Global Reading Challenge: 109/200

A personal reading project, where I endeavour to read a book from each of the 193 United Nations member states plus 7 extra* ones. My main goal is to have fun and to learn, but I do have rules for myself:

The book should be fiction, and preferably a novel. I allow plays and poetry, but non-fiction only as the very last resort

The author should have the nationality of their country. If they have lived a good portion of their life there and genuinely represent the local culture, then it's ok if they've been born somewhere else

I want to read books that represent the local literary tradition. Preferably a "classic", a book that illustrates the local culture, or a book that is famous within the country. I avoid popular and contemporary fiction, and books that play outside of the country.

*Extra states have been determined based on UNESCO membership and personal interest where I want to read more books from. This is not a political statement.

5 good things that happened in 2020

although covid fucked with my semester abroad, i was still able to live in a beautiful, brand new city for almost 5 months

i moved in with three wonderful people including two of my best friends in the world this autumn

being back in edinburgh in september while cinemas were still open and getting a taste of how hogwild @skinks and i are going to get once we’re able to go and see films together in the dark, huge on the reg

got through the last first semester of my MA and did really well despite distance learning

and hmm don’t know if this fits but so much of the goodness i experienced in 2020 had to do with food. moving in with 5 total strangers in a foreign country and going into lockdown almost immediately and creating a sense of community in our janky kitchen, making insane amounts of pasta from scratch and hanging it to dry all over the flat. cementing a new friendship by being taught how to make challah. my sister trying out new cocktails on my parents and me every other day during the summer, and happy buzzed late night conversations. eating cherry tomatoes off the vine with my mum in her experimental lockdown vegetable patch. sharing a home-cooked meal almost every night with my current flatmates and feeling warm and looked after. not being able to go home for christmas and all of our families bombarding us with goodies to show love and make sure we’re taken care of. sorry to be cringe on main, but little acts of love in the everyday are all that matter to me anymore!!

At some point have huge argument with my brother, it went like this: He came home from work and I was sitting watching Breaking Bad, he asks, “Have you been like that all day?” I either took it in the wrong way or picked up on a sly dig. It was probably me, but at this point I was pretty self-conscious and worried about going back to China and whether or not I would have a job back there. Was getting surprisingly pissed off with my brother mentioning his work, felt like an affront to me. Weird. He goes crazy (he has a short fuse), punching a wall, ready to fight me. My mum is pretty upset. A few days later I go into his room and try to patch things up. Turns into a deeper chat. He feels like I haven’t been a good brother to him, he gives the example of not looking out for him on his first days of school. I say I’m sorry, it’s because I’m a bit scared and insecure. In retrospect I regret a little laying so much weakness on the table, seems his interactions/ways of acting around me have changed a bit. Still not sure how I feel about it all. Considered getting a gold tooth with Matthew. Play with cats, enjoying them more and more. Rave in Dalston, good music from Asia and beyond. Looking at magazines. Not doing much work at all. Being out and about instead. Go to Norfolk. It’s beautiful, but get way too drunk on first night, sick everywhere, wake up naked in sick. Massive fucking shitshow. Majority of people there have no choice but to act weirdly around me now, which is understandable. Still some nice aspects. One girl there surely hates me a lot. Tate Modern. Art stuff by self is good. Corsica Studios, semi-art, semi-music event. Mr. Bao for first time of many. Radio in Tottenham. Take drugs. Pubs. Drive to Asda with brother to stock up on food. It’s March and the reality of the pandemic is hitting. More canal cycling. First and only group chat on Zoom. BH Funk. Probably have taken cocaine and messaged one of three or four girls numerous times by now. If there’s one, in the cold light of day, horrible and disgusting thing I’ve done too much this year it’s this. Incessant messaging of poor girls that I know will react (although increasingly they don’t, I manage to alienate even close friends in this way). Southbank and The Mall with Nick. More and more exercise, running, weights and yoga with my brother. Sadie Coles. Nick, Central London. Gucci Mane. Hampstead Heath more because Ludo and his flatmates are nearby. Ludo’s now house more for days and nights of you guessed it. Borough Market more, with Emma. Alexandra Palace walk and famous sandwiches after. Tate Britian new lights. More time at Muzi’s. Signing up for cycle courier. LYL Radio show. Shave head. Take acid and it hurts my stomach. Camden Arts Centre with Muzi. Christmas party with friends. Birthday. Cake with Muzi, presents and Indian takeaway from family, walk in Vicky Park with Ludo and Karim plus battered sausage and chips. Christmas at home nice and warming meal. Evening to Ludo’s place with more friends. Boxing day with Matthew, pints and then more at his house in Peckham all night long. Next day is tough! Giant turkey sandwiches, turkey soup, turkey curry. 1. Three T20i and three Test matches of ICC World Test Championship series of South Africa's tour of India, which was played from 15 Sep to 23 Oct 2019 in India. Mayank Agarwal, Rohit Sharma, and Viral Kohli are the three different cricketers, who have scored three double centuries in a Test series, details of that are given below.

