now that endless space 2 and stellaris exist there's no excuse to keep putting linear tech trees in 4X games. they're both just a gargantuan waste of potential strategic depth and (in the case of 'historical' 4Xs like civ) end up encoding a lot of racist and colonialist ideology into your game mechanics

full disclosure: with g-lo, illuminarrow, and mawrasite, i'm probably going to cool it on charms for now, with only the occasional new sticker. villainous isn't exactly lucrative when it comes to sales, and it's always been purely passion for me (when i do my taxes, we'll see if i broke even 😅) but i want to diversify my shop and get some different fandoms in there -- on the docket is a full homestuck charm set (16 characters), some hazbin stuff, and an OFF sticker pack, among other things. this isn't to say that ill never make more villainous merch, just that i need to make some other things for a while, and as long as something isn't discontinued, i'll keep restocking it.

6) Who's your favorite lord/protagonist?

Celica and Micaiah are two other huge favorites! I've spoken on length on why i love them so... Yeah, I think they're neat and every time someone says something mean about them I love them more out of spite.

8) Least favorite lord/protagonist?

....Ephraim.

Before I inevitably get booed off the stage, hear me out.

I have two major problems with Ephraim: First is that his arc of becoming a less reckless, wiser leader feels entirely informed when he spends the entire story charging in and stabbing whatever's in front of him and it keeps working, but the second, far bigger problem I have with him is that he constantly makes Eirika look like an idiot for trying to clean up after him.

Biggest offender being the early chapters where Ephraim is the one who has the brilliant idea to charge into Grado with only three other men and engage in guerilla warfare for nothing other than his lust for battle, when Eirika chases after him to rescue him because this shit will inevitably get him captured or killed, guess what?

By plot contrivances, she is the one who gets captured and Ephraim's the one to rescue her. Fuck off game, seriously.

Also in the Eirika Route she fails to save Queen Ismaire despite having the entire army on her side and Ephraim apparently manages to conquer Grado all by himself along with probably a bunch of green units, for all they're worth.

Granted, I haven't played Sacred Stones in years so I could very well remember things to be worse than they actually are, but... yeah. Doesn't help that no one seems to really criticize Ephraim because according to mainstream fandom, the quality of a lord's writing depends entirely on how many people they stab. The more people they stab, the better written they are.

Phoenix Mode was not only an harmless inclusion in Fates but it should have become a mainstay in the series. If someone wants to play Fire Emblem like a visual novel, then by all means let them.

And this is more of a complaint I have with the gaming community in general, but for the love of Sothis shut up about difficulty settings and stop complaining about how people don't play single player games the way you want them to.

I wanted to play with modern clothing, so I pulled the boys into a fashion show. Building something that reflected their personalities was a little harder than I had originally anticipated. I hadn’t realized how much I relied on changing bodies to reflect character. This was a good lesson. Scopes and his warm neutrals and soft textures. Sprays and his wild colors and layers. I’m still not sold on Voc’s outfit, the hat feels right, and the skull hoodie. The more cyberpunk pants feel…. Not wrong, but not right? Airlock however is spot on, worn leather jacket and beloved knit sweater. Last is Rings and Jayk, Rings is all soft comfy academia, and Jayk has his little skater vibes. I’m happy with them all. Especially Jayk and Rings.

5. What game would you recommend to someone new to the series?

ugh this is so HARD because i don't think there's any game that's perfect for this...

if they're new to the series but have enjoyed at least a couple older video games at some point (and thus have some tolerance for a bit of gameplay cruft and GBA-era rough edges), i'd be really tempted to throw Sacred Stones at them. absolutely gorgeous sprites, good music, probably the most solid/focused/best-executed story in the series, fun support conversations, and very good gameplay whose only flaw is "it's kinda too easy." but it's satisfying and if someone likes everything about it but "too easy," then that's an easy problem to fix with subsequent games lol

i suspect Awakening is probably the objectively-better answer, though. first "modern"-feeling FE in terms of how streamlined and nice the mechanics feel, the depth/multiplicity of strategies, the storyline is weaker but still has definite highlights (especially when the kids show up), etc

Three Houses is a solid contender but the game is kind of bloated with extras that i think can make playing it feel like a bit of a drag; i know a lot of people who just kinda flaked out or gave up b/c of all the monastery stuff, and i wouldn't want someone's first FE to end that way

i do love the Tellius games but i wouldn't recommend them as starter games. the 3d sprites are kinda ugly and it definitely shows its age a bit in terms of gameplay cruft

11. A character that deserved better?

Edelgard, tbh. she's fantastic when the game isn't trying to make her all woobie/waifu/etc. wouldn't even take many changes to fix this one!

also Renning. i love what's on the page but he gets so little and shows up so late. give the dude some damn base conversations plz

also Meg. the game is so mean to her, goddamn.

