Alexandre-Jean Dubois-Drahonet (1791-1834) "Portrait of Achille Deban de Laborde" (1817) Oil on canvas Located in the Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, Massachusetts, United States Painted during the Bourbon restoration, this portrait depicts the son of a fallen Napoleonic hero during a time of anti-imperialism in France. Eight-year-old Achille wears a miniature version of the embroidered Hussar uniform his father, Baron Jean-Baptiste Deban de Laborde, would have worn. His father’s military awards, notably the ceremonial sword and Légion d’honneur hanging in the upper left, surround the young boy. Achille would ultimately rise to the rank of colonel in the French cavalry.

Alexandre-Jean Dubois-Drahonet | France (1790–1834) | Female Nude | (French Portrait Painter)

Drahonet was a student and disciple of Neo-classical French master, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and first exhibited at the Salon in 1822. The young artist painted the future Queen of England (Queen Victoria) when a girl, commissioned by William IV in 1832 as part of a much larger commission of some ninety portraits of officers and soldiers in uniform (now in the Royal Collection, Windsor). It was part of the commission to paint a series of pictures illustrating recent changes in the uniforms and weapons of the British Army.

The artist also worked for Charles X, painting a portrait of his grandson, Henri, duke of Bordeaux (now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Bordeaux) and also worked for Louis-Philippe when duke of Orléans and after his accession.

Malibran was known for her stormy personality and dramatic intensity, becoming a legendary figure after her death in Manchester, England, at age 28. Contemporary accounts of her voice describe its range, power and flexibility as extraordinary." Later in her article, the cause of death was identified as sequelae from falling off of a horse.

Alexandre-Jean Dubois-Drahonet (1791-1834) "The Marchioness of Londonderry at the coronation of King William IV" (1831) Oil on canvas Located in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, England Frances Vane, Marchioness of Londonderry (1800-1865) was a wealthy Anglo-Irish heiress and noblewoman. She was the daughter of Sir Henry Vane-Tempest, 2nd Baronet. She married Charles William Stewart, 1st Baron Stewart. She became a marchioness in 1822 when Charles succeeded his half-brother as 3rd Marquess of Londonderry. Through her daughter, Lady Frances Vane, wife of John Churchill, 7th Duke of Marlborough, she is the great-grandmother of Sir Winston Churchill.