2. Two Test matches series of Pakistan's tour of Bangladesh which was played from 17 April to 10 May 2015 in Bangladesh. #noromo ship(s): Harry/Ron are the BESTEST of friends and people need to stop forgetting how joined at the hip these two are. They share a brain. Also I love him with Luna because they both genuinely like each other and find each other funny and are both absolutely thrown by the other thinking they’re genuinely funny, which is cute.

crack ship(s): I mean he 100% had a massive crush on Krum but I don’t know if that counts as a crack ship

fav headcanon(s): Ron is the Mom friend. He shows his love by taking care of people. He’s a huge touch guy - he’s constantly giving people hugs, pats on the back, etc. Sometimes when he knows Harry’s feeling down he’ll just shove his way into his bed and cuddle him - it happens even more after the war, and sometimes Harry will just look at Ron and Ron knows that means it’s Hugging Time. They get so comfortable with it that they’ll just sit there in a conversation with someone else with Ron just hanging off Harry and neither of them acting like it’s a big deal.

He learns to love to cook for his family and provide good food for them like his mom did for him. He’s the one that learns most of her recipes and they spent a lot of time together in the kitchen after the war. The only one who can make food as good as their mom, the Weasleys all agree, is Ron - which is good, because Hermione is an abysmal cook.

He’s the one that takes a more active role in taking care of his kids too and the household duties. Not because Hermione won’t, but because her job ends up being so taxing and Ron loves taking care of his family and kids. (He does talk her into setting a strict schedule for herself though. Sundays are family days and unless a new dark wizard is back, she is not allowed to touch any work for the whole day.)

(I could keep going but I’m going to stop myself.)

Peggy Carter:

fav headcanon(s): She 100% played a role in Tony’s life and nothing will tell me otherwise. She was (awkward on and off again) friends with his dad. She was besties with his caretaker/true father figure. She was definitely Aunt Peggy to him and adored him.

But to make a lot of Tony’s characterization and the fact they never see each other in the MCU work, I imagine they had some sort of falling out - either around the time Peggy seemed to have her falling out with Howard or after Howard’s death. Or maybe after Jarvis’s death. I imagine Tony pushed her away and eventually they hardly talked anymore. It’s one of his deepest regrets. He didn’t go to her funeral only because he felt like he didn’t have a right to.

Peggy is a terrible cook but really great at all other household chores and super handy. She refuses to call anyone for help when things break and will get them back in working shape through the power of her will alone. When she lives in the women’s apartment building, she gains a reputation as the person you should call if your fridge breaks down or you need to hang a new shelf or whatever. She gets a lot of requests to come fix things and she always does. Sometimes the other women try to pay her and she always refuses, though sometimes she’ll accept her pay in the form of homemade treats. One time she got a full pot roast for fixing someone’s heater. Usually, she just likes the women to keep her company and chat with her while she works.

