Just wanna say, I love your tags sm on my post!!! I find it so fun to pull comparisons with both zinnia and volo because they have like. A similar character skeleton. Or whatever that means. They're so different yet their relation to their respective deity definitely feels, as u said, 2 sides of the same coin.

And 100% agree with the last comment- I only started thinking about their similarities when I realized how much of the fandom dislikes zinnia and how much of the fandom likes volo qq

Ahh thank you so much!! I'm so sorry I'm responding to this so late, I am just awful about actually sitting down at a computer lately unless it's for work . . . and my work network doesn't allow me to access tumblr because I'm employed by haters 😔 but I'm glad you appreciated the tags! I remember I was actually a bit hesitant about leaving them because I didn't know if they would be Too Much or not, so I'm glad that wasn't the case, haha.

And yeah, Zinnia and Volo definitely foil each other in many ways. What's really interesting about it as well is that, unlike Volo, Zinnia was actually rebuffed by her deity to her face, when it came to a destiny she was literally raised for, which we know since her flashbacks in her Evolutions episode show that she was training to catch Rayquaza as part of her Lorekeeper destiny since she was a young child:

She could arguably be a little older in that second flashback, but not by much. So Zinnia was raised to be the Lorekeeper since her childhood. Her life's purpose was not only know and be able to pass on the history of her people, but also to be able to mega evolve Rayquaza and, together with it, destroy the meteor that would threaten the planet. She knew that doing this would likely result in her death (indicated at multiple points in her dialogue), but she was so devoted to doing it that she went through it anyway. And she managed part of it; she did manage to summon Rayquaza.

And then . . . Rayquaza rejected her. To her face. In favor of some random (by comparison) kid.

By all accounts, Zinnia had every right to be furious. Her deity has rejected her in favor of some rando when Zinnia devoted her entire life (and was willing to sacrifice her life) to it. But is she furious? Does she take it out on May? No. We know that she's lowkey suicidal (some of her dialogue suggests she's almost hoping she'll die in the effort to stop the meteor so that she can be reunited with the original Aster in the afterlife), but she still takes it in stride because the most important thing is that the meteor is stopped. So she helps the rando as much as she can, and then leaves to figure out what she can do with this life she didn't expect to have.

Then, on the opposite end, there's Volo. Volo, as far as we know, was never raised with any special destiny in mind. To be fair, we really don't know anything about Volo's backstory except that it's heavily implied he's a descendant of the Celestica people. But that's it. We're never told that he had a destiny to fulfill alongside Arceus. Instead, Volo himself decided that he was going to summon and meet Arceus, and Volo himself decided he was going to summon and meet Arceus wholly for his own reasons, and Volo himself never actually came face to face with Arceus, and took that as a rejection, and then tried to murder the random kid Arceus chose over it, as if it's that random kid's fault.

It really is the complete opposite in every way. Zinnia had every reason to believe that Rayquaza would agree to work with her, yet when it refused, she took it in stride and did what she could to help. Volo had no reason to believe that Arceus would want to work with him, and when it refused, he absolutely lost his shit and tried to murder a child. There's a reason why Zinnia got closure by forming a sync pair with Rayquaza in Pokemon Masters and why I'm pretty damn sure Volo is not going to get the same treatment with Arceus, lmao.

And don't get me wrong, I love both characters. Personally, I hope Volo never gets better. Don't get me wrong, if his motivation is supposed to be that he wants to make a world where his people and culture were never lost and where Hisui was never colonized, then I do think that's a sympathetic motivation, and certainly I came away from PLA thinking that Kamado was more despicable than Volo, mostly because the game treated Kamado like a sympathetic, misunderstood man despite his blatant bigotry toward the DP clans. But Volo is at his best when he is absolutely off his shits and I want him to stay that way. Like the fact that he actually tried to murder the player is iconic. Love that energy for him. Keep it coming.

But that doesn't change the fact that, yeah, he is off his shits. And any sympathetic motivations we can give him are headcanon because Game Freak didn't feel the need to elaborate. And more importantly (and to the point of your second paragraph), yeah, it really gets me that people are constantly vilifying Zinnia (including downright calling her a villain) for trying to save two worlds and ultimately bowing out gracefully when her destiny was stolen from her, yet fawn all over Volo or Lusamine. I'm sure the fact that Zinnia is a darker skinned woman (as opposed to the the blonde hair and pale skin of the others) has nothing to do with it. [/heavy sarcasm]

The murder of sonic the hedgehog is REALLY good. Its definitely got a lot of love packed into it and it shines through the whole thing. Its a favorite because its a little silly but they still work to take the characters seriously (idk. U can tell the devs really loved doing it. I think its all around a fantastic introduction to the series!)

