heart very much, but every so often, it’s nice to get to appreciate the pretty wrapping, you know?

In a word -- we was robbed. I have a good mind to address this glaring issue with David Ramsey at HVFF London. If he’s going to be directing an episode next season, I think he should be made aware of the power he wields to satisfy us - his loyal squad. And after all, he is the patron of WBW.  

You deserve pretty, my friend, so as we wait for the final episode of S6 and anticipate all of the speculation about S7, I thought you might not mind a bit of nostalgia on your dash...a reminder of those heady days when we could be inspired and enthralled. Without further ado... I tried to make the first one beautiful for you. Well, extra beautiful because...lookie...

Man Face Monday - Pre-Diplomatic Henley Edition

Hope you had a good week. I wasn’t hugely into the last episode, but things are ticking along, aren’t they? When Oliver was recruited to help “rescue” Joe, he wore his wrinkle-free diplomat suit, which was a bit ho-hum. I enjoyed the casual moments earlier in the episode, for reasons. Man Face Monday - Hot Tech Support Dude Edition

Well, that’s kind of what he was last week, right? I mean...yay! 

So many great things in last week’s episode. From a face standpoint, it was a little tricky in that the lighting was a little dark for Oliver in places, but that was kind of romantic, right? Without further ado...here’s some face for ya.

Man Face Monday - Oliver is (Mostly) Troubled Edition

Hey kids! Hope you are well.

I am crazy busy with work, but didn’t want to leave you faceless today! 

Since last time, I posted a little theory/speculation about Vigilante. If you missed my post, please take a look here.

Man Face Monday - October Return Face Edition