Raven Reyes

fav headcanon(s): Raven spent a lot of nights growing up over at Finn’s place instead of her’s to avoid her mom. His parents fully accepted her and treated her as one of their own, always willing to let her stay there, though there was a lot of tension between them after Finn got locked up. Her mom would often trade her rations away for booze, so Finn usually split his rations with her growing up. Raven also started offering to fix things for people for payment, even before she was officially working as an Ark mechanic - usually for food. If you had something broken that you knew the Ark government wouldn’t give a crap about, you knew to go to Raven Reyes, who’d probably fix it better than anyone else the Ark would’ve sent anyways.

She and Murphy end up bonding a lot on the Ring about their mothers and their childhoods. They talk a lot about what it was like to have to scrape by for food when your own mother didn’t seem concerned with feeding you. They relate to each other in a way none of the other Ark-borne kids on the Ring do. 

She has nightmares of ALIE long after the AI is gone, horrible dreams where she watches her own body move without her and do terrible things to the people she loves. She stops wearing the color red for awhile, even though it used to be her favorite color. 

Will Turner

fav headcanon(s): Will accepts his new duty as ferryman for the dead and never wavers in it, and so he never is cursed or starts growing things out of him and yes I am ignoring the movie that shall not be named because it’s BULLSHIT. He is a kind ferryman. Davy Jones is terrifying, the sailors say. He’ll drag you to his locker as you scream for mercy and trap you in never-ending torture. But then when sailors die at see, a young man with kind eyes and a soft smile approaches them instead. “It’s time to move on now,” he tells them, and when the sailors say they don’t want to, he asks, “Are you scared of death? It’s nothing to fear really. But there is another option if you’d like.”

No one is bound to his service. They can stay on his crew for as long as they’d like, and when they’ve finally had enough and they tell him they’re ready to move on, he let’s them. 

Calypso is well pleased with him. She comes to visit him often and he always has tea (and rum) on hand for her when she does. They usually gossip about Jack.

Summary: After a breakup, your celebrity of a best friend brings you to a gathering filled with her fellow celebrity friends. What you did not expect was to meet the love of your life.

Love is a bitch. No one can deny this statement. But to you love was being extra bitchy. The asshat you once called the love of your life broke up with you over a fucking text message. No phone call no nothing. Just plain lousy text. Everything was fine the night before. It was date night and you were doing the usual. Movies, pizza, and sex.

But you woke up to a message that wrecked your entire being. It’s been around a month now and still not over the asshat. Almost 2 years of life were ruined. A time that you could never get back. If only you had a time-turner but such things did not exist.

“Alrighty bitch, it’s time for you to leave this room and get some fucking sunlight.” Your best friend Ali said. Or as the rest of the world knows her as Snail. And yes your best friend is the super talented and amazing Snail. Not many people know about your friendship since Ali likes to keep her celebrity life separated from her private life.

“No, let me die here all alone.”

Suddenly cold air met your legs causing you to curl up. It was no use to try and argue with Ali. She wasn’t going to leave once she got what she wanted. And right now what she wanted was for you to get out of bed and socialize.

“(y/n) when was the last time you left this house besides going to class.?” She said but you just turned on your stomach with your head under your pillow. “Answer me now bitch!”

“I don’t know? Now please let me be.”

“If you are not showered and dressed by the time I’m done cooking breakfast, I burn all of your signed Harry Potter books.”

At the sound of burn and Harry Potter, you flew off the bed and ran towards the bathroom. Let’s just say you had a tiny obsession with HP.

“I shall be out in a jiffy. I LOVE YOU SO MUCH BOO, please don’t touch my babies” You yelled turning the shower.

Sadly you had to admit to the fact that a shower was much needed. It has probably been more than 4 days since your last shower. But in your defense, you had all online classes this semester and there was no need to go out into the real world. Finally showered and dressed, you headed out to your kitchen not knowing that you’d soon be meeting the love of your life.

“What the hell?” Rubbing the spot that she hit you did nothing to ease the pain. Anyone in (Y/N) place would react almost the same way when you are dragged into a room filled with celebrities. One of them being Kim Taehyung.

“Why can’t you act like a normal human being,” Ali asked you while slowly dragging you over to the food table. The food table was the only place that Ali thought of that could help distract you.

“I am acting like a REGULAR POOR human who has never met a celebrity.” You said. Grabbing a plate you thought of all the food you could pile on not caring that Lee Kwang Soo aka the Giraffe was a few feet away from you.