I’ve been hooked on Sonic from a SUPER early age. Like playing on hand me down consoles and stuff. My favorite game ever was sonic and knuckles or sonic 3 and then it was sonic the fighters. And then every game after that until Sonic The Hedgehog (2006) for the xbox 360 came out and despite the glitches and everything else im sure anyone could tell you about it younger me just found it SO striking. Everything about it. I used to sit and watch all the cutscenes on youtube on the family computer like it was my JOB. Idk where the turning point was I’ve played all the other titles except for a couple here and there more recently but I def think you could start where-ever you want!!!

Theres some games I think most people in the fandom would agree are unplayable or just Bad (for any number of reasons, everyone has their opinions! But think like notoriously bad like sonic boom..or specifically sonic colors nintendo ds version) BUT I’m a firm believer that if Sonic 06 specifically didnt have game breaking issues it would have been a masterpiece (look up project 06…! its a labor of love and it made that game feel like what I thought it did when I was itty bitty and more. Beyond my expectations. Genuinely impressive and really shows how much could have been fixed/polished for gameplay/overall) obviously I’m very biased but 06 is something I’ll never get over and I think more people should see Project 06 because the work put into it is immaculate and really showcases what I loved and still love about that game

The fandubs are good! If you’re looking for more watching stuff instead of playing stuff the original remastered Sonic OVA movie is up on YouTube for free and I think you’d really enjoy that too! There’s some design choices (like knuckles just flying for half the movie/not gliding like he would in later titles) that are more timeline based (like they hadnt gotten a firm grasp in franchise what was what yet etc etc) but it really sticks to that charm that drew me in to begin with so its a 10/10 in my book.

Games I think you could start anywhere you’d like (even if people say you’ve GOTTA play x or y or z or whatever you do what you think you’d like) but as a die hard fan you know I’ve got to mention Sonic Adventure 2 or Heroes or one of those. More ‘recent’ games I’ve really enjoyed that didn’t feel rushed/scrapped halfway through.. Sonic Generations is good, Sonic Unleashed is good (and theres a short film called night of the werehog thats official you could watch!) Frontiers obviously is the best I think we’ve gotten in a while narratively.

And im biased but I really. REALLY like sonic and the black knight. I think it being on the wii was a little bad controls wise but it has some charm! The storybook ones (Sonic & The Secret Rings and Sonic & The Black Knight) were super interesting to me when they came out just because it was a fresh art style lol.. Still very charming to me

The Shadow The Hedgehog game will always hold a special place in my heart and I know you like that guy so if you haven’t checked out that game (it has so many endings.) I think you’d personally love it!!

Other than that I think IDW comics are really great if you can get your hands on em! I don’t read them very often if at all anymore but I keep up to date on new characters in gen (more out of interest for the designs and direction theyre going) but if you EVER get the chance to read the arc with the metal virus you absolutely should. All the comics are great but I think you especially would think that arc in particular is incredible

witch lore!! (nanu and guzma)

true witches are sort of a dying breed. the unfortunate reality is that witches tend to be surrounded by bad luck and tragedy strikes them easily. not even they really know why, some rumor that one witch got the whole lot of them cursed but no one can confirm anything.

as a result many have chosen not to have children to break the cycle or have given up their powers entirely (a very painful and irreversible process). that tends to be the main reason for a scarcity of them.

who is and isn’t a witch isn’t common knowledge. 90% of the time you have to be told or witness something.

many of them have unique/family passed down abilities. the ripley line is pretty strong in general because they never really let go of their powers. they’re one of the oldest witch families, however someone did try to end the family line on multiple occasions.

nanu’s special ability is resistance to damage. he is very hard to kill and that magic literally the only reason he’s still alive. he thinks it’s the magic trying to fight back against the “curse” he’s heard so much about.

it was passed on to guzma, who unfortunately is very much aware that he can take a lot of damage and not die.

