1/2 BatB book recs (that are totally not a ploy to get recs for stuff I haven’t read): Beauty and Rose Daughter by Robin McKinley (and maybe Sunshine, McKinley really likes BatB.) Bryony and Roses by T. Kingfisher, a tribute/rebuttal to Rose Daughter. Cruel Beauty by Rosamunde Hodge is more a Hades and Persephone/Tam Lin mashup. Of Beast and Beauty by Stacey Jay is an almost sci-fi but not really take. Beastly by Alex Flynn is a modern retelling, much better than its ridiculous movie adaptation.
2/2 The anthology Silver Birch, Blood Moon has an awesome Rumpelstiltskin story by Patricia Briggs that I won’t spoil as well as a Voudon BatB, Skin So Green and Fine. Angela Carter has a couple short stories on the theme. I wasn’t a fan of A Court of Thorns and Roses, but a lot of people loved it. For a kid’s book, Max Eilenberg’s BatB is lovely. Grace Draven’s Entreat Me wasn’t bad, but not my favorite. And I’ll start throwing more Rumbelle fic recs at you when you’re further along with OUAT.
OK, first of all: I have died and gone to heaven, because holy crap, you like Cruel Beauty!
Personally, I was partial to “The Dark Divine” by Bree Despain (YA paranormal romance with a very good narrator’s voice)
I also liked “Beastkeeper” by Cat Hellisen (middle grade with a stronger fantasy streak than most BatB retellings and a neat twist thrown in for good measure; I also enjoy the author’s style of storytelling in general)
And then there’s “Mistwalker” by Saundra Mitchell, which is a bit of an odd duck, but a great read when you’re in the right mood (it’s not primarily a love story, and the pacing is slooooow, but it explores themes of grief and family in a way that resonated with me)
Literally anyone with recommendations of their own, please chime in. I’m being out-BatB’d here! (Though I have to say, this isn’t exactly the sort of “competition” you can lose, per se, because the result is always going to be “more good BatB retellings for the reading list” *g*)

Alex DeSpain is a Portland-based illustrator. He is currently studying Graphic Design at Portland State University but he considers himself an illustrator. “I’m studying Design because I love form and the way it functions is useful knowledge as a freelance illustrator.”
“I’ve got a lot of influences but I think I have a particular take on what I do.” Music is a big influence for him – especially Psychedelic Garage Rock. Juxtapoz Magazine described his work as 'crazy', but in a good way. “There tends to be a lot of energy in the work I create.”
Currently he is working on a series of patterns to be used as Textiles. He is also working on two zines that are based in collaboration with other illustrators. “I like the human hand represented in all of my illustrations and I like the work to be accessible to regular folks.” His aim is for people to relate to his message and hopefully inspire others to create.
Check out his Alex DeSpain Illustration & Design website: http://www.alexdespain.com/, follow him on Tumblr: http://alexdespain.tumblr.com/ and Instagram: @alex.despain
