Fanart of @eisenkrahe 's amazing Horror Express fanfic series. And yes, Alexander Saxton (Christopher Lee's character) ends up with nipple piercings in it, but the tattoos came from a prompt of @eisenkrahe 's wife.

Why did a horror podcast capture my views on love better than literally anyone in my life so far
[Image Description: Transcript from The Wrong Station by Alexander Saxton: She would take it the wrong way, think he meant some confession of love; but love, the way that people speak of love, was nothing close to what he felt, unless we say the warming wind feels love for maple buds unfurling at winter's end.]

Christopher Lee: A Sinister Centenary - Number 22
Welcome to Christopher Lee: A Sinister Centenary! Over the course of May, I will be counting down My Top 31 Favorite Performances by my favorite actor, the late, great Sir Christopher Lee, in honor of his 100th Birthday. Although this fine actor left us a few years ago, his legacy endures, and this countdown is a tribute to said legacy! Today’s Subject, My 22nd Favorite Christopher Lee Performance: Sir Alexander Saxton, from Horror Express.
Tumblr media
The relationship between Christopher Lee and fellow actor Peter Cushing is almost as legendary as the actors themselves. And while I’ve talked about their appearances onscreen together a couple times before now – discussing features like “Curse of Frankenstein” and “The Gorgon” – perhaps no picture more interestingly uses their dynamic than “Horror Express.” In most movies, the pair were at each other’s throats – the Doctor vs. His Creature, Professor Meister vs. Dr. Namaroff – but in “Horror Express,” neither plays the villain. Instead, the pair double-up as twin protagonists, who have to band together to face a great evil. Horror Express” is a somewhat odd thriller. It’s sort of a bizarre combo of stories like “Murder on the Orient Express” and the work of H.P. Lovecraft, blending Gothic chills with sci-fi strangeness in a spine-tingling murder-mystery with a horrifying twist. In the movie, Lee and Cushing play a pair of successful, well-respected scientists: Sir Alexander Saxton and Dr. Wells, respectively. The two are both the best of friends and the most intense rivals: they like and care about each other, but they’re constantly feuding and bickering at the same time. Wells has a habit of poking his nose into Saxton’s business, and Saxton’s stiff, no-nonsense attitude occasionally gets on Wells’ nerves. The pair both end up bunked together while traveling on the Trans-Siberian Express. As it turns out, Saxton has discovered an oddity during his travels: a mysterious humanoid creature, preserved in ice, which he believes is the fabled “Missing Link.” While en route to Moscow, the creature in question is thawed out from the ice and begins a killing spree: it’s eventually revealed that the monster is actually an extraterrestrial being, almost as old as the Earth itself, with powers and knowledge most mortals cannot comprehend. The two scientists are forced to put aside their differences to combat the creature, working with other passengers to try and stop the beast before the train reaches its final destination. While the thrills are fun and the chills delightfully disturbing, what really makes the movie great is a combination of two elements. One is the atmosphere: movies and stories set aboard trains can be somewhat hit or miss, you have to know how to use the space. This film does that, playing with the claustrophobic elements of the rail ride to its advantage. The idea of being trapped with a monster that you can’t fully understand, in a kill-or-be-killed situation, is a concept that’s just as unsettling today as it would have been when the film was released in 1972. I would say it would be great to see a modern remake of the film, to see how modern cinematography and effects wizardry could compare… …But there would be one thing the remake, if it were to happen, simply would not be able to hold a candle to. This is the other element that truly makes the movie great: Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing’s onscreen chemistry. It’s the relationship between Saxton and Wells – which I like to think, in some places, might have mirrored the relationship between the actors playing them – that really makes the movie work. Whether they’re snapping at each other or rallying others to battle, these two carry so much conviction and have such interesting depth to their work that it never fails to entertain. They can even be humorous at times, especially in the earlier parts of the film, and yet you never doubt their capabilities or the care they have for each other. I can’t automatically think of too many other great cinema duos in the modern era who could have the same kind of powerful dynamic and make it work; the best that comes to my mind would be Benedict Cumberbatch as Saxton with Martin Freeman as Wells. And as cool as that movie would be, were it to happen…sorry, Sherlock and Watson, I think I’d still prefer Dracula and Van Helsing here. Tomorrow the countdown continues with My Number 21 choice!

Neil Roronoazs’ horror podcast rec list 2021 - Part 1
I love horror, it’s one of my favourite genres. If you’re like me however, and find much of the assorted mainstream horror media unpalatable, there’s always podcasts! Many avid podcasts listeners know about such offerings as The Magnus Archives, Archive 81, and Alice Isn’t Dead and for good reason. But I’d like to offer a selection of my favourite lesser known horror and audio drama podcasts so they can get the recognition they deserve. And so I’ll have other people to talk about them with because the fandoms are small or completely nonexistent please help I’m dying.
This ended up being quite long, so I’ve chosen to split it up and also put everything under a cut. Enjoy!
Wrong Station. You may wish to adjust the dial, you are currently tuned into the Wrong Station. A horror anthology podcast created by Alexander Saxton, Anthony Botelho, and Jacob Duarte Spiel, and is styled like a series of old radio plays. Each episode features a standalone story ranging from unsettling and creepy, to ‘keeps you looking over your shoulder on the bus ride home’ terrifying, to “would that be messed up or what?”, all narrated by Anthony and a rotating cast of other Toronto based voice actors. They have a website (wrongstation/.com - without the slash), where listeners can find content warnings and full transcripts for each episode. They also have a patreon, and can be found on facebook, twitter and instagram under “Wrong Station” or “TheWrongStation”.
The White Vault. Travel not advised. A found footage horror fiction audio drama created by Fool & Scholar Productions, it follows the events of a repair team sent to a remote research station in Svalbard, Norway where they explore the horrors that lie in the farthest reaches of the world. Featuring a multinational team of vocal talents, and some of the best sound design I’ve encountered in several years of listening to horror podcasts, it makes the terror that much more visceral. They have a website (thewhitevault/.com) and a patreon, where listeners can find full episode transcripts for free. The main podcast is a serial, so it is recommended that you listen from season 1, episode 1: Fristed, but they also have two standalone miniseries The White Vault: Artifact and The White Vault: Imperial, that can be listened to without hearing the rest of the podcast, though I would personally recommend listening to the main series first so you get the full experience. Each miniseries collection costs $15 but is well worth the price. I listened to Artifact in one sitting in broad daylight and was terrified for the rest of the day.
Hello From the Hallowoods. We go now to a stretch of woods not unlike where I spent my childhood. Guided by our beloved host, Nikignik, this broadcast follows a group of LGBTQ+ survivors as they deal with the wildlife, nameless terrors, nameful terrors, beings beyond comprehension, the Instrumentalist, and personal journeys in the forest at the end of the world. Written and produced by William A. Wellman, who also provides the vocal talent for Nikignik, Hallowoods is an episodic horror podcast featuring snapshots of various characters in the titular Hallowoods. Each broadcast centers around a specific theme, often with underlying themes of existential horror and dystopia, as well as queer love, identity and experience. It makes for a delightfully creepy and deeply heartfelt show that I can’t fully express my enjoyment of. It is recommended that listeners start from Season 1: Episode 1 - Keys, in order to get the full experience of the show. There is a website (hellofromthehallowoods/.com), a patreon, a tumblr @hellofromthehallowoods (hello Mx. Wellman! your work has kept me good company while I become a bus station cryptid), and can also be found on facebook, twitter, instagram, and youtube. Full episode transcripts and content warnings are available on the website.