augustine, as a “human” (witch) had suffered greatly with no clear answers as to why (his mother hand an affair with a witch, who had died not long after his birth. no one ever taught him about being a witch or could help him because no one had any idea.) his power is a limited psychic ability. it allows him to sense and sometimes get visions of future events-- but only happy ones. this power was likely triggered from years of despair and desperately needing some reminders that life is worth living, that there are things to look forward to. it reminds him, after tragedy, that good things will come in time.

they have familiars!! certain pokemon are familiars that get drawn to witches by fate!! nanu’s is his persian (morticia) and guzma’s is his golisopod (bernadette)!! (bonus, augustine’s first one is an eevee evolved into a sylveon named enjolras, his second is his garchomp named eponine). the familiars tend to assist as guides to young witches and stay with them to be whatever the person needs-- a friend, a sibling, a parental figure.

nymph lore!! (maxie and guzma)

nymphs are a subclass of fae that generally protect whatever they bond to. for example: wood nymph (most common), water nymph (common), and ground nymph (rare). all nymphs are pretty much a blank slate and if they connect to something in nature they take on the features of that thing.

wood nymphs can have several abilities, but for guzma specifically being a half-nymph, he’s got the ability to heal nature to a degree. one could say he has a green thumb, but it’s absolutely a healing/growing touch. he can’t single handedly repair a wasteland in an instant but he can, with prolonged and repeated care help flora grow or recover from disaster. he often smells floral, just slightly, and it tends to attract pollinating bugs. cutiefly love him.

ground nymphs get more interesting defensive abilities. they can harden their bodies and tend to look like a moving marble sculpture if they use this ability and move. harming them in this state is difficult, especially as they are able to alter their bodies to be as hard as diamonds if they want to.

they aren’t really tricksters by nature. they just kinda. vibe. get along with pokemon.

while some can connect to something broadly speaking (the ground, the ocean), some connect to specific locations (a specific forest, a specific lake). not being able to properly redirect your connection to relocate is severely harmful for the nymph, it causes emotional distress and causes a severe sickness that can last for about a month. 

some nymphs have sort of given up due to land development destroying forests and natural areas. they had homes torn down in the name of creating concrete cities, it filled them with despair and resignation. they have, like witches, given up their abilities to become human because they saw no point in being nymphs or making more nymphs when humanity was just going to tear down the natural beauty of the world anyway.

specific character lore for fun!!

yellow’s pikachu?? his name is wes. he’s not even really a pikachu. he’s a mew that thought it would be fun to be a pikachu for a while but then he got carried away. straight up vibing and having a good time though. at this point genuinely forgets he’s not actually a pikachu. has a single brain cell that gets tired easy when it comes to anything other than battle. capable of taking on a human form.

guzma has always been a mama’s boy, but he held her even more dear when he thought his father died. she was the only family he had and he didn’t want to imagine life without her, unfortunately he would have to live that reality.

she did teach him how to play piano though. she was a fairly famous pianist and he wanted to follow in her footsteps for a while. he doesn’t play the piano for others often, for him to do so is an act of trust and intimacy. playing it is bittersweet because he still has the passion for it, but it makes him miss the days when his mom taught him to play. he wishes she could hear the songs he’s written.

maxie was a professional model from childhood to his mid-20′s. he hated it with a passion, only doing it because his parents made him and his twin was one as well, she made it more bearable. because of his modeling career he’s actually built up a lot of money from that alone.

his other money comes from coming from a wealthy family and his late husband’s own money that ended up being split with him in the divorce. he doesn’t flaunt it or want to talk about where any of his money comes from, it brings up too many terrible memories.

some of his motivation to expand land was caused by hurt from seeing how many nymphs were giving up and losing their homes. he thought, maybe, if there had been more land for nymphs to have as their own things could be better. it really aligned with him wanting to help pokemon for similar reasons too. for the most part he did have good intentions. he just didn’t think things through and was blinded by anger and his one track mind.

if not for archie he’s not sure where he’d be. archie found him twice at major points in his life and helped him both times more than he could ever say. he has no idea how to make it up to him or repay him, but he wants to. badly. he owes that man his life on multiple counts. his friendship is precious to him, even if he’s bad at expressing it.

