my first entry to this year's Spectember with some redesigns of what i believe to be the first speculative critters Ive ever made. Entry prompt inspired by zenwyrmmess and memociownking and their own promptlist.
And it is technically my first public drawing with clip studio paint. Gifted to me by my wonderful friend bonechimes678. Everyone go folllow them all!
These guys and their entire world was made in direct inspiration of Wayne barlowe's novel Expedition, which i found through the documentary. As a re-upload on youtube. Which would change the trajectory of my entire life.
These alien pentapods hail from a planet named Emenos. A somewhat cold and dry world around the size of mars orbiting a g-type main sequence star. The surface is dominated by polar icecaps and a single super-continent. The closest Emenos has to terrestrial vertebrates are these 6 eyed pentapods that use an extra-oral tendril to bring food to it's real mount found at the base of the neck
On the left is a nimble tripedal herbivore from the western side of the supe-continent. Despite their tripedal stance, theyre able to make sharp turns while running. Due in part to their shortened front limbs being repurposed as rudders. And Their spoon-shaped middle foot having a great range of traction to prevent falling over.
On the right is a far larger grazing herbivore native to the northern part of the planet's continental peninsula and the top left land bridge. Despite their appearance they are keen burrowers. Using every appendage they have including their heads to dig burrows for hibernation. A hibernation that lasts so long it can cause small mosses to grow on their backs.

KK I can't remember if I read this on tumblr or in Astounding Stories of Super-Science (I cannot stress how much I doubt this option) or somewhere else entirely.
there is a short scifi story telling the story of how humans learned that hard way that colonizing alien planets is...a bad fucking idea.
Okay. they find a planet, they think it's empty. They start colonizing. Planting crops. I think there were ruins. Paintings or carvings of trees maybe.
They settle down.
And then it turns out that the native inhabitants are a species that go through different kinds of metamorphosies and go dormant for years at a time. And become part of the soil.
So by tilling the land, planting crops, building structures, they were massacreing entire generations of people.
where the fuck did I read this story and what is it called.

fuck it heres a map of what Irou, the homeworld of the Ikleud and Ruuik, looks like.
The Ikleudd hail from southwest Intrapa while the Ruuikk hail from Central north Intrapa
Also for a quick explanation on why the plant life of this world is yellow-brown Is because the main "flora" use Carotenoids to photosynthesize and the planet itself orbiting a K-type main sequence star
Tumblr media
I went as far as drawing Ocean currents (before i knew how they actually worked) and used the Koppen Climate Classification to determine the biomes
Also let me know if i should either explore more about Irou itself first or do it's solar system first and have Irou's exploration in there.
