Buss's translation of Chapter 51 includes an aside that was omitted from the older translation:

The purchaser of the vegetable garden, having paid the full amount for it, could not resell at the price he wanted; so, while waiting for a rise in prices that was bound, sooner or later, to more than compensate him for past losses and the capital which he had tied up, he made do with renting the plot to some market gardeners for the sum of five hundred francs a year.

This was money invested at half a per cent, which is not much nowadays when so many people invest it at fifty and still complain that the returns are poor.

Conversely, there is a later part where it is briefer than the older translation, whose author appears to have got a bit carried away:

Quand ce ne serait que pour cela qu'il garde l'Algérie, j'en féliciterais le gouvernement, quoiqu'elle nous coûte un peu cher.

...if Algiers were good for nothing but to furnish the means of carrying so admirable an idea into practice, it would be an acquisition well worthy of struggling to obtain. Though it certainly does cost France somewhat dear to assert her rights in that uncivilized country.

I should congratulate it on keeping Algieria, if only for that reason, even though the cost is a little excessive.

Fearing her lover (Maurice Ronet) has dumped her for another woman, Jeanne Moreau wanders the rain-soaked streets of Paris looking for some sign he hasn’t. Meanwhile, he’s murdered her husband and, after going back to retrieve the evidence, gotten trapped in an elevator while two young delinquents (Georges Poujouly and Yori Bertin) tool around in his stolen car. That’s the fatalistic rhythm of Louis Malle’s first fiction feature, ELEVATOR TO THE GALLOWS (1958, TCM and Criterion Channel). The film is a pretty amazing accomplishment, from Moreau’s unvarnished performance to Henri Decae’s low-key lighting and Miles Davis’ innovative, improvised jazz score. For most of its running time, Malle weaves a powerful spell as the characters get caught up in the web of their own mistakes, from Moreau’s mistaking the identity of the man driving Ronet’s car to the young couple blundering into murder. His work here bridges the fatalism of French Poetic Realism and film noir with the off-the-cuff aesthetics of the French New Wave, though it’s a little too glossy to fit seamlessly with the early works of Truffaut and Godard. There’s also a lot of social commentary, with Ronet a veteran who served in Indochina, his boss an arms dealer and the young hoodlum concerned about being sent to Algieria. Class and social hypocrisy come under fire when a pompous assistant DA investigates the murder at a motel (the French version, which is tres luxe), interviewing a female celebrity trying to keep her tryst there secret and a young gay couple (one played by gay actor Jean-Claude Brialy early in his career). ELEVATOR TO THE GALLOWS is an amazing juggling act, and even if Malle lets some balls drop at the finish (too many logical leaps), it can’t erase the sheer beauty of Moreau’s rain-soaked walk as Davis’ trumpet wails on the soundtrack.

829) Algerian Muslim Scouts (SMA; الكشافة الإسلامية الجزائرية, al-Kaššāfa al-ʾIslāamiyya al-Ǧazāʾiriyya, Scouts Musulmans Algériens, Algierscy Skauci Muzułmańscy) - narodowe stowarzyszenie skautowe w Algierii. SMA ma 24 750 członków od 2011 r. Skauting w Algierii rozpoczął się formalnie około 1911 r.,ale skauting został oficjalnie założony we francuskiej Algierii w 1935 r., wprowadzony przez algierskiego skautera Mohameda Bourasa z oddziałem w Algierze zwanym „al Falah”. Następnie połączyły się z nimi inne sekcje: w Miliana sekcja „Ibn Khaldoun” i inne w Constantine, Mostaganem, Blida, Sétif, Tizi Ouzou, Batna i Guelma. Z inicjatywy Bourasa utworzono ligę harcerzy muzułmańską algierską, która w lipcu 1939 r. uzyskała aprobatę rządu Frontu Ludowego. Zachęcony przez reformistów Oulémasa ruch propagował idee patriotyczne, był kierowany przez nacjonalistycznych wodzów i prowadził wiele demonstracji, jak ta z 8 maja 1945 r., podczas której zginął Bouzid Chaal, młody harcerz. Wielu harcerzy wzięło wtedy udział w wojnie o niepodległość, na wezwanie mudżahedinów. Algieria została członkiem Światowej Organizacji Ruchu Skautowego w 1963 roku. Członkowie są aktywnie zaangażowani w krajowe projekty budowlane i społecznościowe. Zbudowali szkoły, ulepszyli drogi, posadzili drzewa i prowadzili kampanie analfabetyzmu. Motto Skauta to كن مستعداً ( Kun Mustaʿiddan, Bądź przygotowany) po arabsku i Sois Prêt po francusku. Rzeczownik określający pojedynczego skauta to po arabsku كشَّاف (Kaššāf). Skaut nazywa się Askuti w języku berberyjskim. Godło skauta zawiera elementy i kolorystykę flagi Algierii. Ma również półksiężyc islamu.