I powered thru and still managed to understand most of the arc despite reading half this issue out of order (essentially) bc the website I read it on split the pages up and I couldn't tell they were supposed to be doubled (and also I'm dumb so I didn't figure it out)

AUGHHH and then we jump to rodimus ONCE AGAIN breaking his own rules and trying to save trailbreaker...IT HURTS MAN...god I love rodimus, I feel like him being broken up about crewmembers like trailbreaker dying is one part regular sadness over people he knows dying for tragic reasons, and one part personal guilt at someone under his command dying, even if he’s not involved/at fault. I love the dichotomy of this emotional reaction that comes only partially from empathy/emotion, but also comes from a kinda self-centered need for success as measured by people under your command staying alive. and taking into account rodimus’s life it totally makes sense that he’d act like that...GAH I love it. the complexity of it all!

oh man that last panel of trailbreaker holding up roller’s juice box...iirc the first time I read this I thought that was roller (cause of the juice box I guess? idk I'm an idiot) so I was like oh ok he must've come back or something. very much related but I didn't really think about tarn being a particular pre-established character and totally didn't read the whole ‘roller is tarn’ thing that was going on 

which in my defense ruth also didn't pick up on any of that while reading this and eventually like 2 issues before the reveal I had to prompt her like ‘you should maybe be wondering WHO tarn is’ vhbahjksdfbaksjdf

so! issue 37! this issue is a solid favorite of mine, id say definitely top 5 or even 3. I'm super biased bc I fucking LOVE time travel, it’s seriously one of my favorite tropes ever, and this issue hits all the time travel beats I love. characters traveling to the past and interacting with people they know! conversations that have multiple meanings bc of TIME TRAVEL! trying to save someone who meets a terrible fate in your future! fun time travel action! the time traveling characters being generally terrible at hiding the fact that they're time travelers! ITS SO GOOD. 

and I love the clever way everything is tied together here - where we get a nice continuation of shadowplay, with this taking place shortly after that with a lot of the same cast, and time travel classics like the good ole ‘if we hadn't travelled back in time and done what we did, the future we came from wouldn't have existed at all,’ in the flavor of ‘rodimus saving his baby self’ and ‘rodimus NOT saving trailbreaker’ and ‘everyone forgot about roller :(’ 

ok but like, did the lost lighters just go ‘oh well, guess rollers gone now.’ like they DID realize that the outlaw crew would have no idea what happened to him if they got their memories erased, right?? did the lost lighters figure that since roller never reappeared after this time period, that was how history was ‘supposed’ to go and they shouldn't mess with it? am I overthinking it? as usual: yes, probably. I love overthinking about comics, in case that wasn't obvious

basically...I love this issue soooo much. so so good and a bunch of fun tropes that I love. I mean the whole arc is like that for me since I love time travel so much. so I cant wait to (re)read more!!

-when bnha was first gaining traction on tumblr, it was all art of Tsuyu. I have no idea why. People were talking about the funky frog lesbian superhero anime. Maybe it was just the people I was following, maybe it was a general trend, but I LOVED her design!!! my fav color and frogs r super cute!!! And I already loved superhero media, so I was like. I’ll watch it. For Her. SO. FROPPY IS THE REASON I WATCHED/READ BNHA. I went in thinking she was the protag and I was sooo confused when Izuku was... tbh I still think it’d be more interesting if she was lmaooo aus where? ...seriously if anyone has good aus where this is the case send them LOL

-I don’t actually feel that bad abt what Shigaraki’s doing. I still feel bad for him. I’m this post. yes im an apologist. its not my fault hes sexy and has been running around shirtless. hes a lesbian icon like thor is. I want to touch his hair. hes never done anything wrong in his life. he could kill all might, deku, bakugo, whatever, I’d still be sayin this. I don’t feel bad for gt. like. was anyone genuinely attached to him? lmao

-well u know how spinner’s quirk is just sticking to things? We haven’t seen him use it in canon except like, (1) time iirc?? I think this is probably bc he’s embarrassed about it even in front of the league... I loooove the idea that he gets more comfortable with it around them :”) and also how shigaraki. um. does that falling asleep thing while standing up with his eyes open, canonly? (which I still love lmfao) Imagine someone in the league walking in a dark room, turning on the light n just seeing. Spinner upside down, stuck to the ceiling asleep bc heat rises and its Warmer Up There. (cold blooded thing like tsuyu?? come ON give him a big fuzzy coat and scarf...) and Shigaraki in the center of the room, slouched but still standing, eyes open and motionless. Theyre both sleeping. Whomever sees it just...slowly walks out. LMAO

-Toga roller derby au. No deep thoughts I just think she’d be good at it. 

