"The Flying Boxcar" A little off topic, but we wanted to take a moment to wish the Fairchild C-119 a Happy 75th Birthday, as she had her first flight today, (Monday) November 17th, 1947. Designed as a cargo plane, if you could name it, the C-119 could pretty much haul it Everything from Paratroopers to spare parts could be dropped from it: drones and even parts of satellites could be picked up by it - in midair! It certainly earned its name. The C-119, of which over 1,000 were built, had an incredible service life, lasting from 1949 the early 1970s, serving in Korea and Vietnam (where it even moonlighted as an effective ground-attack gunship as the AC-119). It was used by the US Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps. The last Us military C-119, used by the Navy, was retired in 1975. It also served with over a dozen other nations, and in countless "unofficial" conflicts across the globe. The last domestic use of the C-119 came as "smoke jumper" aircraft, deploying wildland firefighters by parachute in Alaska - in 1990. From • @tsptr From 1961 to 1975 the CIA fought and sponsored a ‘secret war’ in Laos for the control of the country’s opium fields. The CIA would traffic heroin grown in the Laotian poppy fields back to the US using their Air America front. During the 60s they brought huge quantities of the drug out of the Golden Triangle and back to the US. Once stateside the heroin was sold into the domestic drug trade providing millions of dollars to fund their ongoing secret war. The heroin was also used to flood the ghettos in an effort to quell and control the burgeoning civil rights and black power movements. This explosion of hard drugs would ultimately create many of the contemporary issues of drug abuse in poor communities we have today The CIA has had its hands in the international drug trade since the Korean War in 1950 when they traded weapons and heroin in exchange for intelligence. They would subsequently go on to use the same drug smuggling tactics during the 70s and 80s in Central and South America as they tried to depose and set up puppet governments in countries including Honduras, Mexico, Panama and Venezuela. During the 80s the CIA smuggled cocaine from Nicaragua into the US which was then distributed as crack cocaine into Los Angeles, the profits of which were funnelled to the CIA backed Contras who were trying to overthrow the Sandinista government Ironically this all went on while the US government waged their ‘War on Drugs’. The same tactics are still used today, since the US invaded poppy rich Afghanistan in 2001, it’s opium yield has increased 35 fold as the agency strike deals with the Taliban. 30-year retrospective: Air America was released in theaters on Aug. 10, 1990. It definitely had trouble finding an audience and both Flatliners and Young Guns II beat Air America at the weekend box office. I never read the Christopher Robbins' non-fiction book but the movie might have fared better as a straight drama. At least the film made back its money.