Ali turned around a gave you her famous WTF look.

“Excuse you! Then what am I? An effing couch?”

“Nah you are more like that annoying booger that’s too far up my nose that I can’t reach so it’s stuck forever.”

This was the moment Ali knew she should’ve just left you to rot. Ignoring you, she started to look the reason you had decided to come to this lil gathering that she had no idea what it was for.

“Stop stuffing your face with meatballs!” Taking out her phone Ali sent the message that would put in motion her plan.

After swallowing a whole meatball you replied, “They’re my weakness, wait where are you going! Don’t leave me...”

She left you all alone surrounded by a bunch of wild celebrities. What a best friend you thought. How can she leave you in a place where you clearly don’t belong. Well, at least it was next to the food table.

“Hi.”

You almost choked at the deep ass voice that came from behind. Scared that you may be thrown out you turned around. Why? Well, your dumb brain didn’t know but you were still scared. Standing in his full glory was the one and only KIM TAEHYUNG. You were shocked, to say the least. Why would THE Kim Taehyung be talking to you?

Looking behind you to make sure it was really you who he was talking to, you point to yourself mouthing ‘ME’

“Yes, you. I’m Kim Taehyung. You’re (Y/N) right?” He extended his hand out for you to shake but you being your dumb self just stared at it still not processing what’s happened. Why would someone like him be talking to thing like you?

“H-how do you know my n-name?” You stuttered. Really (Y/N), stuttering in front of your celebrity crush you thought while mentally stabbing yourself. Hoping to just disappear. Why did you have to listen to Ali and leave your precious bed? Oh, that’s right the fate of your babies was at stake. Damn you, Ali. But you still love the hoe. Even though you may be embarrassing yourself, how many people say they’ve met one of BTS’s visual kings and knew who you are?

“Snail talks about you all the time. Would you like to take a seat and maybe we could get to know each other?”

Still, in an idiotic daze, you managed to nod your head and follow him to an empty chair. But obviously taking you meatballs with you. You’d remember to thank Ali later on. For the remainder of the gathering was spent with the two of you talking. The rest of the world was blurred out.

2 months have passed and they have been the best months of your sad life. Ever since that wonderful meeting, you and Tae have gotten a lot closer. And yes you were at the Tae base. How did all of this happen? Hell if you knew but you wouldn’t change it. For once you felt loved and appreciated. The only sad thing was you didn’t know if he felt the same way as you. The moment you too get too close or too flirty he distances himself as if he regrets it. Confronting him would only mess things up so you’d rather just keep everything the way it is.

You didn’t bother to change out of your Stich onesie. Tae has seen you in a worst state before. Plus it was close to 11 pm the diner would be mostly empty. You headed out after stuffing some cash and your ID into your phone case. Purses weren’t your thing.

The night was calm and peaceful with a light breeze blowing every once in a while. Nights like these relaxed you. You just loved walking around with music played through your airpods. The diner that you’d meet Tae at was just a short distance away from the apartment building you lived at. With the ring of the bell announcing your arrival to the diner you take a seat. Unknowing to you, the asshat of your ex was seated a few booths away and saw you walk in. Being the idiot he, going up to you to try and convince you to get back together was his brilliant plan. The reason behind your break up was a simple fact he was bored of you. But for some fuckboish reason, he wanted you back.

Sitting In peace scrolling through your Tumblr you waited for Tae to arrive. What you didn’t expect was for Hyun-Soo to take a sit in front of you. Thank the heavens that Tae had arrived the moment Hyun-Soo took a seat but he decided to wait and see what he wanted before making his presence know.

“Babe I missed you so much,” Hyun-Soo said with the attempt to hold your hand. The action made Taehyung’s blood boil. No one was allowed to touch you. You are his girl.

“What are you doing here?” You asked him appalled to see him sitting there acting as if nothing happened between the two of you.

“I want us to get back together silly” He smiled at you his famous boyish smile. A smile that no longer had an effect on you. These days the only smile that makes your heart race was a cute boxy smile. A smile that only Kim Taehyung could pull of.