-Toga 100% is a social butterfly and could befriend anyone if they didn’t just judge the fact she was trying to stab them smh :/ (ok but seriously anytime I see cute friendships with her n the other kids im like :) aw. I feel like her and Camie...would be good friends. Camie feels chill enough to be like ‘ok whatever thats totally fine I forgive you!!’ LMAO we love airheads here)

-HOW DID TOGA GET SO GOOD AT FIGHTING? We know she’s been on the run since middle school or so, but good enough to pin Deku down after he’s been formally trained at a ~hero school~ for a while? (she pinned him TWICE I think, once when his arms were messed up, but, the other time as Camie, so? AND THEN WAS ONE OF THE 100 PEOPLE TO GO THRU TO THE 2ND ROUND OF THAT? even tho she didn’t bc she had to leave) good enough to beat Aizawa in a fight and stab him? A professional hero and teacher for YEARS? Is that seriously just street training??? Can people acknowledge how amazing her combat skills and reflexes are??? More Toga appreciation when?? Also her backstory??? SO subversive and incredible, hate when people reduce her to just a ~typical anime yandere~ :/

-Tomura doing stuff with his hands/fingers to train his quirk!!! And to learn to be careful with it!! obv I’m a Big Fan of him playing piano to do this and video games are prob the canon answer, but like, guitar or any stringed instrument that requires Hands would work too. Or knitting/sewing? EMBROIDERING? ??? Please, let me give you the mental image of him knitting aggressively while mentally scheming, watching a twitch streamer or smth too while doing it. (Doing stuff with your hands is a great way to let your mind come up with creative stuff, that’s how I come up with writing/drawing ideas 70% of the time)

-Tomura actually PREFERS cutesty, relaxing games. I mean, he does fighting and bloody stuff irl, games are a way to relax...he’ll play shooters and gta type games with The Lads, but. on his own?? animal crossing. pokemon. kirby games. mario. zelda. BIG ZELDA FAN (not saying this bc I, personally, am biased, but,) slime rancher, stardew valley, funny simulator games... he really enjoys those :”) God forbid he has a kid bc they’re 100% getting named after a viddy game character unless someone can talk him out of it LOL. Toga and Tomura are that animal crossing /doom meme where she’d be asking for doom and him asking for animal crossing :”)

-Bits and pieces of Before are kinda stuck in Kurogiri’s brain, but like. mostly useless stuff the doctor didn’t care about removing. Like, types of clouds. So Tomura kinda picks up on stuff like that. He can just look at clouds and tell you what type they are because Kurogiri used to take him up to high places in the city and point them out to calm Tomura down from a panic attack when he was younger. He can tell you if the sky looks like it’ll rain with a 80% accuracy rate too. 

-Kurogiri left food out for kitties in the alley beside the bar. They weren’t allowed in for Health Reasons (it IS a bar with sanitation standards!!) And Tomura really wouldn’t stop it or encourage it either way so long as Kurogiri did his job, but occasionally would stand outside with Kurogiri and just watch the kitties from a distance. If any approached he’d go back in (lowkey afraid he’d hurt them by touching them :( ) They kinda kept that between them tho, bc they both Know AFO is a big bag of dicks and no fun

-people have pointed out how similar aizawa and tomura look. this was 100% the intention. tomura has a hatecrush on him. THIS IS SO FUNNY AND HORRIBLY AWKWARD FOR KUROGIRI LMAO

-Sako??? Mr. Dramatic?? Opera fan. Drama kid. Like, obviously, but. Really. He is. I feel like he can speak a dozen languages. I also feel like he used to be an overachiever but got too ambitious. He was def some kind of leader at one point of a diff Group or something that fell apart. I LOVE how creative he is with his quirk and the magician theme??? incredible. I don’t show him enough love but I Love Clowns :o)

-I don’t care what their canon heights are. Spinner and Dabi? short kings. My height hcs are (tallest to shortest) Kurogiri, Twice, Sako (who also has heels on his boots and a tall hat, keep in mind), Tomura, Magne (Tomura and Magne are about the same height imo) Toga, Spinner, Dabi. LISTEN. Dabi has short energy. Sorry. it’s true tho

-This is a semi-popular hc I think bc I KNOW I’ve seen it before, but Dabi having Terrible Vision and needing glasses is so so good. (seriously, with burns THAT close to his eyeballs, how could he not?) 

