#Kaidun and #alextheverygood together. 💙 Last night, #eristhedestroyer threw Alex off the table in a spat and broke his bad leg. 😿 We didn't sleep at all. Got a few hours this morning after hours at the emergency vet and the took him into our regular vet @harmonyvetcare for surgery. It's ~$1500 between last night and today, then more for aftercare. He's going to need two months of puppy pads, lots of wet food, meds, bandages, and more. 🐱 Even if we'd had pet insurance, it wouldn't cover this. He's been limping since we got him. Insurance doesn't cover pre-existing conditions, so why bother having it? My poor Alex. He doesn't deserve this. #alextheverygood update: he is misererable. Absolutely dejected. 😿 Won't drink, gums are a bit cold. Gets up sometimes to try to wander but can't- he's a bit drugged. I have a heating pad under him that I cycle off and on, and @purrlipurrs on Relaxed, no meows, so maybe he'll chill a little. Alex the Very Good is not impressed with the current garden offerings. This is all that's left from the old apartment. There is no side yard to put these in, nor will they grow indoors adequately. It isn't hot enough inside, so they go dormant. There is little grass here, so I brought some for Alex... but... he has a Dissatisfied with all this rock and concrete. And the birds. At @houndsmeow today, we got there a bit late (around 11:30ish), but WOW! what a haul! This is what remains AFTER I gave a friend some dog food samples and @harmonyvetcare some goodies! 🐱 We actually have two more cases of wet food on backorder, so imagine those here, too! For all that, I spent less than $200- AND @houndsmeow donates a portion of proceeds to pet pantries as well! Double win! This is a story about #eristhedestroyer and #kaidunthegrey . Mostly, it's about Eris. 🐱 Eris is a cat we got at 6 weeks, if that. She was abandoned in a cat carrier with a sibling, on a freezing February night, with no blankie, in an open field near a @communitysteppingstonesfl . We took her in on #ValentinesDay . She was always a grumpy, needy, scared cat who couldn't walk right. She needed surgery on one hip... and now needs it on the other hip. We can't afford it. The first was thousands. We manage her pain, though... 🖤 At 20 months now, she still madly suckles like a newborn kitten on any fuzzy tummy-like surface. But otherwise? She's MEAN. AGGRESSIVE. BITEY. HATEFUL. HATE. FULL. We have to lock her in the bathroom for "calm down time" because unprovoked, she will lash out and jump up our leg and bite and claw and slash. HATEFUL. 😾 Even as part of the #MaineCoonMafia , #alextheverygood could only do so much because she would get grumpy and attack him, too. Just before Alex died, we went to @humanesocietytampabay and got Kaidun. He was the same age as Eris and had been there for two months. 😿 She hated him. HATED him. Bullied him relentlessly for the first month! Territorial! Being replaced! I am HER MOMMY ONLY!!! 😾 ... and now... she loves him. 💜 Plays with him every moment. 🧶 Can't be far from him. 🌿 Her behavior towards us has changed, too. #AlextheVeryGood update: I am devastated. 🖤 Some hours after the surgery, he slipped into sepsis. He slipped away by the next day. We tried to keep him comfortable and took him to the emergency vet for confirmation. His liver was failing, and his blood sugar had fallen from a cat's typical ~120-140 to only 20. He was hypothermic despite being on the heating pad. There was absolutely no way to save him. Even if I had taken him to the vet hours after the surgery, it would likely have been too late. 💙 This is an uncommon outcome. We don't know what happened, and never will. Bloodwork is always done before surgery to make sure a cat is healthy enough for it. It might be that the cancer had already spread without enough time to show on bloodwork. We just don't know. We let him go. The emergency vets carried him outside to the grassy area, sheltered from onlookers, so he could be in a place he liked to be. We stayed with him, of course. 😿 I don't know what else we could have done. Shipping may be delayed. Right now I just Can't. Squeaky Mouse, the General Squeak, is pretty happy at her new place. She loves the outdoors with the opossums and the raccoons, and loves tanking the boycats that hang around. She may be half their size, but that's only an advantage to her! 😸 She misses her Raptorcat though, and won't deal with Eris at all. #eristhedestroyer learned too much from #generalsqueaks as a kitten, and now she's a territorial fighting machine. Alex is home from @gandyanimalhospital The news is not excellent. 🖤 Since we got him, he has had a walk like an armadillo. He falls off things and won't use cat stairs. We got a lower couch for him and all future elderly cats. But he limps sometimes and is clearly nipping us in pain if we pet him too much. Some cats get like that‐ they get oversensitive. But it looks like his bad leg isn't just an old injury. 😿 It's a bone tumor. He also has old fractures in his spine. Not surprising, since he was almost dead when we got him. We take the ones nobody wants... 🦁 Today was $700. I don't know how to afford it or what tomorrow's results will bring us. We're waiting on some labs. Alex got treats and wet food when he got home. Now he's chilling out on the floor. 🐱 This just after we had to put Seraph to sleep last Thursday. She had kidney failure after being treated for thyroid disease for a long time, over a year. Look at those disgruntled birds! From yesterday. They were screaming at Alexander the Very Good to leave them alone, but Alex was more interested in snuffling through leaves to find some grass to much on. He can't see very well with cataracts amd has some bone issues that keep him from jumping properly. 🐱 He once walked within a metre of a baby bird in the yard and flopped down near them. Didn't see them at all! hahahha But those poor cedarwings couldn't know that... and they'd be defenseless if Alex was a healthy cat. Please don't let your cats wander outside. We need our bird populations. 🐦 Speaking of, I just dropped $100 on their special diet food last night. Fish free, grain free, so his skin won't bother him and the cats won't get UTIs.