“You think I’m stupid or something? You broke up with me over a fucking text after 2 fucking years of dating. Now you think a lousy ‘I miss you” will make me forget you?” You harshly said removing your hand from the table since he tried to once again take a hold of them. The only person you wanted to hold hands with wasn’t here yet. Or so you thought.

At this moment Tae thought it was time to make himself present.

“Babe who is this?” He said in that sweet deep voice.

Babe? Did he just call you babe??? The word babe was the only thing going through your mind. You missed the mine stare off Tae and Hyun-Soo had due to your mini fangirl moment.

“Who the fuck are you to be calling (Y/N) babe? Only I can call her that!” Hyun-Soo exclaimed getting off the booth to stand in front of Taehyung. They were around the same height but one could easily see that Tae would win if a fist were to be thrown. It’d be a hot thing to see but you didn’t want to see Tae engage in such things.

“Ah! You’re the asshat right?” Tae said grabbing your hand and pulling you next to you.

“What did you just call me?”

“My apologies, it’s just that my lovely GIRLFRIEND (Y/N) only refers to you like that.” As he said that Tae wrapped an arm around your waist. You honestly had no clue what was happening since all you could think about was the fact that Tae had his arm around you and call you his girlfriend.

“Let’s cut this short since I would really like to eat some pancakes with my girl and your presence is ruining my appetite. Leave (Y/N) alone. You missed your shot and thank you for that because I can now spend the rest of my life with the sweetest crackhead I know and love very much. Plus we are to Gucci for you.” With that Tae took you to the back of the diner where no one would disturb you.

Finally coming to your sense you let go of Tae’s hands.

“Sweetest Crackhead? Tae you didn’t have to do that for me.” You said looking down blushing like a mad woman.

“For you, I’d do anything and what I said back there is true. I know I’ve been weird around you lately and it may be to soon to say I love you but it’s the truth. I’d love for you to allow me to be part of your life.” He said taking your hand back into his. The place they belong in.

“I love you too.”

Taking advantage to the fact that you were seated beside each other Tae leans in and gives you the best kiss you’d ever experienced. For the first time ever you feel 100% happy. Life was dull but that all changed thanks to Taehyung.

“I never told you this but Snail was the one who suggested I’d get to know you,” Tae said

Looks like you’ll have to apologize to Snail for all the times you called her a hoe.

About Sansa, Jon, and apples Part I

I saw people posting about Sansa’s name and what it means on Tumblr yesterday and decided to post this bit about Sansa and apples and her connection to Jon. There could very well be more than one inspiration behind Sansa’s name but there exists a Sansa apple, which I have heard kind of tastes like Royal Gala apples, but I have never eaten one, so cannot tell (never seen one here in England either).

Plus it is apple-picking season, so why not!!!

Anyways, talking about apples, reminded me of this picture from that old Time magazine photo shoot that some of the GOT cast did a while back.

Here is Sophie Turner with a green apple (and she appears to have taken a bite off) in her hand and while others in the fandom have dissected the many meanings of this, here is what I found while I was re-reading A Storm of Swords. (if others have also talked about this, then oh well, another drop of water to the ocean and all that then) Part I will talk about Sansa’s connections to apples and Part II will feature Jon’s connections to apples. This post got longer than I planned.

There were three Tyrell cousins, Megga and Alla and Elinor, all close to Sansa’s age. Buxom Lady Janna was Lord Tyrell’s sister, and wed to one of the green-apple Fossoways; dainty, bright-eyed Lady Leonette was a Fossoway as well, and wed to Ser Garlan. Septa Nysterica had a homely pox-scarred face but seemed jolly. Pale, elegant Lady Graceford was with child, and Lady Bulwer was a child, no more than eight.

-Sansa I, ASOS

House Fossoway, sworn to House Tyrell, has two branches, the red apple Fossoways, and the green apple Fossoways. This Lady Janna is married to Ser Jon Fossoway, who is called Ser Jon of the green apple.

So Sansa is eating a green apple and there exists a Ser Jon of the green apple???!!! Are you kidding me!