-he tries to be a tough loner coolguy. you’d think he’d smoke, but I hc his ‘weak constitution’ comes with weak lungs (esp from years of a flame quirk?? inhaling smoke over so much time is SO bad for you, most people who die in fires actually die of smoke inhalation...) so he’s got like, an inhaler, can’t smoke, actually gets carsick, needs glasses, overuses quirk to save friends constantly, likes napping, a little awkward and rude. Tomura put him in charge of the vanguard so he’s smart, and good with strategies too, like a nerd. this is the Dabi I wanna see, not the popular fandom version of him tbh also step on hawks one more time sir :”)

-I wish all the lov fics weren’t?? villain!deku like I said earlier, but also, chatfics? I have nothing against them but most of them are just a bombardment of Memes with NO PLOT!!! Listen. text/chatfics CAN have plot and be an interesting way to tell a story. I almost want to write one just to show what I mean...

I know I’ve said I like spinaraki and blackmagic, but I am a multishipper, so a few ships I don’t talk about that I like that involve the lov in some way:

-toga/any of the 1A girls??? or Camie??? super interesting. ALSO in the radio drama, bakugo’s voice actor said Toga was his favorite girl??? so?? bakugo/toga ?? I WANT TO SEE IT. but specifically my fav dynamic with her is when someone ELSE is the one to like her first, it’s what she deserves.

you definitely commented on his height and he definitely commented on yours

his visits were scarce at first, but then it seemed, after a few months, he was always hanging over your chair, peering over your shoulder, and asking you what your take was on whatever you chose to examine

you’d just shrug and ignore the proximity of the other

to say you were dense to Raihan’s advancements was an understatement

but he was totally, and unexplainably, in love with you

at first glance he wasn’t quite struck--he definitely did find you pretty, don’t get him wrong--but once he got to know you, to know your mind, that was when he could no longer keep himself away

he loves the way you ramble, loves the way you lose yourself in thought, voicing your theories as you rummage through different books

he finds your mumbling cute

Saiouma Week Day Three: AU

Title: A Battle Between Lovers, a Panic Over Partners

Summary: Kokichi and Shuichi have a Pokemon battle, because why not. Surely everything will go fine! ... Right?

Words: 1689

Note: Even though I know the days can be done late, I wanted to finish this one today because otherwise I would have just never finished it. Because of that, and my lack of inspiration when it came to this prompt, it's not really edited, especially near the end, so I think I kinda butchered Shuichi's sorta anxiety attack. Sorry about that. I hope you enjoy anyway.

Shuichi wasn't sure what led to this battle. He wasn't very strong, and his Pokemon weren't the most experienced. But somehow, he'd ended up in a Pokemon battle with Kokichi Ouma, the Ultimate Shiny Hunter, with the threat of having to do any dare Kokichi came up with if he lost.

Of course, Shuichi knew that the same could be said for the other boy; if, by some miracle, Kokichi lost, he could dare Kokichi to do whatever he wanted – give up lying for a day, help Shuichi with his missing Pokemon cases, etcetera. But that probably wasn't going to happen, so as he stepped into place on the school's outside battlefield, Shuichi sighed, prepared himself, and pulled out a PokeBall.

"You ready?! You ready?!" Kokichi called from the other side of the field, already bouncing in excitement. Evanescence, Shuichi's emotional support Pokemon and one of his Mightyena, glanced up at him, and after bending down to Evanescence a quick pet, Shuichi straightened up and gave a nod that could be seen clearly by the other boy.

"Woohoo! Now, remember, Shuichi, only two Pokemon!" Kokichi shook his head as if he was prepared for Shuichi to cheat, but Shuichi just rolled his eyes and gripped his PokeBall tighter. They agreed upon that rule because of <i>Shuichi's</i> limitations in Pokemon, so it was pretty much impossible for him to cheat. Regardless...

"Prepare to lose, Shuichi! Three... two... one... Let's duel!"

The final part of that yell threw Shuichi off a bit, but after a minor stumble, Shuichi threw out his PokeBall to reveal Zen, his Kirlia. Zen hit the ground poised, dancing on the tips of its feet, while Kokichi's Lumineon swam through the air, following Zen as Zen leaped around.

<i>That's the Lumineon Kokichi got from Kaito,</i> Shuichi thought, eyes locked onto the water type Pokemon. <i>I wonder what kind of moves it has...?</i>

Well, no time left to think, because a second later Kokichi was pointing and shouting, "Water Pulse!"

