PRESENCE - Review

DISTRIBUTOR: XYZ Films

SYNOPSIS: Jennifer leaves New York after a suffering mental breakdown. She is attempting to get her life back in order when an old boyfriend reenters the picture. Just as things are becoming starned, Jennifer is contacted by her best friend Samantha with good news concerning their joint business venture. Shortly thereafter, Jennifer is boarding a private plane that brings her to a billionaire’s private yacht. Jennifer and Samantha seem to have patched their friendship and are working out the business deal, except that Jennifer begins to be plagued by violent, unsettling visions. Is it her anxiety attempting to sabotage her once again or might it be something else, a sinister presence that has latched onto her?

REVIEW: PRESENCE is a supernatural film noir set in the confined space of a yacht out at sea. The plot has several interesting twists and turns, combined with engaging performances that maintains a viewer’s interest. It is a classic premise of an old dark house renovated to fit a sunny cruise.

Filmmaker Christian Schultz has an excellent location. The yacht is just the right size so that the crew is able to be secluded and big enough to allow the cast not to get lost in the vessel and interact without bumping into each other. The filmmaker gets nice coverage of the boat, adds an organic flow to the narrative, and creates a subtle atmosphere of mystery and terror. The interiors provide a sense of confinement without being claustrophobic and the exterior imparts a sense of isolation. The overall effect feels like a contemporary Poe tale set on a yacht.

The story revolves around Jennifer, played by actress Jenna Lyng Adams. Her performance is a complex palette of emotional intensity. She brings a sense of innocence to the role that she is able to transform into a terrifying menace. It is a captivating performance that draws the viewer in and sustains the mystery through the film’s closing moments. I enjoyed her co-stars’, Dave Davis and Alexandria DeBerry, work as well. They raise the characters above what could easily have been stereotypical and added to the gratification of the film.

PRESENCE features some impressive production values. The yacht looks like a million bucks. The location limits costume choices, and is effective. The special and visual effects look great and are delightfully designed to serve the narrative and fit the location. There is some nice cinematography that captures both the beauty of the high seas and the dread of the tale.

I did find the opening sequence between New York and her new location prior to her arriving at the yacht a bit choppy. The narrative makes a quick cut to her in the car, the plane, and then walking down the dock to the boat. Clearly the director is trying to present us with Jennifer’s state of mind but it might have been integrated more stylistically. There is a quality to the director’s work in setting up his tale that almost feels like director Nicolas Roeg’s work, but not quite. A nice attempt that lacks the gravitas.

The filmmaker makes a major shift in the third act as he reveals what lies at the heart of the drama. He offers the viewer an explanation without filling in all the blanks as to its origins or full  nature of the “presence.” Viewers might be frustrated by that, but in this instance it is totally acceptable. This is Jennifer’s story. As such, we are presented with the why. The other elements are attached to another character and the way the film ends creates the potential for another tale.

Christian Schultz’s PRESENCE is an impressive independent feature that has several elements that provides the look and feel of what one might expect from a studio feature. The film struggles a bit in the beginning to find its gear before it finally settles in and takes the viewer on a compelling ride. The film makes a smooth transition in the third act to a supernatural noir and folds in some thrilling visual and special effects. The strong cast engages the viewer. This is Christian Schultz’s first feature film, an excellent dark journey on the seas, and I look forward to his next film.