In fact, this Ser Jon of the green apple first makes his appearance in a Sansa chapter!

“the freerider Lothor Brune, who’d cut his way through half a hundred Fossoway men-at-arms to capture Ser Jon of the green apple and kill Ser Bryan and Ser Edwyd of the red, thereby winning himself the name Lothor Apple-Eater.”

-Sansa VIII, ACOK

(This Lothor Brune is a free-rider, employed under Petyr Baelish and is connected to Sansa too. He once saved Sansa from the groping hands of Marillion, when she was in the Eyrie, that happens later in ASOS.)

Dainty and bright-eyed Lady Leonette is married to Ser Garlan Tyrell, who is called The Gallant and is a nod to Jon Snow. @shinynewrevulsions has written a meta on Jon Snow and Garlan Tyrell parallels.

Lady Leonette belongs to which branch of House Fossoway is unknown. So she could be a green apple Fossoway or a red apple Fossoway.

Pale and elegant Lady Graceford’s full name is Lady Alyce Graceford and she is pregnant. Alyce sounds like Alys, which reminds me of Alys Karstark, who is a Sansa stand-in. 

(Someone in the fandom wrote a meta on Sansa/Alys Karstark parallels, but I cannot find it. However, there is plenty of parallels between the two.)

Lady Graceford is described to be pale and elegant, words that are often used to describe Sansa.

This Lady Alyce Graceford shows up again later in ASOS...during Joffrey’s wedding. Tyrion and Sansa are sitting next to Ser Garlan Tyrell and Lady Leonette Fossoway at Joffrey’s wedding and Tyrion wonders this about Sansa...

“Does she wish it were her in Margaery’s place?” Tyrion frowned. Even a child should have better sense. He turned away, wanting distraction, but everywhere he looked were women, fair fine beautiful happy women who belonged to other men.”

-Tyrion VIII, ASOS

I think, “Everywhere he looked were women” also includes the woman sitting next to Tyrion, Sansa, who despite being married to him, belongs to someone else (IDK Jon??). 

“And there was one woman, sitting almost at the foot of the third table on the left...the wife of one of the Fossoways, he thought, and heavy with his child. Her delicate beauty was in no way diminished by her belly, nor was her pleasure in the food and frolics. Tyrion watched as her husband fed her morsels off his plate. They drank from the same cup, and would kiss often and unpredictably. Whenever they did, his hand would gently rest upon her stomach, a tender and protective gesture.”

Sitting almost at the foot of the table reminds me of how Jon was made to sit at the lower benches in the Great Hall of Winterfell during the welcome feast for King Robert Baratheon. The third table may be alluding to Jon being the third child of Rhaegar. Sitting on the left side to Joffrey who is king and newly married so gets the highest seat of honor, also denotes the place where the queen resides. Joffrey is a foil to Jon. So this Lady sitting to Joffrey’s left denotes where Sansa might be sitting when she marries King Jon. (Tyrion and Sansa were sitting to Joffrey’s right)

This pregnant woman is married to one of the Fossoways, does not say whether it is a green apple Fossoway or red apple Fossoway. She is seated close to the Tyrells, Margaery’s cousins are sitting nearby. So I think, this pregnant lady is possibly the same Lady Alyce Graceford that we meet in Sansa I ASOS, considering the people she hangs out with are the same in both chapters. Her beauty in Tyrion VIII ASOS is described to be delicate, and kind of sounds similar to elegant and beautiful, all things that aptly describe Sansa.

But think how sweet and romantic this pair is, where the husband is feeding her morsels off his plate and they are drinking from the same cup...huh where have we seen that before????

YUP!! When they reunite in S0604 in Castle Black!! Oh apologies, did I mean Jon and Sansa??? Oops, I guess I did. 

Sharing a drink is a very common wedding tradition in many cultures. The Scottish have the wedding Quaich ceremony where couples drink from a double-handed cup. I am sure other cultures have similar things but yeah sharing a drink is such a married people trope!

Plus I can totally imagine Jon doing all those things to a pregnant Sansa. 

Anyways back to Sansa I ASOS chapter, because there is more..