Lumineon shot out a circle of water, and as Shuichi cried out, Zen moved to dodge. Zen didn't quite get out of the way, but they didn't get hit with the full force of the water, either, and stumbled back a bit, soaking wet. Shuichi took in a shaky breathe as he lowered his hands from where they had instinctively gone to clutch his shirt.

Right, okay, it was his turn. He could do this. "Zen, uh, use... Magical Leaf!"

Even through the barrage of leaves Zen shot at Lumineon, Shuichi could see Kokichi curse. Magical Leaf might be the only attack move Zen knew, but it was super-effective and never missed.

The move hit Lumineon dead on, and it cried out in pain. Kokichi's face twisted, and after a moment of hesitation where Lumineon was shaking its head and Shuichi and Zen were watching carefully, Kokichi brought out his PokeBall to recall Lumineon. "Lumineon, return!"

Lumineon disappeared in a red beam of light, and Zen shot an anxious glance at Shuichi. Shuichi did his best to smile and reassure his Pokemon, but evidently his own nervousness was showing, as Evanescence headbutted him to ground him in the present.

<i>Okay. Okay, I can do this. Bringing back Lumineon was a smart move, but what's Kokichi going to do now...?</i>

Kokichi, smirking by this time, threw out a fresh PokeBall, and evidently, the answer to that question was "send out a shiny Froslass."

"Laaass!" Froslass shook itself off, bursting out of its PokeBall in a glimmer of light and mist, and Shuichi had the random, illogical thought, <i>Ah, so this is how I die.</i>

A moment later, though, he was shaking that thought off, and ordering Zen to use Double Team with a hesitant shout.

"Lia!" Zen started bouncing around, leaping like a ballerina and making copies of itself whenever it landed. Kokichi's eyes followed Zen, but Shuichi doubted he knew which one was the real Zen by now – he sure as heck didn't.

And it seemed like Froslass didn't either, based on its frantic spinning in circles to try and keep an eye on all the Kirlia. Shuichi relaxed his breath.

<i>Maybe I can actually –</i>

"Use Blizzard! And follow it up with Hail!"

<i>... You've got to be kidding me...</i>

Froslass cheered as it raised its hands to the sky, summoning clouds and mist that covered the entire battlefield. "Fros, lass lass!"

The hail began to fall, and Shuichi sneezed as the temperature changed. His sneeze was nothing compared to the barrage Zen's clones were taking, though, as they disappeared one by one as hailstones struck them. Soon enough, Zen was the only Kirlia left in the arena, sheltering its head from the storm above. "Kirlia!"

"Ah! Zen!" Shuichi squinted to see through the mist; he could make out Zen, and Froslass, but from here, Kokichi was just a shape in the fog. Shuichi gritted his teeth. "Use Magical Leaf!"

"Kirl!" Kirlia sent out the attack, but Shuichi knew it wasn't very effective. There was a shout that Shuichi couldn't quite make out, and with a gust of wind and another round of hail, Zen fell to the ground.

Heart sinking, Shuichi dug in his bag for Zen's PokeBall. Holding it out with an arm as shaky as his voice, he called, "Zen, return!"

Zen disappeared in a flash of light just like how Lumineon had, and Shuichi took a moment to smile at the Pokemon currently inside the PokeBall before putting it away.

Kokichi shouted something else, probably a taunt that didn't make its way past the storm, but Shuichi just ignored it. <i>Okay, so I know I don't have any Pokemon that are as high a level as his Froslass... But I guess Crossbones would be the way to go? Certainly not Meatball, at the very least...</i> Shuichi reached for Crossbones's PokeBall... And hesitated.

<i>Wait, Froslass is a ghost type... And Lumineon is a water type... So based on the moves of my Pokemon, who I should really go for is –</i>

"HEY SHUICHI, YOU'RE NOT BAILING ON ME, ARE YOU, YOU MEANIE?!"

"Let's go, Boomer!"

"Emol, emolga!"

Emolga shot out into the storm, easily coasting on the winds of Froslass's Blizzard. Shuichi grinned across the field, and as he took a deep breath of the icy cold air, he knew by the way his heart soared he made a good choice.

Maybe this wouldn't be a guaranteed loss on his part after all.