12. A game that deserved better?

oh boy. the problem here is, if i finished playing an FE game, that means i liked it well enough over all, even if there's stuff i didn't like. like, i wish Awakening's storyline was stronger, but it definitely feels like it executed on exactly what it wanted to do, so i wouldn't say the game deserves better per se

so i guess i'll say the two FE games i tried and failed to play:

fe6: i ragequit on the map with the fucking reinforcements that move the same turn that they spawn. motherfuckers. why

fe14: i was already pretty "eh" on the story and then that one fucking "defend [x] turns" map (unhappy reunion iirc) took SO much finicky effort to survive that by the time i finished it i was like. ugh. i'm so tired. and then i put it down for a while and never picked it back up oops

13. What do you like most about Fire Emblem?

...god this is going to make me sound SO uncultured but, the support conversations, especially in the older games, are just so delightful. delightful in-and-of-themselves (especially when they would happen DIRECTLY ON THE BATTLEFIELD lmao), and also, were probably weirdly influential in how i thought about game writing / writing generally. conveyed a huge amount of personality & implied huge things about the world & in a relatively small space; and also refused to let anyone be just a rando soldier in your army; you can look back at short fiction i wrote in middle school and see how much i was striving to get that huge-cast-small-space-feel in that format. simple but effective approach

also it's nice to have a big-name game series that executes so well on story and gameplay, on average. i've played a lot of Final Fantasy and i love those games but. often the gameplay is just kinda mediocre/grind-y, right, and i'm forcing my way through for the story? could NOT be fire emblem lol

9) Did you like the map exploration and why?

I like the exploration where you are in Alm and Celica's PoV and can just look around for stuff a lot! Examining the background is great and all the flavor text does wonders for Alm and Celica's characterization. It's also really funny.

But for the rest... the overworld exploration is really annoying with the endless reinforcements especially if they attack you first (had some units in my Ironman runs die because they got the first turn and I couldn't do jack about it), and the dungeons are fun at first but get kinda tedious on repeated playthroughs.

18) Who's your favorite VA performance?

Boring response but, come on. Ian Sinclair by far, Berkut would be nowhere the character he is without his performance.

But honestly, every voice actor in this game is wonderful. Especially Kyle McCartney for Alm!

32) Do you ship any rarepairs? What drew you to them?

Oh, do I!?

In order:

Faye/Celica: Childhood friends to lovers, it having a slight base in canon with Faye actually thinking highly of Celica (or at the very least, she's happy to see her if Celica comes to visit Ram in Act 2), kinda has the same sugar star-crossed lovers vibes Alm/Celica has except Faye is actually a villager with no strings attached, Faye getting over Alm only to realize she has a thing for Celica, them being the only girls in Ram so probably Faye was Celica's best friend in Ram excluding Alm...

I could go on, really, but the short story is it has a lot of potential of both fluff and angst and there are a bunch of quality fanfics that got me into the rarepair to begin with!

Faye/Rinea: It has a lot of what makes Faye/Celica good with the whole farmer/nobility thing going, but also you're pairing the two women who arguably got fucked over by the narrative the most.

In-universe it makes a lot of sense, too, two women who placed their whole identity around a man with it ending in tragedy of both finding comfort and meaning in each other. Has a lot of both fluff and angst potential, especially with Witch Rinea being a thing.

Also I wrote a modern AU fluff fic about them which only made me get attached to the pair more. It's also the first proper fic about Faye/Rinea, something I love to brag about!

Celica/Rinea: Completing the OT3. Red/Blue dynamic, both noblewomen and also Celica would give Rinea all the love she deserves! Also look at this fanart come on

Celica/Clair: I feel Clair would definitely crush hard on Celica. As most women seem to do, really. Also dunno, I think it fits!

Sonya/Catria: They pretty😳 Also, similar cool/chill vibes!

Palla/Mathilda: It literally just came up to me. I think it fits a lot.

Python/Silque: Similar color scheme, looks cute, also shipping the cynical lazy bastard with the tireless devout healer is always nice!

Clair/Gray/Tobin: Not really a rarepair per se, but I don't really think it's popular as an OT3? I don't know, I think the dynamic could be a lot of fun! (Even if I don't think Clair and Tobin like each other romanticall)

There are definitely some rarepairs I forgot, I often see a lot of pics with rarepairs I end up loving which is why it turned into a tag! #echoes rarepairs my beloved