The song the Bear and the Maiden Fair is first sung in this chapter. Sansa and Jon are the Maiden and Bear in the song.

Following this Sansa chapter is Jon I, ASOS and here is what we find...

This is the chapter where Jon has been captured by the wildlings and taken to meet with Mance Rayder, the King beyond the Wall...here is how his tent is described.

There was no doubting which tent was the king’s. It was thrice the size of the next largest he’d seen, and he could hear music drifting from within. Like many of the lesser tents, it was made of sewn hides with the fur still on, but Mance Rayder’s hides were the shaggy white pelts of snow bears.

Jon I, ASOS

Jon Snow is the snow bear and the rightful King of the 7Ks. (It is known.lol)

In this tent is “a pregnant woman stood over a brazier cooking a brace of hens”.

“The good woman at the brazier,” Mance Rayder went on, “is Dalla.” The pregnant woman smiled shyly. “Treat her like you would any queen, she is carrying my child.”

So pregnant Lady Alyce Graceford, who appears to be a Sansa stand-in, from Sansa I, ASOS, and is married to one of the apple Fossoways, mirrors the shy Dalla, who is pregnant with a King’s child and ought to be treated like a queen in Jon I ASOS. Lady Graceford also sits on the left of King Joffrey, who is a Jon foil, in Tyrion VIII, ASOS, the place usually occupied by the queen.

I like this subtext very much.

Also, Mance Rayder’s physical description also has echoes of Jon’s physique in it.

“The King-beyond-the-Wall looked nothing like a king, nor even much a wildling. He was of middling height, slender, sharp-faced, with shrewd brown eyes and long brown hair that had gone mostly to grey. There was no crown on his head, no gold rings on his arms, no jewels at his throat, not even a gleam of silver. He wore wool and leather, and his only garment of note was his ragged black wool cloak, its long tears patched with faded red silk.”

-Jon I, ASOS

Jon is of middling height, slender and graceful and quick with eyes that hardly miss a thing. The black wool cloak patched with faded red silk is an obvious nod to the red and black colors of House Targaryen and thus to Jon. Hair gone mostly to grey is a node to the grey colors of House Stark. Again a nod to Jon, who is of the House Stark. The Black also denotes Jon and him being the black bastard of the Wall as part of the Night’s Watch. The “nor even much a wildling” may allude to Jon trying to infiltrate the wildlings and pretending to become a wildling in the process. However, he neither looks like one nor does he ends up becoming one.

Since all is subtext, I think this right here is actually meant to describe Jon and not Mance. The title of the King-beyond-the-Wall is such a clever way of calling Jon, the King, because if you think about it, when you are actually in the far North, past the Wall, and you are looking south, anything South of the Wall, can also be described as beyond the wall. And who is the rightful King of this side (Southern side) of the wall? Jon Snow of Houses Targaryen and Stark. 

Moving on, in this Jon I ASOS chapter, we first get to listen to the song The Dornishman’s Wife, and that is being sung by “a grey-haired man in a tattered cloak of black and red sat cross-legged on a pillow, playing a lute and singing..”

The grey-haired man in a cloak of black and red is another nod to Jon of the Houses Stark and Targaryen, who is also a Dornishman. A Dornishman’s wife can also be called a Dornishwoman. In fact, one of the only two times the word “Dornishwoman” shows up in the text in a POV chapter in ASOIAF, is in a Sansa chapter, Sansa IV, ASOS, talking about Ellaria Sand, paramour to the Red Viper of Dorne, Prince Oberyn. The other time is in the epilogue of ADWD.

Anyways, I think, there exists many subtextual clues that connect Jon and Sansa via apples or rather House Fossoway and may foreshadow them marrying and becoming King and Queen of the 7Ks and having a baby (or babies)!!! Here’s to at least some of that in S8!

(I am a quarter way through ASOS, and hopefully, if I can find any more apple connections, I will add on to this post. If others find some, would love to read about them. One thing that always strikes me is the sheer number of parallels that exist between Sansa I and Jon I chapters in ASOS, later chapters of these two also have quite a lot of clues).