"BOOMER, USE U-TURN!" Shuichi yelled out into the arena, loud enough so Kokichi could hear him – just like how Kokichi yelled out at Shuichi just a moment ago. Evanescence stood up next to Shuichi, and Shuichi knew if he hadn't been on-duty, he probably would have howled.

"Mol!" Boomer cut through the clouds, striking Froslass before the other Pokemon could react. Normally, this would be the part where Boomer returned to its PokeBall, but Shuichi didn't have anyone to switch out to.

The hail fell again, and although Shuichi winced as he heard Boomer's cry meaning it got hit, he didn't back down.

Beside him, Evanescence pressed its side to Shuichi's leg. Shuichi balled his hands into fists as he waited for Kokichi's next move.

"...ard!"

"Froslass!"

Froslass raised its arms again, and in a blast of wind, Boomer was sent flying. "Emol!"

"Boomer!" Just like that, Shuichi's determined mood vanished in the wind. He peered through the storm, trying to see what was happening, but wherever Boomer ended up, Shuichi couldn't see him.

Kokichi, though, apparently could, and after nodding away from Shuichi, Froslass dispelled the blizzard with a final arm wave, and Shuichi got to see the sight of Kokichi making his way over to him with a blank expression, fainted Boomer in his arms.

"Ah! Boomer!" Shuichi dashed out to Kokichi, Evanescence bounding beside him. Shuichi didn't know what to say, or think, but his mind was already yelling at him what ifs about Boomer being seriously hurt, and as Shuichi reached Kokichi he couldn't even do anything more than stare at Boomer.

<i>What if Boomer's injured what if Boomer doesn't get better what if Boomer hates you now what if –</i>

...

Evanescence tugged on his pant leg, and Shuichi realized he was hyperventilating.

Forcing himself to calm down and breathe, Shuichi blinked as he continued to stare at Boomer... Who Kokichi was currently administering a Potion to. Looking at him now, Shuichi could see he was fine, but Shuichi didn't dare ask to hold him, instead slowly sitting down so he could hug Evanescence.

A moment later, Kokichi joined him. Between the warmth of Evanescence and the tears starting to slip from his eyes, Shuichi realized this was the longest he'd ever heard Kokichi be quiet.

"Emol?"

Shuichi choked up, and as he turned to his side, Boomer jumped over to his shoulder and patted his cheek sympathetically. Behind Boomer, Kokichi was smiling softly, looking away like he wasn't sure how to help.

Shuichi reached out a hand to Kokichi, but froze before making contact. Kokichi blinked, but Shuichi didn't know whether he'd noticed or not.

Boomer climbed up his head and rested on his hat. Shuichi wasn't complaining.

"You knoow," Kokichi began, as he waved at Froslass, which Shuichi only just now realized he hadn't actually returned to its PokeBall, "maybe I'll save the dare for another time, so you can help me prank Kiibo. If he was here, then we could do it today, but alas," Kokichi sighed.

Shuichi knew that was as direct to an "are you okay?" as he was going to get from Kokichi, but he was okay with that. In fact... It was kinda nice.

So Shuichi smiled, turned, and buried his face into Mightyena fur.

Because maybe this battle didn't go that well, but at the end of the day, Shuichi knew he had both people and Pokemon who loved him.

Oh, i was like, in elementary school, and it was back when pokemon was new. XD i just did the whole "imagine my own adventure", sometimes based off how an episode could have gone if i was in it. I just remembered that Rattata was my "first"/starter because.... I think it was thw first pokemon i ran into in yellow?? Or something weird like that.

It wasn't anything major or whatever, just the "daydream" story you tell yourself to go to bed.

Except, being the adhd child i was and not given any sleeping aids, took what felt like 4 hours. [It sometimes was, other times it was 2-3. This is all normal for adhd brains and it is one of several big reasons i would rather die than give up my trileptal, which helps me fall asleep within like, an hour]. So i'd just be doing that, for hours, trying to entertain/wear myself out to sleep, because obviously no one else was. [I also do not recall ever needing naps in elementary school, or taking them except maaaaybe during kindergarten?? Was that a thing in the mid 90s? I don't know anymore]

But yeah no it just reminded me that one of my pokemon "adventure" dreams involved me choosing/having a rattata as a starter bc we only had kanto and the 151 back then. Because i was bored and was trying different story starts to see what would click. [My actual starter, based off first pokemon merch, would have been a Poliwhirl (or Poliwag if it must be unevolved) ]
